  1. Hi everyone. I have an Asus H81 board I'm using for my home server/NAS that has a strange issue. Often when I power the system off, it won't start again. Power button does nothing. The only recourse seems to be to shut off the PSU and wait at least a few hours (I usually just leave it overnight) then I can power it back on. Sometimes when it powers off this doesn't happen, and it turns right back on. Seems random. I think it might be a CMOS battery related issue, because when it does start again after the PSU has been off, the BIOS has been fully reset. But I replaced the battery and that didn't change anything. Anyone know what this issue is, or if it's fixable? Thanks!
  2. A while back I bought an old Acer Extensa 355. It is practically new and works fine, but it has a bad cmos battery. Since I have no experience digging around in 20 year old laptops and there is very little documentation online, I wondered if any of you could help me? I can make a guess as to what the cmos battery is, but I'd rather not brick the machine by doing something stupid. Any help is appreciated
  3. My pc bios setting are not saved!!!! My clock is fine!!! I changed the cmos battery!!! but still same problem!!! though my pc is running welll!!
  4. Okay so, I have tried everything I can think of. But the memory I have in slots a_1 a_2 will light up but won’t detect in the bios. I switched around all 4 sticks. I cleared the cmos. I pulled the cmos battery out and let it sit for 10 min. I just left two sticks in the aforementioned slots and got a memory (yellow light) error. I don’t know what else to try or do. Let me know if you can think of anything. My pc specs are broken down in my profile. If you need more info please ask. It will boot into windows but only in single channel with, (half of 32gb), 16gb.
  5. Hello all, I have been having an issue with my PC. It is my second build. I have safely overclocked the RAM on the motherboard to 3200MHz with the standard XMP setting. (1.35v) It starts fine, however I have found if I leave my PSU switched on for extended time, (overnight) my BIOS fully resets, including my RAM to the stock 2133MHz. My PSU is a 550w and my estiamted wattage on PCPartPicker is 374w. My CPU and GPU I have completely 'un-overclocked' to see if that was the issue and even changed the RAM OC to 3000MHz but to no avail. I realize it may not be the best practice to leave the PSU switched on overnight, but I don't think the BIOS should be reset if I do? OS: Windows 10 CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 Motherboard: ASRock B450 PRO4 RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16 GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming OC 8G Case: Thermaltake Versa H17 Micro ATX Mini Tower Storage: Intel SSD 660p Series 1TB PSU: Rosewill ARC-550 550W Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo BIOS is 3.90, the latest version. Thank you!
  6. hey Guys i Got Mobo B450 Aorus Elite Ryzen 5 3600 RTX 2060 Corsaire 16GB 3200Mhz Pws 750W CoolerMaster i Tried to OverClock my CPU and i have done a mistake i want to reset the Bios i tried the Pins and the Battery method and it wont work AnyOther Sollution Pls i Wanna Help ASAP
  7. Hey Guys, so I built a new Rig for a friend of mine with the following components. Ryzen 5 3600 RTX2060 Super MSI B450-A Pro Max BeQuiet System Power 500W Ballistix 16GB 3200 When you plug the PC into the wall and flip the switch on the power supply, the Fans of the GPU, CPU und Case turn on immediately to 100% and the EZ Debug CPU LED on the mainboard lights up. But the PC doesn’t boot, no image etc. just the fans. After pressing the power button on the case everything works fine and the PC boots into Windows. The BIOS detects all the components correctly! When shutting it down through Windows, the fans start so ramp up again and the screen is out. I did a CMOS reset, updated the BIOS and reassembled the CPU, GPU and RAM and nothing works. Maybe it is a hardware defect but I dont know which component it is. Maybe you can help me. Thanks! Cheers, Moritz
  8. I just recently upgraded my set up. I got an i3 9100f since it is a great value and highly rated, and to match that, a Z170A Gaming pro carbon because it also has lga 1151. I also had to upgrade ram to be ddr4 for the new motherboard so I got 8gbOLOy Dimm ddr4 3000 MHz, not brand name, but I believe it had decent reviews on amazon and I am pretty sure it is properly installed in slot 2. Any how, the indicator light says that there is an issue reading CPU. I zip tied my fan to it, since there are motherboard capacitors in the way of the bracket for the fan. I am almost out of zipties so I'd prefer this be resolved without dismounting my fan, if possible. I also upgraded my case and added a couple drives, but I doubt they are involved. Anyhow, I boot it up and all of my rgb turns on and the fans start, so it runs, but it must be failing POST because the monitor does absolutely nothing. I haven't cleared CMOS yet and if you think it is a very possible fix, I will do so gladly, but there is stuff in the way right now. Also, I have a 500w PSU. EDIT: I have decided I want to update the processor unless you can find a relatively cheap motherboard with a built in usb c slot like this one and four ddr4 slots that can at least kind of support 3000 MHz. I live in the USA
  9. Hi, i have a little issue: as the tittle says, my bios, sometimes, when i turn off the computer, resets itself (except for the profiles). I tried another battery (in fact 2) but it randomly happens. Can it be when i clean up the PC? Is it recommended to clean it with a normal brush or maybe is that the cause? I have an portable air compressor, like a suitcase, i think that's safe. What do you guys think? Can it be the PC case? It's an old TT Versa h34. Thanks in advance!
