Budget (including currency): 1,00,000 INR Country: India Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mainly for architectural softwares like Autocad, Sketchup, V-ray, Lumion Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Keybaord mice etc not included in the build. For the monitor i was thinking of 2k 32 inches refresh rate does not matter as its not for gaming. would like this included in the budget but can stretch the budget a bit if required what i have read is that autocad and sketchup are more focused on single core performance i could be wrong but i was thinking of a cpu with higher base clock than getting one with higher cores GPU is also fairly important as rendering projects in vray or lumion can take quite some time on lower end cpu/gpu's appreciate any suggestions

architect Architecture Studio good enough workstations
Vlad28 posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Budget (including currency): 2500-3000 $US Country: Romania Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: main focus: Revit (favors single-core performance) and TwinMotion (GPU heavy) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): The plan is to buy in the next month or so, 2 PC for our family architecture studio, both focused on Revit workloads and just one on TwinMotion. I am upgrading from: I7-4771 @3.50Ghz, 16GB DDR3 @1600Mhz, GTX 1060 6GB (I plan to keep the GPU and use it in the Revit only workload station) on a Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3 motherboard + 10+ years PSU: Corsair TX850W (model: CMPSU-850TX) I plan to keep my two 2K monitors and peripherals. I also will buy another 2K monitor by the end of the year. This are the parts I have chosen and the local price (+/- 5$US depending on the vendor): CPU: i5-11600KF - price 225$US (the i7 is 50% more expensive but doesn't bring more in single-core performance) CPU cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 - price 95$US RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB (2x16GB) 3200Mhz - price 150$US (don't know if I will buy first a 16GB kit and then add another one to save some money for now) MB: Gigabyte Z590 UD AC - price 175$US (it seems that de Z590 UD variant is not available in my country... don't really need the wi-fi on it) CASE: Corsair 4000D - price 110$US ( I really like this case because of the air filters and that the HDD bay can be cooled by the front fans) + 3 case fans (what do you recommend?) PSU: Corsair TX-M Series TX850M - price 140$US Total for one system: 895$US x 2 = roughly 2000$US adding the price for the extra fans and y splitters or a fan hub (what do you recommend for adding more and not having enough fan-headers on the motherboard?) Also I don't know if its worth the extra money for a 12th gen i5 and switching to a new platform and CPU architecture plus windows 11 and if I would benefit or have problems with the efficiency-cores. GPU for one system: the cheapest RTX 3060 ti at this moment are around 670$US : Gainward GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ghost LHR / Palit GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Dual LHR 8GB / GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3060 Ti EAGLE OC LHR other RTX 3060 ti 800-900$US and even more, nearly as the cheapest RTX 3070. As the title says we are looking for good enough air cooled systems that will handle our projects for the next 5+ years and from experience the system that I am running now had some little lag with one big point cloud project and TwinMotion works okey - could be better. Last, the system will stay under the desk... so aesthetics and RGB doesn't matter. I am planning to do a single-core overclock (this is the first time I am trying an overclockable CPU). Are the parts good for a 5.0Ghz single-core overclock? My main concern is durability and reliability of the systems. Any suggestions and opinions are welcome and appreciated. Thank you in advance! -
Hey forum, I have been having a delima... i am looking for a new work computer. I do architectural drawings using multiple different auto cad programs. On the side i also use photo and video editing software for 4k material (adobe PS and PP). I have a custom built PC right now, a decent computer/gaming rig (7700k, 16gb ram, 1080ti, ect) that does the job perfectly for me right now, but i had to take it from home and put it in my office but now i need to bring my pc home instead of lugging a 50+ pound computer back and forth so i need to replace it with something. I originally was thinking a laptop because i like being able to go to jobsites and draw a little more on the go. the biggest factor to my search is that i already have the large power house computer for what i need so i am looking for a thin laptop that is semi light and not one of the large ones that fit almost a full gpu in them. The options that i am between right now are the surface book with the i7 and 512gb hd and the macbook pro 2017 equivilent, and was temporarily thinking about the surface studio, but then i am not sure about that one just because of the more dated hardware that is in it (winning side to it is the drawing, and what looks like a semi easy to move form factor if i wanted to move the computer a little more often). I am just curios what other people would have to say, or if there are other computers that anyone can suggest that meets the better hardware in the small form factor. thanks - C

My partners just become a fully qualified architect and up until now has been using my desktop to do all her rendering on, however I've just got a job working from home so will need to have access to my computer at all times. So I'm going to build a new system for her. What would you guys recommend as a workstation pc where no games are actually going to be played on it. Needs to be able to render fast and get the job done in the least amount of time possible. Cheers in advance all.

