Hey guys, I'm new to home servers, and I'm currently running Ubuntu server Lts on an old MacBook pro, with a docker container spun up for Adguard (this is what got me started) I'm inheriting a Dell PowerEdge r210ii with 12GB DDR3 and 4x500GB HDD Other potential useful information: I have bell Aliant fibe 1Gb and a R7000 — Nighthawk AC1900 Smart WiFi Dual Band Gigabit Router, What I would like to do maybe not even all at once, is the following (in priority): -Secure my network -Have baby monitoring cameras not accessible to the outside world (just my wife's and my phones/PC/tablet) -have security cameras that we can monitor and record but not pay a cloud fee, and is secure (separate VLAN?) -home automation that doesn't touch the outside world but can still use Alexa to control (preferably no monthly fees) -set up my own cloud storage -have a media server I'm not necessarily looking for a step by step guide, but am just a little overwhelmed by everything that is out there and need a little push in the right direction, especially to just get started. Any input/video tutorials/articles would be greatly appreciated! Ill be happy to provide additional information as needed too:)

As the techie in the family I've been put in charge of home security. Which is difficult cuz it's not a field that I'm familiar with. I live in an apartment so 1 smart camera covering the door is enough. The camera I bought is a TP-Link Tapo C211. The main issue, I'm having, is how to connect this camera to a display so that anyone inside the apartment has a screen with a 24/7 view of the door without needing to open an app. Having asked around the store I bought it from and some other stores it seems like there's only 2 official ways. 1. To connect to a Google Nest Hub Max or any smart assistant with a built in screen. 2. With an NVR/video recorder box. This one seems straightforward but when I asked the salesperson if I can use 3rd party NVRs. He implied no, I had to use TP-Link's own line of NVRs, which seems to either only work or work best with TP-Link's VIGI cameras as they have PoE. The problem is that the cheapest NVR costs RM349 (USD75),then have to get storage for the NVR which uses surveillance drives so that's another RM250 (USD53) for a 2TB. This is all before factoring in a display, granted I know of some functioning monitors just gathering dust in the store room of the family office that I can re-use. But still, it doesn't change that just to install 1 camera, I have to spend RM600 (USD130) just so I can have a screen with a live view. There has to be a better solution for this, I know there is. I have a smart TV in the house that has a web browser, not sure if that can somehow help? In any case, any advice and tech tips is very much appreciated

home networking Home truenas/cctv/plex build
CRITCH1982 posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hey folks, first time poster be gentle .. I'm looking into setting up a truenas server at home for file storage and my plex server, with eventual use to replace my cctv hopefully and have it all backed up and running through truenas, can it be done or am I well off?.. I currently run plex on my main pc arm but have no previous experience with truenas.. I've tried vm's in the past and failed miserably .. I've bought a couple year old system off a friend which I intend to add drive space to and use as the truenas build.. I've been looking into the ubiquiti dream machine pro to replace my router and add ap's and use unify protect through the dream machine to manage my cameras and network.. (do I need something like this or is it overkill) Not sure what else to put tbh, I need help though Anyone fancy holding my hand while I go on an adventure? -
Budget (including currency): Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Other details So I'm thinking of changing from my Blink cameras to some POE cameras. I have a PC that I use as a plex server and game server in my computer room, so that's got plenty of drive space and it's on 24/7. It's got an i5 10400, 32gb ram and 44tb of drive space. I would like to get a used POE switch in the attic space, and then drop the cable to the POE cameras surrounding the property. I'll probably be getting my cameras off Amazon. With a cable running from my router to the POE switch, would I be able to run some CCTV software on my mediabox PC and use it as an NVR and make the videos available to view on mobile? Pricing up a switch and 4 cameras to start, If this setup would work, it could be pretty affordable as I've already got the PC up and running for it. I had a look for videos regarding this, however all I can find are single camera setups, or how to set up an NVR. Any ideas?

