Hi, I have recently set up a Jellyfin server and want to accompany this with a good surround sound system. Ideally, I would like a 5.1.2 system. I have watched a few videos and know I need AV Reciever with 7 channels (2 to assign to Atmos) and for it to support Atmos. A centre speaker 4 Bookshelf/tower speakers (ideally bookshelf) A sub 2 in-celling or Atmos-enabled speakers (ideally Atmos-enabled) And the usual compliment of a rat's nest of cables. My Audio knowledge is limited to a speaker at its loudest and probably isn't as clear as at less than 70%. Watts are how loud and impedance exists. I have tried a Sonos ARC and while it may have been improper calibration, there wasn't much of an upgrade over my £100 Sony 2 channel. I was not impressed and would like a proper surround system. I want the speakers to be of a higher quality (not audiophile good) so that if and when I move and have a dedicated theatre room or just a living room more accommodating to a 7 or 9-channel surround system, I would not need to upgrade my speakers and just the Reciever and add more speakers. If there are any fantastic deals for receivers or speakers please let me know (live in the UK) but just a general guide of what specs on the equipment I should look for. My room is 5.5m by 3.5m with the long side having my TV. My Jellyfin client is a Fire TV 4k. I would plug this directly into my receiver as my TV lacks Atmos. It has ARC and does support 5.1 but I would like 5.1.2

Hi guys I'm new here in the forum. But not new to Linus tech tips, you guys have been my number 1 go to for reviews for a while now - Thanks for all you input. So lately I've been wandering if I should upgrade my sound setup for my PC. I've heard of 7.1.4 speakers systems for Home Theater setups (Atoms, I think it called, or at least Dolby variant of it). I've seen a few videos explaining Atmos, and the "objective sound". That the sound imitates objects flying around the rooms ATMOSphere around you. Rather then a predefined sound stream for each speaker. Then I though this would be a perfect match for the gaming world, where objects paths aren't predefined relative to the listener beforehand, as the player is moving around in the virtual environment. Contrary to movies where the producers actually know where the objects are, and going, relative the listener. Hope you can follow my idea So I started to look for some reviews on 7.1.4 sound cards for PCs, but I haven't found a single one yet. Am I searching the wrong places, or has this technology not hit the PC consumer market yet ? Or is there some obvious point I just missed, that makes Gaming and Objective sound incompatible ? Thanks

I have the Dolby Access app, Windows 11, and have setup Dolby Atmos for Hometheater in the app along with checking the "Upmixer" option. For whatever reason, the Dolby Atmos height channels don't activate at all. I thought this was because Windows didn't support more than 8-channel audio, but if I play a video file with Dolby Atmos audio, it does use the height channels. I can tell if my heights are being used because my receiver shows me they're active. It doesn't show this in other apps though. When does Dolby Upmixer take effect in Windows? Does it only happen in supported apps?

I have 9 year old Sony 3D Bluray player. When I try to play downloaded ATMOS contents, it displays "Audio Format not Supported" and hangs. It can play ATMOS audio directly from a Bluray disc and from the files copied untouched from the disc, without any " not supported" message. Even when it displays "not supported" message for DD+ ATMOS, it manages to send the ATMOS signal to my Soundbar. Is there any workaround for my Bluray player to play ATMOS from downloaded or converted files without getting struck?

