I am a High School student, currently in my senior year, currently our schools PLTW Engineering course. Our main project for the year is to essentially improve or create something to solve some sort of problem. I am looking for ideas that have something to do with computers. More details about the problem, or what you are suggesting are appreciated, and this is just to come up with some general ideas of problems people might be having. Please submit in this format: ENGINEERING PROJECT IDEAS Idea: Identify the Problem: Details about the problem: Possible solutions/improvements (if you have any):

Just got a new phone charger. It features one of the stiffer braided cables, so not only is it all twisted up from when it was folded in the box, but it is hard to un-twist it. I don't really know how to explain what my cable looks like very well, so I have a picture below, but how can I straighten this out? An ugly cable drives me crazy.

Currently, I have an RX 460 and an i5-7400. I am looking to buy a new mobo, case, graphics card, and a 144hz monitor. I want to go with an AMD graphics card bc of Freesync, but I am not completely sure which one to buy. So, here are my questions: How much better are the 500 series cards compared to the 400 series? If I want to get a lot out of a 144hz monitor, will an RX 470/570 do really well (100+ frames) on 1080p ultra settings? Or should I spend the extra money on an RX 480/580? I am clearly a beginner, so I need some help with getting the most out of my money.

So currently i have a computer with an i5 2500k, 8gb ddr3 and an rx 580. I need to upgrade my processor because of stutter and compatability issues i experience in newer games. Anyways, i was wondering if i should go for an i3 3770k or save up for something like a Ryzen 1600 af. I don't have enough money to buy a ryzen processor right now, so if it's not worth to upgrade to the i7 i would need to save up for a bit to get a new mobo, ram and a cpu. Any help to decide what would be the better pick would be greatly appreciated.

Just for my own curiosity. Please leave suggestions for other graphics cards that you recommend to upgrade to in the future!

I am almost done with my system. I only need two things to start using my new computer, a graphics card, and Windows 10 (yay!). I will have about $500 to spend. I will have about $300 to spend since I am buying a key from Microsoft. For that price, what should I choose? If I can get one, should I get a Vega 56, or a GTX 1070? If not that, should I buy the RX 580/590 or a GTX 1060? I could wait to see what Navi has to offer but I would like to finish my system soon. I hope I can find a good deal on a new card or maybe even a used card. although I would prefer new. Anyways, open to suggestions. I will list my system specs if that helps: Ryzen 5 2600, 12GB Mixed RAM, 750 Watt Power Supply, 1 TB Hard Drive, 128 GB SSD, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower.

So ive been looking into upgrading my computer, first I started looking at new GPUS, then to CPUS, finally I realized that my motherboard cant support anything lol. So ive decided to look into upgrading my motherboard. I got a budget of 150$ and I want it to be able to support ryzen. I do not know much about computer hardware at all so while ive been researching I kept getting stuck. I wanted to make sure that it can support my ram, graphics card, CPU and other hardware. So im wondering if there is any software that can easily find compatible hardware because im kin-dove done with this. If there isn't, id be more than happy to take any recommendations. Here is my hardware (please not that I copied this hardware from my AMD radeon settings software thing and that I dont know what much of it means as in the numbers). Thanks in advance! Radeon Software Version - 18.11.1 Radeon Software Edition - Adrenalin Graphics Chipset - Radeon(TM) RX 460 Graphics Memory Size - 2048 MB Memory Type - GDDR5 (I took a computer software test thing and it said that my memory type was DDR3 so I dont know what this number is all about) Core Clock - 1210 MHz Windows Version - Windows 10 (64 bit) System Memory - 8 GB CPU Type - AMD FX(tm)-4300 Quad-Core Processor

So I have a brand new Samsung SSD but don't have anymore SATA cables. Now I could order one and wait anywhere from 3 weeks to 1month, or I could use a mysterious SATA cable from what is probably an old PC from 5-10years ago So I'd like to ask if there is any real risk involved? Like, damaging or outright destroying my new SSD. I would very much like for that to not happen :)

So, I have a computer I am about to upgrade. It currently has a Pentium G3250 in it, but I am going to upgrade it to an i5 4460. It has 8gb of RAM and a Radeon HD 7570. I am upgrading this computer because I want to livestream myself playing older and lighter video games (CS:GO, CoD MW2, Rocket League, etc.) for 24 hours straight. Does this PC sound capable of handling that task?

Hey, I was looking at 144hz monitors. My budget is about $190. I have found 2 options that work for me: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-ED242QR-Abidpx-FREESYNC-Technology/dp/B07598HLB5/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1529259944&sr=1-1&keywords=monitor+144hz+gaming http://www.microcenter.com/product/470186/KG240_24_Full_HD_144Hz_DVI_HDMI_DP_FreeSync_Gaming_LED_Monitor Which is the better deal? Especially because this will be part of a dual monitor setup, so I'm not sure if the curved monitor will work.