  10. Downloaded MSI Dragon Centre to double check my BIOS firmware was up to date, proceeded to download all all the realtek, bluetooth etc firmware updates, then also clicked on the MS-7C37 update, took several minutes, then black screen, no ability to turn off computer, had to actually switch power button off psu just so I could get in there and reset cmos battery. Also noticed cpu failure led, which is funny because I put the system together 4 days ago and it wasn't doa. Now im sketched out. Anyone else have any of these troubles. My advice, download directly from MSi downloads, not through this program.
  11. My friend just built a new computer. Her mobo is an ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming and each time she reboots, her BIOS settings reset to factory defaults. Changes such as DRAM frequency, Aura lighting changes, onboard CPU overclocks are resetting to their default values. Is this something a CMOS battery replacement could solve or would it require an RMA? We'd prefer to do the prior to avoid tearing apart her newly built PC. Any other ideas and suggestions are most welcome. Here is a list of her parts if it helps. CPU: i7-9700k RAM: 16GB (8x2) 3200MHz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro GPU: MSI 1660Ti (not sure what model though I doubt it makes a diff) Storage and Boot Drive: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB PSU: Corsair CX750M
  12. Hello all, I am working on a tower for my uncle, it seems that there was a issue with the display being that it had none. No display from the Graphics card (GTX 750 TI). After cleaning the inside of the case so there wasn't so much dust in it I began to attempt problem solving the issue. I was able to find the manual for the motherboard online at ASUS. I promptly unplugged the power supply from the motherboard and all cards in the computer, as well as the HDD and optical drive. I removed all cards from the PCI slots, and disconnected all plugs from the case that connect to the motherboard. I then removed the motherboard from the case after making sure my ESD protector was connected properly. After which I removed the ram and cleaned the pins as per instructions. I cleaned out the rest of the case. I checked the power supply with a 24 pin power supply tester, everything had the appropriate values. At this point I connected the power supply to the motherboard and reconnected the power button from the case to the motherboard. I put one stick of ram (240 pin 2 GB DDR3) back in and connected a monitor to the motherboard directly with a VGA cable, I connected the HDD to the motherboard following this. I turned on the power supply and the motherboard came back with a green light. I pressed the power button, the fan for the heat sink turned on and the HDD made its usual sounds. Though I still had no video, so I turned the computer off. I then tried changing the Bios battery to a fresh one and turned the computer back on, still no video output. My next step was to reset the CMOS, this fixed the video issue and the screen started to display. This is where I'm stuck though. When the monitor turned on it was displaying Going back to the ASUS website I found the BIOS and downloaded it. I put the BIOS ROM onto a fresh toshiba 32gb USB drive that was formatted to FAT32 and connected it to the computer. When the computer loaded up back to the Boot Lock screen it recognized that there was a USB drive connected and attempted to read the file which was named "CG5270.ROM". The BIOS Recovery program was unable to find the file on the USB though it was named correctly. After this I burned the file to a CD and then attempted to recover in that mannor but the computer also didn't recognize that the file was on the CD. So my question is, am I doing something wrong with the file when I put it on the USB or burn it to a CD? I have tried putting in a different piece of RAM which I know works, I changed the power supply though I know it works to another that I also know works, I changed the CPU to a known working one. I'm not sure what else to do.
  13. Long story short, in hopes of reaching higher frequency, I set the ram timings to max and then thought of decreasing them step by step to get the lowest timings and highest frequency. Now pc won't boot up, even after removing and reinserting cmos battery. The fans spin at max speed and pc doesn't 'bootloop' like it used to after a failed oc attempt. One thing I observed that when i press the power button just after reinserting the battery, led's in fans get dimmer for a second then become bright again, otherwise they remain brightest throughout. Pls help me out and thanks.
