Hi forum. I'm trying to decide between the University of Colorado Boulder and Purdue University. My major is Aerospace Engineering. I love both campuses and the classes I saw. Obviously CU has a nicer surrounding area but it also seems like Purdue has newer facilities. I was accepted into Purdue honors so that's a big draw for me and I'm still waiting on CU honors. If anyone has any experience with this stuff I'd love the advice/help. Which campuses are better? Does one offer something that the other doesn't? What about student outcomes and experiences not covered in their websites? Everyone I talk to at each school says they love it so I'm not worried about making a 'wrong' choice but obviously I want to make a good choice for the next 4 years. Hopefully it doesn't come down to a coin toss! Thanks!

Budget (including currency): $1,500 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AI/ML model training, general computer science related tasks, obviously gaming Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I've never built a PC before, even though I have watched countless videos on how to, and I am looking to get something that will set me up for a while. For some context, I'm currently a second-year comp-sci student and will be specializing in Machine Learning and AI. I haven't had too many courses specifically related to those fields yet so I'm really unsure what kind of hardware works best for it. The only PC I have as of right now is a Dell XPS 13 with an i5-1135G7 and 16 GB of RAM. I have no complaints about this laptop, but as of yet, I haven't really used it for demanding tasks and when compiling C++ code or even trying to play Minecraft, it definitely struggles. As a little side note, I am very deep in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Airpods, and Homepod Mini) and I'm also not opposed to getting something from Apple, with the acknowledgement that the gaming performance will suffer. I have a PS5 and as much as I'd love a PC to play much better games, it is not my biggest worry. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm looking to buy this system at any point in the next year. Thanks!

I'm heading to Uni in August, and I have been struggling over picking a computer for ages. I don't necessarily need anything too strong since I'm planning to go into business, so just a spreadsheet machine should work, but my love for gaming has made my decision much harder. My decision is somewhere between either: Razer Blade 16 with prob a 4070 or 4060 15" M2 Mackbook Air + Steam Deck for games While both Razer and Apple offer student discounts, a Macbook Air and Steam Deck combination is still cheaper than a Blade 16 with a 4070, and about the same as a blade 16 with a 4060. I've seen recently steam advertising both Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy as Steam Deck Compatible (which I have trouble believing) but made me wonder just how capable the Steam Deck is. I don't play a lot of intense games, with the exception of Cyberpunk, RDR2, and hopefully Starfield when it comes out, and around 97% of my library is in steam, though I would be rather upset if I had a Steam Deck, and still had to wait until break to play Starfield because it isn't capable. On the other hand, the advantage of the Mac over the Blade 16 is obviously how well it integrates with my iPhone and iPad (which I also have for school). I'm also aware that the Nvidia Mobile GPU's don't often perform nearly as well as their Standalone counterparts. I am having a very hard time deciding between the two, but with the Deck's on the Steam Summer sale, I thought I'd get some other people's opinions, and possilby grab a good discount. So if you were in my shoes, which one would you choose? (Maybe in two years when I move off campus and have a bit more space I'd consider bringing my tower PC with me, but I just don't see it fitting in a dorm)

Man, just like Linus has said countless times, trying to research and buy a gaming laptop is one of the most convoluted and frustrating things out there in tech. I'm trying to buy a laptop for college and some decent gaming, I'm not trying to play Crisis or Microsoft Flight Simulator, but I'd like something decent. Right now, the specs I'm looking for is: 16gb DDR4 or better A decent quad of hex core CPU that allows me to run simulators or intese calculations (I'm an enginering student) A 2070 or better (for a bit of future proofing, I don't want some 1650 or something) Decent battery life so it can last a few classes I don't need crazy storage because I already have an SSD I'll just throw in I don't really care about the display, though 75hz or above wouldn't be bad I've been looking just about everywhere, and I cant find anything under $ 1,000 which i know seems optimistic, but I feel like these requirements aren't too crazy, I'm not even asking for DDR5 or a 4000 series gpu. I'm paranoid about over paying for a name brand rather than a quality product. Maybe I'm way left field here, and I know I'm not the first or the last person to complain about this, but man, buying a laptop is such a pain.

