  1. After 8 long faithful years I finally swapped out my very first motherboard, an MSI Z87-G45. It was the last remaining part surviving the purge of beginner parts for big boy components from RAM, CPU, PSU, drives, you name it, this mobo outlasted it all. For a solid 5 years it ran in tandem with an overclocked Intel i5 4690k @ 4.3 mHz, Kingston HyperX Fury 2x8 DDR3 2400 mHz, and GTX 770 SLI. (Janky I know, but it worked flawlessly.) I would have waited out the rest of the boards days and populated more DIMM slots, but the Cooler Master 212 Evo w/ dual fans makes a clearance issue forcing you to not use it or use low profile RAM on ATX boards, which the HyperX is not by any means. Nor can you get more DDR3 HyperX at those speeds without scouring the internet with a fine tooth comb. This machine is my personal daily driver that I use frequently to play video games and use for school work which involves a lot of playing around in GIS software. So I saved up my nickels and dimes over the pandemic and last month bought a new mobo to replace the old one, switched from team blue to red with a 3700x and decided to cool it with a Corsair H150i, obligatory upgrade from 2x8GB to 2x16GB, and revamped my cooling situation by picking up some Noctua case fans. First picture is the complete new build working as intended. Below is a complete PCPartPicker list including peripherals, and excluding a 7 port USB 3.0 PCI hub made by the small Chinese firm Orico. Temperatures are acceptable, 1% lows idle are about 27C, 1% highs under full load are 63C, average idle is about 32C, while average full load is approximately 55C. Although Corsair iCue in my opinion is worse than any plague in history and I think this software frequently malfunctioning is directly responsible for increasing my average and 1% full-load CPU temps by 25-50%. During testing and breaking in the new components, about a week ago I had to force-restart my system after Civ 6 crashed. iCue was very much not a fan of that, and failed to recognize the pump in the software forcing it in "safe mode" which blinks the LED's red, and fans operate at 100%. A few restarts and forced firmware updates it fixed, but since then my data has been skewed towards running hotter and fluctuating throughout the range a lot more often. I unfortunately somewhat need the software since my RAM, AIO, and keyboard lights are all configured through it. The second picture is NZXT CAM software, responsible for managing 4 LED strips off an NZXT Hue 2 and changing colour according to CPU temperatures. Temperatures broadcasted from this software are as accurate as resource monitor, and a program called Core Temp, validating it's accuracy. Picture 3 is CPUZ software showing the maximum stable frequency achieved through AMD Ryzen Master auto-overclock. Keeping CPU temps chilly while under full load hours at a time is obviously a must if I am to keep these parts for at least 10 years. Upgrading from a 4690k @ 4.3 gHz, 45C 1% highs after 4 hours of Witcher 3 gainz. Instead liquid cooling with the Corsair H150i, the CPU cooler I used had 2x120mm fans attached to the heatsink in push/pull. Replacing the triple radiator was a top 2x120mm exhaust and a Blu-ray drive. (RIP In Peace, it won't fit now w/ new cooler) Noctua p14's replaced the stock 6 year old dying 140mm fans that came with the case (Corsair 750D) set up as 2 intake and 1 exhaust. Combined the old setup worked as a low pressure system because of the sheer volume of air circulating through the system, but now operates as an ambient air cooler and provides the radiator with cold air. Pictures 3 and 4 are of my battlestation which was finished right before the pandemic. The monitor is an Asus VG32VQ 31.5" curved 16:9 VA panel @ 144 hz and 4ms gtg response time. I would go all out on a banging ultrawide or IPS panel but I'm limited by physical space in the hutch of my desk. Keyboard is a Corsair K70 Cherry MX Brown, Mouse is a Logitech g502 Proteus Spectrum, then for audio / comms I typically use a Logitech g935. Personalized goodies are a bunch of Bionicles, a rubber chicken, Lego ISS, and a bunch of different types of rocks then minerals including fools gold and raw asbestos. Oh yes and I drilled small holes in my wooden desk to properly cable manage a 1080p webcam, and an xbox one with zero airflow that runs like a furnace. No clue why. 2. Good Morning all, I am looking to purchase a laptop to be the windows half of my workstation/battlestation set up. This laptop will be used primarily CAD, Video and Photo rendering along with mid range gaming. I'm running a 16" Intel Macbook Pro as my Mac half of the set up running the mac specific programs (likely upgrade to new M1 Pro/Max model in a few months for neural engine upgrades). I've listed the specs i'm looking for below, any ideas you have of what might be a good fit is appreciated! Thanks CPU: 8 Core/16 thread minimum, 10 core optimal but in my search hard to find currently GPU: Non integrated, at least 6gb Vram, 8gb+ preferred (external GPU will not be used so stronger is better if possible) RAM:16gb+ Storage: 512gb minimum SSD Screen size: 14"-17" maximum, 15"-16" is sweet spot for my workspace IO: USB-C or Thunderbolt x1, RJ45 x1 are preferred, anything else can be worked around Price: Lower is better obviously: $1500-$2500 Let me know if you want any more info!
