  1. Hi so my problem is a pretty straight foward one. I have a patch pannel that is filled with cat6 keystones and right now im running entirely on cat5e. What im wondering is since im looking to upgrade to cat6a do I need to replace the keystones or can I still use the cat6? They are female to female keystones nothing fancy.
  2. Dear Linus Community I want to share the problem that I had and how I solved it. The reason why I'm doing it is because it was relatively tricky to diagnose and because just replacing some networking component does mask it so you may think that some equipment is faulty while it may very well be just fine (also the problem may present itself again in the future if misdiagnosed and misfixed). Background Story (you can safely skip this paragraph) I had a 10/100 network at home and after watching Linus videos about upgrading to 10Gb I decided to create a roadmap to slowly upgrade my network to 10Gb, my backup solution, and my security system. Thus I started the journey by replacing Cat5 and telephone cables with Cat6a shielded cables inside the walls and Cat6a sockets (yes I was running ethernet on 4 wires telephone cables). Then I replaced my 10 and 10/100 switches with 1Gb switches (10Gb is still too expensive for the amount of components that I am replacing). Then I replaced my NAS for a more performing one. And finally I started revamping my security system to have something well integrated with cameras on a separate subnet like the video from Level1tech. It was a this point that I started shuffling components around to place them in a better position and replacing long cat5 patch cables with homemade cat6a ones. While testing the new cables all kind of weird things started to happen. Symptoms of the problem All the equipments seemed to work just fine with industrial cables but not with the DIY ones. It took a long time to establish a link speed and IP and finally the link was 100Mbit In some occasions it would grab a 1Gb link but then moving the cable a little caused the link to drop to 100Mbit or to become inactive The link in some occasions started to quickly shuffle between active/inactive indefinitely or by dropping to 10Mbit after a long time. It seemed to be very inconsistent with some computers and switches jumping to 1Gb for several test in a row just to drop to 100Mbit or to inactive after trying long enough. A cable would work just fine before passing it behind a bookshelf but then would drop to 100Mbit or not work at all once in position. Then the same cable would work again if pulled out but then it started misbehaving even when on the floor. Solution Basically after I excluded interference from the AC lines, errors in the way i made the cables, broken equipment of cables, I was pulling my airs off and almost resulted in buying additional industrial cables of the required length. But then almost randomly I started comparing visually industrial cables and DIY ones with old and new plugs. I noticed that there was a piece of the shield of the socked that was curiously aligned with the exposed ends of the DIY passthrough plug that I chopped off. It was at that point that came the idea. Maybe the cables of the plug were shorting on the shield of the socket. Thus I put a piece of Insulating tape on the exposed wires and now everything works flawlessly. I wanted to share this experience so that it may help other people around. If you youse pass through plugs you may not have a broken cable in your hand, it may just be a short circuit between the plug and the socket. Cheers and have a good day.
  3. I'm planning to run a CAT6a Ethernet cable from my router to an Nvidia Shield, both located in different rooms that are quite far apart. At a guess, I think I would need a cable 30 to 40 meters long (depending on the path I choose) to connect them. Is this distance too long for running an Ethernet cable with any sort of repeater in between? What about a CAT5e cable? Is the cost of a CAT6a significantly higher than a CAT5e?
  4. I've got a Cat6a SOHO setup where I've individually tested: -All cables used (with cable tester): - - Cable from PC to wall outlet - - Cable from wall outlet to patch panel - - Cable from patch panel to switch - Running long cable from switch to PC (with a Cat5e cable) And yet when I connect my PC to the wall outlet it will temporarily say "identifying" and then disconnect again. So as far as I can see it seems like it "knows" it's there, but either something crashes or something is maybe configured wrong? Though I can't imagine what considering it seems fine when connecting Cat5e directly to the switch. Any ideas? EDIT: Nvm sorted it out, I had twisted the actual plate to visually sit the way I wanted. This caused the cables to get twisted which presumably caused interference. The wallplate looks upside down now but it works
  5. Hi all I have a couple of questions about my ubiquiti setup and about some SFP+ to RJ45 adapters. I wired my house for 10GbE (Cat6A) and for some of the devices I want to be able to utilize the full 10GbE connection. I recently bought a Ubiquiti USW-Aggregation which has 8x 10Gb SFP+ ports on it. I also have 2 other switches, a USW-Enterprise-8-PoE and a USW-Pro-24. My router is a UDM Pro. I plan to use the Switch Aggregation to connect the switches together as well as use 4 of the ports for computers I want to have 10G on and also one port for a NAS. My original plan was to aggregate 2x 10G SFP+ ports together to connect the other two switches together which would use up 4 of the ports, 2 10G links for each. The other 3 would be used for desktops around the house and the last one as I said would be used for the NAS. Is there any reason the Dream Machine Pro would need to be connected through 10G rather than just 1G? My internet connection is only 1G so the only reason I could see the need for 10G would be for the NVR access to the drive in the Dream Machine Pro but I doubt you'd need 10G for a mechanical HDD. Let me know if I'm wrong My other question was about these 10Gb SFP+ to RJ45 adapters. I need these to connect a few desktops to my Ubiquiti Switch Aggregation. Is there any difference between these? Are any brands better than others? FS.com option 1 Amazon option 2 Amazon option 3 Amazon option 4 There's also this "Industrial" one from FS.com. Thanks for anyones input!
