  1. Budget (including currency): as affordable as possible Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I wanted to make use of it by testing a whole bunch of Linux distros on a dedicated hardware and use a dedicated PC to compile stuff without needing to sacrifice my current gaming PC. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): * CPU: AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor (Purchased For $0.00) * CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (Purchased For $0.00) * Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (Purchased For $0.00) * Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1866 CL8 Memory (Purchased For $0.00) * Storage: Crucial MX500 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $0.00) * Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 8 GB Vapor-X Video Card (Purchased For $0.00) Before you suggest I return these or something, I got all these for free from a relative. Perfectly aware how hot this can be, but I'm planning on undervolting (and maybe underclock) to control the heat.
  2. I just ordered an FX-8370 and Hyper 212 Black Edition for my first PC build, but I’ve heard a lot about the FX-8370 running very hot, and I just wanted to make sure my Hyper 212 will be enough to cool it? If not I can resort to ordering a Rosewill PB240. Keep in mind this is my first ever PC build so I’m not completely acquainted with this hardware yet. (FYI: I have 3 120mm case fans as well)
  3. So... I'm sure we've all heard it and seen it, AMD has released Ryzen, with the bios updates and what-not it's actually not too terrible at gaming. Still not as good as a 7700k last I saw but it's pretty decent now, I believe the 1500x sits somewhere between the 7600 and 7700. I'm kind of on a bit of a budget, so I'm contemplating replacing my FX 8320 with 16GB of DDR3 1600Mhz ram with 16GB 2400Mhz DDR4 and a 1500/1600. Problem is I don't really see anything really anywhere comparing the FX 8350 to anything other than the 1800X. What're your thoughts on this whole situation, do you think it's worth replacing my FX 8320 and stepping out of the stone age? Really all I do is gaming and drawing on my PC. Any input would be interesting to see. Many thanks - Nis
  4. So what im talking about really isnt easy to explain with the title but i shall explain on that now. I was thinking of the failure of Bulldozer architecture which was similar to the Netburst architecture utter flop in which Intel believed they could get 10ghz on their then new Prescott p4 however it only managed 3.8ghz and is still to this day regarded as one of Intel's biggest fails and the death of the single core processor era. Now to my question: lets just imagine Intel by some miracle managed to get the Prescott P4 to 10ghz and we benched that would that mean that it would peg level with a 2.5 ghz quad core which is almost what the Q6600 was stock. Am i totally wrong or would a single core at 4 times the speed of a 2.5ghz quad core (10ghz/2.5ghz=quadcore) level peg with the before mentioned 2.5ghz quad core. This probably sounds like such a stupid question but i'm genuinely not sure. I'm just going totally imaginary on this I'm well aware the P4 @ 10ghz would literally melt the entire polar ice cap)
  5. Would i lose in any aspect if i change to the Ryzen R5 1600x from my current FX 8350, since the FX is an OCTA Core and the 1600x has 6 cores, would i come out losing performance in any way, or is it just a simple good upgrade ? im trying to come up with the answer myself, but i havent been able to come to a solid conclusion, so im asking. EDIT: maybe it should be obvious to me that theres no question, the upgrade is absolutely worth it, but no, i am not that sure to the point of buying it withou asking first.
