  1. Hello, So I've been wracking my brain for the past few hours trying to figure this one out. For context: I was previously running my PC using 2x8gb sticks of RAM in my MOBO (MSI B85-G43 Gaming). As this was my first build, I stupidly added another single stick of 4gb RAM to my system at a later date, as I was given it by a friend - I thought nothing of it at the time. Years pass. Only now, since my PC has started running more slowly, I have been looking into new parts and refreshing myself on hardware that I discovered that for all this time my RAM would have been matching the speed of the slowest stick (4gb). So, I purchased 2 x 8gb sticks of RAM this week, the exact same as the originals (Kingston Hyper X Fury DDR3 1866MHZ) to solve this issue, in the attempt to speed up my system and give it more longevity. Before replacing, I checked the performance of the RAM: the system was only detecting 12gb of DDR3. With only 7.9gb available. Awful. This morning, I took out the 4gb stick and replaced with the new sticks. Which I thought would solve my issue, but has actually caused more problems than to begin with. Once I completed the installation, the computer booted. And I went from having the aforementioned 12gb of available RAM to 16gb available. To clarify, this should be 32gb available. As I now have 4x8gb DDR3 Kingston Hyper X Fury. Confused, I started with some software fix attempts. Starting with MSCONFIG, Advanced options, and attempted to increased the bandwidth of the RAM. This failed, and would only go as high as 16gb in total. Following that, I attempted some hardware problem solving. So I removed some sticks - trying to figure out whether the new RAM I had purchased was actually faulty. Then my PC stopped booting. I restored the BIOS to factory settings, but this didn't solve anything. At this point, I just wanted to diagnose as to whether there was a faulty stick of RAM, so I tried all of the different combinations to see if the RAM or the port was faulty. None of those were true. Each RAM and slot work, as they appear in my bios board explorer. I also checked under the OC section on the bios and they're all appearing in the correct DIMM1-4 slots. However, here they also only show up as 888hz each - which would explain why the total is maxing out at 16gb. I fixed the boot error, by installing wiping my OC and installing a new version, keeping my files. But removing apps and settings. As this was the only fix I could find. (This was a separate issue I encountered for the day. Nightmare. But solved now at least) This leaves me with one question: how the hell am I supposed to get these sticks running at the correct speed/capacity then? So, here are the solutions I have tried so far. Software: - double checked I am running a 64 version of windows, and that my MOBO is capable of 32gb RAM. Both of these are correct. - tried running msconfig and expanding bandwidth. BIOS: - I have searched high and low for the XMP option. Not Available. - In the OC settings, I changed DRAM frequency to DDR3-1600mhz (the highest option). No luck. - Tried to find the setting for memory remapping. Still no luck. Hardware: - I reset the CMOS on the MOBO with a screwdriver and the two pins on the instruction manual. I feel like I'm running out of options, but I'm worried there's probably an easy fix that I'm overlooking. Would be great to keep my trusty first build running for as long as possible. I'm worried that installing that slow 4gb stick all that time ago has caused a change in the system of some sort, which is why they're all appearing as 4gb instead of 8. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  2. From the album: My Build, the beginnings

This is my storage setup. Very ghetto. Eventually, I will be seating it (all drives) with 3M double sided sticky tape somewhere. Preferably to the floor of the case. Still not sure. Maybe on the Motherboard Tray.

  3. Asrock z390 Steel Legend. So the specs say it can handle 128gb ram, this is important to me, I serve an ARK:SO game cluster. I have shifted all 4 sticks around, it seems to randomly assign 2/3 - 16gb sticks as 8gb. Overall I have 3 - 16gb (corsair vengeance ddr4- 2666 *hynix*, all same model#) and 1 - 32gb stick same specs except Micro-something controller sticks. They all worked perfectly fine in my z370 Asrock Killer before I upgraded. If I place 1 - 16gb stick in A2 it will only display 8gb. If I put it all in the board will see 2 -8gb, 1 -32 and 1 -16 to equal no more than 64gb. I've updated the bios, updated all board firmware. I have an i9-9900KF CPU. I have placed them in my wife's computer and they are recognized just fine. I even mixed them with her 3200 sticks and it just dropped the speeds to the lower but gave the correct capacities. I was up till 3am fighting with this. Any advice is welcome. I'm happy to clarify or add information.
