I am looking for a new laptop I'd mainly use for school and occasionally (let's say once every two weeks) for some private stuff (mostly programming). I do have an actual desktop PC though, so things like gaming can come short (30fps in Minecraft, if anything). My requirements are a Ryzen 3/i3, 8GBs of RAM, 256GB SSD and Windows 10. I wouldn't mind a convertible but it does not have to be one, especially since they are obviously more pricy. My budget is around 1000 USD, although I appreciate anything lower, haha. My biggest concerns are fan noise and battery life, although I am at this point willing to compensate for the latter by bringing a separate powerbank. Ideally the laptop should be able to sustain having OneNote, multiple Chrome tabs and IntelliJ open over an entire school day (8 hours) but as I said, I can deal with less. For the fan noise however, I don't want to make any compromises. Ideally I would get a fanless device but the one fitting the best out of the sparse selection there is, is the Surface Pro 7 (i5, 128GB) but it seems so ridiculously overpriced that I would not want to give Microsoft that money. So since I gave up looking for a fanless laptop, I am now looking for one that is still extremely quiet, maybe even silent under the load I described above (OneNote, Chrome, IntelliJ (also includes compiling of course, but I don't know how easy it is to get a laptop's fan not spinning up in that scenario, so I might just have to live with that)), as I do not want to disturb class. By extremely quiet, I mean basically unnoticeable. I have seen laptops described that way online before, but in tests even the best of these seem to create fan noise with levels of 30db while idling, which based on most of the scales I found does not seem to be that quiet (correct me if I'm wrong)? Anyways, I hope this is not too much to ask. Thanks in advance for any tips or help!

Hi everyone, I am looking for a new laptop for university, I study civil engineering so quite a lot of programs (And games ofcourse ;)) benefit from a discrete GPUs. And I really love the ability to take notes using a pen on my current surface book (1st gen). So I was wondering if anyone knows of an alternative to the surface book 3, I just do not use the detach function often enough, I just flip the screen but never go into tablet mode. Also ideally I would want to keep the tall aspect ratio and windows hello. Thanks for your help

Hey everyone, I hope you have a nice weekend I would love to get your recommendations for some new hardware. I already have a pretty beefy PC for development at home but I would love to get a new laptop with touch input for concepting and planning. I am a huge fan of concepting/scribbling with a pen on touchscreens. Do you have any recommendations for laptops with touch? I am currently looking at the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and the Lenovo Ideapad FLex 5. I put then on comparison list here: https://skinflint.co.uk/?cmp=2430333&cmp=2150577

Hello, I live in Germany and I´m a student. Id like to buy a fairly cheap convertible notebook. The best bang for the buck. But I just cant decide between these two laptops: Lenovo Yoga 510: http://shop.lenovo.com/de/de/laptops/yoga/500-series/yoga-510-14/ HP Pavilion x360: http://store.hp.com/GermanyStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=Z5E09EA&opt=ABD&sel=NTB Both are similar in specs and prices. Intitially i wanted to spend a maximum of 600 euros but at that price tag i could only get a core i3, so I thought Id go higher for better performance. I would love to hear opinions of people that had experience with similar or the same laptops and maybe give me some advice. In therms of display I also cant decide between 13 and 14 inch and need some tips for that too.

I am in need of a new laptop for uni work. I'm terrible with organizing paper notes, so i need to take notes on a computer, however most of my notes is mathematical formulas which cannot be typed out. So I'm looking for a laptop that the keyboard can be flipped around and used tablet style with a pen so i can write notes. The closest thing I can find is the new surface book, however it is $3,000 + here in Australia which is ridiculous as it is more than my desktop. Also i7 6th gen preferred, i know gen 7 is out but it is too expensive currently. Any suggestions?

I'm going to be going on an international trip in approximately 5.5 months. Currently for my travel computer, I'm rocking a surface pro 2 from a few years ago. While it's hardly used (it is my travel computer after all) and runs great, its is sorely lacking on the battery life department. The best I can get while using it is around 3 hours, and while I understand that this is fairly average for a laptop of sorts, it won't suffice for the kind of trip that I'll be going on. In that vein, I'm looking for recommendations on similar devices of a similar form factor preferably with the following features: have a screen 12-14 inches in size running at least 1080p come with or support a stylus (I like to draw) have a battery life of at least 6 hours for moderate use (watching videos, doing skype calls, etc) 4 GB of RAM is ok, but at least 8 GB is preferred I live in Canada, so any sorts of recommendations should be in CAD. Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks!

