Hi Gang, I live on the tourist Island of Malta, 90 miles south of Italy between Sicily and the coast of Africa. We are self isolating, (age 70 & 74) and my clients are all idle as I distribute UK, Candadian and USA music video and Karaoke to the tourist hot spots which are all closed as are all Bars in our tiny overpopulated Island. We have 100 cases and a popualtion of a half million living in high density housing on a island just 19 miles by 16! So what better way to help that put my new build i9 9900KS/RTX 2080 Ti to good use by joining the LTT team at folding@home and put my water cooled overclocking power to use during this enforced shutdown of International Music Services music video and other promotional editing power. I have contacted the BBC and told them about the great efforts you are all doing to help out and asked them to contact the LTT group for more info and HQ HD video content. Stay safe and put your PC and your brains to work and fold protients for science here: https://foldingathome.org/ JOIN TEAM LTT by enterning team number 223518 Go man go.

I thought that I would take the time and notify users of potential Newegg.ca price gouging. To give you all a little back ground story, I have been wanting to spec out a workstation computer for myself. I have been gathering prices for parts and budgeting. In this last week I noticed that Newegg.ca prices have now drastically increased. Unless I have previously viewed a product on their website before, all prices have increased. I am now getting an increased price of $672 with 'Free Shipping' on the search page/title page. Once I click on the product I see the price that I have always viewed of $299, with $19.99 shipping. I found another supplier who is selling the case for $279 with $20 shipping at checkout. This other supplier has not changed any prices. At the end of the day it appears that Newegg.ca has increased all the prices on products during this pandemic. All prices from what I can see have increased and are drastically higher then competitors. If you were to be a regular Newegg.ca shopper and didn't know their prices were drastically higher then the market value. You would be paying a premium on Newegg.ca products. I hate being ripped off and don't appreciate companies price gouging. Link to the Newegg.ca product, you can confirm yourself if the price is $672 or close to it. https://www.newegg.ca/black-fractal-design-define-7-xl-atx-full-tower/p/N82E16811352118 NZXT H200 Desktop Computer Case with drastically different prices, same case huge price discrepancy! $544, https://www.newegg.ca/p/13K-000F-00053 $180, https://www.amazon.ca/NZXT-Desktop-Computer-CA-H200B-BR-Black/dp/B07CC5KHPG?th=1 Just though I would let consumers know about this potential issue.

Thought it would be a good idea to share with all of the WU shortages for Folding@Home right now that Rosetta@Home, run by the University of Washington, is also doing COVID-19 research. So if your rig is sitting waiting for Folding@Home WU's but not getting any you could also run Rosetta@Home. I'd say I have a pretty decent rig, the one people might say "it's just about all you need" with Ryzen 5 2600X and GTX 1070 Founder's Edition. With the current COVID-19 situation, I started folding@home to lend my computer power, but as you may have noticed, I have a Founder's Edition graphics card. I do really like the look of it, but it doesn't do as well in the cooling department with the single blower style fan. While folding, the temperature hangs out around 80 degrees, but has gone up as high as 83. Which reminded me of the very first LTT video I ever saw (and what got me into this mess): That video was a cringe to watch even when I didn't know anything about computer hardware and what a Titan was. However, that got me thinking. I'm not trying to make my card into a single slot card. Could I just take the cooling component of this video? This is my original rig without any "modifications" that was about to happen. I have 2 additional Riing 14 fans in the front of the case (not shown), 1 in the back, and 2 corsair ML 120 fans up at the top pushing air out. As you may have noticed also, I have 2600X with double fan setup of Noctua NH-U12S (in their best fan color) which is more than enough even under load. Especially since my GPU doesn't pump out hot air into the case, the fans at the top is practically being useless, so I decided to put them to use. For those with allergic reaction to jank, please hit the back button on your browser. This entire "procedure" took about an hour to complete and to "perfect," including the intake fan being held up by a spare SSD. The big question now is, was it worth it? I think so. It doesn't make it run any faster (since I didn't do anything to it to boost clock speed or anything) but it does run 6-7 degrees cooler. There is almost no air leaking so it is definitely pumping cool air into it, and the back fan pumps out warm air nicely. It won't be a permanent solution (or it might be if I get lazy to take it down) but it definitely works and I'll have it up for at least awhile to help my poor GPU even a little bit while it works to make the world a better place. Finally, going back to the title of the post... If LTT has taught me one thing... Thank you for reading this journey. Not sure if this belongs here or if it should be on the FAH page, but it is still related to air cooling so I guess it's fine here

