Welcome to the LTT build off thread! (Revived) Make sure to follow this topic for updates! Since the last one is considered dead(inactive), me(@Bubblewhale), @ddbtkd456,@Vegetable decided to restart it up. Rules are similar to the last build off thread. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/35226-the-ltt-build-off-thread-no-building-required/ But we decided to change the rules a bit. A contest will be held once every 2 weeks. Note that you DO NOT post your entries in this thread, you post them on the contest thread. Current Contest: Best price to performance under 1000USD. Including peripherals like KB and Mouse. No OS and monitor/display needed. At the moment, you can go and create your build now. Link right here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/441046-build-off-contest-1august-september-2015/ Rules: 1: Using PCPartPicker for the build list. 2: All prices are in USD unless in different currency in thread. 3: You may only submit one build per user per contest. 4: Not really necessary but you can explain why you choice those parts for your submission. 5: You are allowed to change your part list until the voting has started. You are disqualified from the current contest if you change your part list after voting has started. 6: Peripherals are usually required in the budget, unless not stated in the contest. You would need KB and Mouse, Audio. You don't need a display/monitor unless it's stated in the contest. 7: A OS is not required unless it's mentioned in the contest. 8: Custom parts are allowed in the build, but that doesn't guarantee that you'll win. Custom WC or special case parts/mods are example of custom parts but they have to be purchasable at the time that your posting the build. 9: You must stay in budget, if the build is over budget by one cent then it is disqualified. 10. Builds must include all the normal things. CPU, cooling for CPU, Motherboard, RAM, Storage, Graphics card, PSU, Case and the peripherals. Voting: 1: On Friday evening(PST), I will edit in a poll in the contest thread and add in all the submitted builds that meet all the contest requirements and posted at that moment. Any builds that are posted after the poll in added in is disqualified. 2: Voting will be close on Friday evening next week. 3: You have a week to vote. 4: You cannot vote for yourself, if you are voting for yourself then you are disqualified. (Poll is public) 5: If there is a tie then the judges will select the winner. Prizes: @ddbtkd456 has offered to become the Prize manager for the build offs. The winner can get a choice from 20 USD Steam, Amazon, or Paypal(unknown at the moment). Prizes will be offered at the end of the month or the beginning of the month. How to enter in builds: Once your build is finish, go to the BB sign in markup, copy and paste the text and paste it into your post. Themes: The winner of the past contest gets to choose the theme of the next contest, but keep it within reason. Contest 1: Theme is best price to performance under 1000USD. Including peripherals like KB and Mouse. No OS and monitor/display needed. Contest 2: Theme is decided by Contest 1 winner. About: This is basically like the last LTT build off thread, but it's changed a bit. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/35226-the-ltt-build-off-thread-no-building-required/ People: Me(@Bubblewhale), @Vegetable, @ddbtkd456, and @Codymm03 are the current people running this build off so far. Again Note that you DO NOT post your entries in this thread, you post them on the contest thread. Previous Winners of the old Build off thread: Just going to tag to keep it going.

Welcome to the 55th LTT Build-Off! The rules and previous contests can be found here. Budget: $1,300 Speakers/Headphones: Yes Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: September 27th through October 3rd Voting: October 11th through 16th This is NOT a gaming-oriented build. Sound quality is very important, so pay attention to your choice of speakers/headphones and amp/dac/soundcard. Also, keep storage in mind (FLAC files, for example, can get pretty big). -
Welcome to Week 41 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you to @GRRigger for suggesting this challenge. This week the challenge is to build a price/performance gaming rig, with a twist. Unlike previous Build-Offs, this challenge has a variable budget. You may enter a part list with a budget between $500 and $900 (please specify what price point you are trying to hit), and make your build the best for the money. If you think an extra $100 is worth spending for a GPU, then by all means add it and justify it in your post. Budget: $500-$900 Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: April 18th through 24th Voting: April 25th through May 1st Let me know if you like this idea or it should never be repeated

Hello and welcome to the LTT Build-Off, Week 4! This week's challenge is to build something to convert people from the "next-gen" consoles to PC gaming for $550 (No elitist ideology required). A twist this week is that you do not need a monitor or speakers, because a console would be hooked up to your TV. You can opt for a KB + M, or a controller, or both (and this is part of the price). Make sure that this PC is something you would want in your living room. A tower case with LED lighting may not be the best choice... As always, the rules can be found here. This contest will run from Friday the 2nd to Tuesday the 6th, with voting on the 7th and 8th. May the odds be ever in your favor! UPDATE Aug. 9th 2013: @tk421 is the winner! Thank you to everyone who participated and voted. The next contest can be found here.