This seems like a fairly good deal for the components, does anyone have experience or advice? Also open to other recs around the same price point or lower. https://www.costco.com/msi-summit-e16flip-16"-touchscreen-2-in-1-laptop---13th-gen-intel-core--i7-1360p---fhd%2B-1920-x-1200---geforce-rtx-4060---windows-11.product.4000175312.html

I need to purchase a custom built laptop for Animation and need a lot of high end components. The must haves (minimum) are: 17in UHD Monitor i9 13900HX 32 GB RAM 4800MHz 1TB NVMe Gen 4 OS Drive 1TB NVMe Gen 4 Storage Drive NVidia RTX 4080 Looking online I only found Origin, Falcon NNW, Xidax, AVADirect, and Razer that can match these specs. Out of these brands which would have the best service and have the best rep as far as laptop builds? Thanks for any help.

Hello, I want to start with the fact that I planned to buy Framework, but even after 2 years of waiting it still isn't available in my country. I'd love something similar to it, but they are one of a kind company and the only other project I heard of was from Dell I reckon and that was only concept. At least if it can have "open" BIOS. Last laptop I had was 1300€ HP and it had the most basic looking BIOS. I couldn't do anything, not even disconnect battery through it. Country: Czech Republic (Europe) Budget: 1260 - 1900 € (the less the better) Open to refurbs/used? Yes Size: Any Weight: Any (the less the better) Purpose: College (IT - programming, some 3D work, photo editing) OS: Windows / Linux (dual-boot capable, I heard some laptops aren't playing nicely) Battery life: at least 6 (I am fine with having a powerbank -> laptop needs to be USB-C charging capable, even if not full speed) SPECIAL REQUIRMENT: Needs to be resellable in a 6-12 months as I have hope Framework will come out. I get this might be stupid request, but I bet that some brands or models are not as desired on used market. Hence the price range being so wide (higher retail price = better resell price?) Thanks!

I am going off college begging in august. I'm looking for windows laptops with at least a 30 series card, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. This laptop needs to have good battery life for when I am out and about using various CAD programs, capable of running video games at decent speeds (probably when plugged in), good cooling, and a relatively small size considering the rest of my desires for this machine. I would preferably like to stay in the $1200-$1800 range with around $2000 being my absolute cap. I know that finding a laptop with all these requirements is a little tough and if sacrificing one of them is needed then so be it. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi everyone, I am looking to buy a laptop for the first time and need some help deciding what to get. Currently I have PC that I built myself but I need a laptop for college. I'm looking to get something with a decently powerful gpu (2070 or 3060), 16gb of ram, and a 6 core processor. I would be using it for all my college stuff, video editing, and some gaming here and there. My goal would be to spend less than $1300 on it because that is roughly what I could get for my current PC. I am open to buying off of eBay as a lightly used or open box item as well. One more thing is that I do have two monitors that I would want to use to dock the laptop so the screen doesn't have to be super nice. I think the biggest thing for me though is that I don't want it to scream "gamer" with the appearance. There are a lot of good laptops with the specs I want but they just look big and bulky and not really for me. I am looking at the 2019/2020 Razer Blade 15 with a 2070 but that would most likely be a used item. Would this be a good option? I would really appreciate some suggestions as I don't know too much about the laptop world. Thanks!!

For some context, i bought my own laptop for college and i have been it using it with no problems so far. Last month i upgraded to win11 to try out the new features, i was concerned about the perf impact win11 would have on my laptop since its not particularly powerful. I decided to revert to win10 but i had to flash it back to win10 because im an idot. I registered my windows key and everything was working fine. I do use some of win10 built in tools like snip & sketch and the clipboard quite often, but apparently for whatever fukin reason windows thinks im using a college provided machine and not my own personal machine. (also why tf is the clipboard deactivated but not say other tools? why the clipboard? why, microsoft?) For further context, the only places where i have my student account logged in is ONLY in Office apps. Teams, word, ppt and etc. I DO NOT use it to log into windows or anything else. But upon clicking the "manage your account" link in settings gets me to here: Now the interesting thing is when i go into the "Devices" section i get this: That is indeed my laptop (double checked in windows settings), but the question i have is, is there anyway to get around these "organizational restrictions"? I'm thinking if there is any command prompt/ power shell scripts i can use to gain back some features or unbind my laptop from the college system but still be able to use office? However, im gonna assume Microsoft thought about this ^ and either made it really fukin difficult or outright impossible. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that a VM or using the "Live" versions of Office are my best hopes ("live" office is a radioactive dumpster fire that i want nothing to do with.) Actually now i think about it, maybe i should just contact IT? The staff here has been pretty helpful and friendly so far, so maybe i should just do that before i bork my laptop. Heck i might learn a thing or 2 as well. But i would like to know your guys thoughts on this

this is a dumb question but my budget is under $1000 and i found 3050 laptops with in my budget, but i found a Zephyrus G14 within my budget with a 1650 which i have hear is an extremely good laptop. so my dilemma is should i get a laptop with up to date specs, or get a well reviewed supposedly reliable laptop that out dated. keep in mind this is gonna be my man PC for the next 4 years cause of college (mechanical engineering), hence why I'm being super picky and double checking everything. Thanks for your time, and happy new year

