  1. Budget: $1000-$1500 USD, but willing to go higher if I must. Location: Utah, USA Software: AutoCAD --- I mainly work in 2D for editing large floor plans, rack elevations, and wiring diagrams, but my web-based theater design software (The Cinema Designer) occasionally requires me to open up and work with 3D files using AutoCAD. Microsoft Visio (desktop) D-Tools System Integrator (desktop) Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop Adobe Premiere Pro (on rare occasions) Adobe Audition (on rare occasions) Modus VR * * I don't plan on running Modus VR for at least a year or two. It's residential and commercial 3D rendering focused on AV systems. All they recommend on their website is to get a good "gaming" computer and a VR headset. Probably high CPU clock, single-threaded, with a decent GPU, but for now I'm fine keeping the GPU as minimal as required for AutoCAD. Pre-Built or Custom: I don't necessarily care whether it's a pre-built or a custom build I assemble myself, but I'd like to get this thing up and running within 15-24 days at most. I've never built a PC before, but if the overall price and shipping time is drastically better, and if warranties on the most important parts are excellent, I'll totally do it. Other Hardware: I have two LG UltraFine 4K displays and a Thunderbolt 4 NAS hooked up via my Anker Thunderbolt 4 dock. I tried the online configurator from XoticPC, but the only Thunderbolt 4 option required the Asus ProArt Creator motherboard which seemed really expensive. I've read online that a Thunderbolt 4 card is much cheaper, but I've also read that those cards don't always work reliably, and the set up documentation leaves a lot to be desired. I figured I'd see what people here recommended. Maybe I'll have to skip Thunderbolt 4 altogether and downgrade to USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 which means replacing my dock, lol. I don't care if it's AMD or Intel.
  2. Budget (including currency): $1,250, but under $1,000 preferred Country: Merica Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: autoCAD Civil 3D _______________________________________________________________________________ Greetings Community, I am working to build a system that will be used for autoCAD Civil 3D and other surveying related programs. The most prevalent part of this build is the possibility of needing "certified graphics hardware." (This would be cards like the Radeon Pro W7500 etc.--check the link above.) However, I am not convinced that this build will actually need a certified GPU, as I have a friend that also uses Civil 3D for surveying on a RTX 3060 mobile without any known issues. I have compiled some possible builds, and I would love to hear whether AMD or Intel would be better to go with because, I am frankly confused. My understanding is that while Civil 3D benefits from a decent GPU, it is primarily CPU bound, and thus something equivalent to a 3060 should be more than adequate (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!). An additional note is that this build will need to be reliability focused, as the individual using this would like to use it for a very, very long time. To put it into perspective, he is just now retiring is XPS from 2004 (20 YEARS OLD!). 3. Hey everyone, I'm going to college next semester, and I'm looking at laptops. I really want an ultraportable laptop with extremely long battery life and a 2 in 1 design, and a lot of them are with integrated graphics. What I'm wondering is if AutoCAD and other engineering programs would be able to run on Intel XE? I have a beefy desktop and a large server that I could potentially remote into for AutoCAD if need be, but I'm wondering if it's a small project, could I easily run it on AutoCAD?
