  1. A couple of months ago in April 2020, Universal Pictures released the popular sequel to the kids film 'Trolls' called 'Trolls World Tour' produced by Dreamworks Animation. However, unlike most theatrical releases, the film was instead released online via video streaming/demand platform. The main reason for this was down to the Covid-19 pandemic; or so they claim. Nevertheless, the film did surprisingly well and actually broke numerous records. This led to the Studio announcing that they would be doing further streaming/VOD projects in the future. The cinema franchises didn't take this well and the largest cinema chain in the world, AMC has publicly stated they will not release any future films by the studio as a result of Universal Pictures choice to do streaming/VOD releases. - Ultimately, this is because it takes away the cinema industries vital product in order to attract their own customers for views and up-sell other products. Following this, other cinema chains have agreed with AMC. I don't think anything will happen immediately. I bet other studios are standing still to see how Universal Pictures actions and future releases pans out and whether they are highly successful (Which I think they will be.) - Can you imagine if the new Star Wars / 007 / etc came out and you could easily just stream the film from home after work on day of release? I think it's just a matter of time before studios create a platform where new releases can be streamed from home for one-off prices. Not only will they be able to attract new audiences, but they will also be able retain more profits if they create/own the platform they use for the VOD films. It doesn't come without risks though. When streaming films, it will make copyright and piracy an even bigger issue and they will lose a higher percentage of their profits to this. Albeit, most people who use pirated films anyway more than likely would have pirated the film regardless had they not gone to watch it in cinema. Furthermore, some films kind of rely on the amplification of the cinema effects (visuals / audio) to make the film more immersive. There has been many bad films I have watched in cinema, but still enjoyed my experience because it was on the big screen. Then there are films that I wished I had watched at the cinema like Interstellar. I'm not 100% sure though if cinema as a whole will die. I have noticed over the last 10 years, a lot of my local cinemas in the UK have started showings of older movies (which I think is great). Imagine being able to go to the cinema and watch Back to the Future for the first time? Ironic right? I still think they will certainly take a hit though and many will close. It's one of the industries that need to adapt or die. What do you think? EDIT: Actually as of today (8th of June 2020), a new trailer for the horror film 'You Should Have Left' was released on YouTube. This was at the end of the trailer... I guess they really are going forward with it. Looks like they have multiple different platforms you can watch films on too. I'm glad Amazon Prime is on there.
  2. RED the makers of expensive cinema cameras is coming out with a new model soon. The Komodo a 6k small body camera for around 6k with early colored editions being 7k. Red hydrogen can be used with it and those who bought one can get a discount. Its a super 35 sensor like most cinema cameras Uses canons new RF mount meaning it can be adapted to almost everything other than Sony E mount. 6k recording is only in redcode raw Pro res is available in 4k, 2k and HD Uses CFast 2.0 cards not redmags powered by canon BP batteries It does 6k 17:9 at up to 40, 6k 2.4:1 or 5k up to 48, 4k 60, 2k 120 Has phase detection AF which is rare in most cinema cameras All of canons have it branded as Dual Pixel AF and some of Sonys new ones have it as well 3.5mm mic no XLR My thoughts: I'm interested in this but the lack of XLR will make it a hard sell for solo doc filmmakers. This will likely force canon to refresh the C200 and maybe the C100 however this can really hurt companies like kinefinty and z-cam. It isn't the cheapest 6k camera that going to the pocket 6k at 2k but that needs at least 1k spend to getting set up right. the Kinefinity Mavo 6k is almost the same price as the Komodo at 7k for a running body with a lens mount. for those who want FF at 6k the Mavo 6kFF is 10k for a running body It was used to shoot this open for SNL Public test footage sources https://www.cinema5d.com/red-komodo-update-price-pre-release-custom-color-version-pdaf/ https://ymcinema.com/2020/06/04/red-komodo-more-specs-revealed-and-real-world-footage/
  3. I understand LMG exports videos to 'Cineform' with Adobe Media Encoder & Resolve to do De noise. Premiere Pro is the editing tool of choice with custom servers and codes. Apple Pro Res is now available on softwares running on Windows. In Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Resolve so I am really thinking of shifting to PC. Only reason I am still on a Mac OS is for ARRI codex VFS to backup Original Camera Files (OCF) from codex capture drives. I have also contacted Codex support. Looks like it will take some more time or may be, it will always be primarily Mac OS only for codex RAW for ARRI Camera's. I generally use Blackmagic Da Vinci Resolve Studio with Adobe Premiere Pro/Media Encoder. Even native camera tools like Red Cine X pro or ARRI RAW convertor or Sony Catalyst to transcode for offline edit. These are also available on windows. It looks like I will be able to work on most of the proprietary original camera files to transcode with windows apps like mac drive pro to read & write mac formatted drive. No doubt building a machine to playback 8k R3D and for transcoding makes sense on Windows PC. Here are some doubts. I have. Can NAS communicate with Windows & Mac Networks through shared storage Ethernet. Any third party solution to use Codex VFS for camera like ARRI RAW to safely backup footage from codex capture drives (cards) with apps like Hedge with md5 or xxHash64 checksum. Any suggestions.
