I recently picked up the new Alienware AW2725DF and it's my first OLED Monitor; coincidentally also my first experience at all with HDR. If I have HDR disabled, everything looks extremely dim and washed out, and if I enable HDR without changing any settings it looks pretty much identical. The only way I seem to be able to get the monitor to look nice and colourful is if I change the "SDR Content Brightness" slider under HDR settings until it's around 80-90%, but even then it looks darker than my old VA panel and only just brigher than my old TN. I tried playing Red Dead Redemption 2 with the SDR Content Brightness cranked up and it went dim again even if I disabled HDR ingame, and when I enabled HDR and tried to calibrate it, it didn't seem to make a difference. I've tried multiple different HDR settings in the monitor's settings (Desktop, Movie HDR, Game HDR, DisplayHDR True Black and HDR Peak 1000) and they all mostly look very similar except Peak 1000 has much more ABL than the others. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my panel or something because everything I can find online indicates that this monitor is plenty bright and a lot of people are saying they even have it at 80-90% brightness in the monitor settings when even 100% for me looks very dim, and a lot of people have been saying you shouldn't have the SDR Content Brightness slider above 30%. I tried the windows HDR calibration and that didn't seem to make a difference and I downloaded the 2.2 gamma ICC profile online and that didn't help either. The only time I've been satisfied with the brightness was when I was playing Red Dead 2 and it was night time in game, the blacks were inky and the bright spots were actually bright, but I'm assuming that's only because the rest of the display was fully black so it looked much brighter in contrast. I play a lot of competitive games and in those the brightness just isn't anywhere near where I would have expected it to be without maxing out the SDR Content Brightness slider, but the 360hz and motion clarity are absolutely incredible. I might have been imagining this but it also seemed like the brightness auto adjusted after playing for a while, it seemed to dim mid match and then by the end of the match or when starting the next it was brighter again. I'm using the included DP 1.4 cable with the monitor, my windows version is Windows 11 Pro 23H2. I'm running this monitor beside a 4k ASUS PB287Q and a 1440p Samsung C27JG50. I've attached an image of the advanced displa settings also. PC Specs (not sure if needed but I'll include anyway): RTX 3070 FE Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B450M Mortar Max Corsair Vengeance 8x4GB DDR4 3600MHz I'll include any more information if needed, thanks!

Hey all, I've been looking for a solution to reduce the white point on my ASUS VG27AQ TUF Gaming monitor but coming up unsuccessful. Recently I had found out about an accessibility option on my iPhone/iPad called 'Reduced White Point' which lowers the white point of those displays (seems similar to a backlight adjustment). Ideally, I'd love to have the same option for Windows 11 but can't seem to find anything similar in software. My current setup has the monitor brightness at 0%, with the blue light filter set to level 3, and picture mode set to Racing (for best color accuracy according to RTINGS). I did come across a forum post stating that reducing the brightness from within the NVIDIA control will help, which it does to a degree, but I feel like it loses color accuracy. Is there a way I can reduce the backlight (either software or hardware) on these monitors? Are there better monitors for backlight control or white point reduction? Any suggestions or helpful tips would be appreciated!

I'm very surprised that there's almost no discussion regarding the issue I'm about to report. I recently bought a T5300 Samsung TV, I'm from South America, so I guess here it would be considered a mid-tier TV. Upon initial setup, I noticed that the overall brightness of the screen changed depending on how bright or dark the scene was, and it did so in a gradual way (I'd say between 1/2 and 1 second). I thought this could be a "feature" of some kind, so I referred to the manual and found that there's an eco mode that could cause the TV to change its brightness depending on the lighting of the room, but that was disabled, and changing that setting didn't produce any result. I've never seen a TV behave that way and to me it was extremely notorious, distracting and annoying, so I sent it to the warranty service, where, according to them, they replaced the panel, but while testing it I noticed that the issue was still there. The technician came, saw the behavior and said that's how the TV was supposed to work and there was no failure and all they could do was raise the case to Samsung. I took the TV back home and did some further testing, and I noticed that if I plugged my PC through HDMI to the TV, then it would behave as expected with no dimming. One weird thing is that I also have a Fire TV Stick, and even though it also works with HDMI, it still dimmed the screen regardless of the streaming service I was using. I went to the store and tested other Samsung TVs and they all presented this issue, but other brands like LG didn't, even when they were in the same price range. So, I'm curious why this hasn't been reported by more people and why Samsung would force this behavior when the screen is clearly capable of not changing the brightness, just as you'd expect. If anyone has a similar model Samsung TV and wants to test this out, I'd recommend the credits section of this YouTube video, just because in there the behavior is very evident, but it basically affects any night or dark scene, to the point where white becomes gray. I'd appreciate your feedback on this.

