  1. I ordered my EVE Spectrum QHD 144Hz back in March 2021 and still haven't received it, nor have I received any new delivery timelines since early this year, where it was supposed to be delivered back in April 2022. Order cancellations are starting to build up, with refund requests taking upwards of 90 days for many folks, and tons of games being played by support staff mishandling the refund process. Their community managers aren't able to provide any timelines for producing and delivering orders, despite the tech shortages easing up significantly this year, evidenced by a surge in availability of many different products that were previously scarce. I really wanted this company to succeed, and it appears their monitors are being well received (1, 2), but their management and production/delivery is a hot mess right now. Rtings.com discovered that EVE / DOUGH employees were creating new accounts to manipulate vote counts in their product suggestion poll so it would get reviewed sooner, and are considering a total ban of the brand on their site if more abuse is discovered. Last, starting at $650-799 (without a stand), their pricing is outrageous compared to what the competition has to offer today. In 2020 / 2021 when they opened orders up, they had the advantage with USB-C display + 100W charging, a built-in KVM, etc.; but now, displays like the Gigabyte M27Q / M32Q offer comparable specs like USB-C w/ charging (albeit lower wattage), KVM, and high refresh rates, plus they don't charge extra for a basic stand. I realize the Spectrum line-up does offer several superior features, but at quite a premium. It all depends on what you're looking for, and in 2022, they're even less differentiated as competitors catch up. Is anyone else in the same boat? I'm so disappointed.
  2. For those wanting a high performance workstation computer, for a long time now there's been no choice but get a computer with an x86 processor from Intel and consequently, they've had to run devices they cannot fully audit and modify as Intel refuses to open parts for their firmware. Feasible alternatives would be IBM's POWER and Oracle's SPARC ( as a few posters ITT pointed out) and if you've been following news outlets covering open source software, you'll likely have read about Raptor Engineering and their development of a workstation that utilizes POWER8 processors and sports a fully free and open firmware with no proprietary binary blobs. The impressive fruits of that labor in the form of an ATX motherboard or a full system based on it are now available to be crowdfunded for equally impressive sums. A wishy washy conceptual illustration of how various architectures stack up according to Raptor Engineering Specification highlights are: 1 socket for CPUs with up to 12 physical cores with 8-way multithreading each for a total of 96 threads. 8 DDR3 ECC DIMM slots for a maximum of 256GB of RAM 6 PCIe slots ( 2 16x and 4 8x) 2 Gigabit NICs 10 6Gb/s SATA ports ( 8 internal, 2 eSATA) 8 USB 3.0 ports ( 4 external 4 internal) As well as serial ports, on-board FPGAs and a GPIO header All this power (tee hee) will cost you $4 100 ( plus $250 for shipping if you're not from USA) for just the motherboard and a compatible heatsink or $18 000 (plus $500 shipping for those outside the US) for the full system, which comes configured with a 12 core CPU, the full 256GB of ECC RAM, 2 4TB SAS hard drives attached to a PCI RAID controller presumably and an AMD FirePro or nVidia Tesla GPU. The crowdfunding campaign is attempting to raise $3 700 000 over the next 60 days. Personally, I still haven't decided which I value more - freedom or having 2 kidneys. Update: The campaign has since added a $7500 option to get the workstation with mere 128 GB of RAM, less expensive storage, an RX480 in place of the workstation GPU and with the CPU sold separately ( so around $8600 for an 8 core system or $10 500 for a 12 core configuration, again plus $500 for the shipping outside the US). Update 2: Raptor Engineering have dropped the worldwide shipping charges and lowered the prices by $400, as well as introduced a middle of the road storage oriented build, but with 30 days left to go and less than 10% of the necessary funds raised, it's unlikely to turn the campaign into a success. Phoronix article Crowdfunding page with detailed info and benchmarks
  3. Purism started a crowdfunding campaign for their new security and privacy focused phone, the Librem 5. It will be completely open source, and use federated, encrypted communications by default. Parts of the engadget article on the topic: I think this is pretty interesting, since there hasn't been much around phones that run pure open source software since the Nokia N900 almost ten years ago. Take a look at their campaign for more info: https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/
  4. Source : https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/6/26/15876934/bluespin-bluetooth-fidget-spinner-app-indiegogo Even if I understand that hand spinners can be fun, i don't think that making IoT handspinner is really relevant