Device: HP ENVY x360 ag0003-ng Convertible Notebook OS: Windows 10 64bit Hi all, lately, I had to clear the SSD on my convertible and reinstall Windows afterwards. After reinstalling all of the drivers (both from the device manager and the official product website), I noticed that it doesn't automatically switch to the tablet mode when I flip the screen to the back of the keyboard. Also, after manually switching to tablet mode, it doesn't rotate by itself. Nevertheless, IF I flip the screen back, the keyboard turns itself off. I had a look into the device manager and noticed that the driver for AMD UMDF sensor is broken/doesn't work correctly. I get the error code "Code 31". I tried updating it and it even shows me that the best driver is already installed but it still doesn't work as intended. Any tips? Thanks -Aschenbecher2Go P.S.: Sry if my english isn't that understandable, I'm a student from Austria

Hi there, I would like to ask if anyone got the latest Thinkpad L13 Yoga 2-in1 laptop (10th gen intel CPU), and if it's any good for mid-to-heavy day to day usage (programming, mobile apps development, watching videos, streaming, taking notes, online work, light photo & video editing) also if anyone tested Linux and how it performs on this laptop would be really helpful. I'm thinking of getting this one for me, as I like all Thinkpad family (build quality and keyboard) and this one looks stunning with a wonderful price, so I wonder if there's anything hidden to make it that cheap! These are the specs I want: - i7-10510U CPU - 16G RAM I can see very good reviews from people on the product page here: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-l/ThinkPad-L13-Yoga/p/22TPL13L3Y1 Thanks.

Hello everyone! I've been looking for a laptop that would replace my old Acer Aspire E1 with Intel i3 and 4 GB RAM with a new laptop that I could use mainly for a lot of programming and light graphics (so IntelliJ IDEA, Visual Studio, Node.js, Hyper-V and stuff as light graphics editing in Affinity Photo, maybe some light gaming like Minecraft, Terraria or Rocket League) that would also work as a convertible laptop because I'm planning to use the laptop for my university studies for taking notes in OneNote with pen (I used to use graphics tablet connected to my laptop and taking notes on that, because I needed voice recorded as I was writing. It was janky but it did its job ?) The laptop that would allow me to do all these stuff and that I personally really like because of its style and usability points is Surface Pro 7 (256GB i5 8GB) HOWEVER that is a pretty expensive solution especially when you have to add the keyboard and pen (and I'm not living in US but EU and Microsoft Surface is not natively sold here, so the price is a bit higher than usual, but we have localized keyboards ?). I was looking for solution and I found pretty interesting ones: Lenovo IdeaPad C340-14IML (Intel Core i5 10210U, 8 GB, 256 GB, 14") (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-c340-14?dq=5686589) Lenovo IdeaPad C340-14API (AMD Ryzen 7 3700U, 8 GB, 1000 GB, 14") (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-c340-14?dq=5638853) Lenovo Yoga C740-15IML (Intel Core i5 10210U, 8 GB, 512 GB, 15,6") (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-yoga-c740-15?dq=5686615) HP ENVY x360 13-ar0104nc (AMD Ryzen 7 3700U, 16 GB, 512 GB, 13,3") (https://www.alza.cz/EN/hp-envy-x360-13-ar0104nc-nightfall-black-metal-d5696009.htm) My question is not really which one would you recommend. I have two different questions: Is there really a difference between the Intel Core i5 10210U and AMD Ryzen 7 3700U CPU? From performance, iGPU standpoint, or which one is more powerhungry) Should the choice between those CPUs really matter or is for example Intel really the winner here? Would you rather choose one of these cheper options over the actual Microsoft Surface for those purposes? Or would you prefer buying the more expensive Surface Pro 7? (Also I'm more into the HP ENVY as it's 13,3", would go for it as well, or do you think that the other options are better in any way?) I'm kinda getting lost in selecting a new laptop, so any help is really appreciated. P.S.: I saw discussions saying that I should wait for new CPUs to arrive, however here my country (Czechia), it's not really a thing, that old models would get really cheaper in any way, so waiting for those older laptops or waiting for new ones could really take about a year or so, so waiting here is not really an option. Also refurbished laptop is not something I'm into as I want my laptop to last for about the same time as my currently 8 years old Acer lasted ? P.P.S.: I found out that the IdeaPad C340 might be called Flex 14? Don't understand that naming scheme and why it might be different in various countries… Edit 1: As I didn't have much success searching for those laptops on Amazon, I at least added links to our czech store that offers site in english, so that looking for that online shouldn't be much of a hassle

