  1. Hi guys so I just upgraded to virgin media’s 1GB speeds and I’m not able to get the most out of it with WiFi. My house electricity runs on 2 circuits so power line in my room with my pc gets under 100mbps speed which is a lot of drop off. I was looking into hard wiring Ethernet and wondered if it would be worth it. From my router to my room would be around 30m of cat6 cable. Would this be an okay distance without seeing major drop off in speeds? Or would I need like an enhancer of some sort I’m not too knowledgeable in networking.
  2. hey, i have a question about the connecters for cat6 cables. my house is wired with cat6, but i need to put on the rj45 connecters on the ends with my crimp tool. I was woundering if I NEED CAT6 Connecters, or if rj45 connecters are all the same, and the only thing speed wise for cat6 is the cable its self. Lmk Thanks #LLT
  3. Hi everyone! I hope everyone is healthy and distancing. I would like to hard wire network my home. I have been looking into this for years at this point, but I think possibly by this winter I want to pull the trigger and do it, so I have a lot of time between now and then to buy what I need. I live in southern Texas, so doing it now is out of the question do to the heat in my attic. I'd like to run my cables through my attic and down my walls to my PC, my sons PC, my NAS, Nvidia shield, apple TV, PS4, Xbox One, and wireless router. I am fairly new to networking apart from setting up my wifi routers, and a switch confuses me, I don't understand what it means when its said that the switch creates networks and the router connects the different networks. Question #1 Do I go from modem, to router, to switch or from modem, to switch, to router? I have seen both suggested. Question #2 What is a good switch to get? I'd like at least gigabit, I would say 10 gigabit but I don't think any items on my network have a 10 gigabit connection. Question #3 Is there even a point to 10 gigabit? Would that allow items to connect to my internet better or just to each other better? I know from LTT's video "Home 10 Gig Network Upgrade for CHEAP" that 10 gigabit is somewhat affordable, albeit not cheap. Would having that "room to breathe" in network allow better net connection? I am getting gigabit speed from ISP, so I know that having a 10 gigabit network won't magically give me a 10 gigabit internet connection(that would be awesome though). Question #4 What is a good switch to get? I was looking at some Linksys ones, since that is what I have usually had for routers, and current router is a Linksys(Max-Stream AC5400), but I just want a good one. Question #5 I can afford Cat8 cable from pricing I have found, and I'd like to future proof this network, so is there a reason to not get Cat8? Question #6 My modem is a Arris Surfboard SB8200 and I am paying for gigabit from my ISP(Grande), can anyone tell me why when I connect my PC directly to the modem I get basically the full gigabit but when my PC is connected through router, which is all on same desk my speeds are usually 300mbps or less.
  4. For over a year I have been using CAT7 S/FTP in my home and every time when I run a new cable I wonder.. Does it really matter what type connector I use? I got Draka cat7 cable because I wanted to be future prove “better do it right the first time”. While the cable was easy to get, the LSA / RJ45 connectors just weren’t there. So I used CAT6a LSA wall outlets / patch panels and CAT5e RJ45 connectors. Even now it´s hard to find CAT7 rated products, and if you find them the price knocks you over. It gives me the feeling that the “right connector, keystone” doesn’t matter that much. And that it might be possible to get my 10GBe speed (best case) on a CAT7 cable equipped with CAT5e connectors. I would love to test this case, but I don’t own a 10GBe network (yet), so help me out guys. Does it really matter, and if yes, how much does it matter?
  5. So just recently I have been struggling with my internet acting up. Essentially, it will appear that my cable is unplugging itself off and on and I can hardly use my internet on the PC. I do not have a wifi card to test if it is only the cable acting up. IF that is the case, what type of cable would you prefer and the most rugged to be routed partially outside the house? If it is neither of those, help me find out if it is bandwidth restrictions or poor internet. I highly doubt it is poor internet as it has never had these problems before. Please let me know what y'all think!
  6. i have gigabit internet but when i run internet tests i only get 100-110 down 10 up. in games im hitting around 30 ping. im using a cat6 cable. how can i achieve better speeds?
  7. I recently upgraded my glassfiber subscription from 100/100Mb/s to 200/200Mb/s (only cost me 0.50 a month more because of a sale). The thing is, my desktop pc doesn't reach over 100/100. It's at the end of a 30 meter cat5e cable to the wall, which is connected to the pc via cat6. Theoretically it should support up to 1000Mb/s but it does't go over 95Mb/s. Connecting my laptop to the wifi does give me about 180-190 upload and download however. Does anyone know why this is happening and how i can fix it?
