Dear all, i had the thought of using the BTC Mainboards which have a looot of PCI 1x Slots and use these with the PCIe 1x to M.2 Adapter Cards. The Mainboards are fairly cheap and the PCIe adapers have no addidtional chips on them which means that there is no additional powerdraw. overall it should be a lot cheaper then the Flashstor and more customizable. Example: ASRock H110 Pro BTC Mainboard ~50 Bucks + PCIe Adapter ~5 Bucks + Some Usefull CPU (Performance is the Weakness of the Asustor) + Some Ram Overall it should have some decent Powerdraw. What do you think about this approch? Regards Benjamin

Hello Please can anyone help me i just got a asustor flashstor 6 i am trying to connect the S/PDIF out of the nas to my DAC Hi-Res Player | ASUSTOR NAS (is not detecting my DAC) as in . no input signal is getting to my dac things i have tried - firmly connect the cable (many times ) - tried with 2 different S/PDIF cable (i.e not cable issue) - checked with a second asustor flashstor 6 (no optical out from nas) - connected HDMI out from NAS -> split the signal to display and S/PDIF audio -> this worked -> but not Optical out from NAS to DAC (issue with this the signal splitter down samples the audio) (i.e its not a DAC issue) please can anyone check if they have the same issue out it works out of the box possible suspect (fitment of S/PDIF cable on the NAS side ) my use case of ssd nas (has optical out ) -> tidal replacement thank you

My NAS quit on me recently so I'm going to get a new one and I've settled on getting the Asustor AS6704T which has 4 HDD slots, as well as 4 PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD slots which can be used for either storage or caching. I've recently been reading how using an SSD for caching can significantly speed up file transfers. I figured this out because with windows 10 you get the speed graph when you transfer files, and they start off really fast for me at like over 100Mbps, but then at about a quarter to half way through the slow down to anywhere from 30-80Mbps because the HDD's cash has maxed out. If you use an SSD for a supplimentory cash for the drive and it's bigger than the file(s) your transferring then it will stay at that 100Mbps or so speed, if not faster. However I am wondering if using the M.2 drives in this fashion won't make them wear out even faster than if they were just being used for everyday normal operations such as running an OS or for general storage. I read someone on this forum on someone else post where people said that the TBW rating of an M.2 SSD is really something to go by as many can go far beyond that, and that even if I did surpass it and the drive failed as long as it was still within warranty it could be replaced. However I'd really like to get something that is gonna last me for hopefully beyond the 5 year warranty. Also I would prefer not to spend too much money on them, because I'm already going to be spending a lot on the NAS itself as is, along with 4 new HDD's & these 4 M.2 drives So what do you think would be the best PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD for what I wanna do? Hoping I can get some guidance on a NAS issue I have on my M1 Ultra Sudio Mac. I have 2 x brand new Ironwolf Pro 8TB drives in file system EXT4 in RAID0. These drives give me 380mb/s write in RAID0 on my Yottamaster USB-C external enclosure. On my 2.5GB Asustor AS1102T the same drives get 180mb/s write in RAID0 - far off their potential speed on the external drive. I have replaced every component in the chain including the NAS itself and even connected directly to the 10GB port on my mac - with no improvement. I also upgraded from Barracuda drives to the Ironwolf Pro in the hope it would improve. Do anyone have any idea what the bottleneck is or is 180mb/s considered ok for a 2.5GB NAS? Asustor support seems to think this is acceptable for the NAS and have provided no further explanation. Also, if I switch to another port, the speed will always plummet, even if i switch it back again, anyone know the cause of this? Thanks

Hi! I'm about to purchase a new home NAS for the next 5 year period. I will mainly store photos, music, documents and films on the device. Usage through Windows 10 and Plex on Samsung TV. Current NAS since 2015: Asustor 304T & Seagate NAS 3TB x4 in RAID6 (with 6TB of usable storage). I am very happy with Asustor so far and I'm looking for a new Asustor model, unless a superior model is available from QNAP or Synology. I was looking at Western Digital Gold drives, but their branding was recently discontinued, but the drives themselves were brought back as Ultrastar HC500 series branding. I was also looking at Red Pro -models, but inside the EU market the price for Red Pros are actually higher than the ex-Gold series, which are a step above in quality and reliability. Price per terabyte: 10TB = 35,9 €/TB, 12TB = 35,3 €/TB. New rig: - NAS: Asustor AS4004T - Hard disks: Western Digital Ultrastar HC500 series 10TB or 12TB - Array: BTRFS in RAID10. BTRFS does not officially support RAID 6 yet and I dont want ext4 for such a large storage system. Any comments or suggestions? Hopefully I'm getting this out correctly.. So - like most, I too have lost some pictures / files during my years tinkering with PC's (since early 90's). And for a loooooong time I've been thinking of getting an NAS system linked to my house (2TB+2TB | Raid1). The thing is... Linus's NAS videos are either outdated (a bit), there's no comparison or just way too OP for my use. And I'm super glueless on which device to choose, what I should be looking at and who delivers the best bang for £$€¥. Being a long time unemployed person and possibly starting school (again -.-) in the fall I do need to look for the value and can't go for the top shelf stuff. But then again I don't want to sacrifice too much on the quality - still with me? The use it will go for / should be for is (max 2 accessing at the same time) : 1 Home PC (My personal frankenstein) 1 TV PC (Acer Revo RL80) 1-2 Laptops 1-2 Samsung Tab's 1 Samsung Phone via Asus RT-N56U & Cisco EPC3825 @ 100/10MB connection Everything is and will be streamed via the home PC as it's on 24/7 - so no real need for HDMI output or streaming as the Win8.1 shait on TV PC does the job. Just want to safely store all my pictures and other, not so relevant stuff and not to be afraid of power spikes / HDD crash destroying our memories. Also a plus would be that there's an working Android App that could get access to pictures possibly, so I could clear my dropbox and possibly autosync new pictures to the NAS straight away. So far my search for the device has given the following manufacturers to choose from : Synology - QNAP - Asustor and to go with the system WD Red 2 TB SATAIII 64MB - 3.5". Just fallen short on which way to go because no one is telling...: - What is the noise level these have - Will they have overheating issues - What's the difference between 512 vs 1024 mem in this use and will it make a real difference - How much should I look into processors when choosing the device - How safe are these? I mean on the encryption part.. And how "visible" they will be to the outside world? - What are the important stuff I should focus on when choosing a NAS for home use? Something from these...? DS215j - DS214se - DS214play - DS214 TS-251 - TS-251C - TS-231+ - TS-231 - TS-212P AS-202T - AS-202TE - AS-302T But again, do I need fast USB copy feature, should I go for the 1GB or stick with 521MB.. Or opt for upgradeable on the Ram end? Does the .2GHz, .4GHz difference really effect me when it comes to packing the stuff up and possibly checking / copying something from there few times a month? So HDD's will be the WD Red 2TB's (unless someone has way better bang for buck on that end to suggest). And the manufacturer will be Synology, QNAP or Asustor.. Asustor is on the cheaper end and the look ok. QNAP.. well I don't really like the white stuff, but "big boys" say that these are better. And that Synology is battling on the top position with it when it comes to home NAS's. Any input / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully there's someone out there that could help in this (and someone that could benefit from this post after me).