  3. I have achieved the final form of my work-from-home/gaming/streaming battlestation. Let me know what you all think! What do you do with this? I work from home at a major networking company, often on conference calls while multitasking heavily. For fun, I play games and work to expand my own technical knowledge. Among a wide variety of titles, but I play strategy, action, RPG, and FPS games. Assassins Creed, Battlezone, Half Life, DOOM, Skyrim, FTL, Mass Effect, Tomb Raider, XCOM, Dead Cells, and Halo are some favorites. How did you get here? Well over a decade of personal and professional passion and hard work in technology, and help from both friends and family. I started with a hand-me-down Compaq Deskpro that my Uncle brought home from a hospital’s refresh, and a random ATI GPU that my Dad got me in high school. The organizational layout I get from my Mom. Friends in college and from work got me into PC building, and either taught or inspired much of this station. Desktop Tower: Running case and motherboard from the original 2016 build, but upgrades made to all other components. No need to swap out the case; just keeping it clean. I don’t feel like swapping the motherboard and re-installing the OS, hence the older CPU platform and SATA SSD. Still, the i7-7700k performs very well in all the tasks I use the tower for (primarily gaming). Larger cooler will allow overclocking to further extend the useful lifespan. 16GB of RAM serves this purpose fine. RTX 2070 GPU was purchased in Feb 2020, just missing the GPU shortage. It runs most games at 144FPS/1080p resolution/Max details, so it’s staying as long as it lives. Storage is configured as boot SSD, 2 game SSDs (that were added later), and 2 HDDs for large storage in RAID1. Further upgrades to the fans (2 front and 1 bottom intake, 2 top and 1 rear as exhaust) and cable management allow for improved airflow and extended lifespan. The PSU was just upgrades to 750 watt gold for more efficiency and to allow later overclocking. Monitors: 3 different displays (obtained at different times on different budgets). The left and right are cheap/free (23in/27in, both 1080p/60hz) while the center display is a nice one (144hz/27in/1080p with adaptive sync. It was more cost-effective and space-efficient to get 3 medium displays than 1 or 2 large ones. As for use case, all of the displays’ input 1 is connected to the gaming tower, while all of the input 2 is connected to the work laptop’s docking station. This allows for streaming/gaming/system monitoring/chat/guides on the desktop, and notes/chat/email/productivity/browser on the work laptop. This is also the maximum amount of pixels that my work laptop can push Peripherals: I primarily use the Logitech G815 mechanical keyboard for both work and personal. It (along with the Logitech C920 webcam) are connected to a USB switch, hidden under the rightmost monitor. This allows these devices to be switched between the work and personal PCs. I use separate mice for each machine (MX Master for work, G502 for gaming) for different ergonomics and feature set. Both can be swapped interchangeably between machines. Audio: Since no headset that I’ve found has true multi-device support, each device has different audio needs, and windows audio switching is rough, I have multiple audio devices. The work laptop connects to the Cisco 562 Multibase headset on the left, which integrates seamlessly with WebEx for work, via a docking station connected to the laptop dock. The Logitech Pro X is my primary gaming headset, which I purchased for build, mic, and sound quality, along with solid battery life. It pairs wirelessly via a dongle to the gaming PC. I rarely use speakers, but I have a set of Logitech Z407s that were carefully mounted behind the monitor. They are connected via USB to the gaming PC Lighting: due to poor lighting conditions in my room and my job keeping me on video calls extensively, there are 2 key lights on either side of the main display. The brightness adjusters are mounted directly in front of the speakers, making it easy to adjust while on call, and avoiding a pricier webcam. Due to space constraints, the tripods were ziptied in place. Work laptop: As with many IT workers, I am now permanently remote. My employer provides a Lenovo X1 Carbon with a Thunderbolt dock. I have mounted it on a metal riser (with venting holes), and used this to add a laptop fan pad, keeping performance as high as possible. Furthermore, this metal rise allows for easy cable management and connections to all the additional peripherals (using every single port on the dock) for full connectivity. This does include ethernet for solid networking. The dock only provides 2 display outputs by default, so a USB – VGA converter was added for the 3rd monitor. Laptop screen is disabled when docked. Desk: This is a standing desk from VIVO to preserve