  5. Mods: Posting this here in case it could be a Tech News topic. Cloud Imperium games recently sent a Letter from the Chairman (Chris Roberts) email to its backers confirming the news that they had reached the $200 million (USD) crowdfunding threshold and broken through. In the email they both announced upcoming features and reiterated their commitment to their die-hard fans. https://www.dualshockers.com/star-citizen-budget/ Official site: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals This goal was broken preceding the announced free play week. This week in fact (week of the 18th). Some snippets from the email: ------------------------ "The amount is the highest total for any project in the history of crowdfunding and is beyond anything I could have imagined in my wildest dreams. While the number is impressive, that is not what sets Star Citizen and Squadron 42 apart. The true celebration is one of how a community came together to enable a shared dream to come to life. How gamers from all over the world came together to finance one of the biggest and most ambitious projects ever embarked on. There is no publisher. No big conglomerate. This is all grassroots, funded by gamers for gamers." ------- "We give you multiple updates every week and have been since the inception of the project. This year we rolled out a live roadmap for Star Citizen’s development that is linked to our internal task and scheduling system and shows the planned features and content for the next four upcoming releases of Star Citizen Alpha. This December, we will also add the roadmap for Squadron 42’s completion." ------------- "This milestone is coming at a very exciting time for the project having just released Star Citizen Alpha 3.3 with Object Container Streaming (OCS) and Client Bind Culling, which makes a huge difference in client performance and memory usage. Face over IP (FOIP) is in the community’s hands and is proving to be a game changer. No other game has the ability to drive your avatar’s face and look via a webcam, as well as to place your voice diegetically inside the game. The possibilities for social interactions inside the world of Star Citizen now mirror what you can do in the real world. Lastly, with ship purchasing live in 3.3, we have a full game loop with basic progression, where you have a reason to haul cargo, take missions or mine. This week marks the start of our 2948 Anniversary Event, which celebrates the end of the original crowdfunding campaign back in November 2012. This year we are particularly excited by our Free Fly event where we are opening the opportunity to try out the 80 flyable ships and vehicles in game. Star Citizen Alpha 3.3.5, which brings a lot more content, including the planet of Hurston, it’s moons and the major landing zone Lorville, is currently in PTU and should be Live in the next few days." ---------------------------------------- :: End email snippets Of course, the constant scope creep and reworks due to engine changes and new features being implemented have pushed everything past expected completion dates, but the constant stream of updates and announcements at least keeps me hopeful, personally. It's looking pretty good so far with what we can play with in the various alpha builds. It will be interesting to see how much longer development will take until Cloud Imperium Games considers Star Citizen to embody their stated goals of a persistent living universe, and how long it takes for an official full release announcement. Also...how much larger could that crowdfunding number continue to grow?
  6. I can understand why Paypal did this, crowdfunds are a risky investment and since you aren't promised a product, Paypal shouldn't try to refund it in the first place. It would be a waste of resources and would be inconvenient to the customers who were actually scammed and want to get a refund. As the article stated: "This is an inherent – but often overlooked – part of crowdfunding: you invest money in a project, not a product. So if the project fails, you can easily lose your money.". I couldn't agree more. That's why I don't invest big sums of money into Kickstarter, I would rather have a 100% guarantee that I get the product by buying it when its released. Source: http://www.androidauthority.com/paypal-payment-protection-crowdfunding-691452/ Do you invest in crowdfunding, and do you think that Paypal's decision is reasonable?
  7. Tom Fulp of Newgrounds.com is asking it's users for monetary support to help fill the paygaps where ad-revenue falls short and launched a Supporter Upgrade page that would allow users to choose from a monthly subscription or an annual fee, as well as featuring an option for one-time donations. Supporters do, indeed, receive upgrades within the site, such as the ability to view the site without ads, the ability to change their username, have an animated forum signature, a nod of appreciation on the "Wall of Honor", and have early access to exclusive content. Tom gives all the details in this forum post here: http://www.newground...s/topic/1402392 ...as well as some additional information in this recent post. http://www.newground...s/topic/1403487 Tom currently asks for 1000 monthly supporters subscribed as the first major goal, but hopes to one day reach 10k supporters to help fund more creative contests within the site and sponsor artists who make quality, premium content, not to mention hire more staff. The minimum funding goal is also stated in the Supporter Upgrade page.
