**WARNING** This toturial aims for people who have enough skills and experiences with general Overclocking, BIOS tweaking and Hardware mantainence skills. If you are not capable of doing stuff like this, DO NOT FOLLOW THIS TOTURIAL. Any hardware changes MAY result in permanant damage to your device please think twice before doing this. Any damanges caused by this thread will not be my fault,And I will not be responsibie for it, since I've mentioned all the risks. English is not my first language, please notify me if you find something that's hard to understand. ---- Hello everyone! I've recently came across many forums and threads about gaming on a 16-inch intel Macbook Pro. To my suprise, after doing some of the techniques mentions in those threads, gaming performance does improved alot on my Macbook, But for some games (Like Apex Legends) it was still not enough. What I've initially did was: 1.Opening the machine up and add thermal pads to VRMs. 2.Add external coolings to the bottom side of the machine where VRMs transfer their heat to the metal chasis. 3.(Specifially for Apex Legends) apply cfg file editing for extreme low graphics. After those tweaks, my game runs at doubles the framerate most of the time. With a external 144hz montior attached from typeC port, I get to play overwatch at steady 145FPS (capped to display refreshrate) But for Apex Legends, the game runs smooth at 145fps cappped for the first couple of seconds, then drops down to the 70s soon. also whenever there is smoke, gunfights or more player models being rendered, the fps drops to painfully 40fps under 900P, LOWEST. To me, having consistant framerate at above 130fps is required. so I did some more experiments and testings, only to find that whenever the game has been running over for sometime, the GPU clock speed drops down below to around 500-600Mhz, Which is NOT ideal for gaming. To solve this, I used two tools. 1.QuickCPU 2.MorePowerTool To those who know what you're doing and have had some experiences using those softwares, I will explain this short. First of all, you need to fire up MorePowerTool , load up the GPUBIOS dump from GPU-Z and go to the Frequency tab, input what I have showed here: Note: this is the result i have after the first test where it is stable. if you are not happy with the result of locking GPUclock at 1.25Ghz, Maybe try 1.45Ghz.Anything ABOVE 1450Mhz is Overlocking your GPU, which is NOT recommended for a laptop like this, considering the thermal design is already poor, not to mention the additional power needed for GPU to reach higher clockspeed, which our CPU will get hungry about later. After tweaking the numbers, hit Write SPPT and reboot. Next, fireup QuickCPU, go to Advanced CPU settings→Speed Shift and change everything to what I've showed here: This is for limiting the CPU Frequency to a acceptable place where it won't be too slow to drag the 144fps target nor too high to be useless and eating more power, making more heat. After all this, hit Apply and save it as a profile to auto apply. Now, fire up any game that you won't be able to run at steady 60fps before and get smooth, steady no stutter 144fps experience. For me, Overwatch now runs at around 260 to 280fps if I want it to, but i prefer capping at 145. Apex Legends have the most improvement for me. before doing this i get only 40 to 70 fps most of the time, with potato PC cfg settings and 900P display resolution. Now, i can reach steady 145fps most of the time, not dropping even when heavy battle is happening with multiple squads fighting, using nades, smokes... under Low settings without potatoPC cfg settings, 900P. it will drops down to 130fps under 1080P, but i think if you limit GPUclockspeed to 1.45Ghz it will be the same as 900P. Finally, this toturial is mainly aimed for people who already have their macbook thermal upgraded with the VRM thermal pads. doing such without the VRM thermal pads may result in huge CPU performance drops that made everthing unplayabe, or even shut down the device due to VRM protection.

Hello kind people, So, I'll try to keep it short. About half a year ago, I installed bootcamp on my MacBook Pro 16' (i7, 5500M, 16BG Ram), since all I wanted to do is play league of legends and theoretically, my MBP should run all over my old PC (4 year old dual core i3...). Now the performance was... underwhelming... I tried using throttle stop in Windows to get the Game running smoother. After spending days and still not having a good experience, I eventually became so annoyed, that I deleted the bootcamp drive. But now my actual problem: I'm getting extreme performance issues in MacOS... especially, when I connect my Monitor (full HD), I can't even use Lightroom while I'm in a Zoom meeting... The "kernel task" in the activity monitor just goes through the roof. Is it possible, that my fiddling around with throttle stop in bootcamp now bites me in the behind after going back to MacOSß Thank you in advance!!