  4. I was looking for a new starter laptop for CAD work. I don't know much about laptops; the price variation is just beyond me. My budget can reach upto 60000₹. That would be ~$650+'import taxes in India'. My priority is towards performance and build quality. There won't be any gaming on it. Sleek design, touch screen, high refresh rates, ultrabooks, fingerprint scanners are all fancy stuff I don't need. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  5. My main rig is used mainly for photography work and some CAD work (I'm an engineer but mostly use this for personal stuff), I DO NOT use it for gaming (haters gonna hate). I built my PC a couple of years back and the spec isn't top end, but it was good at the time and was one of the best for single thread processing (as that was where photoshop got the most benefit). - i7 7700K OC to ~5gHz Watercooled AiO (may get upgraded later) - Asus RoG Maximus IX Code Motherboard - 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3000MHz CL15 - 2TB Sabrent Rocket NVME 4 - 3TBx2 Raid Drives + another 16TB on TrueNAS server (just built :-p) - Gigabyte GTX1070 windforce OCii 8GB DDR5 Driving 2x 27" Benq 4k Monitors I would like to transfer that Graphics card to another system and get something better suited to what I use this one for, my Camera is a Canon 5DS with 50Mp sensor so pretty big files, especially when you're stacking images. Some of my CAD workalthough mostly hobby stuff can get pretty big and complex, though I don't do a lot of "photo realistic" rendering i certainly do work in 3D almost entirely. So working to a budget of £400 (about $550?) what is going to be my best banng for buck performance? 1. Keep the GTX1070 because in that budget, not much else will give more performace and get something budget friendly for my other rig (which is going to be used mostly for streaming and some video decoding)? 2. Get a Quadro K5000 and a Tesla K80 or something similar for the VRAM? (about £300-400 total possible) 3. Get a slightly higher end GPU (NVidia or AMD?) than the GTX1070, but will it give me much more performance? 4. Stretch the budget a little to get???????? Help, advice, comments welcome Steve
  6. Budget (including currency): well... two budgets: sub $1000(USD) and $2000(USD) Country: The not-so-united, United States of America Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AutoCad, RDR2, Other details: I'm a Logitech nerd and run both their keyboards and mice, as well as speakers. Currently running a 1920x1080 LG monitor, at some point I want to upgrade to a 4k monitor but... that's for later. I'm in need of this upgrade because at the end of the summer I'll be starting a trade program that requires I learn to use, and actually use, AutoCad for creating blueprints and models so I'll be forced to use both the 2d and 3d workspace. I'd also like to be able to run RDR2 and other current generation games at moderate to high settings. If I can get a system to work smoothly with AutoCad and other modeling software for under $1000 I'd be REALLY happy, but I think that's probably unreasonable so my current hard budget is $2000. My current computer is a mid 2015 MacBook pro (go ahead yuck it up) that continues to serve me well... its just not keeping up as much as I need or would like it to. This will be my first PC build. I'm completely ambivalent about aesthetics, and am more than open to pre-used hardware (so long as I have a reasonable expectation of it actually functioning). Room to upgrade further would be ideal, but not a hard requirement. To be clear, so long as I'm not spending more for it, I'd like to avoid RGB like the plague. I'm also very open to building with the intent of upgrading later, so things like saving on RAM and storage capacity are very much so on the table. Oh, perhaps some context if you are not aware... AutoCad is a bit of a nightmare to run due to the way it has been updated over the years... its highly inefficient to run (This was an explanation given to me by a college professor, so I think there's a 50:50 chance of it being true).
  7. Hi! I'm moving to linux, and managed to make almost everything to my linking in PopOS! but I haven't found anything (free) to at least open dwg files. This is crucial to me and my workplace. Besides this, linux is decent so far. Thank you in advance.
  8. Hello, We have two of these laptops with us, both are struggling to run and manage resources when running AutoCAD, mostly hanging on random actions. I have had a nightmare identifying these laptops, the sticker on the body states it's a Vostro 15 3100 but system info shows Vostro 3500. I ran the crucial upgrade assistant and discovered that it has a max RAM cap of 8GB?! The Vostros we have are the i5 variant, that may have influence on the cap but I have no idea? Is it stupid to try and fit another 8GB in? it has a free slot. How can I find the exact model we have in our hands? The bottom only has a serial number, when googled brings up irrelevant searches. Physical sticker and sysinfo are in conflict. Side question, what determines RAM caps? Is it the memory chips on the mobo capping out their lanes?
  9. Budget (including currency): £500 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AutoCAD Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Boss wants me to build systems based off an existing system we have, it has a Xeon W-1250 in it and I can't for the life of me source this chip from anywhere! Does anyone have a reliable vendor for these server/workstation cpu's? or someone point me in the right direction of the consumer equivalent. I've put budget 500 for the cpu, not the system.