On one of my HDR monitors, the color is dimmer than the other, (its easier to see in the title bar of the photo viewer I have on in the video) UNTIL I launch a game with freesync enabled, then that monitor gets brighter and stays that way, even after closing the game. if freesync is DISABLED then it DOESN'T get brighter. When it is brighter it seems to match the OTHER HDR monitor. This implies to me that HDR isn't fully 'on' until I launch a game with freesync enabled. I'd like it to be in the brighter mode all the time, to match the other HDR monitor, but I'm not sure what is going on. Right Monitor: Samsung LS28AG700N Left Monitor: Acer VG281K GC: 6800 XT All driver's updated.

I have an external keyboard which does not have any shortcut key to change the screen brightness. On my built-in keyboard, the mapping is Fn+F5/F6, but I barely ever use my built-in keyboard. The external keyboard does have Fn key, and doesn't do anything when pressing this combination. I want to create a custom combo to use on the external keyboard, like fn+f5/f6 or maybe fn+uparrow/downarrow. Any help/article on how I can do this appreciated!

Hello, I recently purchased an LG 27GL83A-B and can hardly stand how horrible the blacks are. White text on black backgrounds looks very blurry, I can’t see dark areas in games while the rest is on the peak of being too bright. Has anyone found a work around to setting tweaks to help with this? Very disappointing considering how popular it appears to be.

I've been trying to find my brightness settings but they are all gone. One site tells me I can change it from the action center on my taskbar next to the time but the slider isn't there. Another says to click advances settings in display but it isnt there and another site says to change my power plan settings but its not there either. WTF is Microsoft doing? Where is the brightness setting?

Hi everyone, I am loking for some software solution to auto control screen brightness through the webcam (I do not have a light sensor in my monitor and would prefer not to buy an external one). I looked around and found this Clight on github GitHub - FedeDP/Clight: A C daemon that turns your webcam into a light sensor. It will adjust screen backlight based on ambient brightness. It seems one of the only options, but I am not a programmer and not really confident with code, and I am not able to understand how to use the program and if it is compatible. I am currently on windows 10, and I see that in the code there is written archlinux. This makes me think it is a linux only app, but hope never dies, and maybe there is a workaround with the windows subsystem for linux? Also an alternative using something like python would be a nice project to work on for me. (I know python basics but usually work on R for statistical reasons, I know R is more similar to C probably). Let me know if you have any suggestion.

My sister got a new laptop a month ago. It's an HP Pavilion x360 with a 10th gen i5 and a touch screen. Anyway, I dropped the thing a a week ago and the back of the display hit the ground. Picked it up, everything working fine. A week later i.e. today, my sister was using her laptop when she wanted to change the brightness. She pressed the brightness button and the indicator in the top left corner of the screen showed up according to which the brightness was changing but it actually wasn't. Then 25 seconds later, it started working again. Is this a problem with the display? Can it be related to me dropping it? Or is it just a software issue? Thank you.

Hello, I noticed that when I am in KDE Manjaro (live disk) , the minumum screen brightness is much lower than that of Windows with its updated graphics driver. I was wondering if there is any way to remedy that as because a lower min screen brightness is very useful at night. Does anyone know anything about this? System: Asus Zenbook UX430UAR. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello everyone, I would like to know about brightness levels in laptops. What do you think is too bright or too dim? I read about the Lenovo Legion 5 having a brightness of "only" 300 nits My laptop has a max brightness of 334 nits (according to Google) and most of the time I only use 4 out of the 16 bars of brightness level available. Do you think anything more than 300 nits is necessary for me? Does it make a lot of difference between 300 and say, 500 nits? Especially when my eyes are much more suited to lower brightness levels. Thank you

I just bought a new Sceptre 1440p monitor and noticed that there are 2 settings on the OSD that control how bright the screen gets - "brightness" and "backlight". Which one should I change and why?

I cannot install a driver version newer than 512.72 on my laptop; if I do it, for some reason my laptop's brightness defaults to max and wont change no matter what. I installed version 527.37 and the problem persists. It just started happening out of the blue when I updated my drivers a little while back. Ever since then, I cannot update above 512.72 or the brightness problem comes back. I have reset and reformatted my laptop a few times but it hasn't helped. I can't seem to figure out what's causing this issue. Is anyone else having this problem? I have a Dell G15 5515 (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060).