TL;DR version: I am looking for an ultrabook/Macbook for around 900 dollars (pre-tax). I am concerned that I cannot get on-par performance for the same amount of money that I spent on my laptop in 2015. Here are my specific questions, but all ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated. 1- Will there be an M1-like chipset from AMD/Intel that will bring any Windows laptop to M1 Macbook performance levels (within similar packaging/thermal constraints)? 2- Is this an exceptionally bad time to buy a laptop? Should I delay it by a year if possible? 3- What would be a set of specifications for a laptop ready for the next 5 years? Feb 21 Update: Tentatively decided to wait for Macbook Air/Pro with M2. --------------------------------Post starts here. ----------------------------- I am looking for something in the same price range as my previous laptop. However, I won't "upgrade" to a new laptop if I won't get a substantially better device, naturally! I also want to treat this as a practice in exploring how much 'newer and faster technology' has become more accessible over the last 5 years. To establish the baseline, let me quickly go over the specs of my current laptop. In June 2015, I bought the ASUS UX303L-Signature Edition with the following specs for 800 USD (equiv. to 873 in Dec'20 1). 13.3'' 3200 x 1800 with touch Intel Core i5-5200U 8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz 256GB SSD (around 400 MB/s read and write) Intel HD Graphics 5500 1.46 kg My review of the device: It had good(not Macbook level, but satisfactory) battery life. It was an absolute beast for high school. Its construction is rigid. Storage has been fine. Processor has just started feeling sluggish in the last year. Yellows look mustard-y, but it is not bothersome. Great for someone who needs a computer for classes and extracurriculars. Why change it now? The hinge snapped a few times. For now, it's held together by epoxy. Battery life has gone downhill, too. Also, now that I am deep into the college life, I'm doing more engineering work. That means CAD modeling and MATLAB analysis. Also Python. I am sure thousands of people would understand the workload. Novice engineer work. It is getting laggier by day. Note: I don't have a workstation. Looking at the current market Note: I still need to carry this device everywhere and use it on battery power. Loads of typing is inevitable, too. I would love to have a 14'' or 15'' display this time. I also don't have good enough Internet connection for any modern Wi-Fi standard to be an issue. 16:10 aspect ratio is preferred, but 16:9 is acceptable. Also, MacOS is fine (well, except Solidworks, and ARM Bootcamp support will be an interesting question, but I may use university computers for SW.) I'd quit following laptop prices after buying mine, and I am shocked to see how much prices have gone up. I've checked out a few competitors (in the ultrabook category) that sprung to mind, and here's what I can get for the same price in Jan'21: ---------SKIP THIS SECTION IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH CURRENT PRICING ON ULTRABOOKS ---------- DELL: 900 USD OLD XPS 13: i7-10510U , 8GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz , 256 GB PCIe SSD,13'' FHD non-touch 2 1000 USD NEW XPS 13: i3-1115G4, 8GB LPDDR4 4267MHz , 256 GB PCIe SSD,13''FHD non-touch 2 ASUS: 1000 USD ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481: i7-10510U, 8GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz, 512 GB PCIe SSD, 14'' FHD touch3 800 USD ASUS Zenbook UX325JA-XB51: i5-1035G1, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, 13'' FHD non-touch3 1000 USD ASUS Zenbook UX325JA-DB71: i7-1065G7, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, 13'' FHD non-touch3 900 USD ASUS Zenbook UX431FL-EH74 : i7-10510U, 8GB RAM, 512GB PCIE SSD, 14'' FHD touch?, NVIDIA GeForce MX2503 ... similar options at similar prices 800 USD Asus Zenbook UM433DA-DH75 : Ryzen 7 3700U, 8GB RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, 14.0" FHD touch?3 HP: 835 USD HP ENVY x360 15'' BASE: i5-1135G7m 8GB DDR4 RAM, 256 GB Intel(?) If I sacrifice on battery life/build quality/ thin-and-light aspect, I can get an i7/Ryzen 7, 16 GB of RAM for a bit above my budget. That makes me concerned about how future-proof my new laptop would be. I bought my ultrabook when 12 GB RAM was the absolute maximum on an ultrabook and SSD had just gotten cheaper. It has served me well, but now I need something that will serve me equally well for at least another 5 years. I also have another option- getting my brother's 2016 Macbook Pro (i5-6267U, 256 GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 2133 Mhz, Iris 550) to use for a year. I know benchmarks are not perfect. Especially across operating systems. But here's one comparison list: PassMark (Multi-thread) - CPU i5-5200U : 2,512 (Current) i5-6267U : 3,236 (Loaner Mac) i3-1115G4 : 6,465 i7-10510U : 6,997 i5-1035G7 : 8,414 i7-1065G7: 8,967 i5-1135G7 : 9,774 i7-1165G7 : 10,414 Ryzen 5 4500U : 11,267 Ryzen 7 4700U : 13,802 PassMark shows significant increase in performance. However, I'm not sure what that would mean for me, the workloads I have do not benefit drastically from more cores/threads. I feel that RAM would be a bigger factor, for example. Or maybe I should consider a -weak but still much better than integrated- GPU. Main Question: I feel insulted about waiting 5 years and still getting a laptop with 8GB of RAM. Looking at the rate of development at desktops, I feel terrible about paying so much when a desktop would be 10 times faster, more reliable and future proof. But I need a laptop. I am open to all ideas, all suggestions, all recommendations. Specifically, I also want to ask: 1- Will there be an M1-like chipset from AMD/Intel that will bring any Windows laptop to M1 Macbook performance levels (within similar packaging constraints)? 2- Is this an exceptionally bad time to buy a laptop? Should I delay it by a year? 3- What would be a set of specifications for a laptop ready for the next 5 years? Hello people, So I guess I am not really a "Gamer" I only do some light gaming. 4 years ago, I build my own "gaming" PC. It was basically the cheapest PC I could build with at the time modern hardware that included a dedicated Graphics card (i3 6100; 8 gb of RAM, GTX 1050 ti). For studying, I got a pretty beefed up MacBook Pro 16' a year ago (2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7; 16gb of ram; AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB) about a year ago. Today, I installed Windows through bootcamp in the hopes of having a little better performance and the portability of a laptop. Turns out, a Rise of the Tompraider benchmark on the same settings and monitor show the Mac to be about 15/20% slower... Does that make sense? I mean, I know, you don't buy a Mac for gaming... but still... that is 3000 EUR of modern hardware against what was 600 EUR 4 years ago... I didn't expect HUGE improvements, but I didn't think it'd be worse... Hope you can help me understand this a little better. Thanks in advance!