Hi guys, Thanks for the help in advance. I have 8 Yi Outdoor Cameras 1080p which have the Yi-Hack mod installed on them which allows the cameras to be used with other software that support Custom RTSP streams. I have tried multiple programs. Shinobi, tinycam Pro, iSpy and others. But the issue that I am having is that I am either having a stable stream with low fps or high fps but the stream doesn't reconnect. I was thinking of buying an NVR from Hikvision but I cannot find anywhere a guide on how to add Custom RTSP streams to it. The manual does make a mention of adding RTSP Stream from a camera but it needs to support username and password. I have a system converts HDMI to a TV Channel and the signal from any device (Windows PC, Android TV Box, NVR) will be output to that converter and then it can be watch from a specific channel in every TV in the house. I was wondering if anyone has ever used an NVR from Hikvision with Custom RTSP Streams or if you guys have any software that you can recommend. Thanks in advance

Hello, everyone! First of all, I apologize if I explained anything badly as English isn't my native language! I apologize if this is posted in the wrong thread too! Well, I decided to grow more as a person and thought to myself what better way than tinkering more with technology? That's why I came to this forum as I have some questions about making an at-home CCTV system since I've never done it before so I please ask for your patience! First of all, I'd like to hear your advices for the system and cameras itself! I'm looking for a system (whether that's a small PC or a dedicated CCTV station+monitor) and cameras that are preferably decent quality and with a decent price! Something Full-HD (or even better if the price allows it), preferably able to be manually moved (through a phone app, this point isn't necessary though if the lens is able to cover a wide-enough area though!), night vision, with sound, and some I can see on my phone wherever I am! Oh, I'd also like to ask some tips on how to avoid someone else hooking into them if they'll be connected to the internet (cause if I'm right, that's the only possible way for me to check them "on the go" on my phone when I'm away from home) Price for this is around $1000 but I can always chip in more! Nothing above $1800 though, please! It's just a small at-home camera system project, I don't need super duper expensive security Second of all, there's a picture of what I'd like attached below but I'll try to explain it in words too. Basically, I'd like an "access point" (middle point) to my cameras outside to which I connect my cameras. Then the cables go from that "access point" to the CCTV's main station. Think of it as a little bit of cable managment but I'm doing this more since I can't directly connect every camera straight to the main station. So I'm asking for a "middle point" to where I'll connect the cameras and then connect it straight to the station. Is that even possible? Could anyone help me out with this, please? Thank you for your patience and help

Hi I currently have 8 analogue CCTV cameras that connect to a hikvision DVR. I want to remove this DVR from the equation. 1 for security purposes, 2 to apply machine learning smart intrusion detection and better way to acces the streams and view streams. I have a spare raspberry pi and thought that I could use this as a DVR. The cameras use BNC connectors. All tutorials on the internet so far have only showed people using the raspberry pi as the camera. I was wondering is it possible to connect the analogue BNC cameras to the raspberry pi via some sort of capture device The cameras are as follows: https://m.takealot.com/hikvision-1080p-2mp-turbo-hd-ir-bullet-camera/PLID49115293 Thank you in advance

Budget (including currency): ≈500; competitive w/ dash cams Country: U.S. Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CCTV; but with moving vehicles/traffic Other details: Mostly wondering about a camera that will do what we want and have a signal we can use. There’s lots of info about making your own cctv on YouTube so I imagine maybe that’s a good place to start? Seems to be lots of interest but I haven’t seen anyone here talk about using anything other than an r pi; using a whole pc with 12v ac power is NOT as issue for me there’s tons of info about that for subs and for van builds. You could even have it’s own battery to run off while parked and it won’t touch your battery; but the batteries both charge up when the car is running ect ect. Def ez pz. This is something I’m interested in working on and I had always assumed it was easy and I probably wasn’t the first. I’d like to find a solution so I’m open to any and all ideas and input. I don’t see why this can’t be done and hardwired into my car for the price of high-end dash cams or even significantly lower; there’s tons of info about hooking up cameras to pc’s for making your own cctv and all sorts of motion software for that. As long as there is a camera that is able to give digital feed and have the feed be used I don’t see any issues or limits even as far as data storage. if a thread like this exists already please lmk! I made my account for this so I’m new and new to forums or posting at least thanks!