personal health after long hours; it rises according to the presets on the button panel on the right side of the desk. Additional shelving and mounts were added to the top of the desk for more storage. A VIVO monitor arm holds 2 of the 3 monitors (the other does not have a VESA mount and sits on the shelf instead. Underneath the desk, a VIVO cable holder was added, and the power strip was mounted, allowing for the best possible cable management of the high number of devices. Charging cables were added at specific locations and held in place with cable clips for convenience. The entirety of the desk setup is backed up by a 1500V Cyberpower UPS, which can run all of the gear for at least 15 mins and up to 80 mins, in the event of a power loss. Various extension cables were ran to make power easy to reach while keeping cables out of the way. Mobility: The Surface Pro 7 is my personal laptop, used for personal computing elsewhere in the house or when traveling (I don’t use my work machine for personal tasks). When at the desk, it serves as an additional machine to accomplish personal business during work hours, or monitor chat while streaming/gaming. The surface was selected for extremely high portability since I have a powerful desktop. This model can charge with USB-C, which means I only need to travel with 1 charge. This pairs with the Google Pixel 3aXL as my phone (on a mount on the right), and the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 SE headphones for my primary mobile gear. More on this in another post Additional Furnishing: Since some of the furniture was acquired over time, matching cost and height was a challenge. Various cheap Amazon options were selected to give maximum storage space in this office corner, while keeping equipment accessible/off the floor, and providing some display capabilities for personal effects. Full list is in the spec list, although some of this is no longer available. On the other hand, the chair was an investment and selected for additional ergonomics. Walls are used to display Lego (Xpods specifically), personal keepsakes, my diploma, a plaque from work, and some of my favorite books. Networking: Due to my employment and the needs of my house, I had my ISP place a coax tap for broadband directly into the closet behind my office. I then added my own modem (ARRIS), and then router and switch from Ubiquity. 2 of the cables go directly to the work laptop and gaming desktop for maximum performance. 2 more runs go to Ubiquity Access Points elsewhere in the house for full coverage. 1 more goes to a 5-port flex mini switch for the entertainment center. The entire network setup is also backed up by a separate APC UPS, providing about 1hr of uptime.

  5. Hello everyone! I had a old 1966 Hickok sweep generator that didn't work so I decided to give it new life as my daily driver. test.mp4 Case operation: The Blanking and XTAL toggle switches are power and reset. The Marker MOD toggle switch controls the lights to the frequency dials and the Marker function selector switch controls the case fan speeds. There are lot of other switches to use, I kept them all functional, but not many other functions to hook them up to sadly. I started by disassembling the case, removing the components, and cleaning up the front plate. I then added LEDs to the frequency dials. Next I laid out out all my components and marked all the holes and cutouts. I used a nibbler cutout the PSU mount. The case was mostly made of copper and thin steel which made it great for cutting out custom holes. IO sheild cutout. I crafted custom IO shields and mounts inside the case out of perforated copper. IO shield mounted on the inside. I added 4-120mm Noctua fans. I created a template in CAD for drilling out the holes. All the cutouts are complete. Mounting the case fans, drives, and PSU. The bottom and right fans pull air in the case and the top two fans exhaust. I have two 4tb spin drives and Raid 1, one 1tb sdd, and two M.2 1tb drives on the mobo. Routing all the cables was a challenge in the size of a case but this build was about the exterior and not the interior. I could be a bit sloppy as long as it didn't mess the airflow too much. It lives!!! I wanted to use as many of the switches as I could in the build. I replaced the Blanking and XTAL toggle switch with momentary toggle switches and used them for power and reset. The Marker toggle switch was wired for the LEDs on the frequency dials. The old pilot light was connected to the chassis so I isolated it from the standoff and connected it to the power light on the motherboard. Lastly, I was using the Noctua FLX fans so I wired low speed adaptor in parallel with the power cable using the Marker function selector switch. Its nice to be able to have a quite case when I'm not gaming. Lastly, I installed two more USB ports on the top of the case for my headset and phone. Specs: MSI X570 MPG gaming AMD 5800x 32gb ram 3200mhz GTX 1080 (someday it will be a 6800xt) 2 - 1tb M.2 2 - 4tb spinners in Raid 1 1 - 1tb ssd
