I'm wondering, is CCleaner any good? Would it be worth downloading or are there better alternatives?
-
I've been using CCleaner for.. I honestly don't know how long for cleaning up temp files - I like it for that, never used the registry cleaner. I've been reading about it on the forums and have found some conflicting reports regarding it's safety, so this is why I am wondering if there are any better alternatives out there?

I have been searching for the best program to optimize my pc and clean it, as well for fixing some problems like registry files and etc. Until i came up with CCleaner, but i felt like its cleaning process is just like ""incredibly fast"" than any other programs, so does it really do the job accurately or its just assuming it. Plus if you got any better programs i would like to hear from you.

Might be a stupid question, especially since I've been using computers all my life and built my own computer. buuut, is there a way to make computer "new again" without having to do a fresh OS install? I use Ccleaner, Malwarebytes products, and I occasionally manually go through my Data folders and delete any unwanted programs. There is also defragging but I only have 1 HDD. The rest of my drives are SSDs. The reason why I don't want to do a fresh install is because I have almost 300 Steam games, 10 or so Origin Games, Uplay games, and 1 GOG game. Now, I know that most of those games especially steam games, don't need to be erased since they are on a separate drive than what my OS is installed on (OS is on m.2 and games are on HDD/SSDs) However, I do have a LOT of programs on my m.2 that would be an extreme pain to reacquire or download ect. Its mostly the programs on my m.2 that I don't want to stop working.. So any other tips for juicing up a computer without fresh OS install? i7 6700K Asus Hero VIII Zotac 980 ti Amp Extreme Corsair 32gb DDR4 Ram I have a beefy build but I have been using this computer for quite some time now and is obviously not running to its full potential. It also probably doesn't help that when I upgraded to Windows 10, I did the free upgrade and Not a fresh install. So any problems i might have had in Win 8.1 (classic shell) probably copied over to my now current win 10 build. Anyway, I'd appreciate any tips anyone has to offer.

Hackers have successfully breached CCleaner’s security to inject malware into the antivirus app and distribute it to millions of users. Security researchers at Cisco Talos discovered that download servers used by Avast (the company that owns CCleaner) were compromised to distribute malware inside CCleaner. “For a period of time, the legitimate signed version of CCleaner 5.33 being distributed by Avast also contained a multi-stage malware payload that rode on top of the installation of CCleaner,” says the Talos team. A lot of tech news outlets are offering simple(some nonsensical) descriptions, but the talos blog seems to be the true source of detailed information. They seem to have all the technical information which I haven't fully deciphered at the time of this post. Through what I've seen already things don't seem to add up. Does the hidden malware itself actually consist of a means to actually access an end users computer? It doesn't really seem feasible to me that this could be accomplished and to furthermore go unnoticed. I'm not sure what to think, especially when most of the dumbed down articles seem to be crying wolf by screaming BACKDOOR! RANSOMWARE! HACKERS! I still can't seem to determine if the malware is just collecting some lite system details and only the truly careless are effected or something much worse. Truly scary or blown out of proportion? Was cCleaner truly hacked or was this an inside job(quick big data grab)? Will The Verge ever produce any semblance of an article that's not complete garbage? http://blog.talosintelligence.com/2017/09/avast-distributes-malware.html

I recently installed a fresh copy of Windows and at a friend's suggestion I also installed Advanced SystemCare for its Speed Boost option in the hopes that it might squeeze slightly faster framerates from my outdated AMD FX-4300 CPU. I was genuinely surprised when I ran a full system scan and it claimed to have found 9,798 browser security issues and 292 registry errors (see attached). As I said, this was a fresh install of Windows. It only had a few applications and the latest Windows updates installed (Chrome, Firefox, AVG Free, Steam, CCleaner, Advanced SystemCare and a few mainstream games downloaded from Steam). Also, this was after I had just finished running CCleaner and fixed several registry errors that it claimed to have discovered. My theory is that most of these supposed optimizers and speed boosters aren't actually fixing much if anything at all and they are just a ploy to get you to install other bundled bloatware and malware. I did a search to see if I could find any benchmark tests on the various PC optimizers available but came up dry. What are your thoughts on this? Do you use third party optimizing software? If so, which ones and do they honestly make any kind of noticable difference in your computer's performance?

So I was just about to clean my PC with ccleaner and came across the registry part, I searched it on internet and saw it could make things a bit complicated for you and your pc. I never ran a registry clean, should I do it?

Hi everyone! Recently, after all that's been going on with Piriform (the acquisition by Avast, the malware and the telemetry), I've started considering if using CCleaner and Defraggler is still a good idea. Are there any alternatives, particularly ones that wouldn't be too difficult for me to set up on the family computers and teach my parents to use? Is the software provided by default in Windows 10 good enough to replace the aforementioned software?

