Hi Guys, I'm after some advice on 2U rack cases that can hold up to 12 3.5" drives (must be SATA backplanes and hot swappable to a certain extent - I know SATA is not but would like the ability to pull drives when needed without opening the chassis) So here is the down low, I have an older NAS which is also a VMWare ESXi server running many VMs. Whilst the VM part is no longer important with moving to a much bigger rack setup, I wanted to reuse that for extra storage for CCTV. Old setup; Silverstone Mini-ITX DS380 case 5x 2.5" (with 2.5 to 3.5 convertors) (4Tb each) Crucial MX500 (Data) 1 x 2.5" 500Gb Crucial MX500 (VMWare ESXi 8 OS only) Asrock Rack C2550D4I Motherboard / Intel Atom CPU combo - https://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=C2550D4I#Specifications 64Gb Crucial DDR3 RAM New setup; 2 Dell Poweredge R730XD servers (2x Xeon E5-2670v3 CPUs - 12 cores each, 512Gb DDR4 RAM each) - each with ESXi running on Raid 1 iirc (Mirroring) using 2 separate 256Gb 2.5" drives 1 Dell Equalogic SAN 96Tb raw of SAS drives in RAID 5 So as you can tell no rush to transfer the old setup across But it would be nice to reuse that machine as it still works perfectly fine and would be a good fit for CCTV NVR style storage but I would prefer to transfer it in to the rack instead of the Mini-ITX case I am also in the process of rebuilding my home lab, any suggestions on if to continue with ESXi as I have done for many years, or would XCP-NG/Proxmox/Xencenter be a better option? Any suggestions? Love the channel, been catching up on bent CPU pins just tonight, unfortunately damaged an LGA2011-v3 socket earlier on that needs repairing, so will be attempting that tomorrow. Hi there, I recently set up a new ASRock Rack X470D4U and I'm experiencing some issues with BMC management interface. They are not dire issues but it would be nice to get them fixed. Here are some examples of the issues I'm facing: - Can't upload my own SSL certificates, I get an error. - Can't install OS remotely or use remote media (correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you just click start media in the top right of the KVM window). - The system inventory is empty. - For some reason, after port forwarding on my network, and in the BMC, I cannot access the BMC management panel from an external network. If anyone has any experience with any of these issues and has a solution please let me know. I'm running BMC version 3.02.00 and BIOS version 4.20. If you need any additional details let me know. Hey there, I build myself a little NAS Server with the X570D4U Mainboard from ASRockRack After I hooked all ( CPU cooler, ATX Power, CPU Power, etc. ) correctly up to the board and pressed the power key it turned up the fans and did a restart. I connected the VGA to the dedicated VGA Port from the Mobo which is powered by the BCM IPMI Chip but there is no output. For testing I also put in a Zotac Geforce GT10 for video output but still no video. After that I connected the dedicated IPMI Port to the Network. Finnaly in the IPMI there were no CPU or GPU or even no RAM detected in the Peripherals tab. I also tried the KVM interface of the IPMI but there was a black screen and a text saying "No Signal". Even after several reboots and testings I couldnt get a video signal out of the Board. Did anybody encountered this problem before or maybe has the same board at home and can give me some tips to fix my mainboard ? ( The ATX cable from the power supply was to short, so I extended it with a ATX extension cable from SilverStone ) btw. after all theese tests I did I think the board could be broken. Thank You !