Hello to this wonderful community, I am actually looking for a 2 in 1 laptop, I've been doing my research for quite some time now. But i'm still not sure. So, i decided to write a forum post here, One of the first Laptops that i saw was actually the Yoga series by Lenovo This was one of the one's that i was intrigued in Yoga 730 (US) Then after looking around at my local shops, i found the spin series by Acer This was in the brochure at my place, Spin 5 (MY) Spin 5 (GB) (Not exactly the same modal that i was looking for) I'm sending the brochure as the specific laptop cannot be found on the US / MY Acer website and I apologize for the bad quality, Both has: The differences that might matter 1. The stylus? (The acer has a free stylus included while the lenovo is sold seperately) 2. Price ( The Acer is cheaper ) 3. SSD ( The acer has both HDD and SSD while the lenovo is fully SSD based ) 4. Weight ( The acer is 2.2KG while the Lenovo is 1.89KG ) Some other things that might matter, 1. Should I wait longer? 2. Is there a convertible out there with a GTX1050TI or better ( Excluding the Surface Lineup. Those are too expensive ) 3. Comfort. ( I never owned a 15' laptop only saw them at retail stores. couldn't touch them lol ) If there's any other laptop that anyone wants to recommend it would be helpful, It'll be really helpful I do not want to make the same mistake like last time while buying a laptop... ( A new modal of the same laptop i've own came out literally the next day right after i had purchased it and it was at the same price. RIP ) I am not sure if I have forgotten anything. Sincerely, A Confused Buyer

Hi togehter, I just bought myself the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga L380 with the Activ Pen for writing on screen. It's a windows machine but since I work a lot on linux for university I want to run it on linux. The problem is, that I need the pen because I have a injured back and try to spare on heavy skripts etc. So far my research resultet in: in general linux can detect and work with the pen, but there is nearly no working software for actualy writing or editing with the pen. Some solutions found on the internet didn't work like: - turtle - standart nodes - chary tree - libre office draw - xournal did work, but is very slow and laggy The question is: does anyone has experience with this? maybe knows a working software or what else to try? Thank's for your help in advance, Tess

Hello fellow forum users, there's tons of these posts out in this thread about people looking for laptops for going back to school/uni, so I'm going to be direct to the point. I'm looking for a portable machine that can handle intense web browsing (over 20 or so chrome tabs), document and presentation editing (basically handle a office suite no problem), software development in particular it has to be capable to run VS Code, Node.JS, a C/C++ compiler and python with some AutoCAD thrown in there, the rest I can do by offloading the workload on the home server and workstation, it would be nice if it had a touchscreen with a stylus but that's the last of my worries. The machine has to be capable of running 6 to 8 hours on battery life. From what I've gathered from my past experiences I would need a 128, preferably 256 GB SSD, 8GB of RAM and a decent CPU. I would be buying the machine either from France or Republic of Moldova, the budget is 800 euros (nvidia why you must destroy my wallet). I was considering buying a 2nd hand MacBook Pro 13" from 2015 but what are your thoughts? Any suggestions for what device I should go for?

Several of the big companies (Dell, Lenovo, etc.) allow for laptop customization. I've ran across several smaller companies that will do custom builds as well. But I haven't seen any smaller or lesser known companies that do custom convertible laptop builds, only regular laptops. Has anyone come across any companies that do custom 2-in-1's? If so, please post their names/links. I would love to see check out their work, and maybe others would too.

I've just started attending an art school for Game Design, they're providing a computer- but it's the i5 4gb RAM 128gb SSD surface pro 2017... not exactly the best for intense modelling and computational tasks.. especially with just 4 gb of ram. I'll be selling it along with a couple of other computers, and should have a budget of around $2000 CAD (Currently around $1500 USD) or so for a good computer, one that can be used for school and beyond. The only requirements I have are that it must: Be light. I'm going to be carrying this around EVERYWHERE for school and eventually work, so something under 4 lbs would be ideal. have at least 8gb of RAM but preferably 16 gb. Thunderbolt 3 for that eGPU goodness down the line Pen support. I'm going to art school, so if I can use a pen to draw directly for my artwork It doesn't need to have lots of storage capacity, I can use an external drive if needed. Nor does it need to have beefy graphics (that's what the TB3 support is for) Any help is greatly appreciated :D!