Hey everyone! The challenge this week is to make the most powerful small-form-factor PC that you can for $1,250. As always, the rules and guidelines can be found here. SFF means that you must have a Mini-ITX motherboard and chassis. Note that this "power" is not for a specific purpose, such as gaming, so make sure your components are balanced. Overclocking will definitely give you better performance, so keep that in mind. This contest will run from Friday July 19th to Tuesday the 23rd, with Wednesday and Thursday (the 24th and 25th) reserved for voting. GLHF and BUILD, BUILD, BUILD! UPDATE: Voting is now live, so no further entries will be added to the poll. If you didn't submit a part list, please vote for your favorite. A winner will be announced on August 2nd since nobody has voted by the original deadline, Friday, July 26th. UPDATE: Congratulations to the winner, WoodenMarker! As of Friday, August 2nd, his part list had the most votes. The next contest can be found here.

Welcome to the first build off! The rules and guidelines can be found here This week's challenge is a PC dedicated to an immersive gaming experience. That means that good audio and picture quality are key, as well as smooth frame rates. Fan noise should not interfere with the gaming experience either. To top it off, you have a budget of $1,700. This contest will run from Friday July 12th to Tuesday the 16th, with the 17th and 18th reserved for voting. Please submit your part lists before the 17th. May the best builder win! UPDATE: Congratulations to LonliestOfAll, the winner of the build-off! As of Friday morning (July 19th) his part list had the most votes. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in build-offs on the forum. This idea was originally proposed on the PCPartPicker forums, but they don't have nearly the community that we do here. Every week/two weeks a thread is made with criteria and a goal for a build, such as "Best PC for Immersive Gaming for $1,800." For a build like that, the important things would be smooth framerates, good audio quality, low fan noise, and a nice display. Using PCPartPicker, contestants choose parts for a rig that they think best fits the criteria (while staying under budget). The post with the most "likes" wins after a set amount of time. Other criteria could be things like brand choice, color scheme, form factor, etc. What do you guys think? Should this be a thing on the LTT forums? If it turns into a big thing then maybe the winner each week could be mentioned on the live stream along with the Build Logs of the Week. Because of this, I'm leaning towards a Thursday to Thursday schedule so each contest will finish the day before the livestream. N.B./Update: The first build-off will be next Thursday in the New Builds and Planning forum. I'll make a thread with the topic and rules.

Welcome to Week 44 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you @dragoon20005 for suggesting the challenge. The challenge is to build the best AMD APU system for cheap. Because of the price, the main competitor would be "next-gen" consoles. Don't forget that fast RAM helps AMD's APUs! Budget: $600 Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: May 24th through 26th Voting: May 26th through 29th

Welcome to Week 42 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you @f22luke for suggesting the challenge. This week the challenge is to make a very solid, silent, and stable machine for gaming and general productivity/multitasking. You probably won't be overclocking, as that increases heat and noise while reducing component longevity. Budget: $1,555.55 Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: Yes Submissions: May 2nd through 5th Voting: May 6th through 8th (The text should be all set for the dark theme--I remembered this time )

Welcome to Week 40 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you to @Marnsto for suggesting this challenge. This week the challenge is a balls-to-the-wall, $4,000 beast of a computer. You need to have a 4K monitor, so hunt around for the best deals (not necessarily on PCPP). You can use the R9 295X2, Titan Z, Titan Black (good luck staying under budget), or a 6GB 780/780Ti as long as you can provide a link with the price. Have fun with this one Budget: $4,000 Speakers/Headphones: Yes Mouse: Yes Keyboard: Yes Monitor: Yes Submissions: April 12th through 14th Voting: April 15th through 17th

Welcome to Weeks 9/10 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week's challenge is to make a partlist with a green and grey/gunmetal/silver color scheme with the added stipulation of using Nvidia GPUs only. You can use any form factor, and peripherals are required. You have a budget of a whopping $3,000! Tips: You have a huge budget. This is one of the few builds where you won't be constrained by money. Go crazy! A custom watercooling loop will be great for your color scheme and awesomeness factor, but don't leave out any components. For example, if you don't have a pump in your loop, your build will be disqualified. This was suggested to me as an Nvidia Fanboy build, and while I have changed it to be broader, Nvidia is still required (which fits in with the color scheme). The contest will run from Friday September 6th to Thursday September 12th, with the 10th, 11th, and 12th reserved for voting. UPDATE: voting is live, but since I was late in making the poll and we have a lot of entries, this contest has been extended one week. Thursday the 19th is the last day of voting.