So I'm looking to get an iPhone 11 but I went to the store and compared its screen to the iPhone 11 Pro and there was a huge difference in screen brightness. I turned the brightness level to the max on both and still the iPhone 11 did look very dimmed even compared to what the videos on YouTube show. So is it like this or was there a setting that still lowered the brightness overall? I'm looking to switch from Android to iOS so I might've missed something here.

Hi everyone! I'm looking to replace my current monitor with one brighter. I have an eye condition which restricts my field of view so I can't have a wide monitor, 24 inches is the limit. Also I have difficulties with low light environments, this includes low brightness monitors. So I was wondering if you could help me out finding a 24 inches monitor with a brightness superior to 400 cd/m²? If it is 120 or 144 hz FHD or 1440p it is a plus. I intend on spending 350 € (I'm in the EU) maximum, but if there's no reference at that price point I would understand. Thanks for your time !

I'm currently looking for a Tablet (or an external Screen) whose entire purpose would be viewing PDFs outside, under direct Sunlight, to study while stuck at home due to corona. My current Laptop is quite capable, but isnt't bright enough for that. Because this is a fairly limited use case, i would rather not spend more that 200€ for it. The Problem: in this price range, most of the devices have quite bad screens or, in case of the many chinese no-name brands, no reliable brighntess information is available. I just think that there has to be a device that tries to fill that gap, but I cant really find one. I also don't have a reference what amount of nits would be enough, or how different Panels would compare under direct sunlight. Does anyone of you have a device that has a capable screen under those criteria, and even if yours is too expensive, could you please post your model so i can get a feel what brighness to aim for? Thanks a lot!

Hi. I have been spending quite some time today trying to calibrate my monitor correctly, mainly for photography work. I am now satisfied that my colour and contrast are correct. However, when setting my brightness level, I decided to go with what seemed like a general photography standard of 120cd/m2 but when I did the calibration using my Spyder 4 colorimeter it told me that with 120 set on the monitor it was actually measuring over 130. To get the readout from the colorimeter to be 120 I had to lower it on the monitor to 106. I know monitors are supposed to lose brightness over time but this one seems to be gaining brightness. Has anyone had this before? Colorimeter measurement issue perhaps? The monitor is an eizo coloredge cs230 and quote old now. I have had it for several years. Is there another method I can use to verify what the brightness actually is? I do have an old spyder colorimeter I could install that may be able to provide a ‘second opinion’.

Monitor in question is VN247h, i have a gtx 670 running on W10. I noticed that videos and only videos ( even on browsers ) are much darker then they really are, thought that my monitor had shit colors. However, today i installed a second old monitor, and after messing around i ran a movie in a dark scene to compare colors, where i noticed that if it's in the middle of both monitors the colors are perfect . I tried messing with the Nvidia/monitor settings with no success ( maybe i did it wrong? ) . Video showing problem Current driver : 376.33 ( Dec 14th 2016 ). Edit : Nvidia video settings start working again somehow. maybe just a bug idk.

Hello everyone! :-) I bought a single ASUS ROG PG278Q display early last year and then a couple of months back decided to upgrade to triple displays for increased productivity and gaming. Now, I got two additional ASUS ROG PG278Q displays, BUT the problem is that when I mirror the settings on each exactly, the older monitor is less bright than the two new units which match exactly. At first I thought it was the viewing angles messing with it, as the older display was in the center, but I've switched them around and am pretty sure that is not the issue. :-( Is it just dimming or some kind of loss of brightness over time, or do the other two have excess brightness that will dim to a more normal hue in a few months? Any kind of insight/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! :-)

Edit: Replugging the laptop to the power supply fixes the problem, manageable, but still somewhat annoying. My Acer Aspire V Nitro (Aspire VN7-592G) has it's display change brightness based on what is present on the screen (white makes it brighter, black makes it darker). This does not change the brightness value in Windows, only some hidden value I can't access. Changing some system registry value worked, but after a while it started again, and the registry value wasn't changed. I tried different values, but it still keeps happening. I've tried changing power settings in intel's graphics properties software, but this always reverts it to its default value after a restart, and it doesn't change anything either. Hello, I'd like to have a really true color display which is safe to eyes. I don't know how to set my monitor properly. When I set the brightness or contrast to highest it's too bright. but when I set it to some recommended values I've found on the internet, it seems really dark to me. I've even tried those sites which are supposed to help me to calibrate my screen, but I couldn't see any difference... Do you guys have any suggestions on what to do?