Hi all, Wondering if you can help, I've been asked to upgrade a friends CCTV system, and I'm a bit stuck on how to proceed. He's currently running an old PC that's incredibly slow and running out of space very quickly. This is the card that's currently in there: http://www.apexcctv.com/p-250-avermedia-nv3000-security-dvr-card.aspx So, I'm planning a two phase upgrade process: - Phase 1: Upgrade the HDD's in the current system to 3TB WD drives to the current system to increase space. - Phase 2: Completely build a new PC with new capture cards with the ability to add new cameras. After speaking to AverMedia on the phone, they have told me that they no longer deal with CCTV, but they have raised a question internally to see what support they have and get back to me regarding the support for the card and current operating systems. Questions: 1) What other decent capture cards are out there, as far as I can tell, the cameras are being connected using BNC cables, which I'm assuming are glorified coaxial cables. 2) What are some half-decent surveillance software available for the answer to Q1 that are freeware/cheap? 3) Should I bother building a new PC or should I buy an already configured DVR such as this: http://www.ebuyer.com/726875-swann-dvr-16440h-ahd-16-channel-1tb-network-dvr-sodvr-16440h-uk 4) Should I just go to IP Cameras instead and start from scratch? Thanks!

I'm planning to have a room where i view my cctv feed from other places (work, restaurants etc) and I was thinking of having multiple displays to have each of them show a cctv feed for each place. I was wondering you guys have any recommendations on some software or websites that allow me view the security cam feed. The solution doesn't have to be within a budget.

Hey, I have a windows server and it is running Genius Visiom NVR as a Surveillance server, recording 24x7. I already have 2 3TB WB Purple drives which are currently being recorded to. With the software I'm using, to set a location for the recordings to be stored, they have to be stored in the main directory of the drive in a folder called "gvrec". e.g. If I was recording to the C drive I'd have to record to "C:\gvrec" or else it wouldn't work. I wanted to store the last 3-4 days of footage on a cloud storage service (preferably Dropbox). I want to do this as in the event that my server is destroyed during a home invasion, I will have a saved copy of the footage. (Will this method actually achieve this? As my thinking is that Dropbox might not sync the changes in real time) So, I've created a Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) in Dropbox and mounted it. This tricks the program and allows me to save the recordings in Dropbox. Can anyone suggest a better solution as I'm not 100% sure whether Dropbox actually syncs the changes to the VHD. ps I do not have physical access to the server as I do not visit my home that often.

I bought a new DVR to replace the old one the issue I'm having with the new one is that it doesn't come with it's own separate client software for Windows - it relies on IE plugins and it sucks ass the only good app available for it is for Android and iOS, but those aren't useful to me - vMEye https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vMEyeSuperHD.ui&hl=en does anyone know of a general use DVR client software? some info: DVR is AHD system recognizes itself as: V4.02.R11 port is 34567 I'll be using 8 cameras

Im looking at getting a NAS, i know Linus wouldn't go here, but i need one for file storage across my network. Im gonna be backing up my Music and some video there, as well as placing all my photos and using it as a server to be able to stream and view all of that on the move on my iPhone. However i am looking at getting a IP Camera or two in/around my house as the neighbours may be getting a extension and will be making security a harder thing for our home, at first I'm planning on a single camera inside with maybe a dummy box outside. As for machines hitting it, it will be my main gaming machine, my HTPC and my MacBook and a couple of iPhones and iPads as well. I have a budget of around £1,000, maybe a little more if the correct is a little more, I'm excluding drives as ill probably be throwing in a couple of 3TB WD Reds to start with, then adding more and more, larger drives as i need to do so. However I am interested in M.2/SSD cache-ing and Ram upgrades at a later date, even a CPU update if you can do that? I like the look of the Synology User Interface in its software, but i like the ease of use of the QNAP units, and am torn to which to get, id like either a 5, 6 or 8 bay unit. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I'm after some advice for our school CCTV server. Setup: Hardware: Dell R510, 8gb ram (on average 4gb used), 12TB set to raid 1 storage (so we get great write speed), two gigabyte Nic's (only one is currently used to pull data from cameras) Software: Windows Server 2012, Luxriot Evo S Switches: Cisco 3750's Problem: The server and software works well and the ram, cpu doesn't seem to be straining under average load, but the video playback isn't as smooth as we'd like. The past few months I've been eliminating possible bottlenecks, which had led to my concluding its a network bandwidth issue. By my calculations, if I have 85 cameras feeding my server 4mb a second, I need at least 340mb of bandwidth. I obviously can't get that with a single gigabyte connection (it seems to hit 200mb and not go any further, as that's a limit for gigabyte connection). So my plan is to activate the other nic and have dual gigabyte to help with the bandwidth load from all the cameras. The problem is, I'm not sure the best way to go about this: Should I team up the ports on the Cisco switch? Or should I have half my cameras use 10.110.100.x and the other have use 10.110.101.x? What do you guys think? Thanks for any advice you could give.