Hello there, I believe I've posted about my inquiries and questions about displays in the past, though after spending a summer semester at my University, I feel like I've become even more lost than I was before when choosing a monitor. I can remember going from liking LG's 27" and 34"+ gaming monitors, to Dell's recent 34" widescreen "work-from-home-solution" monitor (https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-34-curved-monitor-s3422dw/apd/210-axns/monitors-monitor-accessories), and even thinking about getting a TV, especially knowing that I'll be the type of person to watch movies with my roommate or my friends. So, I need some help and some opinions on what I should do. First, I'd like to mention my computer that I'm packing: a Dell XPS 17 9700, equipped with an i9-10885H (8 cores, 5.3 GHz), 32 GB memory, 1 TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q, and the base 1920*1200p internal display. I bought this laptop since I'll be studying Mechanical Engineering, and with the Engineering program I took over the summer, this computer was very effective at doing SolidWorks stuff, and rendering my final projects and parts. In addition - and even know Dell just came out with the 9710 with RTX 3060 GPUs (I got this 2 months before it came out ) - I wanted this thing to last me my fours years of undergraduate, I still wanted a big internal display, though I didn't want to be carrying a bulky gaming laptop going from class to class. Knowing that my laptop's display is already 1080p (or, 1200p for 16:10 aspect ratio) and is on a small screen, I believe going 1440p/ QHD would be a good option for me to experience good image quality without going over the top (i.e., I don't think I could benefit from 4K, especially since I won't be doing photo/ video editing). I've recently been out to my local big box stores (i.e., Best Buy) and took a look at a friend's 1080p, 27" HP monitor - ~1+ year old - and I felt that at a healthy viewing distance, I felt that the viewing experience wasn't too nice. Otherwise, I also want to give some stories/ experiences of what I've seen in college thus far. My first one is a little crazy (at least to me), because this guy had a baaallin' gaming tower and a 4K, 144Hz monitor. I mean, this person had an NVIDIA RTX 3090, 128 GB memory, a very high-spec Ryzen 5000 CPU (I forget which one) - definitely ready for 4K Max gaming at 80-90+ FPS. Like, we were running Cyberpunk 2077 at 80 FPS on 4K Max settings . My friend let me play the Resident Evil 2 Remake on 4K, near max settings and we were getting 100-110 FPS, and it felt amaaaaazing. What I got from this experience was (a) pretty damn good image quality since it was a 4K IPS display, and experiencing high frame rate gaming (at least, high frames for me) on AAA titles. Like I said, playing Resident Evil 2 at over 100 FPS felt so amazing to me, especially coming from playing Resident Evil 8 on my XPS 17 on 1200p high settings at ~60 FPS, and prior to this, playing all my games on a PS4. As I stated before, too, viewing the 1080p displays in store and at my friend's place, I feel like 1080p won't suffice, so I'd say that 1440p/ QHD is a must. Then, there was the time my friends and I watched a movie in our friends' dorm. I'm not certain what particular TV it was, or other stuff like it's pixel count, panel type, refresh rate, etc., though I believe it was around 48-50" in size and likely 60 Hz, as most TV's seem to be. What I loved so much about this TV was that generally, it's sooo big, and well, I'm a sucker for a big TV or display. In addition, and something more deep, I'd say I'm more extroverted than introverted, in that I get energized from doing things with people/ being in a social environment, rather than getting energized from being by myself or in a smaller group. More so, if I'm by myself for a day, no matter if I'm stuck in my dorm all day or even if I'm out and about, if I'm by myself without my friends/ acquaintances, I'll start feeling anxious/ depressed/ what have you (i.e., I feel like crap). Then again, I'm sure I could take one of the TV's in one of my residence hall's multiple lounges, but that memory watching movies with my friends will stick in my head for a long time because I felt so happy. So, what I'm getting from this is that I could benefit from a bigger monitor or a TV for watching movies/ entertainment. Then, my final story is from when I was more invested in my monitor search. If I recall correctly, I may have posted another topic about monitors, and folks really recommended me LG's selection of gaming monitors. I forget which of these they specifically recommended, though the attainable ones are mostly in either 34" widescreen or 27" versions, and were 1440p, 144 Hz. More recently though, I was intrigued by this Dell monitor (https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-34-curved-monitor-s3422dw/apd/210-axns/monitors-monitor-accessories same one from before) considering that it was 100 Hz - still high refresh rate - was 34" widescreen, and QHD. The only problem I seem to notice with this monitor is that it's a VA panel, and compared to IPS panels, I know that VA's will give worse viewing angles, though I've also heard that they have better contrast ratios (i.e., better blacks/ colors). So, my concern with this is (a), is this Dell monitor a good option and (b), what type of panel technology would suit me best (VA, IPS, OLED, etc.). So, knowing my concerns/ needs - needs to be 1440p/ QHD, if I should have a big display (i.e., is it necessary to have a big TV, though I'd still like to have something bigger than a typical 27" monitor, however I'm not sure if 27" might actually be a good fit for me), what kind of panel technology I should look for, my gaming concerns (i.e., come from pretty average-quality, casual, single-player AAA gaming and would like an upgrade both in frame rates and image quality - both in color and increase pixel count/ density), and my "social" concerns (if I want to have friends over to watch movies - again, TV's are provided in the Residence Halls' lounges, including private rooms) - I'd like to hear your folks opinions/ insight, especially from those who are currently in college - preferably sophomore/ juniors/ seniors - who just got out of college, of who've just been to college in general. One more thing I'd like to mention, I don't really have a budget right now, though I think I'd be fine spending $800+ on a monitor/ TV, though please include anything above this budget that seems reasonable, and also consider if I can get something similar on the used market to save a buck or two. If any of you folks are able to give a thorough opinion/ insight/ consideration, I'd be very, very appreciated because I feel completely lost in the world of monitors.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a laptop for college with a max budget of 2k. I was thinking about just buying the new mac laptop but I know I could get more bang for my buck. I will use the laptop for school work, gaming, and video editing. I don't want it to look 'gamery' with rgb and stuff like that. Any recommendations? Thanks so much.