So I have been looking into purchasing a convertible laptop for a wide variety of needs. If I am going to be spending around $1000 I want something that will I not feel cheated on for my daily use. I did some research and have been looking at options including the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro and the Yoga 730. While researching one of things I did was went to do price comparisons of various stores. What I found confused me and I am hoping that someone can shed some light why this is the way. It appears that stores like Best buy, Amazon or Newegg are selling laptops with the same name as Lenovo or Samsung but with different specs. For example HERE is the listing for the Lenovo 720 (older version of 730). You can see that all the 15" models come with a GTX 1050. But if I search on sites like Amazon the listings all come back with less powerful models for the same prices, see THIS listing from amazon. Is this normal where the manufacturing companies sell better version for the same price than you can get elsewhere? It has been annoying since I am trying to find the best deal and past experience has taught me to go to other sites than the manufacturer for better prices.

It just seems a little strange that more manufacturers haven't tried to replicate the design, it's practically the perfect balance between laptop and tablet (IMO). The only similar product I've seen is the Porsche Book One. Edit: By competitors I mean a tablet style display that detaches from the base, keeping the CPU and GPU in separate areas.

TL;DR: I've got around 1000€ and want a good convertible or 2 in 1 with good performance. Hello everyone, I have a Surface Pro 4 for a couple of months and I absolutely love it. There's literally been no other device that has been so useful and so enjoyable to use for me ever. But unfortunately, after 3 replacements due to hardware failure, I think it's about time to sell it. Looking online, it seems like I'll get around 700€ with all the accessories I have, maybe even a bit more. So, I am willing to spend up to 1000€ on a device that will replace it. There are a couple things I'm looking for in this new device. Performance is a must, maybe not as much graphically, but something like an m series or y series processor is out of the question. I also really value the form factor. This convertible style is why I love the Surface Pro 4. So I'm mainly looking for the same style, but 2 in 1s are also an option I guess. Repairability is something that I also really appreciate, as being able to fix the hardware myself is a big bonus, and I'm comfortable with messing around in my devices anyways. I will be using the device for many things, including Programming, Video, Audio and Photo Editing, maybe even some Gaming from time to time. I've done some heavy research on devices with the same convertible style and they all have their drawbacks. I considered the Transformer 3 Pro, but the battery life is horrendous and there's an issue with warping over time, which makes the fan have a grinding noise that can't be easily repaired as the screen is glued on. I also considered Lenovo's lineup, which seemed to be perfect. I even found some good deals on the Miix 720 which has everything I need, including Thunderbolt 3 with eGPU Support! However, the fan is reportedly quite loud and only had two steps, so it runs at full capacity most of the time. Now this could possibly be fixed, as you can easily disassemble the device. I would replace the thermal paste with some MX4, but could I do anything about the fan? I doubt it, but let me know. Dell also has some devices, but they're business oriented and I can't easily find them on eBay. Will check them again tho. 2 in 1s are also an interesting category that I haven't done much research on. I ended up finding the Dell Inspiron 5379 which has really good specs but the screen, design, SSD and pretty much everything else is like it's from 2015. I think I'm stuck here. There's nothing really that checks all the boxes. Ideally, I would love to get the Miix 720 and fix the fan issues, but I doubt that's possible. And I don't think I'll be using liquid metal on such an expensive device. I want your opinion on this please! Let me know if you have any good devices you'd recommend around this price point and with the same form factor. Thank you!

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a cheap 2 in 1 laptop / tablet to use for school. I already have a high end video editing pc at home, as well as a 24tb nas, so I'm not in need of crazy specs. I need your suggestions. What I need: -2 in 1 (ability to lay flat to draw on) -windows 10, NOT CHROME -Long battery life -touch screen -decent stylus support for notes -somewhat portable (no 21 inch laptops pls ) -ssd storage (128gb would do, 256gb ideal) What I want -decent screen (ideally ips, 1080p is fine) -thunderbolt 3 (for added expandability) -16gb ram (8 would suffice, but 16 ideal. If it's upgradable ram 8gb is fine) -bigger the ssd, the better -ability to charge though usb c -backlit keyboard -camera for taking pics of notes? Can't wait to hear your suggestions! It would also be ideal if I can buy it on Amazon.ca, as I've had good experiences returning, in case I end up not liking it. However, other stores are fine too. Also, what are your suggestions for a stylus to get with this? I assume I'll need to buy one, as they're rarely included. Thanks for all your help!