Hello, I have a (maybe) dumb question. I work at a local cafe and since workers were stealing money the boss decided to take a cut from everyone's paycheck. The place is completely surrounded by security cameras and there is a DVR which they are all connected to. The DVR is off (none of the LEDs are on), but cameras start flashing red LEDs when it's night time since they have night-vision. So does that mean that the cameras are on and DVR switched off? And does that also mean that the cameras are on and no one can stream them live and they can't record?

Hello Guys/Gals I need some troubleshooting help with my parents DVR occasionally skipping minutes in saved recordings. The DVR in question sadly is not a very high quality one, being a cheap Xiongmai DVR that came with a combo package of 4 cameras. What i have tried/Info I have tried 2 hard drives, a WD Purple 1TB specifically bought for it, and an old WD Blue 1TB, both of them still exhibited MAJOR responsiveness issues, although as expected the Blue was absolutely horrible to use. Reboot/reset/restart Checked connections (The cameras themselves appear to work fine, since in the TV preview they work completely smoothly.) Lowered the quality to its absolute minimum (helped with responsiveness, though still not ideal, and still sadly skipping) Streamed the cameras through RTSP via the DVR to my computer while stopping all recording on the DVR. (They work perfectly, and considering the DVR has to encode to send it over via RTSP it further seems like an Hard drive issue) So, my question is that could it be possible that an SSD might fix it? As it seems that the HDD is getting overwhelmed somehow and stops responding. An excerpt from the logs: 0842 2019-04-25 04:52:17 No Bitrate 2 (hdd_rec) 0843 2019-04-25 04:52:17 No Bitrate 3 (hdd_rec) 0844 2019-04-25 04:52:17 No Bitrate 4 (hdd_rec) 0845 2019-04-25 04:57:20 No Bitrate 1 (hdd_rec) 0846 2019-04-25 04:57:20 No Bitrate 2 (hdd_rec) 0847 2019-04-25 04:57:20 No Bitrate 3 (hdd_rec) 0848 2019-04-25 04:57:20 No Bitrate 4 (hdd_rec) 0849 2019-04-25 04:58:29 No Bitrate 1 (hdd_rec) 0850 2019-04-25 04:58:29 No Bitrate 2 (hdd_rec) 0851 2019-04-25 04:58:29 No Bitrate 3 (hdd_rec) 0852 2019-04-25 04:58:29 No Bitrate 4 (hdd_rec) 0853 2019-04-25 04:59:14 No Bitrate 1 (hdd_rec) Oh, and the DVR model number is A1004NS-C, Its an analog DVR with 4 BNC connectors to the cameras. If anyone has any idea what the hell is wrong with this thing id be very happy :) Thanks in advance for any responses :)