Welcome to Week 30 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you @zinton for suggesting this week's challenge. This week the challenge is to put together a gaming rig that can run on 400W or fewer (your PSU cannot have more wattage than that). Budget: $630 Peripherals: No Monitor: No Submissions: January 31st through February 3rd Voting: February 4th through 6th Tips: Obviously, energy efficiency is a big factor in your part choices. Small form factor is better (both for the power supply and the case/motherboard).

Welcome to the Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week's challenge is to make a partlist using as many Cooler Master and Gigabyte branded parts as possible. The budget is $1,000. You can use any form factor you want and peripherals are not required (but a monitor is). This is the beginning of a few brand-themed builds. These are simply stipulations that make you use parts you might not otherwise choose. The Build-Offs are not affiliated with or sponsored by any companies or brands. The contest will run from Friday August 30th to Thursday September 5th, with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th reserved for voting. UPDATE: @lachyman is our winner! Congrats to him!

Welcome to the Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week's challenge is to get the best bang for your buck with the components in your parts list. Your budget is $900. Pay careful consideration to things like overclocking. If you are spending $70 on a cooler, are you really getting enough extra performance out of it? This contest will run from Friday August 16th to Thursday the 22nd, with Tuesday through Thursday reserved for voting. UPDATE: Added the poll. Let's get some votes going! UPDATE Aug. 23rd 2013: @WoodenMarker is the winner!

Welcome to Week 11 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week's challenge is to make a partlist composed of as many Corsair and Asus branded parts as possible. The budget is $1,000. The Build-Offs are not affiliated with or sponsored by any companies or brands. The contest will run from Saturday September 21st to Thursday September 26th, with the 24th, 25th, and 26th reserved for voting. (Sorry about the delays with the last contest and this one--homework is the killer of free time).

Welcome to 12th LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This is a very scalable topic. You could make a barebones rig and run a minecraft server on it no problem. However, I wanted to keep things interesting, so the budget is set quite a bit higher than "barebones." It is $1,400, in fact. This PC should not have a big footprint. It is a server, so cool and quiet operation is important. For this usage scenario, peripherals are unimportant. You don't even need a monitor. Also, a good storage solution is important. You get bonus points for a NIC, which would help with server bandwidth. The contest will run from Friday September 27th to Thursday October 3rd, with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reserved for voting. Hop to it! UPDATE: Congratulations to @Blackterror25 for winning his first build-off!

Welcome to the Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week's challenge is to build the coolest looking (and well-performing) PC with an orange and red color scheme for $1,100. You can use any form factor and any brand. This contest will run from Friday August 9th to Thursday the 15th, with Wednesday the 14th and Thursday the 15th reserved for voting. Get to it UPDATE: Voting is live and open until Thursday night/Friday morning. Some of your entries have not been counted because they do not adhere to the rules (lack of peripherals). Notify me if I mistakenly disqualified you. Also for the voters, note that Emrykan's entry is his last post, not first post. This week's thread got a little messy, so could the contestants delete old revisions of their entries? That would make it easier for people to vote. UPDATE Aug. 16th 2013: @Terminashunator is the winner. Congrats! The next contest can be found here.

Welcome once again to the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. The challenge this week is to build the best video editing workstation that you can for $1,600. A few tips: Don't underestimate the power of hardware acceleration and GPU compute. You will need to find a good balance between massive storage and redundancy for important files, the usefulness of a scratch disk, and the speed of an SSD. Video editing programs can be very RAM and CPU intensive (and are multithreaded). While not actually required, I highly recommend an IPS panel. The better colors are important for video editing. On that note, better resolution or multiple monitors is great for a workstation. I know those bullet points are a lot to fit in, but it's all about the compromises when you have to stick to a budget. What are you standing around for? Submit your part list! :) NOTE: As of this build off, a revision has been made. You no longer need to include a mouse, keyboard, or speakers/headphones in your build. A monitor is still required. This may change on a case by case basis for future contests. For example, if a contest revolves around certain brands or colors, I may require peripherals. However, I will make that clear in those posts. Update: The poll has been added. Voting will run from Tuesday the 27th through Thursday the 29th. UPDATE: We have our first tie! The winners are @chromeboy42 and @WoodenMarker.

Welcome to Week 52 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you to @MEC-777 and @f22luke for suggesting the challenge. In MEC-777's words: This is the first part of the challenge, so keep in mind that you need a viable upgrade path. The next challenge (in two weeks) will be to upgrade the winning build from this contest. Budget: $500 base computer + $500 for upgrades Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: August 15th through 21st Voting: August 22nd through 28th This is obviously a little more involved than previous challenges, so if you have any questions about this experiment, ask below. Happy building!