  6. I recently made a trip to Ikea in Montreal (closest location to VT), and got myself 2x Alex Drawers and a Karlby countertop (72'') - love it. I currently own 2x Dell S2721DGF monitors, and plan to keep them for quite some time. These monitors have 4 USB ports on them, 2 near the display port / HMDI, 2 more on the lower left. I don't need to use all of them, but I do use some, and cable management on the mount would be nice, even if basic. There is potential for a 3rd monitor (another Dell, or perhaps a higher-spec primary down the road), but not now, I just want to leave room for it. Sound Bar will be placed under / right in front of the monitors, centered (sound bar is on the way) I currently have about 1'' of space between the desk and the wall - willing to expand this if needed, but I want the monitors to be pretty close to wall, definitely no more than 8'' out. Mounts style is clamp to desk preferred, as I don't have studs and wall mounting isn't desired in this case. Ideal if monitors can rotate at least 90°, as bullet hells are beautiful on those monitors when vertical (mmmMMMmm, Ikaruga). I probably want a mic arm too at some point, so if that needs to be considered in this space, jus stating so now. I'm not sure if I should go single mount, dual mount, or what. I've read very mixed reviews about the Karbly supporting weight in the middle, due to sag, it not being solid would (small portion is solid, then veneer), etc. I've also seen many people do just fine here, I'm just cautious. I'm also not sure if I should mount closer to the drawers, and have the monitors meet in the middle (taking stress off the counter), or if they'd be fine in the middle. 2 single mounts gives a bit more control, and less weight centered on a specific spot. Current setup: Any recommendations on specific options with this Karlby counter top, any cable management tips with this desk setup (just something that hangs down the back would be great, not looking to cut / drill), and general single vs dual, brand, etc, would be greatly appreciated. Almost done this setup, can't wait to mount!
  7. Hello guys, Could you please give me some advice on Multi-Display systems? I'm a gamer and I have an Asus PG279Q monitor. I see some people have multi-display systems and it looks so cool. Does any of you guys have it? What do you suggest? Is it practical to use multi-monitors or a focus diversion? If you guys suggest, please make some recommendations. What monitors should I pick, should i go 4k etc. Thanks for the help.

  10. After deciding to turn my in house office into a playroom for the new daughter its forced me to be even more productive and turn one of our smaller garages from a junkheap into a little den of tranquility... We have a table which I made myself from offcuts from the local DIY Store and a desk frame I picked up at the local skip - £5 Blue Carpet from offcuts in our office - £0 Paint £5 Office chair from office which was being skipped for falling below "ergonomic parameters" - £0 23" 1080p 60Hz Monitor again... destined for the skip from work - £0 2 seat Leather Sofa - £0 we were going to throw it out so rescuing it for some casual gaming seemed the most sensible idea.. Getting it wired up with Ethernet - £10 so new office for 20 quid... Not too shabby! Still need to get the other Rig hooked up and the second monitor in as well as put up some shelving for the plethora of component boxes that's been accumulated... all in all though... Im pleased. Although I think I might have a fight on my hands for the Sofa...

  12. I have tricked out my home office battlestation with all of the bells and whistles so I can play almost any game at all but the highest levels. I love my battlestation. Yet I spend a great deal of time with my family in the living room away from my office and away from my desktop. I would like to be able to play some games while in the living room, but I don't want to give up on the quality of the game play. Should I buy a gaming laptop or buy a slim laptop and stream from the custom PC in my office? If you say BUY, what gaming laptop would you recommend? If you say STREAM, what slim laptop would you recommend AND how would you recommend I stream to this laptop? Guidelines for my system selection 17 inch screen- I'm old, so I need a 17 inch screen to be able to see what I am doing. Ryzen- I've been on Team Red for almost 20 years, so Ryzen is a must. $1000 to $1500- I'd like to be around $1,000 (US), could go to $1500 with little convincing, and could even go north of $1500 if it really wiggled. Prefer 1660 Green team or 570 Red Team (either could work) 16GB+ of Ram (I can plug in a stick of ram without loosing a finger) Thanks everyone!