I am looking for a convertible laptop for use in college. My requirements are as follows: It needs pen/stylus capability (i like to take handwritten notes.) I will primarily use it for office apps, but will do light-medium photo editing (in Adobe Lightroom and photoshop) I may play a few light games (LoL, Dota 2, Solitaire, etc) It must have an SSD (I just cant deal with slow hard drives. And I have penty of exernal HDDs for mass storage) My budget is $800 but I may be able to extend it to $900. This includes the cost of Stylus and keyboard (for those tablets whose keyboards are sold separately). My first option is the new HP Envy x360 with the Ryzen 5 2500U processer. http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-x360-convertible-laptop-15z-touch-1za07av-1 The 250 gb SSD option is $860 and the stylus (though not available online, but when contacting HP) is $50 What are your sugesstions?

I am looking for a laptop that is a 2in1 AND has a dedicated graphics card. Other than the new Surface book, I know no convertible laptop that has an nVidia or AMD gpu inside. My question is this. Is there any other laptop beside the one mention above that has the portability and 2in1 function for (example the xps12 or a sony vaio multiflip.) AND houses a dedicated gpu?

What I use it for: - Productivity (Essays, presentations, and all that stuff) - Games (Light games such as Civilization and FTL: Faster Than Light. My desktop is for everything else) Integrated graphics will do and so will really any CPU. More than 2gb RAM is what I'd need though for any reasonable modern use. - General Use consisting of web browsing and other such stuff Requirements: -Tablet, optionally with a detachable keyboard. I have a keyboard I can plug in to the tablet with USB. A full size port is optional as I have an OTG adapter. -Gorilla Glass on the display for durability and the feel (smoothness and clarity) -IPS display for wide viewing angles -A price under 500 CAD or less if possible -Preferably a high resolution screen. -Decent Battery Life -More than 32gb storage (which most of the cheap ones have) What I'm looking at: -ASUS T90 Chi Transformer (In question because I am unsure of the material of the device) -ASUS T100 Chi Transformer -Surface 3 (Not pro) Are there any good convertible/tablets at this price range with that addressed? From what I've found, my best pick is the T100 chi or Surface 3 but both are a bit pricey here in Canada. I am not buying right now, so I can wait for their release.

Vaio Z is the most balanced convertible yet and absolutely destroys the competition. Unfortunately it isn't available in the U.S. Check out my review here: [removed]

Hey Linustechtips community! I've been recently looking for laptops, simply because I want to get one soon. I am a content creator, travel a lot and I require a device which is powerful and flexible. I also go to uni, which makes the use of a convertible ideal. Is there an adequate 2-in-1 (or 4-in-1) device which can make me happy? I've been looking around a lot. In most of these kind of devices their systems look really beautiful and well designed, but the hardware is pretty floppy still. Intel Core M's (with 1,1 ghz) and sometimes even i7's and i5's were present (Ultrabook builds), but they lack a discrete graphics-card. There is currently one 2-in1 device I know which has a NVIDIA GT 840 / 940 (embedded) inside, and this is the Lenovo Yoga 2 / 3 (2 has the 840, 3 the 940). Link to the Lenovo Yoga 3 14" with a NVIDIA. So, what are your thoughts on this? Will it be possible to get a convertible with a lot of power in 2015? I am aware that the market for convertibles is not really the same one for gamers / small-scale content creators, but technically, I believe it is currently possible to fit the necessary hardware for good performance. Thanks in Advance. Cheers.

The title really says it all. I'm looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that would be good for taking notes by hand with (so needs active digitizer), while also having the option for a keyboard. I narrowed it down to these two since they do what I want are around the same price point. Any suggestions? Which is better? Different and better option? Thanks everyone!

I'm in the market for a laptop replacing tablet convertible. I'm currently thinking of the surface pro 2, Dell venue 11 pro, or the Asus transformer trio. I know the Asus addition seems wierd but i get how android is definitely more energy efficient in light entertainment tasks and that definitely attracts me to it. But I also like the productivity side of windows, not to mention running full x86 programs. So out of the 3, which one would you prefer and if you have alternatives thy you think are better, which one would you recommend? One last thing, I would prefer if i could have an I5 chip.