Summary Basically, the M1 Macs are capable of running Windows 10 on ARM natively, it's up to Microsoft to support it Quotes My thoughts Right now, the likes of Parallels and WMware Fusion isn't running well on M1 Macs maybe because virtualization programs for x86 is much more diffcult to translate than a video editor. ARM chips have supported virtualization for years already and it's no secret that this is how Apple showed how devs can run other operating systems like Linux. While Bootcamp maybe gone at the moment for M1 Macs, Apple could bring it back should Microsoft wishes to do so. But at the state of W10 on ARM, I doubt anyone would want to dabble with that considering that WoA has been around since 2012 and so far (first it was Windows RT, then Windows 10 on ARM), little progress has been made. Even the reviews of the current ARM PCs with Snapdragon chips, many will tell that x86 emulation costs a huge performance penalty. As I've said once in a status update reply, Apple succeeded where Microsoft failed. Maybe this time when ARM on PCs getting more attention and the likes of Qualcomm and even Huawei who is now making desktop ARM chips, maybe more developers port their programs to ARM64. It doesn't even need to be a UWP app afaik to run natively on Windows 10 PC with an ARM chip. Maybe that will be the time when Apple brings back Bootcamp to AS Macs. So far, if you are currently holding on to an Intel based Mac because of Bootcamp, Apple assured that support will continue for "years to come" which is quite vague. How many years is "many years to come"? Will it be like PowerPC which only got Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard? Craig Federighi said the following: Back when Apple transitioned to Intel chips in 2005, Macs became "just another PC", now there's more than differentiates a Mac from PC OEMs with their own ARM chips. Hello all, I’ve got a 2019 MacBook Pro with a Windows 10 Bootcamp install on it. Today I noticed that it’s failing to install a specific update. Update: 2022-12 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for ×64-based Systems (KB5012170) I’ve run DISM, SFC/scannow, windows update troubleshooter, stopped-cleared-restarted the Windows Update service. Nothing. Only thing I can think of is the system reserved partition. I see an EFI partition that is 300MB, but there is no way to expand it and there’s no indication that doing so would actually fix the issue. Anyone run into this or have ideas?