  6. Hello, I have some questions about networking and using hdmi 2.0 over ethernet (cat 6a or cat7). I want to have all my devices (Sky+ box, PS4 Pro, Xbox one S and Apple TV) all connected to the network switch so in theory we would be able to watch the same TV show in the lounge; the master bedroom and the kitchen but having the ability for one person be able to switch to the PS4 independently. If possible i’d like to do this with 4k signals rather then just 1080p. This is for our newly built house, we want almost every room to have internet over Ethernet. In the TV rooms we plan to have Ethernet to hdmi converters which terminate in the wall. Every cable will be ran Independently and connect to a netgear switch. This is the list of products we will be using: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00H2ETA1M?ref=emc_b_5_t https://www.amazon.co.uk/Duronic-CAT6a-Professional-Shielded-Network/dp/B003CL71II/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484256177&sr=8-3&keywords=cat6a+cable
  7. For over a year I have been using CAT7 S/FTP in my home and every time when I run a new cable I wonder.. Does it really matter what type connector I use? I got Draka cat7 cable because I wanted to be future prove “better do it right the first time”. While the cable was easy to get, the LSA / RJ45 connectors just weren’t there. So I used CAT6a LSA wall outlets / patch panels and CAT5e RJ45 connectors. Even now it´s hard to find CAT7 rated products, and if you find them the price knocks you over. It gives me the feeling that the “right connector, keystone” doesn’t matter that much. And that it might be possible to get my 10GBe speed (best case) on a CAT7 cable equipped with CAT5e connectors. I would love to test this case, but I don’t own a 10GBe network (yet), so help me out guys. Does it really matter, and if yes, how much does it matter?
  8. What happens if I use a Cat6a cables on a gigabit switch? will it bottleneck on the switch? can you recommend me on an unmanaged 24 port switch that supports cat6a?
  9. So I have my server in my attic and modem and router there too. All the networking goes there from every room. It's all cat5e to the rooms except for my room and my office (one has work PC and other my gaming PC) which is cat6a. I use the gigabit ports on the Mobo to the 24 port 10gigabit switch which it 10gig copper. But my transfer speed to the server is maxed at 10 megabytes per second (100 megabits per second). My servers Mobo has a 100megabit port so I need a NIC that's rj45 and capable of 10 gigabit or at the very least 5 gigabit using LAG from a 5 port NIC. On top of all that I don't trust the cables I bought on Amazon or at Staples and I want to know what brand is the best and where to get good cat7 and cat6a so I can redo the house with cat6a and my room and office with cat7. I know it's over kill but come on.... Who wouldn't do it if they could
  10. I have a modem in my bedroom and I want to connect it to my PC 2 rooms apart. I was wondering if using an ethernet cable to a router and then to my PC would be any slower than connecting the cable directly to my PC as I want to have wifi in that room as it does not reach. Would it even work?
  11. Just some data I have spanning all the way back to 9/9/2017 at 4:54PM. Page 5 has a graph and as you can see I've been working on making it more detailed (See page 1 and the table on the right). All testing was done as follows. Connection: Cat6a 5ft Modem: NetGear CM1000 Router: NetGear R6250 (Not used for 90% of the tests. 90% of tests where done wired to modem. ALL TESTS WHERE DONE WIRED. Only 10% of tests had something in between client and modem.) ISP: xFinity from Comcast Location: Exeter, NH Speeds Paid For: "Gigabit Internet Tier" all advertisements say "Gigabit" but when you buy it and look under MY ACCOUNT>Devices>Scroll to the bottom>Read the words "Internet Plan:(insert your plan)" and "Internet Tier Download Speed: 986.5Mbps Upload Speed: 35Mbps(Numbers listed is for the plan "Gigabit" Computer: CPU:R7 1700x GPU1:980ti GPU2:1060 6gb RAM:16gb DDR4 2866 14-14-14-30 MOBO: MSI SLI PLUS x370 C:/Drive: 120gb 850 evo Site for testing: speedtest.net Link to Published Spread Sheet (Should be self updating as I add data): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vT-NJaPGqkS0EnqY3RJudEsgsOIK-tVr-O2jne7HYZNu1I4crN0SXNtX1NJcm4ky1ixuj_oeOWecTU_/pubhtml Attached is a copy of the spread sheet (less up to date as I need to update manually) Please share this with everyone you can. I've be working hard on this, using my time to collect and assemble this data. Any feedback is welcome along with ideas and suggestions. I hope you all find this helpful and meaning full in some way, cause I have. I've been using it to talk with Comcast on fixing the issue. NetGear and my self have both concluded that the issue is not on my end (Found issue in the bonded channels so Comcast came and thought replacing the coax fittings inside my house would help. It didn't I posted the before and after of that below.) and that the issue is either the cable from the street to my home or the cable from my street to the ISP. Either way its really annoying paying for "Gigabit" and getting served a speed that is so much slower you could fit a few different combinations of all their slower packages in the gap between my speed and the speed I pay for, not to mention the inconsistency in the speed. These test have been run at all hours of the day/night and it doesn't seem to be affected by high traffic hours. Anyway I will probably tweet this at Comcast and see what they think. 12. I'm building a new network demanding building. Should I use cat6 or cat7 as networking, and if I have the money should I put cat7a and is it backwards compatible?
  13. Hello, I have two question but for the same project. The first is is there a switch that has just one CAT6a port for 10 GB/S speeds but all the rest just normal GB/S. Also is there a correct way to run underground Ethernet. This is for an outdoor office and so the CAT6a 100M capabilities are required. Thank-You.