  4. This is currently a hypothetical, but I plan on eventually buying one of these sets. Looking to start my research early. Let's say that one has a flexible budget of between $10K and $13K for a set of cinema lenses. Target focal lengths are around 14mm, 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm (I dislike 35mm; willing to live without 14mm). Maximum aperture of 2.8 or higher on average. Use case: FS5 and A7iii A/B cam setup. I have a set of Rokinon CINE-DS lenses which will work, but I'm looking to start checking out other lenses for future work. The Gold Standard: Cooke S4 Minis. Never used these lenses, but oh my god do they look beautiful. I prefer these over all the ARRI/Zeiss/Leica high price cinema lenses. Let's review the options: Rokinon Xeen Primes** (14, 24, 50, 85, 135) Soft when wide open. Good color and contrast. Great value. Zeiss CP.2 Primes** (24, 50, 85) Super sharp all around. Maximum aperture varies among different CP.2s. Flares are garbage. Canon Cine Primes (24, 50, 85) Reddish cast to skin tones. Makes people look thinner and kind of strange. Sharp & consistent. Sigma Cine Primes (24, 50, 85) Not 114mm (don't care that much). Super sharp. Good color. Sigma Cine Zooms** (18-35 and 50-100) Same feel as Sigma Primes More coverage Heavy Doesn't cover Full Frame. Build quality is great, but I just don't like the feel of these lenses. I assume the Sigma Primes feel the same. Sony Cinealta Primes (20, 25, 35, 50, 85, 135) Favorite look of all these lenses, on par with Sigmas. Super coverage. Great value, but not as good as Sigma Zooms. Since they're primes, they can be split among two cameras more easily. Doesn't cover Full Frame. Can't find a place to rent these to be able to try before buying. I'm referring to these lenses if you haven't heard of them: https://www.adorama.com/sosclpk6f.html?rfkref=productPage ** - Lenses I have used in the past. So, to any other cinematographers out there, do you have any experience with these lenses and any input for me? Do you know other lenses which you like more? Am I wrong? This will be a big decision when I come to making it in the future, so I'd like to know as much as I can about everything here well in advance. Thanks guys. P.S. Anamorphic is a whole other ball game, so please don't suggest the new Orion lenses or anything like that.
  5. Hey guys I don't know about you guys, but I think that my type of gaming (mostly 1st person shooter or 3rd person over 60fps games with rapid movements) has somewhat decreased my experience in watching movies in the cinemas. I think its because since i play every game above 60 fps with motion blur always turned if if possible cause fuk that and since movies are at 24fps with high motion blur in fast moving scenes. So whenever there is a fast pan it kind of hurts my eyes because I feel like there is a jitter and way to much out of focus on screen (motion blur). what do you guys think? it is just me or do you notice this as well?
  6. I got bored tonight, so I fetched a model of a GTX Titan, colored it black, added fancy lighting, and voila. My first decent looking Cinema 4D render, enjoy in its full glory.