  4. What am I doing? I run some small minecraft servers, mostly modded ones for my housemates and a couple of friends. I just tried to make a Enigmatica 6 server as it looks real rad, we've had some fun playing Tekkit Classic, Agrarian Skies and Skyfactory, but Enigmatica is where things have got sketchy... In the future, I'd like to mess around with making some larger servers, mainly for the tech exposure/fun rather than trying to make a profit, that's really not the kind of thing I want to get into. What am I doing it on? Currently I'm running a Mac Pro 1,1 with 2x Intel X5355s @2.66Ghz, 32GB RAM and an old intel SATA 2 SSD. This is running Ubuntu 20.04 - I don't think this is quite going to keep me going anymore, the single core performance of my CPU coupled with the slow RAM speed just isn't up to scratch for what Minecraft servers demand these days, and whilst having dual CPUs is nice, without significant work to hack Java into working multithreadedly (from what I can tell at least), Minecraft servers just don't take advantage of them. So that got me thinking... There are servers out there with huge player numbers, (3,000+). Most if not all must achieve this by sharding their worlds off with Bungee or something similar right? (Genuine assumption, I haven't researched enough yet). Saying this, some servers still manage to achieve 250-300+ players in the same active world, and this is where I'm stumped. When you take into account plugins, mods and all the other nuanced pieces that allow a server to grow that popular, what kind of tech stack is running behind it to keep it going? Is it just as simple as overclocking a top end CPU for the single core performance? I don't see that being likely for significantly high player numbers... Which brings me on to... What is the theoretical upper limit for max players without dropping TPS? Expense, mods, plugins etc aside, if you had mega bucks to throw at a build to get the maximum number of players in a single world playing seamlessly with one another, what would you buy and why? TL;DR: I want to make a better dedicated server in the short term to make modpack servers for my housemates. How do? I want to theorycraft about how you'd make superservers where you don't have to shard players into separate worlds for it to run... How do? Thanks for reading my shi**ty post! Forefallen
  5. Recently I bought a 256GB SanDisk USB for $30USD(on sale) and naturally the first thing i did was to plug it into the nearest computer to verify the capacity. To my shock all i had was 232GB! 24GB lost to ...what? Naturally, i contacted the seller and asked him wtf was going on? and he told me this from what i can understand the seller is saying the USB reserves a little space for itself. The 32GB memory card example makes a lot of sense except why is THERE 24 GIGS MISSING? A USB doesn't NEED 24 GIGS right??? Then he Sent me a link to this calculator thingy that's supposed to tell you how much capacity you would ACTUALLY have http://www.endmemo.com/data/diskcapacity.php Is this normal? Should i get a Refund? i would like your opinion
  6. I am looking to add some form of storage for videos that I record of gameplays. I don't know what I need in all honesty. I've only ever used SSDs and HDDs around 2tb to 4tb. I was hoping for something higher, but there are so many options and I have no idea which ones are actually good. I plan on recording gameplay in 4k at 60fps or higher(if possible). I've looked into RAID setups but I don't know if that is what I need or if that is for something completely different. I'm not *too* concerned about price, but I would like to try to keep it under the $500 mark if possible. What should I be looking for? Speed? Read and write times? How many times it can be written to? Should I have several different storage devices? Should I look for internal or external drives? I am lost in a sea of options! I appreciate everyone's future help on this! Below, I've provided the current specs of my PC in case that's important or helpful to get better results from you guys! I currently have the ASUS Z690 Hero, and have one sata SSD (for OS), two 2tb 990 pros for games and apps. I believe the case has room for three or four internal HDDs. My power supply (if this is important) is 1000W 80+Titanium from beQUIET. I have 64gb crucial ddr5 and currently running a 3070 (waiting for my 4090 to come in) and an Intel i9 13900k.
