On August 21st at 8AM PDT, Intel will officially announce their Intel CoffeeLake cpus. While the press and consumers are looking at this new cpu, for their next builds or other mobile devices, Intel has already started on its successor. The successor to CoffeeLake will be CannonLake. Intel CannonLake was supposed to be released a few years ago, but it was pushed back. There was even a demo laptop running Intel CannonLake during CES 2017. Intel CannonLake will bring the manufacturing process from 14nm on CoffeeLake down to 10nm. Both Intel CoffeeLake and Intel CannonLake will be their 8th generation processors. What that means is, we will have 8th Gen CoffeeLake at 14nm and 8th Gen CannonLake at 10nm. The successor to CannonLake, will be Intel IceLake, this will be manufacture on the 10nm+ and will be Intel's 9th generation processor. Hi, I am willing to buy a new pc soon for an upgrade to my current system which is 6 years old. What I am looking for specifically is getting the least out of the hardware to achieve max performance for all new and even slightly old titles. Currently, 7700K takes the lead of having higest frame rates on games, and that's after Intel's new launch today for coffee lake. My thoughts are; Should I buy 7700K or wait for cannonlake's launch (I don't mind waiting at all) because they might get 4 cores back for hardcore gaming and performance can be higher. I feel like buying 7700K now is a waste because it's came in last year, and since then Intel had no improvements whatsoever, just tiny tweaks and basically a better version of the last one. What do you think?

Hey guys, from next month I will start saving £400 a month, I will save for 10 months to get a cool gaming pc, the best i've gamed was a PS2 or an AMD laptop that run csgo all ultra low at 3-20fps (Toshiba Satellite Some numbers-10V) In your opinion how will it feel gaming with a Volta GPU and cannonalake as my first gaming pc?

I'm thinking of buying a desktop gaming PC with whiskey lake and RTX coming up. But then again, I'm reading about cannonlake aming for 10nm and 7nm GPUs being on the up and coming. Do people have any ideas about how big the leap in performance will be, just based on the change in architecture? Any reason to wait for the new standard? I'm kinda torn, because I could use a desktop PC (only have a low performing gaming laptop) and it is always something new coming, but it seems kinda sad to buy new gear right before a big leap (if that is what it is). Any thoughts?

I read somewhere that they were planning on using the same socket type as coffeelake for cannonlake. Is this true or just conjecture? I can't find any solid information on this unless I missed it. I want to know as I'm planning on upgrading my platform and it wouldn't be worth it to me if there's no upgrade path in the future. I want to get on 10 nanometer as soon as it becomes available so I'll wait if it's going to use a different socket. Thanks.

Hello, I currently have an i3 6100. I lately have thought about upgrading to a hexacore processor. I want to know just how much longer my current CPU could last since I currently 45-70 fps on new AAA games which don't necessarily bother me too much. While I could get a ryzen/coffee lake CPU right now, I would prefer to wait and get a cannonlake/zen 2 CPU and get much more use out of my current CPU.

Perhaps Intel wants to beat AMD to the punch, kinda like what Nvidia did with the 980ti vs Fury X. It looks like Cannonlake will also be coming a year later. These are still only rumors though, so take everything with a grain of salt until either Intel announces when they will release or when they release Kaby Lake and Cannonlake.

For awhile now, I've been looking to build a PC. Really, ever since I started looking to build it, I've been looking at Skylake Core i5s. They were quite new at the time, and I had thought I had nearly finalized my build, until just now, after a quick Google search, I found out that Intel's Kaby Lake CPUs are coming out this July, and Cannonlake even later this year. It pains me to think that after all these months of research, as soon as July, I would I would be stuck with an outdated CPU architecture, and potentially a motherboard that wouldn't be compatible with future CPUs. The point I'm getting at, is it worth it to wait, and will the motherboard socket change?