  7. For those that make extensively, which is your form factor of choice and why? Now that I started doing more video work again, I am contemplating getting dedicated video gear, but want to know what form factors work for what scenarios and get a general idea of how everyone uses their gear. Thanks!
  8. I have a few files of high-quality video (mkv) that I was looking to play back through my home theatre. I used to stream a lot from my PC to xbox and ps3, but have found it a lot more reliable to just copy videos onto an SD card and play it back from that. I downloaded a TV show, with episodes around 20-25 mins and around 1.2GB in size. I suspect they might be 4K or at least a lot higher than 1080p. These files have dual audio and subtitles - but my TV hasnt had any troubles with that before. Whenever I try to play them from my SD card audio and video go out of sync, frame rate drops terribly and it's just downright unplayable. I've tried playing them from an external HDD onto my computer, but that doesnt seem to work either. The only way to watch them is to play directly from the internal HDD in my computer. (I am bottlenecked using USB 2.0) The SD cards I'm running are 30MB/s and although still unplayable I've noticed a huge difference in play quality from 15MB/s cards. I'm thinking it's just a bitrate issue? In any case, I've ordered higher speed cards online which should be due any day now. Thanks, saya_kucing
  9. Hi I want to host a open air cinema this summer. There are going to be around 100 peoples so I need a big screen. The best way is a projector. I don't know a lot about projectors when it comes to admitted light or contrast. I need your help. As of now I plan to use my own Benq W1000 as renting a projector is quit expensive. The cinema will start around 11 pm so the sky should be dark by then, even in July. Will this work with that projector. I used https://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W1000-projection-calculator-pro.htm to calculate but I don't know all the units and what they stand for. 4m (13feet) screen would be fine for me. Can I do that? Thanks for your answer Janick Spielmann
  10. This might sound really weird, but can you use headphones with a subwoofer?
  11. Hello, So my apple cinema display 23 inch is giving me an error code "Short-Short-Long" People say its probably the power supply but i have tried 3 different once and they all didn't work. Has anyone ever encountered this problem and how has this bin resolved?
  12. so guys I've come across a online movie streaming app that works surprisingly well but i still don't know if streaming movies like these for absolutely nothing is legal or not i know that i would never get caught that doesn't make it right if anyone could shead some light on the matter that would be awesome heres the app https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/online-cinema/9wzdncrdjzn4

  15. Lytro Cinema is basically a camera that allows more post-production editing by capturing the scene in layers based on the distance of the camera. This allows the user to delete for example a background without touching what ever is in front of the background closer to the camera. This effectively eliminates the need for a greenscreen. The way the camera works is that it creates a 3D space of the recorded area, and that also allows movement of the camera after it was shot increasing the stabilzation opportunities as post-processing effects. The camera also focuses on all depth surfaces, allowing the user to choose the focus point after shooting to create the depth of field effect digitally, or just to leave everything in the shot focused. Camera also allows you to change the framerate of an individual asset in the scene. The CEO of Lytro, Jason Rosenthal, has confirmed in a recent blogpost that Lytro will be moving away from the consumer grade cameras, and focusing on VR and more professional part of the field. Reasoning behind this is the lowered interest in consumer grade cameras with the widespread of phones and their cameras and the better opportunities in the professional field. Lytro Cinema prototype shown at NAB 2016 Links to soruces/articles: Lytro Cinema Lytro Blog TechCruch DPreview Article 11th of April DPreview Article 20th of April (NAB 2016) PetaPixel Camera known specifications: 755 RAW Megapixels Up to 300 fps (I presume by lowering the quality) Claimed to have a 40K resolution and 400GB write per second Up to 16 stops of Dynamic Range Intergrated High Res Active Scanning Systems My thoughts: I personally think that Lytro is onto something here. If this model isn't what sets the standard for big movie studios, the one that does set the standard will certainly be using this techonoly. At least we're headed in a new and interesting direction, and I myself am really interested to see where this direction leads.
