Summary Already in the past, Plex GmbH has made some unpopular decisions in the further development of its self-hosting media library and streaming service. (As already shown in some videos on the LTT Youtube channel). Now they seem to want to crack down on piracy and the distribution of it through their products with little regard for long-time legal users. Over the past few hours, Plex users running their server on a VPS or dedicated server at Hetzner have received an email stating that Plex will completely block access to these servers hosted at Hetzner as of October 12 in accordance with your terms of service. In the official Plex forums, the incomprehension of the users towards this decision is already apparent a short time later. to completely block one of the largest cosumer hosting providers. Especially users from countries like Germany, where upload rates for their private Internet connection are around 30 MBit/s according to Statista (https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/416534/umfrage/durchschnittliche-internetgeschwindigkeit-in-deutschland/), operating with a cloud provider is often the best solution for watching high-resolution movies on the road or with the family. Many posts from users also question whether this step is actually able to stop criminals from sharing copied movies, as they are likely to have switched to another cloud provider within a few hours. Also the statements and explanations of the Plex employees do not make the users feel comfortable, because they seem very dismissive and little explanatory. My thoughts Making piracy and its distribution more difficult is an important step that even product manufacturers like Plex need to address. However, I doubt that this is the right approach. Many users who either don't have a fast enough internet connection or don't have the hardware at home to follow the Plex staff's recommendation and run the Plex server at home will have to look for alternatives like Jelly to continue enjoying their media library. This approach will probably only cost Plex more users and will have no real effect in the area of piracy. There is also the question of whether users of other hosting providers will face similar problems in the future if it is now the official company policy to block hosting providers. Hi, I've been using Google Authenticator for a number of years now for most TOTP 2FA codes (Also have Microsoft's authenticator for some work-related things that require that specific app). I'm also a sysadmin and today I was helping a user with some authentication issues. He's using Google Auth on the iPhone... and it began forcing him to set up cloud storage account on the phone. There's a chance he fumbled something, although I was watching and didn't see that, so I'm wondering if some versions of the app are now forcing people to store their TOTP seeds in Google's cloud? The app was updated very recently (the icon changed), but I can still see on my phone that it is not storing in the cloud (cloud with a slash through it in the upper right corner). (I strongly prefer local storage of TOTP seeds, in case that isn't obvious.) Has anyone else experienced being forced by Google Authenticator to use cloud storage? Or was this a random user error? (Or is their app using dark patterns?)

https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/27/23775117/microsoft-windows-11-cloud-consumer-strategy I know people often say "this might be the push to Linux" and then never do, but this might actually be it for me. I cannot be happy using a system like this which exists on a cloud somewhere. There are so many implications to this and most of them are really bad.

Hi There, I have near unlimited amount of cloud storage (dropbox and/or onedrive) and a ton of data. I cannot store all the data on my computer to I need to up- and download it from the cloud which takes days. So I want to build a system, which can hold some amount as a sort of Cache. My idea is to use TrueNAS and back everything up from there to the cloud. Then I would like a page where I can select the folders that should remain on the NAS. This will create sync jobs which will run during the night. Do you know such kind of systems?

TL: DR I have a 350GB media archive (.7z file) in my google drive that when I try to download (using Edge) reaches ~30-50GB before saying its a network error and wont restart the download. The average speed was around 10+mbps Ive pinned the tab in Edge so that it doesn't get snoozed, I've turned off efficiency settings and yet iv already restarted the download for the 3rd time I need to get it downloaded back on my system within 48 Hours before my 2TB Drive Free Trial expires. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I bought HyperX Cloud Alpha (without S) three days ago because it was a discount from Black Friday. My question is: Should I return them and buy HyperX Cloud Alpha S? The quality of HyperX Cloud Alpha is extremely good and I love this headset. But I would like 7.1 and louder bass . But I have some reservations about HyperX Cloud Alpha S because many people complain about 7.1 that it is of poor quality. I use headsets more for music but also for occasional gaming