Budget (including currency): Nothing set but not expensive Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Plex and Reslio Sync Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): OK so update on my server build... My plan is to replace the ReadyNAS 428 I have with eight 10TB drives. Its under 10% free space now and the lack of anything faster than 1GigE makes transferring to/from painfully slow. Hardware I chose... Motherboard Asrock Rack: ROMED6U-2L2T 48GB ECC RAM (six 8GB sticks) Some M.2 NVME SSD's Four 8TB drives to start Fractal Node 804 case Four NVMe SSD's (2TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB) The motherboard is a great option. It has four PCIe Gen 4 slots, three mini-sas connectors, a couple NVME m.2 slots and a few slim-sas connectors that can support two NVME drives each. So there's LOTS of upgrade paths for the future. Ultimately I want to use the Highpoint PCIe to M.2 cards (up to eight slots per card) and have all SSD storage down the line. The idea is to start with hard drives to build out initially and get all my data off the ReadyNAS. I've been testing various configs/setups with ESXi, Win2k19, Ubuntu, Fedora, Openmedia Vault and Truenas Scale. Initially I had it running bare metal just so I could do testing and get used to TrueNAS. The idea was to have Truenas or whatever I chose as my storage OS as a VM and do PCIe passthrough in the hyper visor for the SAS controllers and the Nvidia P1000 card to another VM for plex. Well..... the more I tested, the more things I found really frustrating with Truenas. I could not get the Plex container to reliably/consistntly see the zvol/dataset for content. Nor could I get it to see the Nvidia card. For as much hype there has been for Truenas in the past year or so on youtube, from friends, etc. What none of them tell you is how horrible the UI/UX is in Truenas. When you're trying to add app/containers, NOTHING IS CONSISTENT when configuring things. Now I'm no linux expert, I haven't worked in it daily for almost ten years. But I know enough to be an intermediate level admin. I think I setup a Plex instance at least a couple dozen times and probably 3 of those instances worked well enough that I could work with it for consistent testing. How wrong I was! Something would just stop working. I'd kill the instance, rebuild it the same as before. It wouldn't see the dataset for Videos despite having storage setup the same as the previous instance. After a couple weeks I gave up on Truenas. I went with Win2k19 as the base OS and a Win10 Hyper-V instance and that was doing what I needed. My main need is Resilio Sync for project collaboration as well as off-site backups. Resilio in their great wisdom, won't let you run the free version on Windows server. The linux version doesn't have a UI. So it needs to be Win10. I decided to go back to my old setup with an 8th gen i7 and do some more testing on the Epyc system. This is where I dug more into the issue with trying to pass through the SAS controller to a VM. I tried Proxmox and ESXi. Could not get anything to work as desired. I had done some research previously but didn't really get anywhere. This time though, I found something on my first search. There's no real fix, there's some potential patch but stability and security may be an issue. So now I'm kind of pissed. I really wanted to get this build up and running by now. I got laid off, found another job which turned out to be a complete disaster. Hiring manager was clueless and basically gave me access to nothing so I couldn't do my job. So now waiting on next job so I can decide what I want to do. I see my options as 1. Continue with my original plan with the addition of an HBA and forego the built in SAS controllers. This would mean I need to get a new rackmount case with higher airflow to keep the HBA cool 2. Scrap the original plan. Keep the system in the case or downsize to a smaller one and use as my desktop/workstation and get a QNAP or Synology NAS with 10GigE

Hi i have a HP microserver that is converted to ITX and i have bought a new server motherboard which is Asrock Rack C246 WSI but now I’m thinking I could perhaps use the old HP server PSU where I just toke the 12 volt from atx. is that possible?

At this years Intel Developer Forum 2016, with everyone talking about Xeon Phi (Knights Landing), Asrock was the first to announced their 2U server system based on this new processor. Asrock Rack's 2U4N-F/X200, is a 2U server system, containing 4 nodes, with each node having its own Xeon Phi processor, 6 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting both R/LRDIMMs, 2 PCie 3.0 x2 slots, dual Intel i350 lan ports, a M.2 and 4x 2.5" drive bays for SATA, SAS, or NVMe, SSDs and HDDs on a half width motherboard. All of this, is powered by a 1600w 80Plus Platinum rated redundant power supply. Next up is SuperMicro's 5028TK-HTR, also a 2U server system containing 4 nodes, similar to the Asrock Rack one. 12x 3.5" drive bays for SAS or SATA SSDs/HDDs, note that each node only gets 3 drives, and 2 half height PCIe 3.0 x16 slots. SuperMicro bundles their 2U Xeon Phi server, with a 2000w redundant power supply, that's 400w more than the Asrock. The second unit announced by SuperMicro is their SuperWorkstation 5038K-i. It's uses their KISPE motherboard, that runs on the Intel LGA 3467 for the Xeon Phi X200 processors, 6 DDR4 DIMM slots, up to 2400MHz, and 192GB max for ECC RDIMM or 384GB max for ECC LDIMM. 2x PCIe 3.0 x16, 1x PCIe 3.0 x4, 10x SATA 6G, a single 24, and dual 8 to run it. On the I/O side, it has dual Intel i350 gigabit lan, a IMPI 2.0 port supporting KVM over Lan, 5x USB 3 with 1 on through a header, 1x USB 2 via header, and a VGA output running off a 3rd party graphic controller. The unit comes in a standard desktop tower case, with 2x 5.25" external drive bays, 6x 3.5" and 4x 2.5" internal drive bays. For power SuperMicro is using a 750w powered by Seasonic. The processor, is cooled by a custom dual rad 120mm all in one liquid cooler. While the motherboard is a standard ATX, it will not be sold as a separate unit. To get it, users must by the entire prebuilt system from SuperMicro. All units, runs on Intel socket 3467, 64-72 cores quad threaded, running at 1.3GHz to 1.5GHz, 36MB of L2 cache, 16GB of High Performance Memory (MCDRAM), and 36 PCIe 3.0 lanes. These Xeon Phi X200 are host processors, and this means they can run a OS, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2016. Does this motherboard from asrock E3C226D2I support 32GB's of ECC memory if I use 16GB Dimms? It says it has a max of 16GB's, but i'm just wondering if I could support more if you get larger sticks of ram.