  8. I dare say this has already been asked on the forum and I do apologize for re asking it if it already has. But in the off chance it hasn't how's this for a overly complex and most likely not financially viable idea. 1 server that does all your PC's in your house. And I'm not talking in the same room or remoting into the machine. I'm talking is there a way to pass optical and say 2 USB data transmions through a dedicated lam cable to another room where it would have a hub that reverts it back to HDMI and USB? I'm assuming you would saturate cat6 trying to do so wouldn't you and wouldn't that latency make it ungamable . For certain things such as photo and video editing remoting into a machine would be ok but for gaming thays just not quite going to cut it. As my house sits at the moment I live with my parents and my sister and my girlfriend. I have my central server running unraid for Plex, run my Nas, security backup, and have my virtual machines set up. My girlfriend likes to do lots of photo editing on her tablet on the sofa but it only has a celeron CPU so she just remotes into her machine to edit. My father likes to do drone video editing and he just has a i3 laptop so he just remotes into his seperate machine to edit . My sister attends high school so she remotes in to her machine to go around the schools security. And for me and my sister boyfriend we have a machine we just use for steam to stream our games so we can play AAA titles on out laptops. Just wondering if there is a way to do away with my gaming desktop and just move to one environment. Sincerely your residential Australian Jordan.
  9. Hi, Just wanting to get some confirmation wheather anyone else can't securely lock in there ethernet cable (Cat6) to the ethernet port of there Nvidia shield. The nvidia shield detects it but its can easily be pulled out. Is this a know issue or is my nvidia shield broken? Cheers
  10. When setting up an office network. The previous tenants already had this what I assume would be a patch panel. I only actually need the reception and wifi access point set up but I figured since I can have others rooms wired why not. What do I actually need to get up and going? (ie switch and an access point for wifi ? ) This is currently what I am looking at for purchased products to get it up and going. https://www.primecables.ca/p-346578-tl-sf1008p-tp-link-tl-sf1008p-8-port-10100mbps-desktop-switch-with-4-port-poe https://www.primecables.ca/p-350440-cab-eap110-tp-link-eap110-300mbps-wireless-n-ceiling-mount-access-point I've attached a photo of the patch panel? How do I confirm what type of cables are being used? (cat5 or 6) And any advice of what type of cables I should use going forward. Cheers again
  11. I Just finished building my home, and thanks to some advice, i've run 2 cat6 cables to every room, terminating at a single location. My goal is to have a fast connection between anything on the network and great wifi reception throughout the home. As well as beaming wifi with one of those ubiquity antennas to a shack about 500-800 ft in front of the house. So far, i know i need a Modem, Switch, Routers, Wifi access points, the wifi antennas. Am i missing anything? Is there any brands you guys recommend? I've been reading up on networking for the last 6 months but theory and practice are very different. Any advice you can give me would be welcome! (Attached is a professional mock-up of the whole shindig, please refer to this.) Thanks so much!
  12. Ik finally ready to setup networking right at new house and realy don't want to use WiFi if possible. I sometimes hate my self because of that Is there any real reason to use FTP CAT6 instead of UTP if network cables will run outside wall and no way near 220 power lines. Only 3-5 meters will be two network cables next to each other. With network cables I will connect 2 computers 1 tv Freenas sever In total about 40-50 meters of cable. And about Modular plugs. I'm only seen cat6 plugs for UTP cables but does it mater?
  13. Hi, Just enquiring about extending a USB cable through a CAT6 cable in my ceiling which is roughly 10-15 meters (including height of walls) into my living room from my office. Because at the moment I'm currently got a HDMI CAT6 Extender (http://www.jaycar.com.au/Sight-%26-Sound---Home/AV-Switchers-%26-Converters/Switchers/HDMI-Over-2-x-Cat5e-6---30m-with-IR-Extender/p/AC1730) up an running but unfortunately my Logitech wireless keyboard an mouse cant make the distance. The keyboard and mouse use the same wireless USB doggle which I want to put into the my living room to be able to use it. So my question are: 1. Will a my wireless keyboard & mouse doggle work well, over this distance? 2. Is their a better option or method to extend a usb cable? Any other thoughts and feedback would be great. Cheers.
  14. Im having one small problem, basically i have a 8port netgear gs308 switch pluged into my router. off that im trying to connect a cat 6a cable but its not running at gigabit. my cat 5e cables are working fine on that switch and the cat6a cable is working gigabit when pluged into my router. Does my gigabit switches not support gigabit speeds on cat6a.