Hey guys, I recently started looking into nextcloud a little and would really like to set up my own cloud with it at home using true Nas and nextcloud. The plan for the server would be to mostly use it for Data storage, a synchronized Calendar and keeping notes on it. Apps like nextcloud talk would be pretty cool to have though and who knows what more - since there are a lot of pretty cool looking apps available for nextcloud. I was wondering what kind of hardware I would need to be able to have solid performance with like 5 to 10 users. Like how much Ram would be sufficient, what kind of cpu is needed etc - can a Raspberry deliver sufficient performance for so few users? Thanks for the help in advance Cheers Chris

Hi there, I was curious about building a cheapest NAS or cloud server for only sharing or storing files over my Wi-fi network. Is it possible? I am not talking about Rassberry pi 4 rather than more cheaper module like Rassberry Pi Zero W, I want to know is there a more cheaper way? It would be better if it is possible to attach External Hard Drive or any USB storage. Just fun to ask.

Hey everyone, Looking at the current improvement in the phone camera space and the increase in the phone photography, I do believe it is high time right now for people to have a NAS setup at home as keeping all the memories in just google or apple cloud services can be too costly as well as bit risky (at least as I feel it). But also for most people me alike backing up things from phone at regular interval is a task which might be too tidious to endure in the process. As a newbie to all the feild of networking and server architechture, Post insights and tools to start of with personal backup servers and setup.

I'm planning to create a home storage server, so i can use Nextcloud to send and receive files away from home. I'm not sure exactly what hardware I'd need, apart from storage drives of course, so any help at all is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Duccy.

So I've recently got interested in NAS and the concept of having your own storage like a cloud, I am looking for something that does not break the bank, my use case is mostly storing photos and videos and I want them to be accessible anywhere in the world through the internet, I have looked at options such as Synology but these are too expensive for my use-case and I do have a old PC already, what would be the best options for this use-case and where can I find detailed guides for the process.

Ello mates, I've had unraid for about a year now, I feel like I got the basics down, I've been using it for SMB storage and got a app call droppy to access it externally with web UI. I'm in the need of a application that allows me to access it internally with Windows but able to access it externally on phones, tablets, ECT. But has customized directories for individual users. And would like a recycle bin too. Any suggestions or beginger tips welcome ~Pax

I know what DNS is. It's a server with a database that indexes all the websites' domains and their IP addresses. Typically these are owned by ISPs, and there are public DNS's offered by Google, Cloudflare etc (I have a question about these too). Services like YouTube, are hosted by multiple datacenters around the globe and the contents (in this case, videos) are delivered through what are called Content Delivery Networks. This network is basically a network of data centers placed strategically around the globe to serve the users. The definition I made above of the DNS server, only makes sense if there's only one server for a website. How do the DNS servers know, that it should return the IP address from Mumbai and not the one in Dublin? I witnessed my professor changing the nameserver IP address of our college website from our registrar account. Is there an ability to add multiple nameservers, for multiple data centers? Does the DNS point to the geographically nearest IP address? And also, how does the same thing work for DNS servers? If I want to use, CloudFlare DNS, I have to update my DNS server to 1.1.1.1. (Is there a registrar available to reserve fancy looking IP addresses as well?) I'm from India, and my dns requests are routed through cloudflare's data centers in Mumbai (according to this). And I've seen some instances when it was routed through Singapore. You just give a static IP, how in the hell is that routed dynamically around the globe?

