  1. Guys i just have 3 question about Synology NAS. How's the security? Is it suitable for sme? Can i use it as a cloud? i mean can i access it outside of my office? If it's possible, should I use synology NAS, or is it better to use cloud services like OneDrive?"
  2. I am considering UnRaid and XPEonology(the open source DSM of synology OS). TO BE CLEAR: I AM NOT ASKING HOW TO USE THIS SOFTWARE. Just asking if anyone else has and would recommend it. I just purchased all of my components and am going to build my first home NAS. I am using an old HP case and board with an i5 processor and 8 GB of Ram. I purchased three 4TB IronWolf HDDs and plan on booting off of a flash drive. Our house is all Apple(not my choice but I also don't mind) and we are currently using way too much iCloud storage. I have seen a lot of great info on UnRaid but very little about how to use it as cloud storage. My wife and I often need access to files while not at home. I really like the Synology OS but couldn't pay $650 for just the case. It looks very easy to integrate and use but the boxes are too expensive. If anyone has similar alternatives, I would be open to other options. I also like the upgradeability of the UnRaid system where you could add more drives because it's an Array, not a RAID. I plan on using 8TB and the third drive will be a parity, either for RAID 5 or for unRAID array. I will not be using this for gaming, it is simply for NAS and Offsite access. The one thing I may need a VM for would be to download all of our data that is currently on iCloud. We don't have enough storage on any of our local boot drives to download all of the files so we can't really download any of it without frustration. We can use individual files but if we want to move any of them off the cloud to free up cloud space, it leaves me ripping my hair out. So I would use a VM to download iCloud for Windows and download all of the iCloud data and then delete things from iCloud that don't need to be there anymore. Then I would probably remove the VM from the server after I am done with it. I will not be using it for games or entertainment media. I don't really want to use FreeNas because I don't want this to be a headache later on. My experience with things that are free is that they work great as long as you are willing to tinker with it occasionally and keep things up to date and watch the forums. I don't want to have to mess with this once it's up. I want to set it up and just be able to use it when we need it for the things we need. So needs are: 3 drive array with 1 as parity Usable as cloud storage(info on using unRaid for this would be appreciated) VM to download iCloud Data would be ideal Easy to maintain Easy to access from Mac and iDevices
  3. Hi everyone, new member here. I need some suggestions on a cloud storage solutions to backup our personal files. Want your suggestions, it's for my parents so it has to be very easy to use & with reasonable pricing. We have maybe 10GB worth of documents & paperwork scans & 100 GB+ of photos & videos. What would you suggest?
  4. What makes Linus think DropBox can't view your files? DropBox has full access to the files you upload; it is NOT zero knowledge. All it takes is for them to make one dumb mistake and all of your private (not illegal) files are open to the public, like what happened in 2011.
  5. Hi, Since google is ending the free google photo storage, I need to start migrating my collection of photographs to other online backup solutions. I currently have 1TB Office365 subscription which I also use it to backup photos taken on my phone. But as work requires more space, I may need to relocate my entire photo collection. I am thinking of making my own backup data storage from my home so that I don't need to deal with subscription services. Is this a good idea? Things I currently have: I have unlimited upload/download fiber optic internet in my house. 100mbps download/50 mpbs upload. A Netgear R7000 router connected to a TP-Link Deco E4 mesh wifi. The wifi on the netgear has been disabled. Wired connection is still used. 2 free ethernet ports. The mesh wifi has 2 ethernet ports as well. A unused intel NUC PC. I'm guessing its this model. What are my options? I would like seamless photo/video backup like I get with Microsoft and google.
  6. I'm having an issue with OneDrive where it's telling me I'm out of storage space and need to pay for more storage, but won't let me delete or stop syncing the files that are eating said storage space. Apparently, most Battlefield games store save data and some game data in the user's Documents folder in Windows. Battlefield 2042, for some reason, saves shader files there too. The "Battlefield 2042" folder in Documents is almost a gig of DX12 shader data. Buried in OneDrive settings, there's a GUI to uncheck specific folders from syncing. However, if you try to uncheck a folder that has pending uploads, you get an error telling you to try again after the uploads have completed. This is, of course, impossible if the drive is full and is not accepting new uploads. I went into OneDrive and deleted the Battlefield 2042 folder from my drive, which put me well under the storage limit... at which point OneDrive immediately began backing up the folder again because there was free space and the pending uploads resumed. If you pause the upload, it prevents you from unchecking the folder again, or from uploading any other files you actually want to back up! This has created an infinite loop that I can't find a way out of. My drive is full because of unwanted files, but I can't tell it to stop syncing the unwanted files because the drive is full. So I delete the files, but they come back, because OneDrive wasn't told to stop syncing them, but I can't stop syncing them because the drive is full, and on and on forever. Has anyone encountered a similar issue with OneDrive? Have you found a solution other than paying for additional storage or deleting files you actually want?