  6. Hey guys (and girls of course!), I want your opinion... Please don't troll or fight over this, it is a genuine question I have. I searched the Internet for answers on this but no one seems to agree on this... With the launch of RyZen, most previous gen CPUs have gone down in price. I actually run a 1100t 3.3GHz (3.7 boost) 6 cores Thuban processor and it is super solid and fast enough for my current and probably near future needs. My RAM is Corsair 4 x 4Gb, (total 16Gb) clocked at 1600MHz... Max that CPU can take at stock speeds from what I know The FX-8370 has lowered in price to around 180 $ Canadian... This CPU is a "low" TDP 8 cores that clocks at 4GHz (4,3 boost) They are both 125W TDP CPUs but appart from raw speed, would there be other avantages to upgrade to such a CPU? Does it have future proofing technologies that the Thuban does not? Also, would upgrading to 1866MHz RAM make a real difference? (BTW, board can take it, Gigabyte 990-FXA-UD7 rev.1) Lastly, is it better to run 4 x 4Gb RAM or 2x 8Gb ? (About same price) I am NOT an overclocker, so please don't suggest I beat the $h!t out of my current CPU My wallet and my obligations can't allow more than 200$ CAD of upgrades, so RyZen is out of reach for me My usage is...well... atypical ! I main Linux Ubuntu for my normal day-to-day computing (photo editing, video editing, internet, anything casual) The system barely even "works" to drive these kinds of tasks... Often staying at 600MHz per core and ramping up to 3,7Ghz when rendering. I also experiment with VMs and parallel encoding, for fun! That drives it a little harder. I am also experimenting with 3D CAD (freeCAD) and will likely have to learn SolidWorks for my job. I also use Windows 7 for my job when I work at home as the VPN we have is restricting usage of Unix-type systems (Mac or Linux included) Tried for a long time to make it work but I ended-up dual booting to windows. This Windows session is also used for gaming... I am not a gamer per say... Just casual Overwatch and Bioshock player. So my rig is more about work and rendering so stability is the key here. Summary: Q1: Is the upgrade to FX-5370 worth something? does this CPU have a feature or code-set that my old one does not that could be a show-stopper? Q2: Is upgrading DDR3 RAM from 1600MHz to 1866MHz worth it? Would I see a "world of difference" ? Q3: If I upgrade RAM, is 4 x 4Gb or 2 x 8Gb recommended? (I want a total of 16Gb) Details of my setup: MB: 990-FXA-UD7 rev 1.0 CPU: AMD 1100t black edition RAM: Corsair DDR3 at 1600Mhz, 4 x 4Gb GPU: Sapphire RadeonHD 7970 Dual X (3Gb) LSI MegaRAID server class RAID controller 240Gb RAID 5 SSD ARRAY as main drive (blazing fast!) 240Gb RAID 1 SSD ARRAY for rendering output NAS and USB drives for long term storage, around 5Tb total Thanks guys!
  7. Source: Tom's Hardware Source 2: The Register Update (Aug 28, 2019): Source 3: AnandTech PDF of lawsuit agreement: https://regmedia.co.uk/2019/08/27/amd-eight-core-settlement.pdf I think this would be a reasonable payout since it has been 8 years since the first Bulldozer CPU came out. The lawsuit itself regarding the marketing of the CPU cores mainly in the FX 8xxx lineup of having 8-cores I believe is kind of a false advertisement; it would be like buying a really nice car that featured air conditioning but you can not use it when the car is moving. I still have my FX-8350 and it runs pretty okay, but performance is not really great for the amount of heat generated and power consumed. With Ryzen, it seems AMD changed their way of marketing without trying to really say anything that would comeback and hit them.
  8. Hi I saw, that Linus again tried to play with 2X 4C Yorkfield platform and that got me thinking. I know, that you can get AMD Opteron 6276 (16C Bulldozer 2.3GHz) for around 15-20 US bucks, Opteron 6376 (16C Piledriver 2.3GHz) for 20-25 bucks, or from the Intel side, X7550 (8C Nehalem EX 2GHz) for laughable 4 bucks and E7-2850 (10C Westmere EX 2GHz) for around 15-20 buck, if you got good deal. I played with these platforms long ago, but I dont have any by me now. Does somebody still use them? Even today I use my trusty old dual X5670 for my server and they are good enough. What about this big hi-end grade grandpa's in today's workload in perspective to power/watt and cost of the whole system. I would love to hear any echo on that! Thank you for reading
  9. Hello! I currently have a FX-6300 processor with an ASRock 970 EXTREME4 motherboard, both dead, and I wanted to upgrade to a RYZEN processor. Will I have to reinstall all my programs and operating system? Or can I just plug my old drive and pick up where I left? Here’s what’s on my shopping list: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071CZ1SKZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oGTTAbS01PFAT https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0123ZB990/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3GTTAbSM4P2HB Also, I want to know if they would be suitable for some medium gaming, photo editing and light video editing. I have a GTX 950 Feel free to suggest something cheaper, that DDR4 RAM is quite expensive. I chose it red so it matches the motherboard, even though I have a white NZXT Phantom 530
  10. I am having trouble requesting an AMD bootkit for my Ryzen 3 2200g can someone help me request one step by step as I find the website for AMD confusing.