  7. Is it better to have 64 GB 2666 MHz, or 32 GB 3200 MHz RAM?
  8. A friend of mine has a weird zfs setup that he'd like fixed... Elementary OS RaidZ1 4tb 4tb 4tb 4tb (2x2tb HW RAID) My question is, can I fail out the 2x2TB one and rebuild with a proper 4tb drive in it's place without any data loss?
  9. My current external HDD is a 1TB WD Elements, and I've used up 750+GB of its storage with media, and I'll have to get a new one. The laptop I'll be using for the next four years will have 512GB of storage, with no plans of expanding it yet, as I'll store media (videos, photos, footage) on my external HDD as always. I plan to repurpose my current 1TB HDD to a backup drive for my laptop. However, since I'm running out of space, I've got to get a bigger one, but having all my stuff on one drive again brings up reliability concerns. Should I get- 1x4 TB drive for all my mass storage, and not back it up. 2x2 TB drives- for mass storage and a complete clone of the mass storage drive. Probably in RAID 1 if my laptop can do it. In either case, I'll dump the stuff from my current 1TB WD drive and use that for backing up my laptop drive. What do you think? Are modern external HDDs reliable enough for me not to have to worry about this? Or should I always get two drives? Mass storage and mass storage clone? A 1x4 TB drive will cost me $115 and get me twice as much storage overall. 2x2 TB drives will cost me $140 and get me half as much storage but exponentially improved reliability.
  10. I have a fanless Seasonic 400 W Platinum PSU. I'd like to know if I can safely add a reference GTX 1080 card ( 180W ). Current components are : - Asus Z97I-PLUS Mini-ITX motherboard - 88W Core i7-4970K processor without overclock - samsung 840 evo 500 GB SSD - 8 GB RAM Thanks!
  11. Hello guys, please help me getting back missing 35GB of drive capacity. The drive is Samsung 950 pro M.2 512 GB. What happened: I've installed Windows 10 x64 on my new machine, everything worked fine, 512.11 GB was available. formatted the whole disk (not a big issue), but I got error message like that: Device says hardware cluster size is 2048 Kbyte, but driver says it's 512 I went ahead and installed Ubuntu, then figured out something's wrong with the disk capacity. Wiped disk again and reinstalled Windows 10 on another ssd in the machine, and got only 477 of 512 GB available on the M.2 disk. Disk management doesn't show any unallocated space. Samsung Magician shows only 477 of 512 GB available, even after two attempts of factory reset. Tried formatting using HDD Low Level Format Tool - both quick and full with no effect on capacity. Tried manipulating disk using Gparted from live USB and MiniTool Partition Wizard with no results. As I can see, now disk cluster size is 512 Kbyte. Tried issuing a ticket with Samsung support and called the hotline with no positive results: they told me that it's because the manufacturer calculates capacity using 1000 bytes per Megabyte, not 1024 (guess that indicates level of knowledge and helpfulness). I've attached system report exported from Samsung Magician and screenshot showing available capacity as well. Please help, I'm completely lost! error950pro.csv
  12. A simple question, what is the largest capacity that good old non-ECC DDR1 RAM came in? I recently got a Windows XP machine and want to see how far I can take it.