  15. Greetings! I currently own a ASUS VI Hero with an Intel I217v NIC. I've read some topics, forums and articles about how much sensitive this NIC is, because I have some issues with it too. 1., it's not a big deal, but my SSD is faster than my network, so after my programs loaded (almost immediately), my network is still searching for connection, and I could use my PC, but because of the network I have to wait another 4-5 secs before browsing. My old H81M-A never did this, and clean win. reinstall didn't solved it either, so yes, it's NIC/RoG specific issue, appears on 7 and 8.1 too 2., which seems to be a bigger problem: if I select auto or 100Mbps full duplex, I have no problems, but when I switch to gigabit, I have no network at all (which also wasn't problem on H81M-A) So back to the beginning. I read some articles and find out, that this NIC is very sensitive to UTP cables, most of the time that causes these issues on this chip. We have a 200/50 connection, so I don't need better than CAT5e, CAT6 would be an overkill - and don't think that this mobo also wants that either-, and I don't need a cable over 1m (3.2 feet), even its half could be enough. I accept the fact, that I have old UTP cables, don't know how old they are, but 5 years at min., so maybe it's time to get a pair of new ones. And the obvious (thread-opening) question is: Which one? Is there a real difference between a cheap and an expensive one? Yes, the isolation. But anything else? In my country (and my favourite shop) there are the following brands (/w prices): 1. Logilink - 1.5$ 2. Wiretek - 1.5-1.6$ 3. Belkin - 4$ 4. Roline - 4.5$ 5. Equip / Intellinet - 5.5$ 6. Startech - ~10$ I thought that these are made from the same matter, so I don't know if I really should spend 5 times more on a small cable like this, but those topics and articles fickled me more than enough, to come here and ask for your thoughts. The truth is, I don't really trust in a cheap cable like 1.5$, but if it's doing its job, then okay, sure, why not. But if I buy the Belkin, is there any chance that I'm going to make a better choice with it?
  16. Hello, First time poster, was looking for ideas or to see if the builder has the right one. I'm getting a house built and having some Cat6 cabling done in wall to all bedrooms and 2 lines run to each of the living room/family room. It will be 7 runs total. The idea we had was install 1 outlet in the living room next to where the cable company will install the media gateway ( it's rather large and most likely will need to stay in the living room ) Connect from my router to the socket in the wall and run that cable back with the other 7 lines to a central spot ( which isn't so central, will be in the master bedroom closet, which has the most available space ) I'll have an 8 port switch in the closet and from there will run the 7 lines to the spots that were chosen. I really don't feel like I need a patch panel or will need to expand this set up. The run from the living room to the switch will be about 60', then from the switch to the other drops will be anywhere from 60' to 100'. ( accounting for the cable going up the the roof and back down again , single level house ) Does this idea seem okay? Or are any of the runs to long. I wish there was a more central location to install the switch, but the prints for everything else have already been done. There is a closet slightly closer to the living room, but it seems like it will be stuffy and cramped. I would like to keep the switch/cables out of the living room. Thanks
  17. I'm facing a dilemma for networking, I am moving my computer and desk to a different location in the house where there is no coaxial port for the modem. Normally my router is right near my rig and I can just use Lan. I would just use a really long Ethernet wire from the router to my computer but my mom doesn't like wires all over the house. So I discover a coaxial hole thing on the other end of the room so I can put my modem and router in but theres no signal. So my parents decided to ask Shaw to drill some holes in the wall and connect some coaxial from the cable box in the garage. But I read online that lengthy coaxial causes loss of signal. I am not willing to sacrifice my connection cause I game so I might just beg my parents to allow an ethernet across the house. But before I do, is Ethernet even better than Coaxial? lawl thx for reading this long half good explanation of the problem
  18. Hey, i built my pc last November and ever since i have had bad internet. originally i thought it was my isp but i was using a pci wireless card so a couple of months ago i thought that i would buy some cat6 cable and i still had over 300 ping so then i though i would by a new nic (thinking it was my on board Ethernet) and i found a Bigfoot killer m1 nic on eBay for £18. so i picked it up and it was delivered yesterday and i found a drivers online but it made me blue screen whilst restarting but after pressing reset button my ping dropped to 30 whilst plugged into motherboard Ethernet! then later that night whilst turning my pc off it blue screened. Then, this afternoon i turned on my pc and i checked my ping on spedtest.net and it was 250 again! Soi tried reinstalling the drivers and my pc blue screened whilst rebooting again but my ping dropped to 15! but i thought that i would restart my computer again to just check and i did and my ping is now over 250 and i need help i can't do this every time i want to play on my pc. Please help