  13. Hi! I'm planning on building a 24-core, dual xeon workstation later this week. With future plans to expand to quad-sli, watercooling. Also future plans to upgrade to dual 22-core Xeon E5-2699 V4 (although this is definitely a future future plan...) Was a custom build or a Mac Pro... so here we are! Would there be any interest in a build-log? If there is I'll be sure to document the journey! Also, any questions re the build or anything else feel free to ask below! George!
  14. sorry for bad pic. I am going to add shelves in between the two top sound proofing foam things.
  15. Hello all, I'm starting a new work log on a update I've been planning to my titan build: Which you can find here, called COSMOS. The goal of this built was to: One, update some of my aging components, some where about four years old by the complete of titan, and two, update some of the features of the case I was either unable to complete during titans construction or had not though to incorporate. The case's cooling components are for the most part unchanged, except for the water-blocks that needed to be upgraded along with their hardware components. Below is a list of the upgraded and added hardware for the new Cosmos build: Upgraded: [CPU]: Intel i7 - 8700k [GPU]: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 Ti [MOBO]: Asus Strix Z370-G [RAM]: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 2x8 16GB -3000 Added: [NVMe]: Samsung 960 Evo 500GB The main of the updates of the case itself will be the inclusion of a vertical GPU mount. I have a quick Solid Works screenshot to demonstrate what I'm looking to at the bottom of this paragraph. I noticed that with titan there was a lot of empty room created by the graphic card and the tubes started to look awkwardly placed, so I started to work on a vertical mount solution. The problem here is that the weight of the card isn't supported by the bracket alone on the back panel so I've got a couple of ideas of how to mount it properly while still allowing me to move the case without worrying about the GPU coming loose. Besides the main update I'm looking to do two more things: First, find a better way to manage all the cables, and find some routing solutions for them. I'm thinking of upgrading the PSU to a smaller size and reorganizing the cables giving me more room on the bottom for cable management, but I will see what I'll do after the GPU is properly mounted. Second, find a very simple solution to enclosing the case. At the moment the case is open with no side panels. I do like the way the build looks without any side panels at all but the case was originally built with minimal air flow needed in the chassis as to prevent dust. So I would like to figure out a way to enclose the case while keeping the look of the case the same and integrating some kind of airflow for some of the passive components on the motherboard. While building this rig I've also decided to work on a battlestation to match it. The battlestation for COSMOS will have the same theme as the rig and will be designed after it so I'll be posting the worklog for the battlestation here along side it. I hope you guys enjoy the build, I'll be trying to provide updates as often as I can and try to keep everything organized at the bottom of this post if your just looking for updates: Thanks all. 18. Hey all! Apologies in advance for garbage formatting, metric units and lengthy post, just a senior student asking for the kindness and helping hand of you all <3 (TL;DR at the bottom) I'm an Australian Year 12 student making a custom PC-In-A-Desk as my major work for one of my subjects (Design & Technology). I have saved up a lot in preparation for this project and my budget for the entire project is $7000 AUD give or take (prefer to save money in places still). The desk will become my workstation and gaming station for many years to come, I'm aiming for longevity here, Something that I won't have to be swapping out parts/upgrading from for atleast 4 years or so. The desk itself will be (apologies for metric lengths) 180cm long, 75cm wide and around 74cm high (legs of desk are 58cm high, taking into consideration my own leg room and computer cavity etc in total it will be around 74cm high) and feature a glass top in the middle with a size of 136.4cm x 60cm. The desk itself I am currently in the process of making. I have 3D modeled the main jist of my desk in CAD, (will figure out fan holes, entire layout etc. after its constructed): Screenshots of desk here: https://imgur.com/a/ANUqZ I don't want to spend more than $700AUD on the desk itself, already between the MDF ($200 AUD) and customly made glass ($300 AUD) i've hit $500 and I'm not sure how much all the LED strips, paint etc. will cost me. more info on this further down. AIM: Longevity is key here. The computer I want to be able to handle high end