I am having an issue with my CCleaner installs and wondering if anyone has encountered this as I have not seen anyone else complain of this from my research. As of a certain version number, I cannot remember which one, when I went to update CCLeaner I would download the latest version as usual, run it and after customising my install options I would click the button to start the update and the attached image is what would immediately occur. No progress, no options except close, it's not even just a graphical error as I have waited out the process for over 10 minutes with nothing doing. I have had zero issues doing the same thing on my laptop up to the present day. I have made sure to run as Admin just in case and the version I had installed still worked fine, I just can't update it. Around a month ago I uninstalled and tried to reinstall the latest version to see if a fresh install would fix this. It hasn't and therefore I now can't reinstall on this machine. Any help would be appreciated! I am on an Intel i7 6700K with a 4.4GHz OC but have been on that clock for months with no stability issues at all. I am running a 500Gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD as my boot drive, a 1Tb WD Black (probably) as long storage and recently added an Intel 660P M.2 NVME 1Tb SSD as game library but this issue persisted before I installed that. Cheers! Cameron

A lot of people talks about temp files are great to remove but some people did suffer from bad performance after they have deleted their temp files. Ccleaner does someway this job (maybe I am wrong) . Some people says that Ccleaner is really good and some says that isn't that good. I am confused , I seriously don't know a lot about these things and I don't know what is recommended to clean with that program because you can check/uncheck some things. Sorry if I have a bad english and thanks for the support.

Just something that caught my attention and doesn't make sense to me "Wipe Free Disk Space limitations CCleaner can't wipe every deleted file from your free disk space. There are some limitations, because of the way Windows stores some files. Here are some examples: The file has been overwritten by another file (so no need to overwrite this again) But it's not free disk space if it's in use?.. The file had been overwritten by another file before you ran CCleaner, but the second file has now been deleted as well. Can someone explain this? The file was created almost exactly when you ran CCleaner." Obviously...

As stated in my other thread, I've recently just upgraded my desktop from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10. I noticed that upon the initial boot into the OS after the successful upgrade I got a number of messages in the bottom-right of my screen telling me that X, Y and Z software was incompatible with Windows 10 and so had been removed. I remember one of these was Spybot: Search and Destroy which took me by surprise. Shortly afterwards my screen went black and did not return. I was still able to toggle the keyboard lights (eg Caps Lock), but I eventually decided that I had to restart the computer. Everything seems to be running fine now. However the Notification Center or Action Center (or whatever it's called) now doesn't tell me any of the programs that were uninstalled during the upgrade process. Using the search function it appears that AVG, CCleaner and Spybot have been removed, but Malwarebytes is still there. Think it's very odd that only the anti-virus software would have been removed out of everything, but then Malwarebytes was left installed so it's not like Windows 10 is anti virus-ist. I have no idea why it's removed things. I thought that there would have been some kind of indication or warning before things would have been removed. Normally I would have done a clean install so this wouldn't be an issue, but this time I decided not too and now I'm all puzzled with what's still here and what's not. Is there any way to find out which programs / software has been uninstalled and removed, without having to go through my Program Files / Start Menu one-by-one? I'm just curious really, and also want to know so that I can hopefully replace it with newer version of the software.

I tend to run a lot of Virus Scans(Probably between 3 and 6 a day), I use Malwarebytes and Avast for scanning btw and I have AVAST Actively monitor my pc as well. I have never had any issues with these programs and as of now, I have yet to get a serious infection on my PC. My main question is, can running this many AV scans hurt my OS or my PC at all. I also tend to use CCleaner at least a few times a day, Although when I use it, I dont clean everything, I particularily avoid windows files and the registry cleaner(which I have yet to use). Is there any danger in this either as far as harming my computer. Thanks In Advance!

So, I recently started using CCleaner again since I noticed a large decrease in disk storage. It did its job and cleaned up 15GBs. However, even after disabling settings including: "recent documents", “seesion (firefox)” and more, they were just ignored. So my question is this, does unchecking these options on CCleaner free do anything? Or am I disabling the wrong settings since now all my recent documents on MSoffice, file explorer are gone, and all active logings on firefox have logged out. Any ideas? Speccy is an awesome program made by the same dudes that made CCleaner. It spits out every single detail of your machine (Excluding sensitive info), and an awesome tool I love to use. You can also upload a "spreadsheet" of your PC to their servers (it's like a formatted pastebin), and share them with the world; so lets make a speccy thread! 1) Get Speccy [ http://www.piriform.com/speccy ] (It's free, the pro version does NOTHING special) 2) Run it, and after it's done collecting all of your rigs data, go to File -> "Publish Snapshot" 3) Done! Share the link with us and we will see what you guys are running Here is my rig: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/PUBtAWfJChPXS42NJadGgxd The ram settings are a bit off in the bios, but I'm too lazy to fix it. (They run at 1600) Note: I suggest using bit.ly or tinyurl since the link is long! Post your speccy results below! Its nice to see what you guys have, and for you to see what I ( and others ) have so we can help each other!