Hi there guys, I am currently looking for a cctv system for my home. There are so many in the market that it is difficult to choose. These are the features that I am looking for: 1) Easy to set up and install. If possible wireless. 2) Able to be accessed through the cloud. I don't really care if it stores the footage in the cloud, I just want to be able to see whats going on in the house from my phone/computer. 3) Has a pause function. The cloud access and pause function is extremely important for me. My clients often come to my house to discuss personal matters so it is very important to me that I can pause the CCTV to ensure confidentiality. By pause I mean have the CCTV stop recording everything, even the remote monitoring. Preferably this pause feature should be easy to access as well. I don't need sound recording, I don't need a high quality camera and I don't need a large storage because this system will mostly be used to check up on my grandmother who has vertigo as she sometimes falls and cannot get back up. Heck, I don't even need the CCTV to record anything. It will only be used for monitoring. Only 2-4 cameras are needed to cover the whole house. For the remote monitoring, I want to be able to give access to my siblings so then they can also check on my grandmother. Again, the pause function is very impotant and when it is on, remote monitoring and recording should be completely turned off. I know that this is a weird feature set to request but I'm sure someone here knows something. I am sorry if I sound like a total noob in this because I am. Thanks again for the help!

Hey guys, i have this project with CCTV camera to start recording only when movement appears. Its for home security and when i think about it maybe i could use a raspberry pi for it. But here comes the question for those who are experienced with Pi because im totaly new into it so it is possible to use raspberry pi for this type of function only? Because using an older laptop etc is more power demanding and not that great solution speaking of space/noise. And if somebody could talk with me about it, lead me and help me trought? I already tried google/youtube about connecting an cctv camera but everyone is using usb webcam not serious CCTV and because i already got a CCTV camera i need to stick with it. + I dont know if software for this type of cameras will be compatible with raspberry OS (i know i can install linux etc.). So is there somebody into it with good will to help ? Thank you guys!

Hi all, I am using a Hikvision security system model(DS-7604NI-E1 / 4P/A). I have been trying to get my device setup so I am able to view it over the internet but I am having no luck. I'm trying to run it through the ezviz website which I believe will allow me to gain access however my device always displays offline. I am able to ping the device from my router and login into it remotely over the local connection. I have attached a PDF file to show which settings I have chosen to configure my DVR with so if someone is able to see what I am doing wrong they can correct me to help fix this problem. Thanks Stealth Hikvision.pdf

Hi guys. I work for a small security company based in the UK and we monitor CCTV cameras for several companies. With the upcoming retirement of Windows 7 we are looking to upgrade our aging systems to something that will run our software better and smoother than what we are currently working with. We are currently running 3 computers each with AMD A8-3850 with Radeon HD graphics @ 2.90GHz, 16gb ram and twin ATI Radeon HD 5400 graphics cards. What we need is something that will run 5 monitors each and up to 100 CCTV displays per system. We use Qvis NVMS-1000, Hikvision IVMS4200, Zone alarm, a generic H.264 CMS software and Internet Explorer at present. Also on the subject of CCTV. We have 2 building sites and an additional 3 mobile CCTV vans that all run live stream via 3g data sims (4g in some areas where its available) and would like to find out the optimal camera resolution and bitrate settings that will give us uninterrupted live coverage without any data dropouts and save having to reset the camera devices every couple of hours while on shift. If anyone can help with pricing for a decent enough cheap system or if you can help with the data issues then all help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Would it be possible to upgrade my Swann DVR 4575 to the new 4580's firmware? Because I assume the hardware of both devices would be the same. Reason why is I want to be able to obtain the new google assistant features, and because Swann doesn't let you buy the DVR separately. Cheers.

They look bloody briliant, But on amazon they only see dome cameras and tiny ones that cant be outside. The question is what is the camera type below? Can you link me to a product page? or amazon link of it?

Budget (including currency): Country: Europe Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CCTV Viewing Client Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hi All, Long time lurker, first post. I am looking for advice on new workstation builds for work, the main use for these workstation is viewing and playback of CCTV. The system will be a viewing client for CCTV on 24/7, needs to be reliable and have remote management like vPro or IPMI. What my normal build looks like: i7 7700 16GB Ram 500GB OS drive NVME or Sata NVME I will take supermicro recommendations but really want to move away from them, nothing but problems the last year or so with boards failing and bad bios updates. Also any advice on NVME vs Sata SSDs for reliability? Thanks, Aaron