  7. Hi, I'm new to LTT and I'm here because I don't really know what I'm exactly looking for but I'm in a bit of a problem with my storage. You see, I play many games and record many clips because I like to practice video editing on my clips. So here's the problem: My storage is running out and it's not something that I can solve just by installing another drive. At first I thought cloud storage services are pretty neat, I could use that but I'm from a country where 10 usd/month sounds great but isn't exactly "cheap". I have a spare pc that I can install many drives in, what I want is for my videos to be transferred/uploaded to the pc via lan cable (also idk if it's possible to do this if my rig and server is connected to a router instead of being connected directly to each other via lan) and I can basically "share" the link of file/video or somehow give access to anyone so they can download it to their own computer. (like how you share gdrive/mega files). So.. what do I want? I'm really new to this, and I probably won't understand many terms.
  8. Source: CNET All I can say as a Google Drive user, it's about time. Though it means it's time to pay for extra Google Drive storage though for me personally, their pricing isn't that expensive at leat in my area (prices vary depending on the country). US pricing is below. The iOS and Android apps are still available though. I use Google Drive because of Google Photos and it has some sort of AI to identify pictures via tags. So if I typed "clothes" in the search box, it will show me pictures with clothes in it unlike the abysmal search functions in One Drive. Another reason why I use Google Drive is because of Google Docs and slowly at the moment, I'm trying to breakup my ties with Office 365. I think the only thing that keeps Office relevant is compatibility with the rest of Office users.
  9. Hi, I've been working towards setting up a new storage server replacing the one I'm running now. I currently have it just running Windows 7 with 2 x 3TB WD Red drives in RAID 1 (within Windows). Most of my other servers are running Debian or other Linux-distros, but I set up this server with Windows due to my current cloud backup provider, Backblaze, only working in Windows and OS X. I am running a NextCloud server on a seperate Debian-VM connecting to the storage-server via a Samba-Share. I now want to set up my new server with the storage and NextCloud on the same machine, and preferably running backup against a cloud-provider. I have been planning to move to Crashplan, as they seem to have the right service, but as they just announced their discontinuation of their Home-tier, I'm not sure about that anymore. As you might guess from my Crashplan consideration, I want to move away from Windows. I have been looking into both FreeNAS and unRAID, but as FreeNAS seem to have higher hardware requirements, and are harder to operate, and I also don't know if I can run NextCloud from it. unRAID seems to be inviting, but as a lot of people seem to dislike their "btrfs" filesystem, and a lot of comments warning about data rot, I'm not really sure. As far as I know unRAID is the better solution for running extra services in addition to just storage, is this impression correct? Also, is there other option you would recommend? Short summary of what I want to achieve: - Storage server with 2-4 x 3TB drives running with redundancy (RAID 1, 10 or 5) - Running NextCloud - Cloud backup (Crashplan, Backblaze or similar) PS: How are the different solutions when it comes to adding additional drives in the future? PPS: If it's possible I would like to be able to add a Plex-service to the server later, but that's something I could run on my VM-host, so no biggy. Thanks in advance -- Dentsor
  10. I'm honestly not sure if this was mentioned in a separate Microsoft article, however a recent update to Windows has created an error message that will pop up if your storage drive synced with Microsoft's OneDrive is not an NTFS. Apparently a blog post by Microsoft indicates that this was how OneDrive was supposed to operate all along. As for implications, if your drive is setup with the Windows default, it shouldn't be a big issue as that is NTFS, however, if it was something like an expansion disk then it may not be in the NTFS format then it may be incompatible with OneDrive. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/07/onedrive-has-stopped-working-on-non-ntfs-drives/ So I guess this brings forward two questions... First, who is using OneDrive as opposed to something like Google Drive, Apple's Cloud or some other File Sharing Service? Second, is there anyone out there that is using OneDrive that this would affect as you are syncing with non-NTFS drives?