dolby atmos Which games support Dolby Atmos for Home Theater?
Sawtaytoes posted a topic in PC Gaming
Does anyone know of any game in Windows that supports Dolby Atmos for Home Theater or height channels? If you look at the Dolby website, there are tons of games showing that support Dolby Atmos audio, but when I try those same games in Windows, I only get 8-channel PCM. It appears Dolby Atmos support is only available for Xbox, but I'm not sure. It's possibly Dolby Atmos or height channels can only be activated from UWP games on the Microsoft Store. I don't own any games on the Microsoft Store, so I have no way to verify. tl;dr Windows does not natively support height channels. If you output a Dolby Atmos signal directly, you will get dedicated height-channels, but that completely bypasses Windows (video player apps use this). Dolby Atmos has native support in Windows, but I've never seen it output height-channels. Read for more info. Dolby Atmos is 2 technologies There are two completely separate technologies called "Dolby Atmos": Dolby Atmos for Headphones (spatial audio for 2 channels) Dolby Atmos for Home Theater (spatial audio for many speakers) These are two completely different technologies that have nothing to do with each other. It's extremely confusing to know which is which when everyone just says "Dolby Atmos". The Dolby Atmos app for Windows enables "Dolby Atmos for Home Theater" for free, and you can unlock "Dolby Atmos for Headphones" by paying a fee. What is Dolby Atmos for Headphones? "Dolby Atmos for Headphones" is a similar technology to "Windows Sonic" and sounds awful on a dedicated home theater setup (I've tried). It's designed for binaural audio, something that's only possible with headphones because sounds in the right ear can't be heard from the left. With a home theater, both ears can hear all sounds from every channel. Windows Spatial Audio API Unless a game natively supports the Windows Spatial Audio API, such as Final Fantasy XV, it's probably not going to support Dolby Atmos for Home Theater. Just like with HDR, where you sometimes have to enable HDR in Windows before the game will notice you have an HDR-capable display, you have to also enable Spatial Audio before loading a game that supports it. I did try the demo for Final Fantasy XV, but Atmos heights were not active even after enabling the Spatial Audio setting. My receiver shows me which channels are active and the volume of each, but height channels didn't even show up. Windows is 8-channel PCM only Your height channels aren't available in Windows. The most you can do in Windows is 8-channel PCM audio: Front Center Surround (pointed 90 degrees from you) Surround Back (behind you) LFE (dedicated subwoofer) Pro Tip: It's best to enable every setting and check every box in Windows for whichever configuration you select and let your receiver or DAC do the work of splitting up the signal for your speakers; otherwise, you'll be missing out on audio you should be hearing. Activating height channels The only way I've found to activate height channels in Windows is by sending a Dolby Atmos signal directly to my receiver. To do this, I needed to be using HDMI out from my GPU and using a video player app with a video file that supported Dolby Atmos audio: Windows Movies & TV ➡ It "just works" with no special configuration. Media Player HomeCinema ➡ Required special configuration; otherwise, Windows would downmix to 8-channel PCM. VLC ➡ Required special configuration; otherwise, Windows would downmix to 8-channel PCM. The Dolby Atmos app doesn't need to be installed in this case. Can't remember if you need it for the Windows Movies & TV app though. Even if I configured 7.1 audio in Windows, if I played a video file that had Dolby Atmos audio, then it would switch to Dolby Atmos on my receiver. That also meant the audio volume would only be controlled by my receiver; not Windows. Pretty annoying.- 3 replies

Been looking around for a way to extract lossless audio from the Nvidia shield before the video goes to the TV. Would a HDFury 4K Vertex² be able to do this? So basically Shield HDMI --> HDFury 4K Vertex² splits audio/video--->Sonos Arc & TV Thanks, Really trying to avoid having to upgrade the TV to get lossless atmos.

So, I've got my new-ish Atmos receiver (5.1.2) plugged into my 1080ti on my PC via HDMI, and I just use it to run audio. I use the display port for my display. I used to generally use the aforementioned app to run sound to the receiver (right click on the sound icon in the taskbar and select Speaker Setup) but then today I just selected 7.1 instead of "Dolby Atmos for home theater"; and I set the sound in the device sound properties to 24bit, 192Khz and I still get Atmos when I run an Atmos movie. The Atmos light still comes on on the receiver when I play an Atmos track. I find that without using the Dolby app I no longer get the annoying 2 second silence when I open, or even unpause, a movie. And the sound seems to be just as good. The sound used to also disappear sometimes using the "app" if I paused a movie for too long, and I'd randomly have to change some setting, and change it back for it to pick up the sound again. So is the app just (worse than) useless? Does it serve a different purpose, like for some different setup or something? (Besides them trying to get money from me for Atmos in headphones!) I do have 2 ceiling speakers, so am I now running 7.1 instead of 5.1.2? Or is the receiver just taking the signal and doing the proper "Atmos stuff" with it? Or am I correct in assuming that the receiver is doing the proper Atmos stuff through HDMI? It's pretty hard to find much information on receivers and PCs.. everybody who uses a PC seems to just use headphones or little desktop speakers!

Anybody know if there are any reviews or comparisons out there for the options in that new Windows Creator's update feature, that one in the sound settings called "Spatial sound"? Like a comparison or review for the three options: None(as in no spatial surround, the setting is turned off) Windows Sonic Dolby Headphones I tried out all three to see if I can hear any difference. I kinda heard some fuzziness or warbling or something with the music I was playing with the Windows sonic but I don't know it sounded alright with one of those surround test videos on YouTube. I tried them out wearing my Harmon-Kardon IENC's. Also it might be nice to mention I have Nahimic 2 running in the backgound.

I have a simple question, does anyone know of a dedicated soundcard that can decode Dolby Atmos? Not software decoders you can find in codecs, but an actual chip on the soundcard. Like receivers have. Does anyone know of a soundcard that can do that?