Hi all, I'm an architect in training who recently graduated college and is working at an architecture firm, but I'm starting to realize that my passion for design may be able to be fused with my passion for building computers. I specialize in making my builds beautiful inside and out, a lot like how architects do so with their buildings. My question for you all is this: is there a career out there that would allow me to design and/or build beautiful computers as a full-time gig? I don't really know where to start looking for something like this, so if anyone has any personal experiences that offer insight I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Cheers!

PC Components Case... I bought a Corsair Air740 because I was told going forward heat will become more of an issue and wanted to future proof with a case that could accommodate that. Board.... ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme Socket AM4/X370/DDR4/S-ATA 600/E-ATX Motherboard A friend suggested if I had the space in the case to get a bigger board, not fully sure what that means though. Will it be more future proof in terms of ram capacity and features? Memory... 2 x 8Gb Corsair vengance LPX DDR4 3000 hz Storage... Crucial 1tb ssd (already owned) Graphics... ASUS ROG-STRIX-RX580-T8G-GAM 8 GB Radeon RX 580 TOP Edition GDDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card This is the least sure I am in regards performance. It seems a mine field that mainly addresses gaming but I saw Linus imply workstations rely on CPUs more in vray rendering (bottleneck episode) Chip... Ryzen 2600x with the stock cooler. (Wraith spere I think). I don't anticipate over clocking but it might be a laugh if it is an option. Should I hold off for a 3600x?, What is the resale value of chips Should I want to upgrade? Power... Corsair CP-9020102-UK CX550M 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Po Wer Supply Unit Its 80+, I assume this means no dying in fires. Suggested supplementary info... 1. Budget & Location... My budget is fluid but approx €1000 for the remaining parts (unless there are serious issues raised) I am in Ireland. Will be buying off of Amazon.co.uk prime. 2. Aim... Work (Revit, AutoCAD, photoshop, lumion video and still image rendering, maybe some after-effects if it's able) Strategy Games, videos. Essentially I want a pc that I can ask to render a 5 minute ray trace video of a virtual model and don't mind leaving it for 10 or 20 hours just not 3 days. It's not meant as a primary work computer but it should not wilt if I take some work home. 3. Monitors... Two monitors (Acer R271bmid 27 Inch FHD Monitor, Black (IPS Panel, 4 ms, ZeroFrame, HDMI, DVI). Which I already own. Don't need them over 1080. (The 4k is for the office and client screens.) 4. Peripherals... I will get a grey market outside US Windows key. Keyboard and mouse may get upgraded later but the initial buy-in should go inside the case. 5. Why are you upgrading?... My laptop does not meet requirements. Apologies for the long email but there is very little info out there for architects other than buy the top of the range everything. I appreciate any advice or experience that can be offered.

A friend asked me to buy him a laptop and he is an architect. I'm used to giving advice for gaming laptops and PC's but I don't know that much regarding professional applications and what do they need. He told me he will be using Adobe Illustrator, CORELDRAW, AUTOCAD, SKETCHUP, and REVIT. The laptop must be around 800 to 1k USD. I will be buying it in Mexico. Maybe some Amazon laptops from the US will be available to ship here, but the prize will rise. Preferably a 15´ inch laptop, and no touchscreen is needed.

Hi everyone! I am looking for a laptop for my girlfriend. She is an architect and uses softwares like AutoCAD for 2D drawings; Sketchup, Rhino, 3Dmax for 3D modelling; Vray and Lumion for rendering, and the adobe suite for bit of graphics work. We can’t decide which will be an ideal laptop for her. Mostly confused between MSI GS65 (GTX 1060) and Dell Precision 5530 (Quadro P2000)? Budget is about Rs, 1.7 lakhs (~2300 dollars), we live in India so Razer isn't an option . Requirements in priority order: 1. Performance and Speed (I think i7 - 8750H will be good enough) 2. Display, colors should be well calibrated 3. Portability and clean look, 15.6 inch screen and something thin and light with less bezel Also, which is a better option Quadro P2000 or GTX 1060? I've heard Quadros are very good for architecture work, but on the related software forums I've read GTX performs good enough for the price and the trade-off isn't worth it.