On February 27th Folding at home announced it would take up the fight against COVID-19. https://foldingathome.org/2020/02/27/foldinghome-takes-up-the-fight-against-covid-19-2019-ncov/ Folding at home is using the work they did on the SARS virus as a basis to quickly ramp up work for the new COVID-19. The speed in which they have rolled out a number of Work Units has been incredible. On the 10th of march F@H announced that the first batch of WUs were now available to everyone who was running the client. https://foldingathome.org/2020/03/10/covid19-update/ It is actually really impressive that a volunteer network of computers can trade blows with the most powerful supercomputers on the planet. Being able to have rapid access to computing resources this vast quickly will massively help medical researchers around the world devise methods of treating COVID-19. It will also help that when the next corona virus spings up we will have computer models that may well be applicable to the new potential new virus of the future. Folding@home is a network of volunteer computers distributed around the world that aims to perform biomedical research with the single intent of helping to further understand and develop cures for a range of diseases such as; Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. The exact research that is done is simulating the 'folding' of proteins in the body, this is important because the function of a protein id directly related to its physical shape. And this, when the protein is created in the body it needs to reshuffle its shape to get into the correct structure to perform its task. Many illnesses can be linked to faulty proteins in the body such as many cancers and neurological issues, along with a wide number of other general health concerns. Folding@home is one of, if not THE world's fastest computing systems. Before the explosion of users the network had a reported speed of approximately 98.7petaFLOPS At this speed this network if compared with the TOP500 list of supercomputers would fall into 2nd. But that isn't all, tech outlets, manufactures and YouTubers have all spread the work regarding the effort! A variety of tech news outlets have reported on the project including kit guru. Most of these outlets have been advertising a team, either their own or one they are affiliated with. Various Tweets from third parties: Folding@Home has reported gained 400k new folders in the last couple weeks which means a 10x increase in the number of active volunteer systems. It really is all quite impressive to say the least, even being conservative F@H is now most probably the single most powerful computing system ever created! The first results are already starting to be produced! But it hasn't all been smooth sailing! Folding at Home has been experiencing massive server issues due to the large volume of new signups. At first it was simply the fact that they could not generate WUs quick enough to meet demand! Then they started to have issues with server being able to fulfil all the request for WUs! I cant seem to find the Tweets for this but let me tell you even now we are struggling to get work units consistently! So what can you do to help? Well by joining us over on the event thread and firing up your system! Lets beat this thing, hell there's even a few prizes to be won! I have been passionate about folding at Home for quite some time and if we can all band together to make for a better tomorrow I say we should, by distributing the costs of running the computation we can research things that otherwise would never have been able to be investigated. This is because some of the work that runs on the Folding network is too far 'out there' to be funded by any normal research grant which means they'd never be able to afford time on a real supercomputer. We truly are helping all of humanity wit this work. All of the data they generate is made freely available through research papers, of which F@H had produced over 200 by this point. If you are interested you can find them here! https://foldingathome.org/category/papers/

Edit 1 (3/6 7PM): Added information on coronavirus within Samsung factory workers Edit 2 (3/9 7PM) Added information on quarantine issues in Vietnam with Samsung Display workers, reformatted post Edit 3 (3/15 7PM) Added information on SK Hynix confirmed case This is going to be a bit long, so TLDR: 6+ workers have been confirmed to have COVID-19 at Samsung's Gumi factory, and confirmed cases have popped up in other Korean tech corporations too, including SK Hynix and LG Display. English article (Yonhap News Agency) http://yna.kr/AEN20200306008851320 A short article explaining most of the situation: (Local sources) http://www.hani.co.kr/arti/economy/marketing/930485.html [The Hankyoreh | 한겨레] https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20200301072900003?input=1195m [Yonhap News Agency | 연합뉴스] https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20200229030100003?input=1195m [Yonhap News Agency | 연합뉴스] https://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=101&oid=022&aid=0003443147 [Segye Ilbo | 세계일보 via Naver News] http://www.newsis.com/view/?id=NISX20200224_0000930184&cID=13001&pID=13000 [Newsis | 뉴시스] https://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=shm&sid1=101&oid=138&aid=0002083575 [Digital Times | 디지털타임즈] https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200313005700320?section=economy/industy [Yonhap News Agency | 연합뉴스] (English Article) https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20200315039800003?section=industry/all [Yonhap News Agency | 연합뉴스] 1) An employee of Samsung Electronics (wireless device dept) who works at Samsung Electronic's 2nd factory in Gumi, South Korea (구미 2사업장) was diagnosed with the new coronavirus. The Gumi 2nd factory is used by Samsung's wireless device department, in charge of development of wireless devices such as mobile phones. Gumi's 2nd facory is where the majority of Samsung's phone manufacturing