I was thinking about getting Manjaro XFCE for my low end laptop to game, but then saw some posts talking about it being buggy?!. I really do not mind how it looks or how easy it is to setup. I kinda like the long setup process anyway. If all I cared about was performance and stability, do you think I should go with Arch instead of Manjaro? If yes, is XFCE perfectly fine or should I mess around with i3 or KDE?

We all share a home computer at home. (I have a laptop that I use for school stuff but this is about the computer) My family need Windows for their day to day tasks(Ive tried converting them but they wont lol) There is a 256gb ssd on there. I was considering having a triple boot with Windows 10 LTSC, Vanilla Arch with a tiling window manager ( my primary OS ), and Nobara for gaming. There is also a 512gb HDD that I would like to use primarily for storing files, not programs(this is for all 3). How much storage should I allocate for each OS on my SSD? ***My family members do not install any large programs on windows. Just the occasional productivity app or some small games (The software they install might account to around 30GB but nothing more)*** Arch will be my primary OS. I will be playing Minecraft and Terraria. I was hoping for a majority on Arch and equal space on Nobara and Windows.

So I recently wanted to use arch in dual boot, I had tried endeavour os and wanted to go vanilla arch. i used the arch installer and ended up with some issues which was resolved later. But then i messed it up when tried to install dotfiles for hyperland. so I couldn’t find a way to reset that. so what I did was try to re install on the same disk spaces I allotted previously for boot/swap/main os and whenever I try to open the installer I get this And a bunch of other stuff too, but the terminal to write please help me resolve this

I'm having this weird issue on my main laptop where going into and out of fullscreen (any app) causes the system to pause/stutter, for probably the first few hours after rebooting it's totally fine but over time slowly gets worse and worse to the point where it freezes for several seconds everytime anything goes into fullscreen. (NOT just exclusive fullscreen, but anything including youtube videos, browsers, remote desktop, etc.) I'm running arch (6.6.10-arch1-1) with GNOME on X11, latest nvidia drivers (from pacman). Anyone have any idea what is going on? It's quite hard to find anything about this because most results are people complaining about stutters when in fullscreen, that's not the case here. Once It is finished entering fullscreen it's totally fine. (I can't use Wayland mostly because video playback is extremely stuttery on anything chromium based, but it also likes to break after logging out) 10900k/RTX 2080S (Clevo X170SM-G Laptop).

Second PCIE Slot broken or just disabled ?
veerteex posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hello together, i just bought and installed the MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS Motherboard in my PC. With a Ryzen 9 3900x. (btw i use arch ) As i like to use Gpu Passthrough I put the fist GPU (rx580) in the fist slot and my second GPU(rtx2070s) in the second. Both gpu's work fine in the fist slot but in the second neither of them works. So I updated the bios in hope it will work after the update but it didn't . So here's my question. Is the second PCIE slot broken? Or is it just disablet in the bios? I would like to know because then I could still replace it with a new one. Does any one had the same issue ? Thank you very much for your replies. veerteex -
So you are wondering how to install DWM on Arch Linux? Well look no further! In this post I am going to show you how to install DWM and get it working! Preamble STEP 1 Lets create a new user. In this case our user will be called DWM. This is done by by useradd -m dwm. You must remember to add -m to the command otherwise it will not create a directory for your user. useradd -m dwm passwd dwm STEP 2 Now you want to give your new user sudo permissions. This can be done by going into the sudoers file in /etc/sudoers with your favorite text editor. Once you are in the sudoers file you want to scroll down to User privilege specification and add your user. As you can see here we have 3. root, nick and dwm. DWM is the one we are working with now. Once that is done we move onto step 3. STEP 3 Now that the dwm user has been created we can now log into it and download the packages we need. Lets also download Firefox now as well. sudo pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-xrandr xorg-xsetroot firefox STEP 4 Once everything has been downloaded and installed we need to copy the xinitrc file to our home directory with the following command. cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc .xinitrc STEP 5 If everything has gone well so far your home directory should look something like this... STEP 6 Once that has been done and we have confirmed xinitrc is in the correct place. We need to go into the file using a text editor and make a change. So open the file and go down to the very bottom and remove the last 4 lines. Once that is done replace them with exec dwm It should go from this To this Once that is done we move onto step 7 STEP 7 Now we move onto download the software we need. We will be downloading 2 git packages from suckless.org git clone https://git.suckless.org/dwm git clone https://git.suckless.org/st Once they have both been downloaded we need to CD into them and compile the software with sudo make clean install The output from the compiling should look something like this Once that is done we can now move onto the final step. FINAL STEP All that is left now is to type startx And it should give a desktop that looks something like this! You have now installed DWM and Simple terminal on Arch Linux! This should work on any Linux Operating system but of course keep in mind your install manager EG changing sudo pacman -S to sudo apt install. If you want to follow it along in a video format I made a video here as a guide. I hope you find this guide useful. Have a good rest of your day! Nick Matthews LinuxPanic