  14. Hi, So i apologise if this is in the wrong section as its both a motherboard and storage issue but i have two drives running in RAID 0 that only show up if i reset the CMOS before boot. i Have an SSD and another HDD that show up just fine with a restart, but the other two drives will disappear from the bios disk manager etc after a restart. Does anyone know what might be causing this, i dont want to have to short the pins before every boot. ROG STRIX B450-F is my motherboard if that helps
  15. Hello, I recently got myself a new gaming computer but there is this weird CMOS Issue. My rig: - Gigabyte B450m DS3H (Running BIOS ver F41) - Ryzen 5 3600 (Running at stock, I just have ryzen master installed) - Asus TUF 1660 Gaming OC - G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x8 (Running XMP at 2933Mhz, Stable) - Windows 10 Pro (ver 1903) - 1TB Seagate Barracuda + 480GB Kingston A400 The computer works completely fine and everything is stable, I'm getting the performance I'm supposed to get from such a system comparing it to benchmarks. The weird Issue is that whenever I turn on the PC after a long time; like when I go to sleep; all the fans spin but nothing posts, there's no output. I have to take out my GPU, take out the CMOS Battery and then put it back in after a minute for the computer to post again. Once the PC is back on, everything works fine and I just have to turn XMP back on. I tried using another CMOS Battery (I'm not sure if this ones good either) but the same issue persists. Any help regarding this would be appreciated. I got this gaming PC after years of waiting and it's just really sad to see such an issue with a new motherboard. Thank you.
  16. This is absolutely frustrating. My asrock motherboard seemingly broke after I completed the build. Before I had done that though, I have tested it outside the case for a good half hour with no issues. In that time I have updated the bios, and even run a few games. All of the components were fine. Now as I boot up the pc, it freezes on the bios splash screen. After clearing the cmos it freezes on the " uefi deafaults have been loaded" screen. The keyboard is unresponsive, even though it does get power, but only until it is unplugged from the usb slot. After it is unplugged it doesn't get power anymore. I don't know what to do. I find it unlikely that the case shorted out the motherboard as all the standoffs came preinstalled and I took special care not to scratch or bump any smd components on the underside. How can I even diagnose this? What do?

  18. I reset the CMOS via jump pins on Z68XP-UD3 motherboard in an attempt to fix the system not picking up total installed RAM (8GB total, system bios stating only 4GB total installed). After performing the CMOS jump, the system failed to post and is continually stopping and starting. Specs: motherboard - Z63XP-UD3 RAM - Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 GPU - Nvidia 710 GT CPU - Intel i5 OS - Windows 10 home, 1903 build 18362.267
  19. I have a custom built PC that has been booting normally for a long time after its completion, but suddenly after I turn it on, I am prompted to the bios, as it refuses to boot into windows. Just to be clear, all of my components are displaying as they should, including my m.2 where windows is installed on. I attempted the usual enable/disable secure boot and csm thingamajig with no success. I then cleared the cmos by taking the battery out and using a screw driver to connect both jumper pins, no success. I then resorted to installing a new copy of Windows on the same drive as the other, possibly corrupted, Windows, which didn't work, as whenever the installation process was finished and the "Your PC will restart in 10, 9..." message appears, it restarts, and I'm back at the "Choose your language" purple background part. In other words, an endless installation loop. Specs: TUF Z370-Plus i5 8600k 16gb ddr4 Viper ra RX 580 (Although I removed it for battery access) If you have any more questions about specs, I will answer. Thank you,
  20. I need help and I'm not bad with computers but this has me stumped. Problem: I have an ASRock G41M-VS3 and it was working two days ago but the one RAM slot was giving me problems and I had another identical board lying around so I rebuilt the system into the other board (board 2) but it wouldn't post so I built the system back into board 1 and it also wouldn't post but after clearing the CMOS it would boot to a error screen saying that the CMOS settings are wrong and resetting to default settings by pressing F1 made the system not post but clearing the CMOS gets me the error message. If I clear the CMOS and go to the BIOS and change anything (it literally does not matter what I change) then save and exit it does not post. What I have tried: I replaced the battery. Updated the BIOS. Cleared CMOS multiple times. Tried different Graphics Cards (on-board does not work). Swapped out ram. Tried a bare bones boot but no post codes. Well just no post codes period except when I clear the CMOS and get the error screen. I also then tried with an older board (Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C) that still worked two months ago when I used it last but that also did not post. I don't think its the RAM or CPU as I should get post codes with that but I don't and PSU looks fine. Any advise would be appreciated. 