  11. Hi all, I am new to this forum but been a linus follower since a while just wanted to show off my rig (wich i love hehe), I first built it 7 years ago and still runs ok for my usage. Also, wanted to know some suggestion to upgrade or so, because the graphics card is a little old (7 years hehe) and its not fully capable for 2018's tasks and programs. Also, there has been a little problem since I ever built it, which after a while running (playing games or 3D modelling) the screen just freezes and a buzzing sound comes out from the speakers. It is certainly annoying because I cant play without thinking that in some time, the pc will just freeze... I think its the Graphics card as it is the only device I havent touch of the whole system. So, here are the rig specs hope you can help me out... I am trying to buy a nvidia gtx670 for upgrade as the games i play are mostly old and some emulators. 12. So, i was overclocking my new CPU because i was getting lag spikes in CoD Black Ops 1, so not much of a heavy game. I wanted to try and fix this via overclock, but then when i went to make sure my overclock was stable, I ran cinebench and opened the Task Manager and noticed for the first 5 seconds of running cinebench my CPU Utilization uses 100% then goes as low as 16% and bounces up and down. It also dropped the frequency to around 1.5 and maxes out at 3.67
  13. Till how much i can overclock this badboy ? Can i atlest push it to 4.2ghz ?
  14. Not sure that this belongs here, maybe it should be in software. Move if necessary. I recently heard from a friend (who is usually quite reliable) that Prime95 is not appropriate for stress testing AMD FX Bulldozer CPUs. I'm fairly sure that Prime95 is good for testing AMD FX processors, but I would like a second opinion here. Also, would OCCT be a good alternative? Thanks in advance
  15. Hey, I have an Athlon II X3 440 CPU which I could really do with ditching and upgrading. My question is that if I get a motherboard compatible with the FX-8350, will it be compatible with my current Athlon II until I can afford the FX? Post on behalf of a friend.
  16. Hello everyone, just stuck in a little quibble. I currently have FX-6100 CPU and obviously an am3+ motherboard (gigabyte GA-970a-UD3 revision 1.2) also a 280x and I got some cash flow at the moment. I am stuck with the decision of buying a FX-8350, new CPU cooler maybe from Noctua, and a 1080p monitor or if i should get a z87 motherboard, an i5-4670k, CPU cooler, and a monitor. Dunno which one to go with. Budget wise it's like on $550 dollars. It's okay to go above that but not too much. I'm mainly curious to whether the 4670k has a "major" performance boost over the 8350 in gaming that would be noticeable. ex.Battlefield 4, HAWKEN, Star-craft 2, in the future WatchDogs, The Division, and all that type of stuff. Just wondering what any of you would do in me shoes.
  17. Chinese sources have indicated that AMD has been working on an all new from the ground-up high-performance core for two years now led by Jim Keller the engineer behind the original Athlon XP & Athlon 64. This new architecture is supposedly going back to AMD's traditional multi-core approach with no modularity or resource sharing. The new core is set to follow Excavator which will be released next year. Sources : 1 2 3 UPDATE : The Chinese sources unanimously referenced "wall street" as their source, conveniently an interview with AMD's CEO Rory Read has just been published on WSJ. Interestingly enough AMD's (and Intel's) high performance cores are always designed for servers. Both Bulldozer & Piledriver were engineered specifically with servers in mind. So it seems AMD's CEO has inadvertently reaffirmed the rumors floating around. UPDATE 2 : This has been officially confirmed and is no longer a rumor. AMD is working on a new "from scratch" x86 high performance core along with a "sister" ARM core dubbed K12. Jim Keller talking about K12 and "next-gen" x86 core @ AMD's Core Innovation Summit May 2014. You can watch the full one and a half hour event here.
  18. So, I'm checking Facebook every few days just to see what stuff got posted on other people's walls and the fanpages I follow, and I see this: http://www.facebook.com/AMDGaming/posts/529565517115940 I was like: "What." Never followed AMDFX twitter account, but I decided to check it out. And boy, are they mad? Spamming 23rd September date like crazy? So i go around and find this: Now... You can see for yourself: https://twitter.com/AMDFX/status/380724896910680064 https://twitter.com/AMDFX/status/381040297238487040 https://twitter.com/AMDFX 23rd September. Sounds familiar? Sure, it's very close to 25th September when a conference in Hawaii will be held, announcing the new Radeon. There's one problem. 23rd September =/= 25th September. I might be mad, and please ignore this whole thread if you want, but could it mean that 23rd September AMD will announce something special for the fans of their CPU division? Steamroller for desktops roadmap, perhaps? Or... Kavieri 'official release'? Thanks for reading! Comment and discuss!