I have a quad-boot setup (KDE Neon Unstable, Ubuntu MATE developer release (aka "Rolling Rhino"), Windows 10 & Arch) on my laptop. I just installed Arch an hour ago. I'm getting this error when trying to boot it using rEFInd: Invalid loader file! Error: Not found while loading vmlinuz-linux I installed Arch on my laptop's secondary drive and formatted using Btrfs, and the ESP is on the primary. rEFInd was installed few weeks back with KDE Neon, if that helps. In rEFInd, the Arch entry is looking for my ESP even after I already changed the `PARTUUID` to look for my Arch partition. I noticed that in `/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers_x64/`, it only had drivers for ext4, so I copied Btrfs driver from `/usr/share/refind/refind/drivers_x64`. Following [instructions](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/REFInd) on Arch Wiki about setting up rEFInd, here's the menu entry for Arch on my laptop: menuentry "Arch Linux" { icon /EFI/refind/icons/os_arch.png volume "Arch" loader /boot/vmlinuz-linux initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img options "root=PARTUUID=12c1d277-ab6f-764f-aa41-92a11fd1b4c5 rw rootfstype=btrfs add_efi_memmap initrd=boot\intel-ucode.img" submenuentry "Boot using fallback initramfs" { initrd /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img } submenuentry "Boot to terminal" { add_options "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" } } I tried using the `PARTUUID` from my EFI partition and my Arch partition, but no go. I also double checked if subvolumes exist on that partition, but none exist: $ sudo btrfs subvolume list /mnt ID 258 gen 20 top level 5 path var/lib/portables ID 259 gen 21 top level 5 path var/lib/machines Is there something I'm missing?

I installed CoreCtrl, hoping to tweak my system performance a little, and while the options for my graphics card show up as they should, they don't for my CPU: I've read that this is caused by MSI motherboards having the "Cool 'n' Quiet" BIOS option disabled, however my B550M MAG Mortar does not have that feature in the first place. What can I do to fix this? I'm running Manjaro 20.2.

Good afternoon, Problem: This is a weird one. I can log into my computer and use my password just like normal. However, after about a minute, it doesn't accept my password anymore. If I log out and attempt to get back in it doesn't let me in. When I reboot I can log in. But it after about a minute the password doesn't work. I have never seen this before. What I did: I checked the owner of .Xauthority Changing my password with passwd Got this message "passwd: Authentication token manipulationerror" > looked it up and none of that helped. Checking the shadow file (-rw------- root root) A simple update. (sudo pacman -Syu) What I am running: OS:ArcoLinux dualboot with Windows10 (I use it for school once in a bluemoon) WM: awm Laptop: Surfacelaptop 2-3 I have had it for a while

Hello all, recently I’ve been able to completely switch from Windows to Linux full time. The only main hurdle I’ve had is getting my AMD GPU to work with Davinci Resolve (which I need for school and work) which fortunately has been resolved (heh heh… see what i did…) by using EndeavourOS (or any Arch distro) and using an OpenCL package from some absolute Chad in the AUR. It works great and I’m superbly happy with it, however, I still have some caveats regarding Arch Linux. I’m still a huge sucker for Point-Release distros, especially Linux Mint (the 21 beta rocks btw) but I have no idea how in the world I’d be able to install the necessary OpenCL packages on a non Arch system. (Obviously for Mint it’d be an Ubuntu based system) Unfortunately, team Red has yet to release another AMDGPU-PRO package for Ubuntu 22.04 so I can’t just install the supported OpenCL stuff from that; essentially… my question is: is there any way to get OpenCL for Resolve installed on Ubuntu based systems or should I just stick with Arch?