  13. hello everyone, i have a lenovo y500 and i have a 256gb samsung Msata ssd and i want to buy a hdd for secondary storage, is it worth it to buy an sshd if i already have a 1TB 7200rpm hdd laying around in great health ? any and all opinions are more than appreciated, thank you all
  14. **UPDATE** The issue is not as it seemed at first. It appears that the disk is indeed nearly full, and the discrepancy is a result of Windows failing to include all files in its calculation of the disks capacity. For example the first folder "Active Projects" in the drive Active Projects shows as being around 200gb, but just one of its subfolders has over 2TB of media. I'm now trying to figure out why Windows is drastically underreporting the amount of data in some folders. Here is the original post: I'm a video editor, and my system has a boot drive and 3 others for media and backups. These 3 drives are: Active Projects (2x HGST 3TB NAS HDDs in an OWC Mercury Electra Pro Dual, hardware RAID 0, 5.28TB NTFS formatted capacity, USB3.1) Scratch (1TB HGST HDD, NTFS, internal SATA3) Backups (8TB Seagate HDD, NTFS, USB3) Active Projects currently has 1.7TB of data stored on it, but Windows reports that it only has 177GB free. There is one hidden file (sync.ffs_db which is used for my backup system FreeFileSync, less than 1MB) and nothing in the recycle bin. Windows thinks there are 5.28TB of files on Active Projects alone, but the total capacity used by Backups (which contains Active Projects, Scratch, and my boot drive) is only 3.74TB. Adding up the sizes of the projects saved on Active Projects and Backups, there is absolutely no way I have over 5TB of media on Active Projects. I have attached many screenshots for your reference, and would be happy to provide any other information to diagnose this. Any idea how to correct this, ideally without reformatting the RAID?
  15. Intro I was looking for a high capacity powerbank 30000+ mAh, I realised that all powerbanks from reputable companys (anker, ...) all max out at ~25000 mAh. Looking at less reputable sellers I found some large powerbanks for a super low price. However, looking at the advertising for them, it advertises a low amount of charges, wich would equal more or less 10000-25000 mAh. List I found these powerbanks that looked (partially) legit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0897HHRR3 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000574931415.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000958856013.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001143233173.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001139059008.html Help needed I have no experience buying powerbanks, I am looking for someone who went trough this already or someone who knows about this. ps: I need this powerbank for camping about 10 days, with multiple poeple. There are no poweroutlets nearby. Conclusion I put this here so you don't have to look trough all the comments. Why the ~25000 mAh limit? - Airplane travel limits. Are these real? - Some of them, the romoss one is legit but should be bought from a more reputable store. What should you buy? - Below I made a little list A - Portable generator - Large groups using multiple recharable devices. - 500+W - Requires Fuel Source - 150+€ B - Portable solar panel - Medium group using recharable devices. - 16-28W per array - Requires Sunlight - 30-100€ C - Large power bank - Small group using recharable devices. - ~18W 40000mAh - Requires charge before use - 30-150€ D - Medium power bank - Small group using recharable devices travelling airborne. - ~20W ~26000mAh - Requires charge before use - 30-60€ What is your profile picture? - It's a cat, and the round thing is the nose, I used to draw this all the time in my textbooks, it's real easy to draw. Huge thanks to Moonzy & Origami Cactus for answering!
  16. I HAVE A 8GB DDR4 RAM AND I'M PLANNING TO BUY ANOTHER 4GB. WILL IT RUN ON DUAL CHANNEL IF I INSTALL 2 RAMS IN A DUAL CHANNEL RAM SLOT? IF IT'S NOT THEN WHAT'S THE DOWN SIDE OF IT? *I'm using a b360 motherboard
  17. hi guys, i looked around but couldn't find any topics describing this exact thing. if there is something please point me to it. thanks. so what i'm having trouble understanding why the following is happening. I have 2 identical external HDD drives. both from the same manufacturer. Same capacity, same model etc. One is for storage, the second one is just a backup of the first one. so i just basically copied over everything using windows explorer copy / paste . nothing fancy. every time I add something to the original drive, i add the same thing to the backup drive as well. put it in the same location within a folder etc. etc. now the weird part is that windows is showing me different remaining capacities on these 2 drives even though they have the same files etc. as described. any ideas? thanks
  18. I was doing a search in google for the largest Mirco sd card and found a 1 tb has anyone heard of this or tried this ? Would you trust this to work and last ? the link is below https://www.ebay.ca/i/263425187497?chn=ps&dispItem=1
  19. Hey guys, I have what I believe is a dumb question but I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have an MSI laptop with a 128 GB SSD that I want to upgrade to a 512 GB one. Thing is the OS is installed in this drive and I want to know if I just have to replace the ssd and the bios will automatically have the windows 10 key for the installation and I just need the ISO (or not even that) or if it is more complicated than that. I have 1TB HDD too.