I have recently purchased a new setup with Yahama YHT-196(I'm on budget). I've been hearing of atmos and it's liveliness lately. I use the receiver for PC only. I have this idea where the atmos content is decoded in PC and 5.1 channel output is sent via the HDMI to the receiver and the extra channels are sent via sound card of the PC so that I connect the top firing speakers to the sound card? Do we have any software for this purpose? I am 100% sure many will point out the delay due to receiver will not be in sync with the sound card and I may not have the full atmos experience. I am kinda ok with the caveats as the process I'm going on is budget and moreover I just want to have a feel of Atmos.

Howdy, I recently bought a custom 5.1.2 setup, bought about 30 blu-rays that I enjoyed and noticed something, some movies don't come with Atmos nor DTS:X, I know the list of movies that have them, I checked Dolby's website, for example: Gravity is supposed to have Atmos but for me it only has DTS:HD Master Audio. Atmos movies were made available to home theatres after what, 2015? I only have 3 movies that have Atmos, Mad Max: Fury Road, Warcraft and Suicide Squad. No movies with DTS:X for now. So my question is, is this a region thing? Some movie regions have it and others don't? I am in Europe, region B/2, I buy movies in my country and on Amazon UK. Thanks in advance and happy new year!

Hi, I've got a Huawei Mate 20 X which has Dolby Atmos. I've downloaded the official Dolby Atmos trailers from the Dolby site. I've tried the stock headphones and tried other quality headphones to listen to it on my Mate 20 X, with Dolby Atmos turned on. It didn't sound surroundy at all. How do you get Dolby Atmos content to actually play like it should? Or is that impossible on a phone and is that Dolby Atmos label on a phone more of a "there's been some tweaking with the sound but it's definitely not real Dolby Atmos"? PS: I've tried it on my wife's Galaxy Note 8 as well. That device also has Dolby Atmos. Same issue. Thanks!

I have a Lenovo Y70-70 Touch with Windows 10 Pro 1809, Dolby ATMOS for Headphones works great with my headphones. Unfortunately, my Klipsch KMC 1 is recognized as headphones instead of as a speaker, so the only ATMOS option available is the headphones option. If this were the only problem caused by its misrecognition I'd probably let it go, but it also is affecting Skype calls and other apps that call for a microphone. Any ideas on how to make windows see the speaker as a speaker? PC Documentation Product Manual for Speaker Spec Sheet for Speaker

Hi, I will move out soon and I was wondering what do I need to make a good home theater room. and I have a few question : - What type of room do I need to look for? - What are your recommendation for low, medium and high setup (AV receiver, speaker, etc)? - Should I go for a projector or a tv? - I will game and watch movie in that setup. - whats is your opinion on 7.1.4 vs 5.1.4? Thx !

Hello, I am looking to purchase a new Home Theater system with a few requirements and I am having some issues with deciding and finding the most "bang-for-the-buck" setup. My requirements are: Dolby Atmos >= 5.1.2 HDR 4K Passthrough CEC One additional preference is no drilling in ceiling/wall for the Atmos speakers. I will hook up my nVidia SHIELD to the AVR and the AVR will output to my (non-4K) LG TV. Main media consumption will be through YouTube and PLEX, and for the future I am considering a PS4/XBONE. I am comfortable with spending 600EUR +/- 100EUR for AVR + Speakers and I have found the following: AVR: Onkyo TX NR676E - 379 EUR Denon AVR X1500H - 399 EUR Speakers: Onkyo SKS HT588 - 319 EUR (Possible issue with the wattage?) Package: Onkyo HT-S5800 - 558 EUR (HT-R494 unfortunately does not support HDR, and therefore I am not convinced that this is a good deal) Now I would like to hear from you if these are the setups which would be "best" for my requirements and maybe even preferences.

I have Dolby Atmos for Headphone enabled on my PC. I enjoyed Netflix's Atmos titles so much because of the audio immersion. But when I ripped a Bluray and Windows 10 Movies App can't play DTS Audio format, which Atmos encoded format is located. I've tried VLC, MPC, WMP (with K-Lite Codec), but none of them can decode Atmos audio. It can be played but I hear no difference when I turnedd my Atmos for Headphone on or off. I've also tried Atmos Encoded Music which uses MP4 format with E-AC3 audio and played it with Movies App and Atmos activated. I heard from people on a forum that Netflix audio uses E-AC3 format for their Atmos titles. So I guess I should play my Bluray rip with Movies App to enjoy Atmos content. Anyone here know how to solve this? I mean DTS Audio Playback with Windows 10 Movies App? Thank you *sorry for my bad english