Hi guys, I am a foreign student in some laboratory in South Korea and I am planning to build a Mini PC to help my research. I am conducting a research in physics using quantum espresso. I understand that building a PC is not really helpful since the real calculation will take a lot of reseources, but for testing a code I need some rig to start. Right now I just bring my own 7th gen intel laptop with me (poor me). Budget (including currency): 2,000,000 KRW Country: South Korea Programs or workloads that it will be used for: Quantum Espresso, Phonons and Superconducting Gaps Calculation Other details : From the information that I got, parallelization is the key to shortens the calculation time. So, I am planning to get an AMD Ryzen 9 either 5900x or 5950x for the processor with minimum 32GB of RAM. But I dont have any knowledge for the rest of it. I dont really care with the monitor, I do have a used one in my studio that i bought for 30,000KRW. I need recommendation about my future build. Thank you rikyoshiro

Hi I'm looking for a decent gaming laptop for university around 1300 usd. I live in Hungary, so sites like Amazon aren't an option I started looking around a couple of days ago and I found a couple of promising laptops, and I wondered if they were a worthy buy 1st one: Asus ROG G15 G513QC-HN001-387,900 HUF(1,266 usd) CPU:Ryzen 7 5800h GPU:RTX 30504gb DISP:15.6" 1080P 144Hz SSD:512gb m.2 RAM:8gb 3200mhz 2nd one : ASUS ROG Strix G513QC-HN009-347,900 HUF (1,135 usd) CPU:Ryzen 7 5600h GPU:RTX 3050 4gb DISP:15.6" 1080P 144Hz SSD:512gb m.2 RAM:8gb 3200mhz 3rd one: ASUS ROG STRIX G17 G713 (G713QE-HX016)-389,900 HUF (1,273 USD) CPU:Ryzen 7 5600h GPU:RTX 3050ti 4gb DISP:17.3" 1080P 144Hz SSD:512gb m.2 RAM:8gb 3200mhz I have a tight budget, every cent matters. The top is 1300USD. Is there a service/website that can provide quick editing for college papers? Something like an editor would do such as: giving feedback and making notations for changes. I have my paper due this week and could use something like this. I know there are services that will write your papers but I am too honest to do that. What I need is a good editor that is quick so I can make a couple of submissions before turning my paper in.