  19. Terve! My situation is eventually a little confusign, but I'll do my best to explain it to you. I do run a work-PC that has an AMD FX8150 on a Crosshair V Formula Z. This Mainboard alredy died twice, but now I am confused. I wanted to re-overclock this thing (just got it back from the 2nd RMA), because the CPU was alredy running at over 4.9GHz in the past - though there was high voltage included. Now, the system freezes fast after starting intel burn test, when I am on 4.3 GHz (haven't tried lower things yet). Can someone give me an advice what I did wrong? I'll post the pics of the BIOS, so you can imagine. Tell me, if you need more. Thanks already. Sayonara! P.S. one of the pics displayed an error while uploading, I'll redo it and upload it then.
  20. Linus was talking about a system that NCIX never sold a single unit of on last night's WAN Show. It was front paged on Youtube and has ~500,000 views. I believe that this is it. Important Specs: FX 8150 Crosshair V Asus Radeon 6970 DC Corsair AX850 Crucial M4 Corsair Obsidian 650D Ahhh.... Bulldozer.... How no one misses you....
  21. So this is my rig, It's getting pretty old with parts and isn't a great performer in gaming at all. Here are the specs Case: Zalman Z11 Plus Motherboard: MSI 970A-G45 CPU: FX-4100 @4.1GHZ CPU Cooler: Coolermaster 612pwm GPU: Asus 6770 Ram: 8gb Kingston 1333mhz PSU: Coolermaster Mpower 600W HDD: Seagate barricuda 750gb SSD: 64Gb Adata SP900 OS: Win 7 Professional 64 bit I have an msi z77-g45 motherboard that is 1155 ivy bridge ready, and my plan is to get a 3570k, much better ram with a heatspreader, and a 760.
  22. I read a couple of guides online and decided to try my hand at overclocking my CPU. I only have a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo, so I decided I would only attempt a modest overclock to start. I disabled Cool n quiet mode, enabled CPU unlock and set the ratio limit(CPB ratio) to 22. I then increased the multiplier from 20 to 21. I rebooted and ran Prime95 for 10 minutes with no errors, and my CPU temps stayed around 41C. I noticed in CPU-Z the multiplier was reading as 20.5 instead of 21 as I had set it. But ignoring this, I increased the multiplier to 21.5 and tried again. While running Prime95, my temps never exceeded 40C and I could see the load was constant 100% on all cores. I noticed the multiplier was flicking between 21.5 and 17 although the load was always at 100%. After about 2 minutes, Prime95 crashed. I started it again and within a minute the whole machine crashed. Here is a picture of my settings: http://imgur.com/dKv2zWY I'm pretty sure I should be stable at just 4.3GHz without touching voltage or anything, and my temps aren't even going high. What should I do? By the way, mobo is a GA 990FXA-UD3 Rev 4
  23. Hey guys, I've recently decided to build my second rig, and i'm waiting for all the Intel/Nvidida/AMD parts come out. I've learnt many things through watching videos on the net about Processors, Mobos etc etc.. I currently have running in my rig: -AMD Bulldozer FX6100 (3.3GHz-3.9GHz) -ASUS M5A97 (Revision 1) -Corsair Vengeance LP RAM 2x4GB (1332MHz - Fails to boot out of BIOS after manually switching to 1600MHz, and Auto selects 1332MHz. Bonus Question if you can find out why it does this) -AMD Radeon Sapphire HD7850 2GB -Creative Soundblaster Recon 3D -Western Digital 500GB Main HDD -Corsair CX750M PSU My main question is; I've searched over google already (i'm pretty independent in my learning) to find out (just out of interest) how many PCI expansions my processor can do (may not be correct termonology). I've done example searches for Intels i7 3770k, and that clearly states in what form the PCI-E speeds run at. When I look for my AMD version of this "PCI expansion configurations" I fail to find anything. So what is my PCI expansion possibilities All i've been able to find out is something about AM3+ bottlenecking with high-end graphics cards... though no specific details were given. Advanced thanks for reading/answering iWearKiltz