  16. Hello! I'm a newbie so any help would be much appreciated! I am buying this monitor: http://www.amazon.com/CROSSOVER-27QW-IPS-LED-2560x1440/dp/B00EZM7GCY But I have one problem! I have nearly completed my hackintosh build but have run out of budget, therefore don't have a dedicated graphics card YET. I have a ga-z87x-d3h motherboard and an I7 4770k. Now the motherboard has HDMI 1.4a and can support up to 4K! The monitor only supports DVI Dual link so I need to connect it to the motherboard for the mean time until I get the funds for my GTX 780. On the gigabytes website (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4518#sp) it says the DVI-D port can only support a max res of 1980x1200 from this port. So my question is, can I get a DVI dual link to HDMI 1.4 that will display 2560x1440p natively with no issues? Thanks guys, look forward to your thoughts!
  17. What OS to install on Raspberry PI 3 for home theatre , i planned to install Windows 10 and connect it with HDMI , and i hope it will be good for netflix? Any recommendations?

  19. So, i have a large empty room, that is designated to be a living room / lounge... I was thinking more a home cinema then a living room, its a long room with the size (guestimate) of 10ft x 18ft. I was thinking of 4k projector + media center, any other ideas?
  20. Relevant Information YES I am aware that Blackmagic has since Monday released a new 4.0 BETA firmware for the Ursa Mini 4.6K, but since I sent the camera back before this was out I made this video using firmware 3.3. The new firmware does add A LOT of awesome features including quicker access to controls, so thumbs up to Blackmagic for getting that rolled out. Camera Body I/O aside the Blackmagic had a few quirks that I will mention here for anyone considering on purchasing an Ursa Mini 4.6K. The first is that all the threaded mounting points on the camera are sized for ¼”-20 screws. The reason this could be a small issue for some is that most tripod plates come with a single ¼”-20 screw and a single 3/8” screw, meaning that you will need to have extra ¼”-20 screws on hand to prevent your tripod plate from twisting loose. My second minor gripe with the Ursa Mini’s body is that the power button is ONLY on the inside of the monitor. This was particularly annoying when I was using the camera handheld eventually needing to switch batteries and in order to do so I had to take the camera off my shoulder open the monitor, power the camera off, set the camera down or have someone hold it then finally change batteries. When trying to work quickly with a crew in particular this was a minor but noticeable annoyance. My third and final physical complaint is the omission of the global shutter. While I understand that Blackmagic could not make the process work with both the promised DR and the Global shutter it is a bit of a let down. The silver lining to this is the rolling shutter on the Ursa is very solid and was never an issue even when using the camera handheld. In all the work I put this camera through not once did it cross my mind that the rolling shutter made the image much worse. I consider Global Shutter to be a feature reserved for higher end cameras and there aren't many cameras close to the Ursa's price point that have it. QC Issues Like all of Blackmagic’s releases this camera has been in high demand and had a lot of people in line with pre-orders. While I can only guess, this seems to have led to difficulties in their QC process. Our unit from B&H had a small imperfection on the cameras monitor that was not generally noticeable when you had an image on screen but was definitely visible going through the cameras menus. This could very easily be damage the camera received during shipping but ether way we ended up with it, annoying. The second more pressing issue we had physically was the REAR SDI out on the camera did not work at any point in time. I tried multiple camera and full size desktop monitors and half a dozen SDI cables with no luck. This was disappointing but not something I believe Blackmagic would fix if my past customer service experience with them is any indication. This is however something that many will find unacceptable since you will be without your camera for up to several weeks depending on where you live. The last and possibly the most talked about QC issue that people have been mentioning is the magenta cast that some of the 4.6K sensors seem to be exhibiting. While I was shooting with the Ursa Mini I was using a GenusTech Variable ND filter and a Hoya IR Cut Filter since I was often outside shooting for this video and the short film. When using those two filters together I did not notice any magenta cast in any of the footage I shot, making sure to go through every shot start to finish checking for it. The corners of the frame seem to be the dead giveaway on other owners units but I did not experience such a drastic issue. That being said when I was not using the ND filter with