Hello Guys! This is my first Forum Post here, so bear with me please haha! So here is my unconvential Setup: I am running an imac 2017 27inch with the i7-7700K and a Radeon Pro 580 8GB Card and 8GB of RAM. I use Bootcamp with Windows 10 Pro to Play Halo MCC and CoD Warzone every now and then. The fans ofcourse run wildly with the Tiny unibody design. While playing warzone i sometimes Encounter a full Freeze of the machine wich is either (what i guess) just the game being still in BETA …. OR the iMac running too hot and thermal throttleing It could also be that i have not enough RAM because 8GB ofcourse is just Minimum to Play cod.... I don't know if a Computer can Freeze because it thermal throttles. Normally it just underclocks and Nothing happens as far as i know. Anyways, i just played a Little round of Warzone and let HWInfo run in the Background: The CPU Package sensor read 102 Degrees celcius max and every of the 4 cores read 99 Degrees the GPU was at 90 Degrees. The Question is now: can/should i reduce the temperatures? I don't think it's very healthy to run it this hot for often… I have already reduced my Settings drastically to just 1080p and i m getting way more than 60fps wich is max for the retina Display anyways. Before that i used it at 2,5k and everything on high with Steady 40-50fps Thank you guys and sorry for the Long text! ps dont hate me for not having a gaming machine, i mostly Play xbox one and use the imac for 3d Rendering, Lightroom and final cut :)

So a long time ago... (2014) I installed Windows 8 on my Mac (mid 2011 with an Ati Radeon HD 4670). I recently made a mistake and got the windows partition uninstalled... I installed it again, this time with windows 10 and I can’t find a way to install the GPU driver without the screen going dark. The only apparent solution is to go back to win 7 or 8 and then upgrade it to win 10. If someone knows another way it would be great!!

I am trying to install windows 10non my 2013 13" macbook pro running ios X 10.10. After finally being able to create an external boot drive on a USB with all applicable windows updates through bootcamp, when it reboots to install, all I get is a black screen with a blinking underscore and then nothing. Help me!

Hey everyone - really weird one for you today. So I have my Macbook Pro 2017 bootcamped with Windows 10 Pro and it was working fine yesterday - then there was an Apple softwware update for Bootcamp on Windows (which I installed) and all was fine until I rebooted. My Win10 bootcamp was now stuck in a boot loop. So I restarted into Mac OS to delete the partition and re-bootcamp. Which worked fine for a second - then the system restarted and went to boot into Windows to continue the setup. Got to the Windows logo and it all went black and went back to Mac OS. The partition was in Disk Utilities, however, the Boot Camp Assistant could not see it and on restart (while holding down option) it was not in the boot selection at all. So I repeated the steps of delete partition, re-bootcamp etc to no avail. It just doesn't work anymore. Any advice would be greatful Mac OS is Catalina 10.15.14

Hey Guys, I try here as i couldn't find any solution elsewhere. I recently decided to install windows 10 on my macbook pro 13" A1425 EMC 255 OS CATALINA All the installation on bootcamp went well on USB3 32go , but when it boot up again i was stuck on blue windows logo during 1 hour. 1. i decided to reboot the laptop 2. Now i am stuck on no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key 3. i tried to reboot with "option/alt" key or "CMD/R" or whatever i could find online but nothing works and i still getting the same error. 4. I think my keyboard is not working ( it worked fine yesterday on macos ) 5. I plug an external Windows keyboard (but same here (the CAPS LOCKS keys not lighting up) 6. Tryed to use an extension cable for both keyboard and usb devise but still getting the error. 7. Now i am stuck with a bricked macbook pro Please help me guys, Thanks