games without struggle (all AAA games, potentially at 4k someday when 1080p dies), Some minor 3D work and Graphical stuffs, 2 Monitor setup that I don't have to upgrade/fix/touch/massage for the next 4-5 years. A desk that looks damn good, With its RGB glory and beefy but silent operation. Okay so, I've divided my budget into rough parts, I already know for the most part what parts I want and have done extensive looking and I feel these all suit my needs/wants. I have only bought the wood and a few tools currently, most of the physical work I will utilize my schools woodwork rooms for. Asking for suggestions on this, all and any help/opinions are appreciated! ROUGH TOTAL: $6256 AUD PC Itself: ~$3370 AUD CPU: Intel Core i7 8700K Hex Core LGA 1151-2 3.70 GHz Unlocked CPU Processor ($510~, pretty firm on this cpu, should be good for 5+ years without upgrading right?) Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero Z370 LGA 1151-2 ATX Motherboard ($460~, open to suggestion of other mobos but I like the look and pre mounted i/o shield, 2 assignable rgb headers etc.) Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB GDDR5X Founders Edition Video Card ($1200~, pretty firm on this too, should last me long time and is capable of everything) RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (4x 8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz Memory ($670~ don't really mind what mhz its at, just looking for bling and 32gb memory) SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB ($230~, not really too fussed over the m.2 ssd hype. would prefer a 1TB SSD but the price kinda deters me abit lmao) HDD: WD WD4004FZWX 4TB Black 3.5" 7200RPM ($284~, again open to suggestions, want to avoid seagate as their hard drives sometimes die outta nowhere and I want longevity, seagate scares me ) Power Supply: Corsair HX-1000i ATX ($300~, should be able to handle the overclocked cpu and gpu and all the other rgb vomit right? open to suggestions here too) Water Cooling, inc. fans: ~$1136 AUD Fans: 4x Cooler Master MasterFan Pro 120 Air Balance RGB Fan ($80~, for intake, aura sync compatible and am pretty firm on these for intake) 6x Cooler Master MasterFan Pro 120 Air Pressure RGB Fan ($120~, for the 2 360mm radiators, pretty firm on these too for the rgb aura sync vomit) Radiators: 2x EK-CoolStream PE 360 ($240~,want to go with EKWB, they the best for water cooling) CPU Block: EK-Supremacy EVO - Gold (entire loop will be un-dyed, clear tubed distilled water, doesn't have to be gold, is just more of a want, nickel or copper will be fine) GPU Block: EK-FC GeForce GTX FE - Nickel ($150~) Backplate: EK-FC1080 GTX Backplate - Black ($40~) Pumps: 2x EK-XTOP Revo D5 PWM - Plexi (incl. sleeved pump) ($320~, pumps so expensive , figured 1 pump running 2 radiators and the big length of the loop would be abit weak so I went with two) Reservoir: EK-RES X3 400 ($90~, one long res with silver coils inside will look cool) Tubing: 2x EK-DuraClear 11,1/15,9mm 3M RETAIL ($60~, hardline tubing may look nicer but cutting it all and doing hardline tubing myself gives me nightmares lol) Fittings: 14x EK-ACF Fitting 12/16mm - Black ($126~, will change size of tubing etc if anyone suggests I should, just figured an OD of 16mm is easier for me to drill many holes for all the tubing in my desk) Other accessories and such: this area is incomplete cause it'll include price of distilled water, silver coil etc. and anything else i might need related to cooling and such. will add to this as I go. RGB Vomit (discluding fans & ram) $400? This is something i'll probably decide and look into once my desk is actually built, from there ill figure out where i want my strips and stuffs, really prefer and want to go out of my own way to make everything compatible with aura sync, more than 2 softwares for my RGB goodness annoys me at the thought. Physical Desk: This is gonna be a crude list bc ive bought a bunch of crap already for this but I felt like id include it 3x 2400mm x 1200mm x18mm MDF: $200AUD Custom cut glass (been quoted different prices for this ranging from $200 to $400, I dont want to use one going on gumtree(australian craigslist) or whatever. I want my own, no scratches etc.) 121mm Holesaw ($50, this thing was hard to find and is expensive just for a hole saw, i cri ) A stupid amount of screws: $5 (lol) Paint & incidentals & other crap i might need: $300? Front USB/headphone jack panel which I have no idea where i'd buy but I know I want one, that way I dont have to reach around to the back of my desk and plugin a USB or whatever. Power button (figured id just make my own, splicing it together with some CableMod cables sounds easy enough for me) Cables (CableMod sponsor me lol): $400 AUD? I plan to figure out the exact length of cables and such that I need when I finish constructing my desk for the most part, I'll do all the measurements, hoping you guys help me out with that, especially with fan hubs compatible with Aura Sync and the stupid amount of LED strips and all my water cooling crap. Thank god CableMod exists because finding extensions for all the different cables I need smells like a nightmare) Peripherals & Such: This is where I ask for help/opinions. I don't want to spend $600+ per monitor. I am not sure if 1080p 144hz monitors last the years as 4k is the thing nowadays. I currently use a dual 24' 60hz setup and while I love having 2 screens, the 60hz part bothers me a lot. I would rather have 144hz 1080p monitors over say 60hz 4k monitors. 