  19. Hello everybody, I'm new to the forums but like many of you, I've been following Linus and his crew for the past couple years. Anyhow, I do have a few questions regarding setting up a 10gbit network. My first question would be, should I go with Cat6A or fiber? I was leaning towards CAT6A since the runs won't be long, in fact, they pretty much won't be leaving a single room. I will only need to connect a few (3-4 machines) together to aid in large file transfers. The machines I would be looking at getting hooked up would be: - Custom built server (x58 platform, this is the primary machine all the others will be accessing, it also has a Drobo for backup connected via eSATA on a PCI-Express card) - Mac Pro (2009 model) - iMac (2011 model, likely will have to connect with a thunderbolt to some PCI-Express converter) - Custom built "gaming" machine that will be turning into a workstation soon Here's my rationale: In my spare time, I'm a photographer and often do video work so my files can get HUGE (we're talking in the hundreds of gigabytes). Backing up or working off of a server over gigabit is starting to tax my network really hard when working with RAW image files, and especially with Uncompressed ProRes footage. If one machine is sending data or performing a backup to the server, and another is also trying to send data or even receive data, there are major slow downs, and this seems to be primarily a network bottleneck since the server's CPU is generally under 10% utilization, disk utilization is around 15-20% but the network is showing 700-900mbit/s+ going in either direction. So I'm wondering if anybody has had any experience in setting this kind of a network up. I'm probably going to need about 4 10gbit network cards, CAT6A cabling, and a 10gbit switch, right? Would there be any benefit in using fiber in this kind of environment (scalability, latency, etc)? My house is already wired for gigabit with CAT5e in every room, and I haven't had any real issues anywhere else so I'm leaving everything else alone. Thank you all so much in advance for not only reading my novel but for any advice! -- Bryan
  20. Hi guys, I recently purchased a networking cable kit from Monoprice. The crimper doesn't push the 1 & 8 pin down correctly. This is the first low quality thing I've purchased from them interestingly, while the rest of the kit (cable tester, wire trimmer, etc) are all pretty good. I need a good recommendation for an RJ45 crimper. I don't care about RJ11, so having it would be irrelevant to me. Max price is $100. Thanks, Vitalius.
  21. Can this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Snagless-Ethernet-Patch/product-reviews/B00B3URY64/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=recent be used to connect my pc to the modem to get internet? like will a patch not work for that or what? cause i just ordered it.
  22. Recently I replaced some CAT6 cable with some CAT5E due to the CAT6 being far too long to fit inside some trunking. I was under the impression that the difference in speeds between CAT5E and CAT6 should only matter for local network speeds. However as soon as I plugged in the CAT5E cable from my router to my PC, I did a speedtest and my download speed was dramaticlly reduced. Normally on CAT6 I get my full speed of 220 Mbps but on CAT5E I get around 60 Mbps. I tested it muliple times as well with consistent results. The CAT5E was cut to length and crimped by someone at my dads work (they often run ethernet cables for large buildings) and he said it could be that the crimping wasn't done properly or something. Does this sound normal for CAT5E, are there other factors at work here, or could it be that the cable wasn't crimped properly? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
  23. Hi, Just enquirying about if coax has a higher transfer speed for extending my hdmi signal from my pc without lagg/stuttering at 60hz. Ive tried cat6 extenders but had horrible lagg when playing games and even navigation on my desktop. Cheers.
  24. I recently moved into a new place and started studying at a University. The place has some really nice internet speeds. When checking the network speed through the adapter settings in the Windows Control Panel the connection shows up as 1gbps which is great. Once I test the connection through speedtest.net I get the typical 100mbps test which is just 2-5% below 100mbps. I've tried running directly from the modem to the PC and from the router to the PC but still the same results. I'm using a Cat 6 cable and my mobo is the MSI Z370-A Pro. The mobo runs this network controller http://bit.ly/2LKrIfX Thanks for any help because I sure could use it.
  25. Hi, everyone! I use a PowerLine in my home to connect my laptop via ethernet, so I have better internet, lower ping, etc. I was thinking of buying cat6 cables to replace the ones it came with, which are cat5, not even cat5e. They can still handle a 1Gbps connection because they're really short, but still, I'd prefer having cat6 just to be sure I'll never have a problem with bandwidth. The thing is, I was looking for cables and came across different types, such as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) and FTP (Foiled-screen Twisted Pair), and googled it to find that the UTP have no "insulation" to interference and the FTP ones have. But since I'm using PowerLine, wouldn't it be worthless to get the FTP ones since part of the circuit is through the house's electric wiring, which, I'm pretty sure have a lot of interference? Thanks in advance!