21. Hello to whomever is out there, I call upon the elements of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart and The Force to please kindly assist me. I recently acquired my aunt's old pc and thought 'Oh, I could use this for old steam games'. I have checked everywhere and I cannot see a fix hence I have made my first forum post ever. This Linus thread (linked below) was most helpful however it did not fix my issue as the person in the thread used a Xeon in a motherboard that did not support it. I have never done anything as detailed as this so please be patient and explain more than you usually would. Essentially, two major issues: 1) The Hard drive is stuck on Windows Error Recovery (the issue is that the Keyboards I have tried do not register at all, hence it is continuously stuck in a "Start Windows Normally" loop where it boots up to the load screen and restarts and continues). 2) Keyboards are not being accepted for bios/post so I cannot 'fix' the hard drive by choosing another Windows Error Recovery Option. PC: CPU: Q9300 Core 2 Quad 2.5Ghz (LGA775 Socket / Yorkfield) GPU: None yet, was a 500 series NVIDIA (She took it back! The best piece! So found a cheap GTX460 online which hasn't arrived yet-not in case). Motherboard does have a VGA connector. RAM: 2 x 2Gb DDR2 800Mhz Motherboard: Intel DQ35JO https://ark.intel.com/products/50382/Intel-Desktop-Board-DQ35JO Please note this PC only has USB Ports no old keyboard port. OS: Windows 7 (SP X? I cannot get it past the logo). What I have done so far: 1) Disconnected the HDD and moved the Jumper thing on the motherboard. 2) Did the Recovery BIOS Update Instructions for Intel® Desktop Boards with correct version via USB https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19638/BIOS-Update-JOQ3510J-86A-?product=50382 The BIOS recovery worked/said was done and I replaced the Jumper thing 3) My USB keyboards still do not work at all, I cannot get into the BIOS to see if USB keyboards are enabled. I have tried every port on the back and the front (turning off and on after each try) and NADA. So now I'm here... Side errors: 1) The firmware has detetected that a CMOS battery failure occurred 2) The firmware has detetected that a CMOS Checksum Error occurred 3) The firmware has detetected that the system date/time has not been set I am also open to other options such as using an enclosure for the HDD to fix windows (can this be done?), or something else... 22. Without just saying "It's a new, better version of BIOS". They want to know what's actually different about how it works and what is "better" about it.
  23. Hello interwebs, Listen a Friend bought a "dead" Alienware M17X R3 for 100$ Core i7 2620QM 16gb DDR3 (4x4) 128gb ssd 500gb hdd, GTX 460M 1.5gb , that the seller stated that it was dead as it didnt want to power on and all it did was Beep 5 times, well, he bought it and send it to me, after googling a while i found out that those beeps were related to a dead CMOS Battery wich was changed and the laptop booted no problem 5 months after, my Friend bought a GTX 770m (wich is indeed supported and sold as an upgrade kit on official stores like Eurocom) but right before the card arrived the laptop began with thoose 5 beeps again, we tried the new card and its the same did ALL the mandatory trouble shooting ETC, even tried brand new CR20 batteries, but still the computer does those 5 Beeps, OR, just Boots into the bios with no image at all not even to an external monitor (and it does with both gpus and igpu) so.. we also tried a different cpu ram hdds etc, any insight?
  24. So, I had to perform a cmos reset by removing the battery, and now it has a boot artifact, always with the wame pattern. Also, fans sound like they're kinda fast. It doesn't go past that. I dont know what to do
  25. Hi smart people on the net. So, I have an issue with an older laptop. I am building a basic media center for my home using an older laptop mobo (Toshiba L50-a0383) I have the motherboard, RAM, HDD, CPU, Cooler, Battery, and screen. When I try to boot the system it displays Low RTC Battery - Press F2 to change Date and Time. I have no Keyboard connected to the inner port, so I cannot press F2. There is nothing that I can do and it seems that I have no input methods, other than a small button which instantly kills the power, and the on/off switch. What I have tried: - Removing the Battery and the CMOS and boot up the system (nothing) - Removing the hard drive and inserting a bootable USB in all the ports (nothing) - Connected to a network via network cable (nothing picked up) - Hold down the reset button 10+ seconds (nothing) - Hold down the on/off button 10+ seconds (nothing) - Hold down both buttons (nothing) - Replaced CMOS battery with brand new battery (nothing) - Plugged in a Microsoft std Keyboard (seems like it didn't even get power) - Plugged wireless Keyboard (no signal) tl;dr So my question is; how can I reset this Mobo to reconfigure the time/date settings or BIOS without the use of a keyboard.. Any suggestions welcome!