  20. Hi, I've got a HP P400i Controller in my server. Here's the specification: https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04111741.pdf?ver=3 It's clearly written that it's capable up to 2TB per SATA drive. Does that mean that I can populate all 6 slots with 2TB SATA drives and all will be recognized correctly?
  21. Hi, I recently received my new Samsung 250GB SSD which I purchased on Black Friday sales. I was running low on my main C drive which is also a 250GB SSD, but only with 8GB left, so this upgrade was very much needed. Sadly I can't get around the point of expanding my C drive. I thought it was simple enough to go into Computer Management > Disk Management and do few tweaks to expand my SSD. But I'm unable to do so as the options are greyed out. Anyway, I've done digging around to come to the conclusion of using Raid 0. I started by going to Windows Storage Space and went through the process of setting it up. Later on, I decide to copy a 2GB file to the desktop only to receive a popup message telling me that I don't have enough capacity on the desktop for this file. In Storage Space, it says that it adds more drives (More space I assume) if I run low on capacity. So..I'm a bit lost of that part. Did I choose wrong settings or what? I'm mainly focused on storage space than performance, so should I just remove programs that are filling up my main SSD and place it onto my new SSD and call it a day? Or...? Thanks in advance btw. *Edit* I suppose I could also change the directory of where my programs get installed but having the ability to place files on the desktop no matter how big is handy.
  22. Can anyone find me a link for the largest 1.8 inch hard drive? I've searched around for a while and the largest I found was a 250gb made by Toshiba for a whopping $200. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAR43ZX1948) Now my Lenovo x300 doesn't support 2.5 inch drives so any links to those won't work. As I don't currently have the money for a better laptop a very expensive hard drive won't help either. So the goal here is the biggest and least expensive hard drive (under $100??).
  23. So I've upgraded to a Sandisk X400 512GB SSD recently and i've noticed that the capacity is a bit weird. It's advertised as 512GB, but after format and everything, I only have 476GB usable. I know there's the 500mb system reserved, and that a formatted drive has less capacity than advertised, but isn't 36GB missing a bit too much? and when i check it in device manager, it's reporting the drive as 488GB. whereas disk management reports it as 476GB (there's a 13GB delta??) Basically i'm asking if this is normal, since it's my first time using an SSD, I want to make sure I didn't get a defect product. and if someone can explain where the 36GB went, that'd be great.
  24. If you have ever formatted a USB flash drive to install windows on a new rig, the Media Creation Tool will format your drive to a proprietary format, that makes the drive have a maximum capacity of 32GB. When you decide to revert the USB flash drive back to NTFS, You will only be able to select 32GB of capacity. If you used a drive with any capacity over 32GB, the original storage space will be inaccessible. To repair your drive, follow these instructions. 1. press Winkey+R. 2. type "cmd" and press Enter. 3. type "diskpart.exe" in cmd and press Enter. *accept the popup, new window opens. 4. in this window, type "list disk" and press Enter. *Find your disk, this is usually "disk 1". 5. type "select 1" and press Enter. *before continuing, be sure the drive does not have any wanted files! 6. type "clean" and press Enter. this will wipe the drive of partitions and files. 7. type "create partition primary" and press Enter. 8. type "list disk" and press Enter. You should see that disk 1 now has the original capacity. *Now that you have recovered your USB flash drive capacity, you will have to re-format the drive. 9. type "format fs:NTFS quick" and press Enter. *wait for this process to be completed. after this is complete, you can close the command prompts. Your drive is now repaired, and ready to be used as normal.