  8. Hey guys, Some of you may remember the earlier post about the Defcon One M-ATX case we were crowdfunding for (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/380775-a-revolution-in-mid-tower-cases-the-defcon-one/) - well, the crowdfunding went well and we've working on the case prototypes - this second prototype we built a test system in and took some pictures. As you can see the system looks fairly clean, and we'll ass more wire management holes too. Also, we've kept the case as "dis-assemble-able" as possible, only leaving two parts riveter together and every other part removable. Only thing missing are the side panels - laser messed them up and we're waiting for replacement. The 2 USb 3.0 ports stay hidden to sight yet very accessible in the front. We'll be correcting the mistakes we found and will make some changes too, such as adding an option for 240 radiator on the top, moving the PSU and 120 rad to the bottom (not as efficient thermally, but easier to assemble)and a few other goodies which we'll uncover in time. Feel free to leave your feedback
  9. Hey guys, Here is another project we're working on over at Hydra: Flat Reservoirs As with all the other project we have developed and have received from other people to develop (our intention is to allow people to send us ideas, suggestions etc, help them develop the project and then let them earn from the idea they had), we'll be doing a crowdfunding sometimes near the end of November to start manufacturing them. These reservoirs allow for vast customization, as you can simply place a cut-out panel on top of them and have a custom made liquid routing of any shape you chose. We're planning on manufacturing these in a variety of sizes and shapes; for now these are the ones we'll be doing for placement in cases and desk solutions. They all have 4mm internal height and have been designed to work with pumps up to 24V 400x60mm 250x60mm 150x60mm We'll also have 3 models to be lodged in drive bays: 3 bay height 4 bay height 5 bay height I'll be updating the post as our testers (people from italian groups/forums, we are italian based) will send us pics. For now here are some shots we took of the longer model and others all under works.
  10. Hey guys! I wanted to bring your attention to this project, currently crowdfunding to make the prototypes; The final revision of it has been discussed on Toms Hardware, with pretty positive impressions from the editors! http://www.tomshw.it/news/defcon-one-il-case-per-pc-italiano-e-cambiato-e-sta-per-arrivare-in-commercio-65959 "...A compact system, that is still capable of housing 2 GPUs and four hard drives. An unusual chassis designed to have the highest cooling performance [...] GPUs are generally the hottest component in a case, and by being the same compartment as the other parts, they contribute to raising the temperature, [here] the GPUs are still inside of the case, but have their own airflow [and draw air exclusively from the outside]...." As well as an article about our crowdfunding campaign for the prototypes on Indiegogo! "...Our best whishes [..] for the crowdfundign campaing and we'll follow the further developments! " http://www.tomshw.it/news/case-italiano-defcon-one-si-cercano-fondi-per-realizzare-i-prototipi-66991 Here are some renders of what it will look like and if you want to contribute to the campaign, here is the link http://igg.me/at/defcon-one
  11. So this happened over the past weekend (http://tinyurl.com/lmorzoz) tl:dr Vietnamese tourist with meager pay gets scammed for an iPhone 6 in Singapore So what happened next was remarkable. A Singapoream, Gabriel Kang set up a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo crowdfund this guy an iPhone. With the help of countless Singaporeans of this post USD$4000 has been raised to help this guy. This is quite heartwarming see that there has been such a move outside of the normal campaigns we usually see crowdfunding campaigns are for like Oculus.