  11. Hi, I've been wanting to build my own system for a couple of years now and never really got down to actually doing it. I never really had a meaningful purpose for building a system myself and then just spending money on something without a purpose seemed like a waste. But recently I thought, hey, I could actually use a NAS for storing my data or even a personal cloud storage so I can keep stuff off my laptop. And I know that I could just buy dedicated NAS hardware for that purpose, but then I thought that I could use that machine for other things as well, like running multiple Virtual Machines on it (one where I have a database running that I need for training, and some linux machines that I use for different purposes), and a small personal web server and maybe other things in the future. Also for running software, that I don't want to clutter my laptop with and for software development purposes. I also wanted to have a system that allows me to learn networking stuff hands on, which I guess that I will when I set everything up. 1. Budget & Location ~1100€ (absolute max 1500€), located in Austria 2. Aim As mentioned above, I have the following purposes in mind: - run multiple VMs - run a small personal web server (just for private/family purposes and for learning) - set up a NAS / private cloud storage for media and stuff that I don't want to keep on my laptop and that I currently keep on external drives (I'd also want my family to be able to use it): so I wanted a case with many drive bays, because I wanted to run a RAID of drives and have the possibility to expand later) - for training machine learning models (just for private purposes and for personal learning right now) - generally as a server for learning purposes for myself OS: not sure yet whether I'll just use windows or a Linux. 3. Monitors I already have a monitor sitting on my desk that I could use as it doesn't work too well with my laptop anyways. I think it's an Acer ED273 27". 4. Peripherals I have a mouse lying around, but I'll need a keyboard. 5. Why are you upgrading? I wanted to build a system for a long time now and I finally thought of a purpose I could build a machine for, so it wouldn't just be "for fun", although it probably still is more for the sake of building than really needing it. Also, before scolding me for wanting to build a server with looks in mind - yes, I know that a server is not a system that's built for looks, but as it's going to be sitting on my desk, I thought it had a right to be nice looking, too. Now for the build: I've spent some time and research now on picking parts and I wanted to ask you guys what you think about my result. 12. Hello all. I searched long and hard through random google searches and other forums. I’m very new to server setup. Looking for a straight forward and easiest solution with my current setup and hardware. my setup: old cpu, ram, motherboard, and drives. Running freenas 11.3 successfully. I have my samba share setup in freenas and I’m able to access it completely in all my network devices (iPhones and windows 10 machines). This setup is ONLY for storage. It’s only use is going to be network attached storage. That being said... my problem: I want to be able to access the storage from anywhere using Nextcloud. Please don’t recommend google drive or Dropbox. I don’t want to use anyone else’s service. I’d like to have my own server for my own personal cloud storage. Nextcloud plugin installs fine on the freenas server But I can not figure out the setup. I know nothing about “cmd” and “Shell” and any other command line use. I just want to get Nextcloud setup on the freenas and be able to access it from my phone through my cellular network where ever I am. I’ll worry about security later as I know it will be connected to the internet. Let’s just get it setup first and we’ll go from there. this is mostly just personal photo and video storage to free up space on some iPhones when we are on vacation or out and about or whatever. The server will not be used for streaming of any kind. NO Plex or nothing of the sort. Just a basic external storage drive that I can access from anywhere. again it’s working perfectly on the home network it does exactly what I need it to do, but only from my home network. I just need help getting it online via Nextcloud. Any help would be greatly appreciated. All I could find through other forums where setup guides using older versions of freenas that don’t relate to freenas 11.3 thank you for any help.
  13. It used to be 50Gig Mega for my go to, since i've not checked in quite a while, it has been changed to like 15 gigs, same as Google Drive if not less. (I have free 17gig, as I did a survey) So, are there cloud storage sites that offer 20gig or more storage? I don't like referral stuff. If it becomes very bad, I can always create many GDrive accounts, and join them with code and make a ui that scatters data in many accounts and make it seem I have ONE big storage. I could use some help.
  14. Hello, I have a local Network Attached Storage device which I have. The drive has, from the time of writing this thread, 1.24TB of used space and 2.33TB of free space. As you can see, this is a large amount of data on this drive. This is a company drive and are actively looking for backup solutions. We attempted to use OneDrive and have been paying large amounts for their subscription, however, there were problems. After several months of support tickets and back-to-back phone calls, the final outcome was that the storage was not backing up to OneDrive due to our insufficient disk space on our C drive. Now, the problem is, we will not have 1 or 2TB free on any of our PCs to back the data up because apparently, it sync from C > NAS > OneDrive and from conclusion, I can rule out that this is not a cloud storage solution. We require a solution that the data is, preferably backed up constantly & updated with minimal human intervention (which we initially thought OneDrive was, but it's not). I have tried transferring the data via web browsers to OneDrive, but given the size of data, it just crashed. So in essence, we need our company data backed up without any synchronization from the C drive. I have tried looking at "OneDrive mappers", but they are rubbish and do not work. I spent an entire day yesterday trying out one product & the transfer stopped at 360GB, upon asking the support representative why this happened, he apologized and informed me that their product was not made for large transfers. If it helps, the NAS drive make and model is "WDMYCloud". Thanks guys.