the IR cut filter I did notice a SLIGHT magenta cast in some of my evening footage particularly at 800 ISO (Will be adding screen grabs in the morning) When I first noticed it I was a tad bit concerned however after doing a simple tint correction with in Premiere Pro (nothing fancy) I was able to remove all signs it was ever there, in fact many shots in the video originally had the slight tint and I am fairly certain you would never know it was there to begin with after colour correction was done. It is a shame others are having issues with their copy of the camera but if most currently shipping Ursa Mini’s give the images I got from the one I tested I think there will be many happy owners of this camera out there still. I do hope Blackmagic addresses this issue full swing as its one of main drawbacks being talked about this camera at the moment, but it is also something that should be fixable with time as these cameras begin shipping in larger numbers. It isn't something to brush past if you are considering this camera but if you can afford the time to correct it when it arrives the rest of the image will impress. Finally I hope you guys enjoy the video and if you have any other specific questions about the Ursa Mini 4.6k please done hesitate to ask me on twitter: @Brandon_Y_lee

  22. Blackmagic Cinema Camera NCIX: N/A Amazon: http://georiot.co/31AJ HyperX 3K SSD NCIX: http://bit.ly/1d7RVB8 Amazon: http://georiot.co/2yJJ The Blackmagic Cinema 2.5K camera is our newest piece of equipment. If you liked the "HD-ness" of the latest WAN show, then I guess you already like it! We went with Kingston HyperX 3K SSDs for our camera because they're on the validated list. Sandforce-based drives are perfect for use with this camera because of their strong write speeds and great performance with highly compressible data.
  23. Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5k - EF Mount Seemingly Relevant Information I had pre-ordered the camera some time last year and forgot about it until I got a call one day early this year. Did I still want follow through with my order for the camera at ~$2,995 plus taxes? After an internal struggle lasting a couple of days, I declined. Then it went down $1,000 a few months later and I bought one off Amazon from Adorama. Win! Out of the Box The box was dinged in transit but everything inside was well packed. You'll find a small packet with some instructions, a CD/DVD for Resolve and other software, the USB dongle license for DaVinci Resolve, carrying strap, camera with sun shield, and a modular power adapter with several tips to accommodate power sockets around the world. The design of the box is fine, it's a box, the artwork and layout is detailed but clean. The box is hard to open as it creates a bit of an air seal. Once you get the lid off and pick it up, you're greeted with a surprisingly heavy chunk of metal. Pretty On the Outside The ID is subtle, clean, bare, and incredibly solid. The aluminum unibody is sexy, heavy, built like a tank. The simple and flat form factor has garnered a bit of hate for its lack of ergonomics of any sort but if you go into it with the understanding that you're going to put it on a tripod, shoulder rig, what have you, it's just not an issue. Would it be nice if it was shaped more friendly for holding? Absolutely. Do I hold it against the camera? No, it has a purpose and handheld 'run & gun' isn't it. If it's not metal, it's soft-touch or rubber. The front, with exception to the barrel turret, is soft touch with a metal border. Covering the side I/O are rubber flaps. A hinged metal door serves as the SSD compartment lid; there is no locking mechanism to keep the bay closed and my SSD is too thin; it wobbles and rattles inside without a shim to keep it still. The buttons and area on the face are soft-touch. It feels nice, it feels like a premium feature. Unfortunately, this makes the buttons feel less robust and instills in me a fear that the coating will come off. Rational? No idea. We'll see in time, I guess. Immediate observations are that it picks up dirt right quick and it shows easily given that it's black. The screen is bright, clear, accurate, and informative. Along the bottom is all the information it will ever display. If you're out in the sun or have a light behind you, good luck seeing anything because the glossy screen isn't just glossy, it's like a god damned mirror. Wear a hoodie at all times when operating the camera so you can block out the light. With only 9 buttons, it looks deceptively simple for something capable of so much. User Interface via Touch Coming from DSLRs, ENG cameras, small camcorders, or the FS700, having so few buttons or physical controls seems crippling until you realize that there isn't much to control. There's a button to enable peaking, a button to auto-set the iris, power, menu, then playback controls. So how do you set everything else? Through the touchscreen. Again, you find the bare minimum. It has