They recently posted a job listing that stated 10nm production would start in two years. Even in best case scenarios this would suggest intel is pretty behind. Perhaps something will follow Kaby Lake before cannonlake, making it a tick tick tick tock cycle. Tsmc is supposed to start 7nm in 2018, which would put them ahead of intel. This would also put amd zen on a more level playing field, as zen is on 14 nm and so would be competing with 14nm parts instead of 10nm ones. This could really play to amds advantage. Also kudos to myself for typing this all out on a phone lol. I don't have my computer with me right now so had to do it all on this. Hello gentlemen/nerds of Linus Tech Tips. I've been thinking about upgrading lately, and since my base system is over 4 years old (2011) the reasons for waiting are getting smaller and smaller, so I thought I would ask you (most likely more experienced) PC builders out there on what your thoughts are. My system I have at the moment is based on the Sandy Bridge CPU which I bought back in 2011, my specs are: Intel i5 2500K @ 4.5 Ghz (Bought 2011) with a Corsair H70 MSI Z77A-G43 Motherboard (Bought 2014, my old Asus P8P67 Pro died in early 2014, and I had to find a replacement). 16 GB (4x4) DDR3 (1600Mhz) RAM, (2x HyperX and 2x Corsair Vengeance) Evga GTX 970 SC (Purchased early 2015, replaced my old GTX 590 - Planning on keeping this until I upgrade to 4K/1440p) SDDs: Old 2011 Crucial 64 GB SSD (Still used today as my OS Drive), a not-to-expensive 240GB Kingston SSD for steam games HDDs: Old 2007 WD Raptor drive (10K RPM) at 74 GB that I still use for programs, and 2 old 1 TB drives I use as storage bought also around 2007/8 that I used in my previous system before this. Corsair TX850 Watt PSU Antec 900 Case Random Bluray Drive 2x BenQ 24'' cheapo 1080p screens 1x BenQ 24'' XL2410T 120Hz screen (my main gaming monitor) I saw Linus' review of the skylake (or was it Lukes?) and I think he recommended that it could be time for an upgrade if you have a Sandy bridge CPU or older model due to the skylake being 30% (I think it was 30%, I'll find the video later if needed) better overall. I've clunged on to mine this long because it still works fine for my use so far (games like csgo, basic editing, little bit of streaming) but it's been freaking 4 years now since I first bought the heart of my system, and I do not want it to suddenly go old and be unable to handle the future, like gaming at 4K, using the Oculus Rift adequately etc. etc.. Whatever happens I am not planning to pull my old PC apart to use for my new system, mostly because some of the items are from 2006 and I plan on building a complete new system, so maybe the title of this topic is a bit wrong... Then I can retire this PC as a backup system/server of some sorts. I might steal the 240GB SSD but that's about it. I already got a fair bit of money saved up for my upcoming PC (Ca 14ishK USD next month, been saving up for 6ish months) and on my wishlist so far is a PCI-E NVME based SSD (512GB+ maybe) a regular HDD for storage (or turn my old system into a NAS), G-Sync Monitor, 4-Core (or greater ) CPU (Maybe cannonlake will introduce cheaper 6-Core/8-Core Enthusiast grade CPUs) +++ So I come to ask you guys the main question of this topic. Should I start planning to upgrade my computer now? Like try to get a skylake based system, or should I just wait until next year for coby lake or even futher (late 2017) for cannonlake? My hands are itching to buy something which compelled me to make this topic (I cannot control what they do sometimes lol). TLDR: Want to upgrade my daily-driver PC which I have had since 2011 (except for a few parts listed above), not sure if it is worth it yet, need opinions.

Cannonlake has been delayed to an unknown date, so another line on 14 nm processors are coming, named Kaby Lake. Honestly, Intel's naming scheme is just wow, surprises every time. :lol: Kaby Lake will be compatible with 100 series chipset that Skylake will use.

So I saw the last live stream and Linus said that Skylake wouldn't support ddr4 (unless I heard wrong, but I'm pretty sure he said this.), but Skylake is supposed to support ddr4 and ddr3 memory but not both at the same time like 1 ddr4 stick and 1 ddr3 stick. Sooo did linus make a mistake or did I miss some info some where?