Deleted unused partitions, unable to access some files
theosssssss posted a topic in Troubleshooting
My friend asked me how he could resolve this, but I really had no clue what was going on, because I'm not very familiar with Macs. The friend that's asking for help often gets asked to install windows through Bootcamp (a lot of my friends and his own Macs), and there hasn't been a problem like this so far. Here's the message from him: "I was doing a favor for a friend, and he asked me to reinstall a copy of Windows through bootcamp, but bootcamp was refusing to delete it. I had my own special way to delete it though, and you know how when launching the EFI boot to install Windows for the first time, a disk partition/delete/format part comes up? I used that to delete the obsolete Windows partition and also some other partitions that seemed to be useless. I had intentionally left two partitions alone: One called Partition 2, that I am sure is the Mac partition and another one called “OS X RESERVED”. But when restarting and holding down the option key, there was no option to boot up into Mac. There were only two options to boot into Windows, one that seems crashed and another that seems to want to install Windows again. Both are useless. So my question is how I can boot back into Mac? I am thinking I deleted some partition that allowed for Mac to boot up, thus it isn’t showing up. In recovery mode, I can see that there is in fact, both the partition that seems to still have files in it, and the OS X RESERVED." I'd really appreciate any input on this. Thanks -
Hey I'm using a 2013 retina macbook pro. My GPU died in my 'gaming rig' and I want to use my mac to play some games (yes I know macs aren't for gaming but low setting will do for now). I have a sata to USB adapter. I've taken out the SSD and connected it to my macbook via USB 3.0 and booted up windows. I load up my macbook and select the usb boot drive. It boots into windows and then a blue screen of death comes up and then restarts the computer. Is there any way to load some drivers on to it or something? I'm using a 250gb Samsung EVO 850 SSD. Thanks!

I have Windows 10 on my Mac book pro using boot camp and whenever I call someone (skype, messenger, hangouts, etc.) after around like 30-60 minutes, my I-sight camera stops working (my camera is frozen and whenever I turn my camera back on, it would be a black screen). If I try closing all my video calling software apps, I notice that my green light is still on even though I'm not calling anyone. This problem stops working whenever I restart my computer but it gets annoying because after some period of time, my camera stops working.

Running WIndows 10 on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro using Bootcamp. No audio will play, and I'm getting the error message "No Audio Device Detected". The audio device is Realtek, it just isn't being detected. Any suggestions?

I have a 2015 Macbook pro base that I will be taking to college for a sys analyst program. I'm planning to have MacOs and windows run on the SSD in my computer, and have bigger files and projects transfered onto the HDD. From my understanding, WIndows and Mac use a different filesystem, and the hard drives I am looking at have to be reformatted to run on MacOS. Question is, are there drives out there that can interact with each OS and store files (im not expecting to open dmg files on WIndows ) or is the drive going to be only compatible with one os? I was planning to buy a new NVME SSD for my Mac, but since they're either sold by a 3rd party or on Ebay, their questionable integrity and prohibitive pricing make don't make that an option

So I have a 2015 macbook pro 13 that i installed windows 10 on for school, when im on windows, my Monitor (connected through displayport) keeps disconnecting (shows a black screen) then reconnects. This issue happens intermittently and i also get artifacts on the Monitor. I already tried reinstalling and updating iris drivers, as well as using the basic windows display driver. Does anybody know a fix? already tried getting help from windows TS and the problem is still here. Edit: Forgot to add that i have none of these issues on MacOS, so im pretty much certain that it's just windows being windows.

Apologies if formatted badly i'm doing this from my phone. So I have a mac with a windows partition using bootcamp. My nephew used it and it got infected, when i click on something is goes "out of focus" like you alt tabbed, but it does not tab to the next app. It's probably a malware. But I cannot remove it because I can't click the scan button in malwarebytes. Right now I am scanning it with malwarebytes in safe mode(problem persists but I managed to scan before it occured again) I was thinking of creating a FAT32 partition on my mac so I can move my important files from windows. Then I'd do a reinstall or a system restore. Afterwards moving back the files from the FAT32 partition from OSX. tl;dr Pc has troublesome virus makes fat32(to allow read/write from osx) partition on OSX(windows in bootcamp) transfer important windows file to newly made partition. reinstall/system restore windows move backuped files from created FAT partition back to windows.

My windows 8 is very unresponsive, I decided for a fresh reinstall of windows 8 after backing up my files there. However it seems that bootcamp cannot detect the windows OS anymore. Disk utilities show the partition normaly. I am currently downloading the Windows 10 ISO file required for bootcamp. 1. What do I do with the partition (the original windows 8 OS), all the files I need are already backed up and I don't mind losing the files there now. 2. Should I then format the partition (in that case what format? FAT?) or should I just delete the partition entirely?