  12. Reach out to those in pain.. The Crowd-funding site Indiegogo has launched a new site separate from their original campaign site dedicated just for humanitarian cause that people can use to help those who are in need.. Basically it's a charity fund that is used to help those who are in need , The service is called Indiegogo Life. together.. Since this being a charitable target , the site creators aren't charging extra for the cause funding , While successfully funded campaigns on Indiegogo are charged a fee of 4 percent if they use PayPal or 9 percent if they don’t, Indiegogo Life won’t charge any platform fees. Recently our beloved Tech of tommorow Host Elric Phares was in the campaign where he's being treated for diabetes & got his second leg amputated & his friends have been active in it to bring him some help via the crowd funding.. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/support-elric-phares the money you collect is typically what you'll keep. The categories available on Indiegogo life are medical needs, emergencies, celebrations, memorials, pets & animals, faith, sports, volunteer efforts and education. Indiegogo says the new service also features a new campaign setup process that’s faster than before and access to community building tools. cue sarah mclachlan With that being said, Indiegogo currently do not verify the campaigns <_< put up on the site, Which means that there is quite a large possibility of scamming cases , So think before you actually make a decision to give support, but do do that with caution as well..The site has also launched an app for the crowd-funding campaign. 13. What is this? As you may or may not have heard, we are moving to a new office very very soon! This is extremely exciting for all of us, as it means that we will have the space to put together amazing sets for our current shows as well as any shows that may come in the future. It also gives us the space to pick up some new team members here at LMG, something that we are pretty much out of in our current office... Over the next month and a bit, we will be running a crowdfunding campaign through the forum to help supplement our moving expenses and renovation costs. There will be some very cool contributor rewards and quite a few awesome stretch goals (more info on those soon :D). Now, many moons ago when the forum was but a wee discussion board, we promised that we would never add a top banner ad to our site. We know that many of you guys appreciate that, and we never plan to accept payment for a top banner spot on our forum. However, with your approval, we would love to be able to advertise our own crowdfunding campaign in the top banner spot. Obviously our dedicated community members will find out about the campaign either way, but casual visitors might not see it unless it is prominently displayed in a spot like the top banner. So please answer the poll and leave your thoughts down below. Can we add a top banner for our own campaign? Would we be going against our word to do so even though it's for our own campaign with no third party involved? Rest assured, we won't be adding a top banner ad for our crowdfunding campaign unless there is an immensely positive response to this poll. Thanks everyone! -Nick
  14. Now you can buy weird stuff too  Look into my eyes... i own your soul now.. Redditmade , The huge online community message board site unveiled it's Crowd funding site on Wednesday, Basically it's initiative is that to allows Reddit users to raise money to manufacture and sell customized items. as a way you've seen in kickstarter users are not required to put in any money upfront, if they reach the goal within 30 days from the time the project was put online & reach that goal, they'll be allowed to have the funding Screenshot! pew.. pew.. The move will add another revenue stream to Reddit, which has tried to find creative ways to make money from the millions of people who visit the site without angering its quirky community of Internet denizens. While users who create successful Redditmade campaigns can keep any money they have raised for themselves, Reddit also encourages users to donate the funds raised to charities, causes or individuals that the users find most important. But unlike Kickstarter, Redditmade focuses more on physical goods, like T-shirts, shot glasses and stickers. Users are asked to create a custom item and have 30 days to raise the necessary amount of funds or orders to manufacture and send out the item In addition to keeping all the donations, campaign owners also have the option to either sell at cost and thereby generate no profits or to donate any profits to a charity, event or individual. Reddit has grown enormously in popularity over the last five years & Although Reddit have been a shady site for over a few years as we know, with close to 170 million regular users to accomplish specific goals, Official subreddit campaigns will be highlighted as featured campaigns on Redditmade, and may also qualify for free ads on Reddit itself. Mods will also have the power to officially endorse other subreddit campaigns. In the past, popular Reddit sub communities have been able to coordinate action — for good or ill — across the web. When the annual Boston Marathon was attacked by bombers in April last year, Reddit embarked on a manhunt to identify the suspects. Users accidentally blamed the wrong person. They have achieved some good cause goals, Collectively in the past Redditors have raised money for cancer survivors, animal shelters and clean drinking water for developing countries in the past, all by rallying around causes brought to their attention on the site. Reddit also plans to donate a percentage of its revenue to charity, Bonus: So what do you guys think? Post your comments & Rants down belooooooooooooowwww...