takes place. The Gumi facility is set to close by 10PM 3/1 (KST) and the floor that the employee worked at will close by 10AM march 3rd, and disinfection/cleaning will take place. A samsung associate has said that there will be a temporary closing in the weekend, and there will be no issues with production once the factory restarts next week. 2) Today, a worker at a bank in LG Display's Gumi factory (구미사업장) was also diagnosed with the new coronavirus. LG has said that they are working with local authorities and the Ministry of Health to close off some areas for three days and is doing disinfection/cleaning. Today (3/1 KST) LG Display closed off their welfare area (basically a place in the factory with banks & resturants for workers), and closed off a module factory and is doing disinfection. They are set to reopen on the 3rd. Gumi factory makes, well, displays. 3) A worker at LG Innotech (a LG subsidiary that makes electronic parts like LEDs)'s factory in Gumi 1A factory (구미 1A 공장) was also confirmed to have COVID-19. The entire facility was closed and they are performing disinfection and cleaning on site. The company is planning to reopen on the 3rd after consulting the government and if deemed safe. 4) A worker at a cafeteria in Samsung Electronics Giheung factory (기흥사업장) was confirmed with the coronavirus. The worker is not employeed by Samsung, but a partner company that runs the cafeteria. The cafeteria has been closed off. Giheung factory makes semiconductors. 5) [Added 3/15] A confirmed case at SK Hynix Icheon factory. The worker and the family had gone into self quarantine last weekend (7,8) after a family memebr had shown symptoms. He was diagnose d with COVID-19 on the 13th. A SK Hynix source has said that the worker has followed the company's self quarantine policy, and has prevented any further infections, and that the worker did not work at the production line so no production delays have happened. The government has not done any disinfection/quarnatine too. Also: - On February 22nd, a worker at Samsung's Gumi factory was confirmed to have COVID-19. Samsung closed the facility till the 24th and cleaned the area. - on February 29th, a second worker at Samsung's Gumi 1st factory (구미 1사업장) tested positive. - On February 24th, LG Electronics' Incheon factory laboratory has been closed off, due to a worker's kindergarten daughter in Daegu being diagnosed with the new coronavirus. - No date specified, but SK Hynix closed their education facility and put 8000 workers on self-imposed quarantine at Icheon campus after a new worker was found to be in close contact with a COVID-19 patient. Not strictly related to tech, but there has been confirmed cases at Hyundai's Ulsan factory too. With these confirmed cases, the tech manufacturing sector in Korea has been put on high alert. Samsung Electronics has sent emergency messages to all workers and have made all workers wear masks when entering a factory or going on elevators and work buses. Group education (of workers) have been cancelled and workers have been required to wear masks when in conferences. LG Electronics has forbidden all outside visitors has recommended employees to restrict travel between factories. LG Display and LG Innotech has also forbidden residents of the Daegu and Cheongdo area from entering their facilities. SK Siltron, a SK subsidiary that focuses on manufacturing of silicon wafers that has its HQ in Gumi, has restricted access to the company and has placed heat cameras on all entrances to the facility to check temperature of all employees entering the facility. Hyundai, LS and many other non-tech related manufacturers have also been put on high alert too. ADDED 3/9: Quarantine issues with Samsung Display and Vietnamese government According to industry personnel on the 9th, Samsung Display was supposed to send 700 employees & equipment employees to Samsung D's Vietnam factory, but however Vietnam had decided to quarantine people entering the country from Korea for 14 days, thereby causing problems to factory operation. The factory in question is where thye flexible OLED module production line is. Samsung Display sent 700 employees to Vietnam for supply of smartphone panels for Samsung Electronics, Apple, Huawei in the second half of the year. If these personnel are not there in time, there can be manufacturing problems for major smartphone manufacturers. Samsung Display has asked the local government to allow the employees to arrive on time, since two weeks of postponing production line operation massively impacts the company. According to Vietnam media, Park No-hwan, South Korean ambassador to Vietnam, has also said that (rough translation) "there will be massive damage if Samsung Display technicians go through the 14 day quarantine" and that "we have requested that the local government do not impose a quarantine period for Samsung Display workers." This incident and Samsung Electronics' smartphone production is not related. Although the OLED module production line for the Galaxy S20 series is completed, this can impact models that are to be released in the second half. Update: Samsung Display workers have been exempted from Vietnam's mandatory quarantine. Thoughts: So far it's too early to tell, but I wouldn't be surprised if the virus starts interfering a lot with semiconductor/display/phone production. South Korea makes ~50% of the world's 3D NAND and ~70% of the world's DRAM so interference in production can mean that DRAM supplies & OLED display supplies take a big hit, raising prices. The virus isn't showing signs of stopping anytime soon, so this very well may cause problems in the future. It's already causing problems now. We'll have to wait and see.