Since posting this almost a year ago I have uninstalled arch and just run windows for most of my school year because it "just works". But now with extra time on my hands over the summer I decided to go full send and do a clean install of just arch linux. I have found that most of my problems listed in my earlier post have been solved through kernel updates(The LTS kernel still doesn't work, but the latest kernel does). I am still faced with one major issue, switchable graphics, I can't get PRIME to work at all as my nvidia gpu won't show up in the nvidia driver settings and using hdmi or usb-c doesn't work due to those being connected directly to the dgpu. I did find this post on reddit from a while ago and they seemed to have the dgpu working but that could also be just that they switched over in the BIOS. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I am mainly a macOS user but I have a desktop with Windows that I occasionally use. Now I wanted to try Linux and decided to install Arch on a thumb drive using the GUI Installer. Everything went well. I managed to boot on the iso thumb drive and then I went ahead and selected another thumb drive for the installation. In the beginning it went very quick but it is stuck on the boot loader for hours now. Is that normal or is something wrong? Thank you very much for you help already :)

Hi there! So yesterday I installed Arch Linux with KDE on an old computer and also in a virtual machine (VirtualBox). Both installations seem to work fine and I can use them regularly. But there was one issue (on both installations): Many websites won't load. I can't even ping them. Websites like Youtube, Google, etc. work fine. But other ones like Reddit, Twitter, Github are just unable to load. Because of that I also can't install specific packages and apps. What should I do to fix the issue? Thanks in advance.

So I'm trying to set up an old HP tablet for discord calls but I'm running into a issue where pulseaudio fails to start and therefore no audio recording or playback works on the system. tablet is an HP X2 something with an Intel Atom x5-Z8350, there's a Blue snowball USB mic connected. OS is Manjaro 21.2.4 (minimal XFCE) with (I think) everything up to date (I ran pacman -Syu). pulseaudio --start just returns: E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed. I attached the log from running pulseaudio -v I'm not very experienced with linux but I did try disabling some suggested options in the /etc/pulse/defalut.pa file (bluetooth and auto-device switching). I'm also tried reinstalling pulseaudio via pacman and clearing all the configs in ~/.config/pulse/ It might be related to an update that was installed, it worked initially but after installing discord, connecting the mic and running pacman -Syu it has stopped working. pulseaudio.log

I'm curious as to why so many people have so much trouble utilizing Linux. I suspect it's mostly due to ignorance (that's not an insult, as ignorance is merely an unknowing). As I sat back and read these forums the reoccurring theme that I seemed to see was that people simply don't understand how Linux works. We've got people in here complaining that something isn't working, and blaming their Desktop Environment (i.e. GNOME/KDE/XFCE ect) as if it's somehow got anything to do with your drivers or operating system at all. Lets say you installed Pop!_OS, but for whatever reason your displays aren't functioning properly. It has nothing to do with Pop!_OS and more likely that you insatlled the wrong ISO (Pop has AMD/Nvidia specific ISO's) that does not contain the appropriate drivers for your distribution. Alternatively, maybe you opted for "Open Source" drivers instead of "Proprietary" drivers. In my experience, the Open Source drivers always require a more user technical approach in modification in order to get the drivers to function as intended. I care not to waste my time trying to fix public code when Proprietary drivers have functioned out the box for me every time on both AMD and Nvidia systems. This is a controversial topic within the Linux community but it's not something I'm going to hash out here; as I'm merely speaking on behalf of my own personal experiences on various machines. EDIT: I will note that I 100% refuse to utilize Wayland. Indeed, I run into issues every time I try. Sadly, Wayland is default on many systems, and there's not a lot of clarification on how to get set up on X11. I 100% recommend utilizing X11 for stability purposes. But do note, Wayland is on course to replace X11 eventually; it's just a bit too young to compete in terms of stability with many hardware configurations. Unless you're installing Linux with some offshoot distro, or trying to use dated hardware, there really shouldn't be any difficulty utilizing Linux. It should just work out the box post installation. I will note that I've seen more people have issues with Laptops than Desktop PC's; but I credit that to the fact laptops have quite different hardware. That said, I know little about Laptops as I have little regard for them. I'm not sharing these thoughts in an attempt to make anyone feel less about their experience; in fact quite the opposite. I would merely suggest that newcomers to Linux utilize a mainstream plug and play distro like Pop!_OS if you favor Ubuntu, or Manjaro if you favor Arch based systems. Ensure you select "Proprietary Drivers" upon installation and enjoy the experience from there on. EDIT: I highly recommend this for those who wish to do gaming of any kind on Linux. While Linux recently got full Anti-Cheat support across all of the mainstream Anti-Cheat developers; we are still waiting on these features to be enabled in many of the MMO/Multiplayer online games. Therefore, while many games you CAN play online with others, most of your competitive games are still unsupported. That said, for those who enjoy single player experiences, your library of compatible games is VAST. I personally play Halo (even infinite) on my system without issue =) so options are not as scarce as many lead to believe. Seek https://www.protondb.com for a list of currently compatible games and the progress reports for those not yet supported. A short list of some games I've played personally online/coop World of Warcraft Halo: Infinite Halo: The Master Chief Collection} Borderlands 3 Borderlands 2 Borderlands No Man's Sky Red Dead Online Way of the Hunter Battlefield 4 State of Decay 2 Divinity: Original Sin 2 DOOM Eternal Risk of Rain 2 Terraria ARMA Dying LIght GRIM Dawn Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands I'm not so ignorant as to deny that people run into issues beyond a mere incorrect drivers issue; but in the 3 years of operating Linux I have never had any issues that were not self inflicted. Of those issues, they only occurred when utilizing DIY distro's like Vanilla Arch, where it was my responsibility to ensure I had all the appropriate drivers. I wish ya'll luck in your Linux Endeavors. For those with a thirst for knowledge, I definitely encourage you check out the Arch Wiki (regardless of distro, it will help you 100% as it breaks down fundamentals mutual across all distro's) at https://wiki.archlinux.org/ Good luck AO