Summary 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 64GB storage -- costs $20/£17 per user per month 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 64GB storage -- costs $32/£28 per user per month 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 128GB storage -- costs $70/£60 per user per month 8 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 512GB storage -- costs $158/£138 per user per month (but maybe only for businesses?) There are other options, see the full list Quotes My thoughts Compare Microsoft's pricing to AWS pricing here. This seems like a pretty fair comparison. It looks like Microsoft is subsidizing the lowest-spec entry level offerings to edge out Amazon. And Amazon's disk options over 100GB for the "user volume" cost $0.10/GB. Amazon does have some interesting Graphics and GraphicsPro options: 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM: Microsoft's 64GB disk is $20/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $25/month 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, Microsoft's 64GB disk is $32/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $33/month 4 vCPU, 16GB RAM, Microsoft's 128GB disk is $70/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $70/month 8 vCPU, 32GB RAM, Microsoft's 512GB disk is $158/month vs. Amazon's 175GB+100GB disk is $140/month, note that to get a full 512GB user volume on Amazon would be $140+$41.2 = $181.20/month! Hello together, Brief history Since early November 2020, my Microsoft account (OneDrive, license keys, OneNote, etc.) has been suspended for no specific reason. I do not feel bad and MS does not help me. I have already contacted support 19 times (via phone (1€ per call) and chat). There they said each time that there is only one department that can unlock my account again - the compliance team. The support department itself has no possibility to view or change the account. To contact the Compliance Team, there is exactly one (!) form. I have filled out this form several times. Here I only got the answer that my account is no longer available; however, this is not possible, since I still have an active Office license (shared, I do not have access) until the end of May and my e-mail is still assigned. I even wrote to the data protection officer of MS and requested my data. Here I also only got the answer that this is not possible (but here in Germany the DSGVO is valid...). Otherwise, I have called the very unfriendly headquarters of MS Germany several times. Microsoft actively prevents other communication channels. Question #1 Are there already similar cases here? How would you approach the issue? Are there any users here who work at MS who could tell me more? Question #2 As a follow-up, I looked up how the various tech giants with online storage respond to lockouts: I found hardly any case where the company responded (Apple seems fine, but is not an option for me). Even for Google Drive, they say they won't help in such a case. My idea: free and redundant storage is not possible anywhere. So I want to continue to have my data with the big tech giants. The idea: I basically want to have my own Nextcloud instance. However, the data should not be on my server, but directly and encrypted on OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. Perhaps this can still be described as a special RAID configuration - just not with hard drives, but with cloud providers. Is there (self-hosted at best) a provider that can do just that? Thanks already for the help OneZeroByte

So last night I decided to give into my lust and wanted to play Cyperpunk with decent quality. And since Nvidia can't fix it's 3080 stock problems I thought I'd give Geforce Now a shot... I mean after all, I got a gigabit connection. What cpuld go wrong?Right?? It even "claims" you only need 50mbps download speeds for 1080p 60fos gaming on high settings. Well let me tell you they are full of crap. I passed every speed test, and had only 10ms ping from the midwest server. (Recommended is below 40ms) Still nothing but Lag and stuttering.... Yellow bars constantly. I even calped my ISP and had them send a guy out to check things because they value their customers unlike Mr.Jensen... They found nothing wrong and I believe them because steam practically insta-downloads my games. So it's on Nvidias end from what I can tell. I also have a paid founders membership as well in case anyone asks. I figured I'd write this to vent my frustration and to give other people a heads up. Sorry for the bad Grammar. Oh and my speeds are 1000 down 300 up in case anyone asks.

Hi, I am currently building a new PC from almost scratch. The only thing that bothers me right now are transfering all of my data to my new computer. Since I don't know much about hard drives and backups, here is what I have and what I am thinking about doing right now (the storage of my old PC is like 10 years old for info) : - Two HDD of 250Gb each that form my local disk (C:) (287Gb/500Gb) - Two SSD of 120Gb each that form my other local disk (D:) (114Gb/240Gb) - The new stoarge is a 1Tb SSD (samsung 870 QVO) I tried cloning the HDD to the new SSD using Macrium Reflect but there was an error with a Temp file named vss.log. Right now I have bought 1Tb storage on Microsoft Onedrive for 8$ and I think it is a good option for a backup. I just need to know how I should back them up online like how to organize the data to fit my new hard drive since I don't how hard drive works. There is also folders that have the same name in each Local Disk so I am not sure what to do about those when backing up. Should I just merged (C:) and (D:) together to have only one backup folder? I provided pictures of what is in both of my storage if you could help me organize them to make one good backup to put in my new stoarge. Thanks!

Hello All, Apologies if this is in the wrong place or posted incorrectly (I don't think I've posted on a forum since 2008!) About a month ago my 2 year old daughter passed away from a terminal condition. Knowing early on she wouldn't be with us for very long my wife and I decided to take as many photos and videos as humanly possible resulting in over 17,000 files. Currently they are on a raid 1 home server (mechanical drives) with a SSD at my parents as a backup. I am hyper paranoid that I will lose these photos. I know all drives will fail at some point. I'm 34, if I make it to 94 that's 60 years I need to make sure these photos survive! It may be grief or just general anxiety but it keeps me up at night. Any suggestions or help on how to make sure they will never be lost would be hugely appreciated. Many many thanks Dave