  10. Budget (including currency): I would like to budget around a 1,000 dollars but am able to include couple of hundred later for upgrading the GPU Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AutoCAD, Revit, Steam, Xbox, AutoCAD render, Civil3d Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I'm entering a theatre production program next fall and will need a beefier computer (the whole set-up, I have NO parts currently other than a wireless mouse) than the laptop I currently have (an HP Pavilion laptop, bought in 2018, has Intel UHD Graphics 620 and Intel Core i7 - 8550U at 1.8GHz/1.99GHz, RAM 8GB, and 64-bit OS). Not sure how much of that info is needed but the requirements for my new computer are below. If I say anything that doesn't make sense or if what I need is way out of my budget I do apologize, I don't know much about computers and their parts and what they should cost; I've done minimal research. But I do have plenty of time to save up some money if the build I need is over my current budget. Ideally it's as close to $800 as possible! Budget (including currency): $800-$900 max Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I'll be using it as a workstation to run programs such as Vectorworks and AutoCAD. I may use other similar programs as well. I also anticipate having lots of tabs open at once for long periods of time for schoolwork, as well as streaming video/music and using Zoom. It will not really be used for serious gaming, I would only ever play Minecraft on it (and I would also use Discord). Other details: My preferences and technical requirements for Vectorworks and AutoCAD 3.0 GHz or better Intel i7 -or- AMD Ryzen 7 with 8 cores or better. A dedicated OpenGL 2.1 compatible graphics card with 8GB of VRAM or more. RAM 32GB minimum. I'm wanting a monitor with 1920x1080 resolution, minimum size of 20in (24in preferred), with speakers built in. But if it's cheaper/better to buy a speaker separately that's fine too. I don't really know what refresh rate and fps would be ideal. Whatever will work sufficiently that's in/near budget. For a keyboard I would most prefer a silver/gray one with backlit keys (white preferred but RBG is fine) that is NOT tenkeyless. I don't have a preference if its wired or wireless. I'll need a tower/case as well but I don't want anything flashy with a side window or any crazy lights. I don't know what size I'll need, just whatever will fit all the required parts and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. Color preference is silver/gray but black is fine if it keeps me within budget. I know I'm leaving out some other parts but I have no specific/known requirements for those If you need any more information from me I'll answer as soon as I can!
  12. Hi all... Been watching LTT vids for years but new to the forums so first off, hello :) I have a good understanding of PC's but the company i work for have recently asked me to look into upgrading our work PC's and was hoping someone here could give me some advice regards to GPU. We use AutoCAD, designing timber frame buildings in 3D and our current spec of PC is a quadro M2000 GPU, an intel xeon e5-1620 v4 CPU and 16GB of RAM which does struggle a bit when changing from wireframe to realistic etc. As a gamer PC enthusiast my thoughts for a new PC would be going for the latest gen AMD cpu, Ryzen 9 5900x, uping to 32gb of RAM and going for a RTX3000 series GPU. From what i can tell a 3070 would be sufficient enough for what we need but "workstation" pre built PC's i am coming across online suggest using a quadro again and a company we had a quote from suggested a quadro RTX 4000 which from what i can tell is older and costs more then the 3070, but would it have any benefits over a 3070 for AutoCAD? I have seen posts online from people saying the quadro is just an expensive name and 2080's etc. are able to out perform them in most cases. My main concern is guiding my boss into spending £2k on a pretty decent "gaming" PC but it not being too great for its intended "workstation" purpose. Appreciate any help in advance and welcome any recomendations you may have, thanks.
  13. Budget (including currency): 800 - can be stretched but less = better Country: Slovenia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: autoCAD - 2d, 3d, civil, rev (whatever that means lol) Other details Friend asked me to build him a new PC for work - he is working in construction and mostly uses AutoCAD. He is currently using a Huawei matebook 13 pro (i5-8265U, Nvidia MX150, 8GB Ram) and is having issues with anything but 2d. Autocad hardware requirements are more or less pointless so I have no idea what I'm looking for really, not even sure if autocad prefers CPU or GPU. Any help is appreciated.
  14. hello guys, i have a computer with i7 3770k ,16 gb and gtx970 with an ssd. is it sufficient enough for autocad 2020 specifically? i also have a laptop hp elitebook 840 G2 with i7 4600u - 8gb ram - radeon graphics and ssd is it also sufficient for autocad 2020? thanks for any help ! cheers
  15. Budget $1200: Just for tower Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Workbench/Gaming Autodesk: Autocad Mudbox Solid Works ---------------------- COD warzone Cyberpunk Doom Open world games Other details Ryzen 7 3600x 32GB 3600Mhz Radeon Pro WX 4100 Radeon RX 5600 XT ASUS TUF X570 - Plus ATX SSD WD Black 500gb Mid Tower ATX case I will decide on after I finalize the build. Is my processor over doing it for the WX 4100 or under? I ask this because the best Ryzen for the RX 5600XT is the Ryzen 5 3600. Saving money with out too much comprimise is important. I am not designing massive sky scrapers. I will be doing 3D sculpting and designing Scifi ships and Digital art work for personal use. Some engineering application will be utilized with this PC like small components combined to the equivalent of the size of a motorcycle or car. As size reference and part count. If you tell me just to get the best of everything I don't need, I will just ignore your post.