Hi, I'm currently trying to get GPU passthrough working on Arch Linux. I'm running an i7 7700k on an ASUS Prime Z-270 A motherboard. My Linux install is completely fresh. My problem is that everything I want to pass through works (Wifi Card, as well as the audio controller of my GPU), but the VGA Adapter of my GPU wont. I'm trying to get the VFIO-pci driver to grab my GPU, and according to dmesg, the VGA Adapter should be used by VFIO-pci. Hi, I need some help passing my gpu to my windows vm. I'm using Arch Linux with the latest kernel and the following gpus: GTX 1080 (which is placed in the first pcie slot to get x16, so it is used as boot gpu) GTX 1050 Ti (which is placed in the second last slot and only gets x8) IOMMU is supported by all devices, the gpus are in different iommu groups and I don't have an iGPU I want to passthough the 1080 to my qemu vm and use the 1050 Ti for the host system (maybe it's even possible to use it as boot gpu?) Is there someone who can help me getting there? If I forgot some information feel free to ask.

I just installed arch on a new drive, all in accordance with the official guide from wiki.archlinux.org. After restarting the computer, the boot menu didn't see the disk. I checked why on the old system and found out that the partition with the efi boot was empty. What should I do to run arch. Thanks in advance.

Hey all, I work on an electronics repair shop and I'm getting sick and tired of using the provided laptops which are still running windows 7 and painfully slow, and i got yelled at for running Manjaro from a flash drive once already. for some reason Since the Raspberry Pi 4 has two HDMI outputs, how usable would the 4gb model be as a daily computer running something like Manjaro ARM with two monitors? I need to stream 720p video pretty regularly so I'm not sure it it will be much better. trying to keep to a budget as far as small pc's go. I'm already aware it doesn't support GPU acceleration YET. I'm not asking for it to do much.

Hi! I've encountered a problem which makes me sick... I'm trying to avoid classic dual boot for better solution which is virtual Windows machine. But I can't deal with the problem that my GPU won't send any signal to HDMI or DVI-D port. But first.... My PC specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 MOBO: AsRock Fatality K6 Z170 RAM: G.Skill RipjawsV (16 GB) I've built linux-vfio from AUR (thanks to yaourt) and I'm using it right now. I've edited mkinitcpio.conf and added some modules. Also I'm using systemd-boot instead of GRUB, so I've done editing loader.conf and entries/linux-vfio.conf with proper stuff. My vfio.conf and blacklist.conf are in place and qemu can use UEFI to boot my virtual machine. I'm using virt-manager which is configured and ready to work. Here are my configs: /etc/mkinitcpio.conf: https://pastebin.com/Thqa3KJ1/etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/QUac89Wj/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: https://pastebin.com/JPXsUC1Z/boot/loader/loader.conf: https://pastebin.com/kPDV428p/boot/loader/entries/linux-vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/XdRmzbwS/etc/libvirt/qemu.conf: https://pastebin.com/2p04UXN1 And some outputs (look: SSs) I'm sure that I've done everything correctly but I can't get any output from my GPU under virt machune.... Any ideas? Help? Please, I'm dealing with this problem for 3 days ;-; And sorry for any mistakes, english isn't my mother language.