everything you need to operate it contained within 4 screens. Though it offers everything you need, it doesn't have everything you would want. There is no custom white balance, leaving you only 6 presets to choose from. When you tap on the screen you get the slate where you can input the shot metadata. Sounds good, right? It doesn't work. Only FCP and Resolve seem to read it and it doesn't do it well, several parts are even missing within Resolve; Premiere and Avid don't seem to be able to read the metadata at all. As someone who uses Premiere at work and Avid at home, it's disheartening to see that there was no consideration for those two. Through the menu you can set your frame rates (23.97, 24, 25, 29.97, 30), timelapse intervals, video/film colour profiles for recording as well as the display, sound options, and things like zebras. It's quick, responsive, and accurate. What more can I say about it? It's touchscreen countrol done right. Beauty Is Only Skin Deep; It's What's Inside That Counts Right? Well, so far the picture is great. I find it to be kind of grainy out of the camera but cleans up beautifully in post. ProRes and DNxHD 4:2:2 are adequate alternatives to the RAW CinemaDNG files. There is definitely enough leeway in the codec to make changes in post, whether stylistic or technical. Though the white balance was considerably off, it cleaned up well enough after fixing it in Resolve that it didn't really even matter. Coming from h.264 on the DSLR and the related AVCHD from the FS700, the data contained within the ProRes and DNxHD codecs is a refreshing change. The dynamic range offered by the video LUT is great, the range offered by the film LUT in RAW is amazing. I'm hearing 13-stops and I'm not going to argue with that. When used with the included DaVinci Resolve, you've got plenty to work with. Though I might argue with Blackmagic's decision to not include lossless compressed; RAW at 5MB per frame leaves my 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD capable of only holding about 50 minutes of footage. Shooting RAW that uses up so much space means you're filling up the SSD completely and quickly, potentially leading to a quick death to it. The matter is made worse by Blackmagic's incredibly stupid decision to not include the ability for the camera to send a TRIM command to the SSD. if you don't know, TRIM is the SSD equivalent to defrag and is necessary for keeping your SSD from slowing down and dying, especially when you're shooting RAW. The high write speeds required to do so is easily compromised when you're not properly maintaining the SSD integrity and failure means dropped frames or worse. The ~2.4 crop factor hasn't really bugged me that much, really. I don't think I'll be getting a wider lens any time soon while my 17-35 exists. This might bite me in the ass in the future if I find myself in a cramped space but until then, I'm running happy-go-lucky. Sticking a 70-200mm on it is a bit much unless you're looking for extreme close-ups. Incredible But Flawed There's no denying the amazing image that you can get out of this camera. Though it's up to the user to make things look good, having the data/material to make it look even better is not something to be disregarded when considering cameras and their codecs. The 12-30v DC input for an external power supply is something I greatly appreciate as it allows me to avoid buying extremely expensive batteries or numerous small ones that I would have to change out constantly (Pocket, I'm looking at you!) The crop factor is acceptable, the touchscreen UI is the best I've seen, the build is perfect and the price is right. With all that said, it's infuriating that TRIM being so easy to implement (literally a few lines of code, apparently) was left out. Blackmagic's decision not to implement TRIM has and will render SSDs unusable in short order as I doubt most would even know how to induce TRIM on their own. There's no way to know how full your SSD is either. You have to keep a running tally of your runtime; it's simple math and they couldn't include it. Then the lack of custom white balance leaves you standing there thinking to yourself, "What the fuck could they have been thinking?" A slate input screen is great in theory but utterly useless when nothing reads it. Audio? Didn't mention it earlier 'cause it's unusable too. Not only is the frequency response inaccurate, at one point it was automatically switching from MIC to LINE if it detects clipping, rendering it essentially inoperable (I'm not sure if this is still the case). If you know what you're getting into and have a solution to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera's numerous problems, you should be more than happy with it at the MSRP of $1,995 USD. Update: LUT used for 'Video' record/display renders reds noticeably orange and overall is more orange than displayed on screen. This applies for the in-camera Look Up Table as well as the one used within DaVinci Resolve.