LG SK10Y not detecting ATMOS from 4K Blu-Ray
CubisticWings4 posted a topic in Home Theater Equipment
Good Afternoon and Happy Friday, all! I just got my LG SK10Y from Massdrop! I have a Philips 4K Blu-ray player hooked up in pass-through to my SK10Y going to my Vizio P50-C1 4K TV. However, the soundbar will not play ATMOS when playing from the 4K Blu-Ray, but it will play through HDMI (ARC) from the TV from Vudu and other sources. Appreciate any help! Thanks! -
Hello dear LTT community, I come to ask some questions and I hope you will not find them silly. I plan to create a cool sound space for my PC gaming experience, I wanted to implement Dolby Atmos for this. As I searched about it, I heard I need to pass an HDMI cable to an Hi-Fi system if I wanted that, also, I need a Windows 10 computer right?. Here are my questions: - What is the list of supported video games for Dolby Atmos? I found one for Xbox One X but it seems outdated. - Is there a list of games for Xbox One X for Atmos? - Are there VR games which support Dolby Atmos for Headsets? Is this only for a kind of headset (Occulus, HTC, WMR)? - I heard of DTS:X, can this be used for gaming too? - What are the best demos (Games / Movies) to show to people as a "first taste of atmos"? - I have heard of Laptops with Atmos (like the Xiaomi Notebook Pro) are they worth it and is there other laptops like the one I talked about? Thank you for all your future answers Don't hesitate to ask questions back if you find any of them to not be "defined enough". Please excuse my mistakes if there are some, as I am not speaking english from birth.

So I was thinking about an audio setup for my room that I will use with my TV and PC. The way I would want it set up is that there would be speakers around the room (the room is pretty much a square shape) so that the audio is always coming from in front of me. I have my PC and TV on perpendicular walls, so with a normal audio setup, the sound will be correct for only one or the other. What I want is for the audio center change with different inputs, while using a single audio system. Is this possible at all? I have not come across such a thing, so I am thinking maybe not, but maybe someone here knows better. Thanks

I have a Samsung HW-K950 Soundbar hook up to my PC. Unfortunately you cant with Samsung Soundbar get 4K HDR from PC. Then i must do HDMI to TV + DVI-HDMI cable to Samsung soundbar and "extend desktop" in Windows to get audio. You can not send only audio with Nvidia cards. This works well until you watch Netflix 4K HDR ATMOS with the app. Netflix 4K does not work with expanded desktop in Windows. I get 1080p and not 4K (HDR or not HDR is the same). Is there any Soundcard with HDMI out to get only sound from HDMI on the market?

I just noticed that it’s available in windows 10 and got the 30 day trial, but the Dolby Access app just crashes and Netflix doesn’t work if it’s enabled. Do any of you has been able to use it?

Since I mostly play Overwatch, my focus is there. But I'm wondering if anyone with real knowledge can enlighten me about adding Windows Sonic into the mix. I use a pair of HyperX Clouds (analog 3.5mm jack) plugged straight into on-board audio (ASrock z97, Realtek 6.0.1.7560 driver) and everything in Windows & all my games is set to stereo, or Headphone mode if available. So far this seems to provide the best audio quality vs spatial, with as little confusion about which API is trying to power the sound, if that makes sense. Overwatch, specifically I have enabled Atmos for headphones and I have noticed a difference there. So mostly I'm wondering if adding Windows Sonic will do anything for a plain set of stereo headphones? Will it do anything for me if I enable Sonic but leave off the "turn on 7.1 virtual surround" disabled? And will either of those two option conflict with Overwatch's Atmos API? I don't watch any movies or Netflix, so all I care about is audio quality in-game & maybe Windows itself. My list of games includes most Blizzard titles, Wargaming.net's trio, Rocket League, and a bit of The Division. (this topic inspired by Linus' & JayZTwoCent's recent Atmos soundbar videos)

Greetings, Last year I bought a 55" Samsung H6400, a Sony BDP-S5500 blu-ray player and a PS4. The plan now is to buy a decent Atmos AV receiver with speakers included, my max budget is 900 euros with everything in total. All the devices will be connected to the AV, including the cable TV box which also uses HDMI. I was inclined to buy this: http://www.nl.onkyo.com/en/products/ht-s5805-125343.html it costs around 800 euros and it has Atmos. Two of these speakers project sound to the ceiling, although for best experience, there are ceiling speakers, but that ain't really an option. A few conditions, notes and questions: I plan to connect everything to the AV and using an optical cable from the TV to the AV. Is Atmos really worth it? If it's not worth it, maybe a 7.1 system? There is plenty of room for everything. Max price is 900 euros. I'm open to other options if you think they're worth it. Thanks in advance.