Amazon have reportedly sold items at absurdly high increased prices by up to 1,000% during the course of the global pandemic. A report from the Citizen - a report of which is so extensive with graphs, charts, and the works - has conducted and found key evidence that Amazon has raised the prices of essential products ala price gouging to raise an insane profit during the pandemic, and would actually be considered illegal in many states. In the report, it was found that mid-2020, prices on items had tripled-to-quadrupled in price in order to raise an insane amount of profit on Amazon's end, which is ironic as Amazon had claimed to stamp down on price gouging earlier into the pandemic. Citizen's report ironically enough uncovers Amazon's shady dealings with these particular products and puts a foot down on Amazon's deceit and deception towards its own policies. It is also noted in the same report that Amazon was alerted to price gouging on bottled water during Hurricane Irma, and took no actions to address the gouging problem. This 2020 edition of Amazon not following its own policies, or indeed lacking a policy to follow in the first place is likely not the last. Citizen has also detailed items that were sold on Amazon between the months of February and August 2020, with Amazon's price, the price they were expected to be sold for, and of course, a percentage to put these numbers into perspective. The disposable face masks are the most heinous crime of the bunch, with how obvious face masks are for the current economy, it's no secret Amazon with its shady dealings would go out of their way to make sure they maximise their profit off the politically-fueled piece of facewear. Hand sanitizer is just as criminal, with the price being ramped up particularly in August, as the graph below shows: Amazon were also reported that third-party sellers were price-gouging as well because of the financial relationship between Amazon and them. The reason for this is because 25% of Amazon's entire retail revenue comes from third-party sellers, once again, this explains why Amazon would want to take the route that maximises old Jeff's pockets. The article was very long and exhaustive, and I take no credit in any of the data collected, that is all from the Citizen, and I highly recommend that you give the whole report a read as it is insightful to the heinous business that is Amazon at this time. There are a lot more data regarding the price comparisons on their official source that I have linked below. It is insidious that Amazon, one of the world leaders in capitalism, backed by the richest man in the world, would fall as low as to price gouge on their own website, and allow third-party sellers to do the same. It is heinous and sickening as I have been a customer for ages and haven't really thought twice about it. The report is really eye-opening, especially when read in full, about the entire scheme of the whole operation and the price gouging that Amazon and their partners have done in the past year. COVID-19 But this is not why we are here, we are here to join the legion of other folders from around the globe who have taken up the fight against COVID-19. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common across the world. These viruses can cause mild symptoms ranging from a fever and cough to more serious conditions such as severe pneumonia, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In December 2019, a new strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) was first identified in Wuhan City, China. This virus has now spread to other countries. The UK Chief Medical Officers have declared the risk to the public to be moderate. But the risk to individuals remains low. PASSKEYS! (they're really important) Don't forget to get yourself a passkey from the link below to ensure that you hit the points requirement, the passkey is a feature that was added a while ago to the Folding Client that helps to authenticate each user on the network, an added bonus of this is the fact that it allows you to qualify for QRB(Quick Return Bonus) Points, QRBs are extra points you earn for submitting work units more quickly, such as if you have faster hardware or let the client fold full time, rather than on idle. QRB credit is awarded after 10 WUs have been submitted. You can get your passkey from the link below. https://apps.foldingathome.org/getpasskey This is just a PSA for the new guys here, the folding team is a small close knit community, so here's a few things I'd like you all to keep in mind. It doesn't hurt to say thank you, if someone has genuinely helped you out don't forget to drop a reaction on their posts, help others where ever you can and finally we are a team first and always. Check your stats out here! Bare in mind it can take some time for your first WUs to appear so leave it a day or two. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/search.php Please follow the guides below to help with set-up and troubleshooting. These are mostly older guides but are still quite useful for most things, we are working on an improved guide and are hoping to have it ready for prime time withing the next month but in meantime these will have to do. Big Thanks to @Metallus97 for giving me a hand with the FAQ for the event and taking some of the load from me. Read the Event blog to keep up to date With any announcements!!!