Hi, so I am currently running an HP Specter x360 13 inch, with an intel i7-7500U and 8GB of ram. I am currently and engineering student and the laptop has being doing alright until I started doing a lot more of 3D modeling in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, and that's when I started to run into problems. I have a $2000 budget, also plan on playing some games on the new system such as Squad and racing sims. Any recommendations would be great thanks !

(It doesn't need to be you specifically. If you know someone else, like a family member, who work in this type of field, you could ask them these questions over facebook or something and just copy//paste their answers here. I'm sure it would be interesting to you as well to know a bit more about this stuff) Preface Hi there, as part of a class at college(Mechanical assembly), I need to ask a few questions to someone who currently work in an industrial setting and whose job is to work on/with panel like these; (It doesn't absolutely need to be the jobs I mentioned, as long as your workplace has a similar panel somewhere and it is your job to work on it... A plain Circuit Breaker panel is... not enough, sorry) If there’s any such person here, would it be possible to answer a few questions and ideally post a picture of such panel at your work place with or without yourself/coworker on it? You can send it over DM if you'd prefer it not be public, doesn't need to show the face, back of head is fine. It's also not an absolute requirement for there to be someone in the picture. This little "survey" is not for posting on the internet, it's for the teacher's eyes and to "share with the class" in a few weeks. Honestly I’ve tried LinkedIn, thinking that would be THE place to find people in that field of work... Turns out nobody reads their messages on there and it’s been a few weeks. I don’t have a FB account with my real name to contact random people with either, so... Yeah... Really hoping at least one or two people here work in that field, otherwise I might need to go to Reddit *shivers*. Onto the subject I have a minimum of 5 questions and 1 task I need to ask of you. If you can, the more info the better. The MUST HAVE answers are as seen below and the "optional" one in the spoiler are similar to the must have, but a bit more specifics. As such, I would need to ask the following of you : Your full job title and type of company you work at (related to the field of electromechanics/electricity/etc.) Summary of your work function and of your workplace (at least a couple lines You can look at the Optional question if you're lacking in inspiration in what to write here). (OPTIONAL, Can be obtained on Google if needs be) A picture of your immediate work environment. Like the one I posted above. You can choose to not be present on the pic. If you'd rather it not be public, you can send it over DM. The competences, the type of education and knowledge needed to occupy that job (basically what was demanded of you on the job resume//at the interview and what you've had to do after landing the job) A brief history of your education (related to this field of work, the programs you’ve attended at College/University, if you attended any vocational schools or other courses outside of your program but related to it, etc.) The diploma you’ve received at the end of your education (College, university, vocational studies, etc...) Optional : To anyone who can answer, I thank you. I would be eternally grateful to anyone who takes the time to answer. The more answer the better. (And mods... No, this is not an AMA.)

Hey! I'm looking for a laptop for college(Computer Science), I already have a powerful PC at home and really looking for something for on campus use only(I will be returning home daily). I considered getting a refurbished Surface 3 for around that price but the 8GB non upgradeable ram really put me off it. I also looked at the Asus VivoBook 15 and 14 lineups but came across some pretty terrible reviews I'm mainly interested in 12GB+ of ram, capable CPU and battery life that would last me a typical university day. I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone with user experience with any of the laptops mentioned or any other recommendations will be most welcome as well as I really haven't made up my mind yes. Thanks!

I want to get a gaming laptop for college. I am going to college for a degree in filmmaking and I am a gamer. I made a list that would make up the setup. My goals for this setup are, probability, budget, power. I know the laptop does not have the best screen so I am going to have a $500 editing monitor. I am not buying this ASAP, probably sometime in 2023, but I would like to know if this is a decent setup. My little sister is getting ready to start college and my mom wants to buy her a laptop. So far she has found this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-15-6-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-Carrying-Case-Wireless-Mouse-FHD-Intel-Core-i3-1115G4-Dual-Core-4GB-Memory-128GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-1-0MP-Webcam-HD/996759914 I'm concerned it's going to run slowly and the SSD to fill up quickly. My sister will likely only use it for streaming movies, browsing the internet, and schoolwork. We are working on a budget, so anything that's on the cheaper side and gives a good bang-for-the-buck would be appreciated.

looking for laptop recommendations for going back to school but also gaming capable, around $1000 or less. Starting my first year of college and I want a possibly gaming laptop to use for college. An important thing for me though is looks, I do not want a "gamer" looking laptop. A sleek and thin laptop that is gaming capable would be the best for me, with also decent build quality. I don't really plan on playing triple A games or hard to run games, and I don't expect a beast laptop at around $1000.