  16. Budget (including currency): $1200-$1400 in random purchases here and there as I watch prices of things (build sometime next year) Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AutoCAD (no rendering, but but heavy hatching at times), Word, Excel, Foxit PDF, internet, possibly light gaming but probably not. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Currently using a 2018 HP laptop Upgraded to 256GB SSD, 16g Ram running to a Hub to project on an LG 34" 21:9 2560x1080 monitor, Razer Viper Mini mouse, and Razer Huntsman Elite Keyboard. I haven't built of followed any computer part trends since around 2005, so a lot of what is needed now is more complicated then it use to be. I am looking to build a Small Form Factor to run AutoCAD primarily with no rendering, but sometimes I do have heavy hatching in a job, and maybe play a game or two, but probably not as I don't currently play any online games as it is. I am going to be keeping the same monitor, mouse an keyboard I am currently using with my Laptop. I have already bought the Cool Master NR200p in White. (Kind of wanted to do a white build, but that was looking expensive, so now I call it a Panda Build) For AutoCAD, the minimums are Windows 10 or 11 Pro 2.5GHz processor (3.0 Ghz Recommended) 8gb Ram (16gb recommended) 1gb GPU with 29gb/s bandwidth (4gb with 106 gb/s bandwidth) I went to PCpartspicker to help find parts and came up with this list. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KB6fnt I don't need or really want and RGB components if it can be helped. I do need a motherboard that has good WIFI as that is how I will be connecting to the Internet. I also want the board to have a second SSD slot for a storage drive. I am not sure how to determine between and 4.0 and 3.0 SSD drive, so have no idea if I picked the right one. Other then that, is there anything I have selected that has something better or a better combo of things? Thank you all in advance. William
  17. I'm building my roommate a PC, and we've hit a price spike between paychecks, so I'm wondering if we can save a bit of money by getting 2 RX580s instead of a 5700xt. For context, his use case is Autocad and light 3D modeling, with a little bit of gaming on the side. This is the 580 I'm considering https://pcpartpicker.com/product/y2DzK8/sapphire-radeon-rx-580-8gb-pulse-video-card-11265-05 This is the 5700xt I'm considering https://pcpartpicker.com/product/6kdrxr/gigabyte-radeon-rx-5700-xt-8-gb-gaming-oc-video-card-gv-r57xtgaming-oc-8gd The core question is what the performance impact of 2 RX580s in Crossfire would be compared to a single RX5700xt? Also, if anyone has the time to explain the reasoning to me, I'd greatly appreciate it!
  18. Budget (including currency): $1200 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: most likely used for rendering and working on CAD (computer assisted design) models.I usually have two monitors plugged in (32"+24") and thinking about getting a third. This will also most likely be hooked up to a 4k TV via HDMI. would like to build a modest true mid tier rig that would handle most of these tasks. 3-D modeling > Gaming+Streaming YES: Autocad, Revit, Rhino, Vectorworks, V-Ray, Keyshot, Lumion, Adobe Suites (ID,Illus,Photo mostly) NO: video encoding, heavy gaming (like AAA games are fun but meh not really a huge gamer, like I'll check out a game but that's about it) MAYBE: very VERY light gaming (mostly free games like LFD2, LOL), Streaming, Virtual Reality Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Current running: (8 years old) CPU: i7-3770k GPU: Gigabyte Radeon 7870 HD (2GB) RAM: 8GB 1333 (2x4GB) STOR: 512gb crucial (SSD) + 7200RPM WD 2TB Black Option 1: (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MdjYFG) CPU: R5 3600 GPU: RTX 2060 S (8gb) RAM: 32GB 3200 cl14 (4x8gb) STOR: 512gb ADATA XPG (NVME) + 7200RPM WD 2TB Black would like to experience this pcie 4.0 stuff and would like to have a small upgrade pathway if possible. I know there is no such thing as future proofing but if there is a good option in this budget I'm all for ideas. Much thanks!
