... may you please, in this Forum create a SUPER Category on par to the main ones, so the Community will be able to segment different issues such as UI, Accessibility, Productivity, tools Drives (graphics card, etc.). I'm not suggesting turning this whole forum into a Linux support forum, but it could be home to the "movement" that will finally get Linux to be the standard OS worldwide (in despite the many distros). I hope you bother to help focus on this "movement" that even they (Linus and Luke) probably aren't aware they've started. REMEMBER the Ice Cold Water Bucket Challenge?? Make it so... Nominate other YouTubers into challenging them to switch to Linux for 3 months and report on it. So I have been getting into Data Analysis and to practice I decided something cool to study with lots of variables and order and plot, etc would be CPUs! Remember this video?: Well I decided to grab the spreadsheet Linus made and get to work on it but a few problems arose when I was done with it.. First of all it is quite out of date! It's 2017 and Ryzen is here. Today we started seeing the benchmarks of the 1800x and soon there will be more R7s and then the R5 and R3.. Wouldn't you like to see how these are compared to other existing processors in terms of cores, threads, price, TDP, etc? So you can get idea what I got check out this nifty little app i got going: https://vicbar.shinyapps.io/shiny_benchmarks/ The idea is to have ALL that info in a very explorable way with the power of the visualization power of the R programming language! The community project part starts here. I have the app and am actively developing it further. Its pretty bare bones still.. But most importantly the amount of info is very very small. The video above covers practically only Skylake and Broadwell CPUs, so I was thinking we could crowdsource a databank so I can we can keep up to date with this awesome time for the CPU market and have something that is ours. So that is what I propose. That you guys donate some secs of free time to fill this .csv file which I can use to update app quickly! :https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C7OkqOMGur-9S__0Vsp8_k5ABcMcu645PA0Pm8kbhbc/edit?usp=sharing Check the app out, I find it pretty interesting to browse a data bank of CPUs like that, its great for some quick and easy visual comparison and benchmarking (prices and characteristics). Now I'll talk about the future. With this spreadsheet Linus also gives on about GPU overclocks, I haven't gotten to that one yet but I plan to, maybe. What I really want is to have a comparison about the different sources we as tech enthusiasts get our info. i.e. Have one app where we can consult and visualize the different results that our favourite youtubers get from their benchmarking. I know it would be hard and maybe useless because of all the different methodologies they use, but I can help us get an idea, and a wide picture of what Ryzen (or any other future hardware) has to offer. (looking at 180ti). So concluding, I am going to go on analyzing and playing around with data, I hope some LTT forum members come along for the ride and help in having our own data bank. Also if this goes well it can turn into larger and more interesting projects. TL;DR I'm doing a project and I could use a hand or two on gathering data on all CPUs. The columns I'm going to use are these, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C7OkqOMGur-9S__0Vsp8_k5ABcMcu645PA0Pm8kbhbc/edit?usp=sharing Feel free to edit! I'm doing so to make this small app more useful and I make this project available to the LTT Community: https://vicbar.shinyapps.io/shiny_benchmarks/

Hi all, I've recently come over from Toms Hardware forums as of today due to some questionable mod actions and subsequent reprimands regarding threads I assisted with. The problem was that they supposedly were written in a specific manner which was deemed to be unsuitable, and I was annoyed with not being physically permitted to help out to the best of my ability, so i've moved here! I wanted to give an example scenario and see if this was okay on this forum. A user with low end specs, E.g. a Pentium E2210, 4GB of RAM and a GT 710 wants to know what low end games he can run, but says he doesn't have the money in the cards at the moment for an upgrade. As an answer I suggest a few low end games he hasn't mentioned yet, and also mention as a side note that his hardware is somewhat lacking if he wants to play anything other than lower requirement titles into the future, and subsequently point him towards either a 1050/GT 1030 for a bit more oomph later down the line, or if he saves up, to look at something like an entry level PC list, which I proceed to post purely as a suggestion. Would this be considered an acceptable response while retaining relevance to the question?

Hello everybody! I noticed you guys actually had a forum for introducing yourself, sooo here I am. I'm Goblin, I've been lurking here since September 2015 after I nuked a 970 during a hybrid mod. I'm a long time (17+ year) poster over at ArsTechnica though I really appreciate the difference between the two forums. I don't have a high post count but I've tried to bring you all quality content with a slight sense of humor. Some of my past threads include: Mining Monero (XMR) with my current gear? Let's look at some numbers How To Install Pi-Hole in Windows via Hyper-V & Debian (network wide ad-blocking) (video included) Extreme LTE Networking (double yagi) (t-mobile) (band 12) (video included) Building satellite dish 4G/LTE signal boosters out of spare parts 970 Mod Failure! Where did I go wrong? (Kraken X31 via G10 Bracket) (Pics) You can see there's not many I've created here, though I have tried to be accurate and helpful throughout all of them. As you might very quickly notice reading the XMR thread, I can at times be very long winded. So be prepared for that, though other then the warning I just thought I'd drop in and say hello to everybody! Soo LTT forums, how you doing? I like to read you & see what all the kids are up to now a days with your spinners, what nots, and other nonsenses. 'Goblin