I am an Australian HSC student interested in computers, coding (although I don't know much beyond basic HTML) and am required to create an innovative product, system or environment for a subject called design and technology. I found several forums about the nature of thebottlenecker.com and how appalling it is. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to improve on it, and if you know, how to code a similar calculator to the one on the website. I appear to have taken upon a task that I simply don't know how to complete and if anyone could help me with: - How to code a bottleneck calculator - How to collect data on computer bottlenecks - How to improve on thebottlenecker.com or anything else, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance P.S - I am creating the 'improved' website with WIX

I am looking for a new monitor to add to my setup as a second display, and here is basically what I want: - The most important part is that it needs to be 27". - It needs to be able to game on (most monitors work, but maybe a monitor that works better for gaming? not sure) - It should have a higher refresh rate than 60 hz, 75 is acceptable but if its possible 120 hz or 144 hz would be awesome (but for $200?) - As an added bonus, Freesync would be pretty nice, as well as built in speakers So if you know a ton about monitors, any advice would be great! I really want help because I love a good monitor, and I don't want to go wrong!

Hi, I have been trying to look for a nice gaming headset that I can use under $40. Really my only two main requirements are for them to be over the ear and have surround sound. I know it's a little bit of a stretch to require surround sound in a headset this cheap, but I think it is super nice to have (probably). Oh, and I also want them to be comfortable, but thats already obvious, isn't it . Also, it will be used on PC almost all of the time. Thanks guys!

Hey, so I currently have an RX 460, and it works fine for 1080p 60fps gaming at medium to low settings, but anything further is just inconsistent in FPS. So, with a budget of $200, what is the best graphics card I can get for 1080p Ultra (or if it comes down to it, just high settings)? What about $250? I'm not the greatest shopper/deal hunter, and I also am very vulnerable to buy something that I thought was a great price then be disappointed when I found out that I made a mistake, so any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I'm getting ready to build my first computer, but I'm not quite sure what hardware to use. My budget is a little more than 500 USD. I don't do much gaming, but I'd like to be able to play GTA V at high settings at 60 FPS at 1080p. I will be doing a mix of 3D rendering with Cycles, machine learning with TensorFlow, CUDA programming, and even a little CAD; so the GPU is pretty much top priority. Due to the fact that Cycles, TF, and CUDA programming are only available to NVidia GPUs, I'll need an NVidia GPU. I'm not sure if I should get a GTX 1050 or 1050 ti now or wait until mainstream Volta cards come out and buy the same card for a lower price. I've even considered buying something as low as a GT 1030. I'm also unsure of what CPU I should get. I could either buy a Ryzen 3 1200 or 1300X and pair it with 8GB of expensive DDR4 RAM, buy an old Intel Core i5 or i7 and pair it with 16GB DDR3, buy a newer Intel Pentium with 8GB DDR4, or buy an old AMD FX series CPU with 16GB DDR3. Keep in mind that I'm currently using a laptop with a Core i3 6100U, so anything would be better than what I have now.

This is weird, but I have this microphone with basically no purpose unless I have a way to extend the length of the cable. Ok, maybe it doesn't have a cable, but you get the point if you look at the picture below. I just randomly have this and it actually has okay sound quality. I don't even remember getting it, so its probably pretty cheap. Anyways, I thought about maybe using it as a lav mic. But as you can see, it is literally impossible with the configuration of the audio jack literally ON the mic. Therefore, it is only useful for connecting up to my phone and using for calls. Can I buy some sort of extender to be able to make this into a lav mic with maybe a 5 foot cable? BTW, I'm fairly new to tech, so any advice would be great.

Hello all, I recently discovered the awesomeness that is the LinusTechTips YouTube channel. I have been binge watching a lot of their content for the past month or so that I've been subscribed. I had seen a couple of Linus' videos over the years, but only subscribed recently as I started to do research into building my own custom PC. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm gonna be going with, but I wanted some input from a community like this before I went ahead and finalized anything. Let's start off with the parts list for your consideration. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/FF8Tm8 First, some quick background on me. I am 28 years old, I have been interested in computers and gaming since I was very young and built my first computer at the age of 15. I also recently (2 years ago) put together a computer for my little brother as a Christmas present. I am not new to computers, but nor am I an expert. I realize I may be over reaching my abilities with my goals for this build, but I'm pretty confident and any advice with any aspect would be greatly appreciated. I am going to be primarily gaming, streaming, recording video, and doing some light image/video editing. I also currently work as a web developer and may in the future be using this home computer for freelance work in that field as well. As you can tell from the hard drives I'm a bit conflicted on what configuration I want to go with. I plan on at least having one PCI-e SSD with one HDD for storage, but I'm not sure if its cost effective for what I'm doing to go with a large PCI-e SSD or a small one with a normal SATA SSD for the bulk of my stuff. Also, would anyone recommend stepping down to the 6700k and z170 MOBO with the intention of purchasing a new Kaby Lake CPU down the road(assuming all z170 MOBOs can run Kaby Lake processors) to replace it? In other words, do you think I'd get more value by saving money now and upgrading later versus spending the premium now and sticking with it longer? Just something I've been wrestling with since I read about Kaby Lake. What I am going for in my build is both performance and aesthetics, in about equal measure. The parts list does not show the custom sleeved cables and magnetic LED strips I plan on getting for the case, but I am going for a totally custom look. Right now I'm set on a white build with light blue and light purple accents with the same color LED lighting, meant as a Heroes of the Storm type of theme. I'm trying to find as many parts as I can that fit the color scheme, but as it is a bit of an unusual one, I do plan on doing custom paint/plastidip on some white components. My budget for this build is $2,000 or less. As I mentioned already, any help, opinions, comments, and/or suggestions are much appreciated.