  19. Budget (including currency): 250.000Ft-400.000Ft (Hungarian Forint) = 800USD-1300USD Country: Hungary Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016-2018, AutoCAD 2018 Other details Hi everyone! I'm looking for a build to replace my father's old workstation for a new one. Currently, his "fastest" workstation at his office has an i5-2400, 16GB of RAM and a Quadro FX 3800. Of course, with a WD Black HDD. It's struggling with 2D basic utility drawings which takes up about 5-15MB/file, so nothing heavy. When other things are running in the background, it's nearly useless. (I know, an SSD would be a big upgrade but AutoCAD is still lagging badly.) Currently, he's using 2 FHD monitors which won't be upgraded in the near future. Maybe after 5 years, 4K displays will be more consumer-friendly and affordable. Nothing 3D or very heavy task. He wants a future-proof computer, so he asked for his IT guy. He offered my dad a 3300USD workstation which is in my opinion, totally unnecessary. That one would have an i9-7920x, 64GB of RAM and a Quadro P4000. Now, he also sent me a link for an HP Z Tower G4 which is running on a Xeon-E-2274G, 32GB of RAM and a Quadro P2200. (+ 512GB PCIe SSD) I couldn't find price for that but with the same CPU, 16GB of RAM, half the storage and with integrated graphics, it costs between 1500-2000USD. This looks good but very expensive. I searched for an image what my father draws usually. Or something similar, maybe 2x bigger. (I will search for more similar drawings if needed or link one of his work if possible.) As I know, AutoCAD is not really a multithreaded application, so as I understand, the Single-thread performance on passmark is a very good point of the performance of that CPU. Now, I also made a list what I would buy which is this: Ryzen 3 3300X start with 16GB of RAM and upgrade that later if needed and a Quadro P2200. The other parts doesn't matter for now. (SSD, nice PSU, basic case, motherboard with 4 RAM slots, it doesn't need to be fancy, just a basic turnon-work-turnoff) As I checked the scores and comparisons, the Ryzen has a better single-core performance. I checked it on Passmark and on UserBenchmark. The Ryzen's TDP is half of the i9's. During these drawings, I don't think that the i9 would have a huge advantage at that price point. My father runs a single-employee business (him), so it would be good if the workstation was not really expensive. Thank you very much for any help or advice! Please, correct me if I'm wrong somewhere!
  20. Budget (including currency): < 2700 (excluding taxes) (CAD) Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: FPS (COD), Battlefield, WOW, Diablo 3 (and 4), Autocad, Fusion 360 Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Currently have I no PC, parts, peripherals, etc. Clean slate build from the ground up. I plan on spending roughly 700 CAD peripherals to support the build leaving roughly 2000 on to build the pc (plus tax). I plan on buying in the next 1-3 months. In the future would I would like the ability to run dual monitors (when using specific program like auto cad etc but not all the time). I would like the pc to be somewhat upgradeable so I can keep it semi-capable for the next 1-4 years minimum.
  21. So im helping a friend build a computer, She has a pretty tight budget of $1000 Cad for the whole computer. She needs a monitor, keyboard, wireless card, plus the computer in that budget. Although i have a copy of windows 10 She would prefer a smaller pc, like a micro atx build. She is doing a design coarse that is mainly using Revit and some other autocad programs i've been out of the loop when it comes to pc parts the last year so any help would be appreciated.
  22. Hi there, For starters i'm in Australia so Internet speed is so so. I have a peculiar issue with saving files on our office server. This issue is not consistent, it happens at random times on a variety of large and small AutoCAD files. When saving the AutoCAD file or dwg. file, it goes missing and re-appears (sometimes) on a Server in a different location. We have four different servers in four different locations, all Data synced so that all the Job files are the same at all locations. When accessing a file at any location, the file is locked and cannot be opened at another location BUT it is still visible in the Job folder. I am not the the Network administrator, I have questioned the network admin and he hasn't replied with a fix to any of my emails. Can anyone give me some advice for this issue?
  23. So my mom has been looking to upgrade her crappy 300 toshiba laptop and she consulted me about so i told her i could help her out building it for her, but now that i am not building a gaming pc for once, its very odd taking such a different approach. other things she's an architect and uses autocad very regularly, as well as photoshop and illustrator i have no idea what mobo or gpu to use rig must last at least 2 years for her to make good use of it relative budget: $800? but dont restrict yourself, if you need to go higher or lower its totally fine, i just need a good value proposition. very much appreciate thean feedback and thks for taking your time to help out
  24. I know OS and other application software's necessarily go into the SSD for faster loading, My current build houses one WD Caviar black 3TB and SAMSUNG 850 EVO 500 GB SSD. Each does have two partitons. My build is primarily a workstation for meeting the rendering, BIM needs and also for editing. If Adobe Photoshop, Premier, AE installed on 2nd partition of SSD, where the scratch disks should be configured. Installing the same on C:// drive of SSD is recommended or can I just proceed with the second partition instead. This affects also for installing the SketchUp, AutoCAD and Rhino. Thanks.