Recently I have been trying to figure out a way where a newer generation of people could experience what it was like to live with purely video games from the 1980's and 1990's. However, I am not limiting this to only new collectors or people who would be interested in doing this, it would also be helpful to this community if we had some older collectors put in their own two cents and helpful tips for everyone. So overall new, and old collectors like myself, could go back like it was the 1980's and play video games from that era. To give an example to start this group/community off we would start with the NES with the original Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt game. From there we could work out a system of 'releasing' games, so there would be a post when a 'new' game was going to be introduced. Obviously there won't be nearly as big of a time span between games as there actually was in the 1980's, but let's say we start the first week off with Mario and Duck Hunt, and then in two weeks we release a game like Kung Fu, since it was a black box game. None of this is set in stone, this is completely open for discussion and changes but I thought it would be an interesting concept to try out. Also if this would some how take off large enough we could create our rendition of Nintendo Magazine except call it something different with our own branding/name. Small side note, is there will eventually be 'new' 'releases' of consoles, but we would have to get far enough, so for example SNES and Sega Genesis. If you would like to contact me or discuss this somewhere other than on this forum post you can reach me on Discord @MrOldMC #3947

Goal: To track the amount of tree the LinusTechTips community has donated. How to join in 1. Check out LTT video about it: 2. Screenshot you donation on the #TeamTrees website or from the receipt sent to your email 3. Edit out your personal details 4. post in this thread with that screen shot (in a spoiler) and the amount you donated Example post: I donated $2 today FAQ: Do I have to donate? Of course not. Not everyone can donate due outside factors. How do I help if I can't donate? Spread the word. share the videos on #TeamTrees with people who aren't in the loop or talk to people in person. Why did I create this threat? As a member of the forum since 2015 and a folder for the LinusTechTips team since 2016 I have seen the generosity of the people in this community. I wanted a place where people in the community and go and look at what their community did to help better our planet. (sort of like r/place experiment. groups can see their efforts immortalized in the final picture and can remember the stories that led to it.) What if I donated before this post and don't have a screenshot? The #TeamTrees website is keeping track of every donation. however the "see all" button isn't working at the moment you must wait until that feature is added to post. You can take a screenshot of the receipt of the donation from you bank account or PayPal, but I STRONGLY recommend that you remove or cover all personal information. Where can I go to find more information? The best place to go is #teamtrees.org and read the FAQ on their website. Alternatively they have emails listed in the FAQ if you require further assistance. Do I have to use both the website and YouTube to donate like in your example post? No pick what ever is easiest for you. I did both as to provide an example for each method. I am having trouble donating though YouTube. Donating through YouTube might be blocked in your country so try the website if you are having trouble. *** Mod edit: Changed this a bit to reflect more that this is about LTT video. This is under review, and might be removed or edited more. -LogicalDrm

Hello Everyone, Is there a policy for promoting Live Streams to the LTT community? I understand this could get messy. I bring this up because i'm moderating a new Twitch channel which will be hosting a Charity stream in near future. I would love to invite the tech community to participate without looking like a click-baiting shill. 1. Is there an appropriate place to promote streaming communities on the LTT forum? 2. Is there a policy in place for promoting streaming communities? Thank you,

Can we help LTT avoid the "wooden PC case" and design a fully 3d printed and laser cut case for them? I can give Sketchup a go for really quick prototyping designs. I could give a go at a free copy of SolidWorks or similar (I've specced out the measurements of a case in it before, but am a total novice ). An example of the designs I've tried in Sketchup: If you think it is worth the community designing one to at least try to put forwards to LTT to try and make, then I am open to suggestions for a theme! Once there, I can post up some quick design ideas. What theme would you like to see in my our design?

So basically the idea I have in mind is to compile all of the songs LTT related channels use in their videos, whether it be BGM or B-Roll music, and put it in a convenient playlist. Here's what I have so far. Basically all I need you to do is either reply with a video you wanted to know the background music for and couldn't find and I can give it a hand (yes this does help with the list because it gives me an idea of where to look for music others are interested in), or if you know the music from a video then you can just reply with the video and song name and where it appears. Under the playlist I'll keep track of what's what in case you were wondering. So, I'm very new to PC building but want to buy a system that doesn't break the bank, but can still pay some decent games without setting fire to itself. I found this on amazon, but many say the CPU is trash. I want to get your opinion on the matter. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fierce-Gaming-PC-Desktop-Computer/dp/B071NRSXZC/ref=sr_1_11?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1515283683&sr=1-11&keywords=gaming+pc I would like to let the people who are suggesting me ideas, I do have a budget at 450 GBP and as I'm new, I don't know how to build a PC of my own without me breaking the motherboard. Anyways, why you guys fight about why I'm not building my own rig and how I can save more just by building it myself. I'll just go and google "how to stop pc nerds" and simply wait it out. Peace and Im out ツ Crumbs

This is a Google Forms survey about networks and internet connection, as i think it's intresting to know what type of connection is used in different regions, what ISP people consider good and etc. etc. etc. So if you have a tiny bit of time, please participate in it. Every question is completely optional to answer, so if you don't know/want to answer - then do not. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1pzizhg9VrPTTwdlsZfm8JAHLIA7cC39rTozDpeHADnQ/ I will post results some time later in this topic (or you can see them yourself by clicking on a link after completing this survey)

Hello, Do you know blitzortung.org ? http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php It is a community-based project that propose realtime maps of lightning over the world. It consists of a network of VLF detectors which are listening to strikes. When it detects something a packet (signal wave, time and position) is sent to computing servers which determine the origin of the electromagnetic source by computing heperbolic curves based of the different signals sent by at least 11 detectors. This network is well developped in Europe but not so much in America (north and south ). I thought that some members are maybe weather/electronic enthousiasts that could be interested in that project. Enjoy!