  15. I'm looking for setup advice on home network storage. At the moment we run a Western Digital MyCloud 2TB and it's been nothing but problems since Windows 10 was released. I chose it because everyone can access it from their individual devices locally and it can be accessed remotely through the MyCloud web login. Unfortunately ever since Windows 10 was released the MyCloud rarely ever appears as a Computer device on Windows Explorer > My Network and if it does it doesn't connect. This means you have to use the WD software or the web login and download the files to then re-upload which is not convenient. I have contacted Western Digital support and they simply blamed Windows 10 and told me to get in contact with Microsoft. I always thought it was something to do with my Windows 10 Education license which has caused other issues but I get different issues and the same lack of success with the two Windows 10 Home licensed machines. The only machine in the house it runs flawlessly with through Windows Explorer is an old HP G5000 (G5056EA) laptop running Windows Vista 32 bit. I'm going to give another attempt of troubleshooting after I gave up early in the summer. Ultimately I feel we need to improve backup options as they are flaky old HDDs or nothing and was wondering what assurance measures others can recommend putting into place in addition to any potential MyCloud replacements. We do a lot of photography and shoot in raw (NEF) with a lot of Photoshop files to accompany them. I have a lot of CAD files from when I was at University and from personal projects with a few video/ premiere pro/ indesign and illustrator files as well. Not really any budget at the moment as I'm not quite sure the scale of the project. It would be good if there was something like the MyCloud but where you can add and takeaway drives as inevitably we will fill the drives and need more but don't necessarily need them to be accessible all the time. Essentially we need to refresh the way we store and backup our creative library with additional back stops.
  16. hey Guys quick question i want to set up a cloud based offsite backup for my home server and ive looked at backblaze but the problem i have with them is it dosnt allow you to back up a server (server2016) i stumbled upon livedrive and went through there documentation but it says nothing about backing up a server operating system. if anyone uses livedrive with win server does it work is there any specific configs you have to do etc. if it dosnt work what other options are there. my server is 12.7tb formatted
  17. Okay im overwhelmed and need some help for my wife and I lol. Ill definitely be asking for help with other things but ill start with cloud storage, thanks in advance! So we want to buy a cloud storage where we can backup our photos, phones, important documents, videos, and backup our computers. What we have: chromebook, ipad, windows pc, both have iphones, macbook, and a linux pc for school. We have maybe 6-8tbs of stuff. Idk if its worth mentioning too, but plan on making a Home media server to watch our videos and listen to our music, not sure if cloud can help with that too without needing something local? we do have DSL though Can someone recommend something for us. Chrome seemed to work good but feel like they have there fingers and noses in everything? Or am I being to paranoid about them.
  18. An article on The Register serves as a good Public Service Announcement (PSA) on why we should maintain local & backed up copies of movies and music purchased in digital format. Essentially, what has happened is that a biologist found out that three movies he had purchased through iTunes had disappeared from his library. When inquiring with Apple as to where his movies had gone, he learned that Apple had lost the licensing rights to those movies. Basically, if he had not downloaded and saved a copy on local storage, he lost those movies completely. Apple did offer up something in the way of recompense in the form of four movie rentals up to $5.99 a piece, however that was more a discretionary offer. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/09/12/apple_film_rights/ So this serves as a good reminder that no matter which platform you purchase your digital content on, it is worthwhile to download a local copy to storage and not just count on having it available and retained in the distributors system. Reminds me that I should probably see about getting more space on my NAS at home.
  19. As most of you probably know, Google Photos offers free unlimited storage for videos, but they scale them down to 1080p @ 30fps if they're any higher when you upload them. You also, apparently, can only upload videos that are under 10 GB in size. But on Youtube, once your phone number is verified, the upload limit is 128GB or 12 hours per video. There are videos on Youtube up to 8k @ 60fps. So wouldn't it be a reasonable alternative for free, unlimited video storage in original quality to simply upload to Youtube and make the videos private?