1440p 144hz dual monitors smells really nice to me but the cost of that deters me a lot to be honest. I do not want 3 monitors, 3 monitors is too much for my eyes. I'll only ever need 2, 3 is (ironically) overkill in my opinion. If you guys think otherwise please let me know. In terms of mice, keyboard and headset I am happy with my g502 mouse, Am looking for a good preferably 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound AND wireless headset (currently have my eye on the hyperX cloud flight, it just lacks the audio i want but its wireless and nice). The current keyboard I have is the Razer Deathstalker. It's an old, membrane flat keyed keyboard that I've been using since 2012 and I still love it but I need an upgrade. I NEED silent keys, I can't stand the loudness of mechanical keys so I'm currently eyeballing the G910 Orion Spectrum. I still want mechanical keys, just silent ones. Am very open to suggestions for all these, please. Thankyou if you read everything. I appreciate it heaps. TL;DR: Aussie High School student with more cash than an 18 year old student should have is building a custom PC In a Desk for his HSC Design & Technology Major Work, that he will use for gaming, web browsing and some 3D work and Graphical imaging stuffs. He has very messily listed his needs and wants and is asking for suggestions and any help one has to offer.
  19. Buy Origin PCs on Amazon: http://geni.us/6Vbk29 We built a $15,000 battle station with a custom DIY desk to house our new Origin Genesis gaming PC. I'm never leaving the office.
  20. What non-tech items in your setup do you have that just seem to make life infinitely easier? One of the most useful things for me is one of these desk-caddy holders (https://www.amazon.com/Stock-Your-Home-Electronics-Organizer/dp/B000Y1L1MQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1472005349&sr=8-5&keywords=electronic+charging+station). Super useful for holding all of the miscellaneous bullshit on my desk.
  21. So this is my setup and I think all I'm missing right now is a pair of good white speakers and a boom arm for my mic and an HD camera. What else can you suggest?
  22. I'm building a desk pc that will be largely inspired by l3p (Peter Brands) and red harbinger (more specifically the cross desk). It will feature 2 systems One for gaming and video editing and a second for streaming and maybe some 3D modeling (perhaps some lan via a HDMI to a 65" TV I have near my setup area). Everything will be liquid cooled, I haven't decided between PETG or Acrylic yet (I don't want to do any softer tubing cuz hardline looks sexy as hell). I'm thinking 3 rads 690ml (something like this). I'm also thinking 2x 480 rad's (not sure of thickness) and 2 360 rads. I have sketches here. Some more ideas I had were a basement under the main compartment with like Hydraulic things to keep the hatch from hitting the floor, the basement would be for any motherboard cables and power supply cables. I also was thinking of a separate compartment by the back end (as seen in sketches) for the power supply and a grommet that goes to the top of the desk for monitor cables and keyboard/mouse etc. I have 3D models that can be opened in sketchup (or sketchup viewer) here. Sorry for the rant please leave any suggestions. Edit: The desk will be made out of maple plywood by the way (can get other materials additional to that but I already do own a decent amount of maple plywood) Forgot to say it will have a glass top as well Edit 2: Deciding to call it project Avian, idk why but I like the name, if anyone has any name suggestions let me know . 23. I'm looking to buy a cheap, usable desk in the near future. I've seen people use folding tables before and so far that's my plan. But I don't know if there are any safety risks behind using a folding table. Ergonomics and cable management don't bother me. I've sat at a folding table before and it was the most comfortable sitting experience of my life. Does anybody here use a folding table for their desk? Have you ever encountered static build-up? Is is sturdy enough? Is there anything you recommend as far as cheap desks go that AREN'T used? This is my first post here. Thanks in advance!