Hello! I'm a high school student but I'm looking into doing dual enrollment and college courses eventually. I don't know what courses would help me get the type of job I'm trying to get. What I want to do is make CPUs, but I want to do the actual computer part. Like the coding part, not the machinery part. What job is that? And what courses could I take to help me get a better understanding of that? Thanks!

Hi everyone, A friend of mine and his wife wanted to buy a computer to use at home. His wife is an architect and uses programs like CAD, Sketchup, Revit, and he wanted to jump into some PC gaming as well. I told them to give me a budget (which is 700$) and I could put together a PC for them rather than buy one off a store shelf. I was thinking a locked i7 or a Xeon would suffice since they're not too keen on overclocking. However I'm having a difficult time deciding what the GPU should be. The husband isn't too concerned with playing the latest games at max settings, he really just wants to play H1Z1 haha. Anything over 200$ would break the budget. I was thinking the GTX 750 ti would work, but my biggest concern is that the wife would need a decent card to run her programs simultaneously with two monitors. If anyone can help me out with any suggestions or a better build, I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks in advance guys! First post BTW ahaha.

Hi! I know you get asked this question a lot, but i need to build a $2000 workstation and i dont even know where to start. The software i will be using is AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup, Rhino, 3dmax (maybe), and vray for rendering. I have searched the forum for "budget workstation" but all i can find are video editing oriented configurations. I would like to start with a Xeon processor, a Quadro K2200 video card, and 32gb of RAM. Expandability is very important for my work, so in the future i would like to add a second video card or a second Xeon (if possible or recommended), more ram, etc. As you can tell im a noob in this department, so i need a foolproof recipe for this build. Thanks a lot in advence.

My friend is an architect and runs his own business with 4 other employees. Everyone has identical desktops except for my friend who has a different GPU. His four employees are equipped with i7 2600 CPUs, 10 GB of DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDDs, and GTX 580s. Everyone in the office spends all of their workday in either AutoCAD or Sketchup designing various things. My friend however is only equipped with a GT 530 and has been experiencing various recent issues including: Scripts taking a long time to take affect/load, whenever he opens either program his mouse pointer will "smear" for lack of a better term (leaving a trail of infinite mouse pointers) and models will load slower plus lagginess when rotating models. In sketchup he must turn all shadows off or his computer will become too laggy to use. As a solution I have come up with two options: A GTX 960 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory (a huge jump from his 1 GB of DDR3 VRAM) or a NVIDIA Quadro Workstation GPU which are recommended by AutoCAD. HOWEVER I have not gotten a definitive answer on if Quadro cards are all that better for 2D models considering the huge price jump. He doesn't want to spend more than $400 on a GPU so something like a Quadro 4000 or k2200 would be an option. I recommended the 960 because of its low power consumption allowing him to keep his current power supply, but will it solve his issues and give him what he needs? Thanks for taking a look at this post and I hope to get a clear answer after searching for so long.

Hey there! I'm trying to help my struggling architect sister migrate from a ancient dell laptop to a somewhat decent desktop. Her PC activities are limited to browsing, watching movies and running software such as autoCAD, revit and sketchup3D. I'm willing to spend no more than $600 for the PC only. Will making an AMD build be a mistake? Does she need a dedicated GPU? Should I experiment with APU? For now she doesn't plan to use more than one 22" 1920*1080 display. What if she has two monitors 12 months down the line? What sort of display power is mandatory keeping that upgradability in mind? I have a feeling the most important decision will be the processor and the mobo which can also make the most difference in terms of savings. I would very much appreciate your comments and build suggestions.

hey everyone, so i have an issue, i've installed full board waterblocks VRM/Southbridge on my Maximus VI Formula, and i have 2 GTX 780ti's in SLI, i'm trying to figure out how i should have my tubing set up to include the two ports between the two cards? should i add them to the loop after the cards? or before? or between? if i can avoid putting the lower block between the cards i'd prefer that, because i'm using a EK Bridge & Link system. here's a picture to help kind of figure it out. the cards aren't on the board, i haven't put the motherboard in the case yet. Here's how the layout looks with the blocks/radiators/inlet/outlets Thank you anybody who can help, i really REALLY appreciate it P.S. I'm using regular tubing, not acrylic, but i do have a pretty good bend radius with the primochill advanced LRT, that and i have a boatload of fittings. if this helps here's the fittings to help plan it, i do have more 90/45/30 and straight fittings, they just aren't in the picture, if that can help also. THANK YOU SO MUCH