  20. hey guys i have like 600 songs in my phone and i want to take a backup of them. for some reason when i plugged my phone to the computer it does not see all the music files that are actually in the phone's storage. these files are not corrupted or anything, i can play them on my phone with no issue. i tried to even bluetooth them to my pc and it worked. since there's just too many to select and bluetooth, i wish if there's a way to upload all songs to something like google drive so i could download them to my pc.
  21. Okay, so I have a quite a specific request when it comes to back up services. as of now I'm looking at dropbox and/or google drive. I have about 90GB of work I want to backup and be able to easily access and download any part of said work. So what I'm trying to figure out is with these services they are more of a "syncing" style of service, so both your computer and the cloud are the same, which is cool. But when I use the dropbox program it will place the sync folder on my C drive, but my work is on my F drive. I don't want two copies of my work (the original location F: and copying it to C: for dropbox), so i manually upload my work through the browser, but doing this the program sees I have nothing in my dropbox folder (C:) and will start downloading it. there for i end up having two copies of my work and a full SSD (my C:). is there a way to just upload a specific folder that doesn't have to be on the C: and upload it without me having to re-download it again? the only thing I can think of that will theoretically work is to change dropbox/google drive save location to where my work is saved. so it will automatically upload any changes done whether its a modified existing file or brand new files, and it won't download another copy as the space is occupied by the same folder. can this happen? is there any service that can do that or am I out of my league here? I would like to be able to have it automatically back up as it will save a lot of time on my end. which comes to another question. if I were to skip using google drive/dropbox programs and just drag and drop in the browser, if I were to upload the parent work folder (all my work is in sub-folders inside of it), then make changes to it like adding a new file or modify an existing one then drag and drop the same parent folder into the browser again, will it try and upload the whole thing again? or will it figure out the difference and only upload the changes? sorry if it's hard to understand and it doesn't make sense, I'm trying to wrap my head around it myself. the TL:DR version. I want a way to automatically upload my work without having to re-download it due to the "sync" design of the application.
  22. What would the best option be for one goal, simply the most amount of storage possible. Currently, Im looking at 3, 3TB WD blues for $99 a piece. Thats $300 for 9TB of storage. I dont really know much about other HDDs other than WD. The data on these drives although I dont want to lose, is non-critical so Im not looking for the "best of the best" it terms of data protection. What other drives could I get (any size) that combined could give me for storage for less or the same money?
  23. Source Link (PC World): http://www.pcworld.com/article/3014183/data-center-cloud/microsoft-will-let-you-keep-your-free-15gb-of-onedrive-storage-if-you-claim-it.html Claim back your OneDrive storage link: https://preview.onedrive.com/bonus/ So recently Microsoft announced that they'd be slashing OneDrive storage for the general public and this caused outcry because users were left with a measly 5GB (starting next year). In a report from PC World there is a way to claim back your storage.. but there's a catch! "Microsoft has grudgingly agreed to let current OneDrive users keep their 15GB of free cloud storage and 15GB of free Camera Roll “bonus” storage, rather than dropping you to 5GB as previously stated" - M Hachman The article states that "there’s a small catch: by selecting the offer, you agree “to receive promotional emails from OneDrive,” ". But in order to combat this you can simply unsubscribe to the mailing services or use the Outlook 'Sweep' tool to permanently block the emails. I think Microsoft is doing this in some part because some of the OneDrive users they had would consider transferring their files to the Google Drive therefore allowing Google to expand their cloud base even further.
  24. Microsoft has announced that they're gonna be cutting OneDrive storage for all free users from 15GBs to 5GBs. Like... why! Is there any point in using this service now (I use about 12GBs)? I'm gonna make a Google account and transfer all my information and files over. I might purchase an Android based phone while I'm at (Google doesn't support the Windows store). 25. My mom stores all the photos she's taken over the years on an old laptop that I just know is at risk of failing at any time, even though it works OK (It still runs vista). I told her to back up but I know she won't unless I do it for her. What off-site backup solutions would you recommend? The only ones I've used are Carbonite and Backblaze, but now just use dropbox and google drive. However, I don't think the latter would work for my mom, since it would involve putting the files into a specific place. Price isn't really a concern. What would you guys recommend for just something that would basically back up everything automatically? I was just going to use one of the two I mentioned but it's been a while, so was wondering if there's a better option now.
