  1. Source: https://9to5mac.com/2017/06/22/imac-pro-will-server-grade-processor-arm/ This would mean that the new iMac Pro would be using truly server grade platform rather than the new Core X series of chips from Intel. The report also adds that there may be an ARM co-processor as a Secure Enclave although Apple didn't mention anything about Touch ID during the keynote As for the credibility of this report, the same source did indeed report the specs of the refreshed iMacs back in April I guess Apple seems to be on a quest to put balls to the walls hardware in a pretty attractive AiO chassis. Also, I think it would be fantastic if Apple actually uses their AX chips to offload lighter tasks, saving alot of power and potentially operating even when the computer is turned off for like updates, but I guess this makes more sense in laptops than desktops
  2. Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11569/imagination-technologies-formally-puts-itself-up-for-sale As some of you may remember, close to 3 months ago Imagination, the company that has been designing the GPUs Apple has been using in their SoCs for generations now, announced that Apple had informed them that in a year or two Apple would stop using Imagination PowerVR GPUs in its SoCs. Due to around half of Imagination's revenue coming solely from Apple, this was a huge bombshell and shortly after Imagination stock fell A LOT. Before the announcement imagination stock was priced at around $280 per share, but immediately after it dropped to $100, though now it's managed to climb back to about $140 per share, or around half of what the stock was priced at before the announcement. Around a month after the initial announcement Imagination announced that they would be selling off the other parts of its business, focusing solely on its most profitable business, the GPU business. However, now it seems that Imagination has instead decided to, instead of trying to survive off its GPUs, put itself on sale. What would be quite interesting is if, in the end, Apple would turn out to be the one who purchases Imagination. A lot of features from the PowerVR architecture are used in iOS App Development, including PowerVR Texture Compression, so moving away from PowerVR wouldn't be an easy feat for Apple. However, with Imagination's market cap currently at around $500 million, or about half of what they were at before the initial announcement, if Apple bought them now they could purchase the company for significantly cheaper than what it might have initially cost them. At any rate, I'm quite interested to see who might end up purchasing Imagination. There are lots of companies out there that might be potential buyers and regardless of who will end up purchasing Imagination this might end up changing the mobile SoC market in the future.
  3. I'm posting this because I honestly find it kind of funny, but it appears that an Internal presentation that Apple gave on preventing leaks of Apple products has been leaked. According to the reports of this presentation, it talks about your basic workplace security, how Apple goes about investigating product leaks and reasons why your co-workers may want to leak an Apple Product. Some of the highlights from the article include: https://theoutline.com/post/1766/leaked-recording-inside-apple-s-global-war-on-leakers It is definitely interesting to read this and gives an interesting insight on Apple's internal security. Can't say I blame Apple too much for having strong security to prevent leaks of information, but some of the stuff in this presentation just reads really funny to me.
  4. Hey guys, before I start, I'm new to this forum I live in UK and I'm going to college next year and then uni Should i build a gaming pc or buy a laptop? I was thinking of buying a MacBook Pro with touchbar (15 inch) but I'm not sure at all what to buy Any opinions? Budget up to £3200 EDIT: Thanks guys, I'll be purchasing my new MacBook Pro 2017 - 15 inch with touchbar Again, thank's for your precious help
  5. iPhone 8 takes chipsets Stumbled across this while on Reddit, thought I'd post here. I personally think they are probably going to buy more chips due to the iPhone being popular. "Component orders for the iPhone 8 are creating a worldwide shortage of DRAM and NAND chips, with competitors struggling to secure their own supplies, says a report." -Ben Lovejoy
  6. With all the news that came out of Apple's WWDC this week, I haven't seen too much mentioned about iOS 11 yet. With the release of iOS 11 though, Apple is doing away with their support for the older 32-bit only processors on the iPhones and iPads, meaning that only the iPhone 5S and later devices will be able to receive this update. This also means that Apps running only in 32-bit mode will not be available in the iOS 11 App Store. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40172019 https://arstechnica.com/apple/2017/06/goodbye-32-bit-ios-11-ends-support-for-the-iphone-5-and-the-ipad-4/ Some other iOS 11 improvements include: iMessage: redesigned app drawer for iMesage apps and stickers, automatically sync messages to iCloud, Apple Pay integration to pay people through iMessage and use TouchID to confirm payments. Siri: On-device learning about user pertinent features, translation beta, male voice option. Photos & Memories: Better low-light photos, machine learning to identify 'memories' HomeKit & Control Center: added speaker category to HomeKit to control smart speakers using AirPlay 2, Multi-Room Audio Support Maps & Carplay: Apple Maps has detailed floorplans & directories for malls and detailed airport information, maps will show speed limits and lane guidance, Do Not Disturb while Driving Mode Apple Music: Social feature to see what friends are listening to, MusicKit API to build Apple Music into Apps. App Store: Today tab for popular apps on a daily basis, new overhauled look with larger images, shorter app review time for developers, phased release of apps by developers. https://arstechnica.com/apple/2017/06/ios-11-will-bring-big-updates-to-siri-imessages-apple-pay-and-more/ Overall, these seem like good incremental improvements to iOS, however I think that the direction of dropping support for 32-bit will definitely have an impact and will probably make the 64-bit apps run a lot faster. Not sure if this will require them to boost the on board RAM of future iOS devices and if some of the older supported iOS devices will have RAM limitations issues in the future, but it still seems like a good move in the long run...
  7. Before anything, I live in UK I've made recently a topic asking what laptop should I get I'm entering medical school, I don't care about price, only about portability, battery life and programs compatible with the os. I'm not sure if I buy: MacBook Pro 15" 2017 with Touchbar Microsoft Surface Pro 5 Asus ZenBook Pro I really need an opinion P.s. I'm going to Oxford University (UK) if that helps

  10. New phones these days are constantly becoming more rugged and water resistant. But the one thing most consumers are currently unaware of is how warranty policies have failed to keep up with modern technology to protect the buyer from product defects. I want to share a short story and in turn would like to know how many of you have had this experience. Being a person who spends a fair amount of time outdoors where situations frequently where the average consumer electronic device would fail, I needed something that would stand up to the environment. So I recently picked up Samsung's top-of-the-line rugged and water resistant phone, the Galaxy s7 Active. Using the phone for a couple of days and enjoying all the features Samsung brings to the table. Day 4 and I am going on a kayaking trip out to a local lake. Nearing the end of the trip I start to remember all the commercials and adverts that Samsung put out showing the amazing capabilities of this device and the ability to take underwater photographs. So I go to try to line up a shot of a lillypad from below. Within seconds of touching the water the phone fails. Extremely disappointed I am at this time with my brand new phone! I do a little self investigation and find that the screen has a little give in it and the device was likely not sealed properly around the bezel. However I have thoughts of relief (much like many people do before using an IP68 rated device in water) "Well the device is advertised and rated as waterproof/water resistant so my warranty will cover it, no worries!"; Though two weeks later after receiving my device back from Samsung I was in for a shock. They did not repair the device or even replace it. After speaking with US customer warranty relations they informed me that under no circumstances will any device that Samsung produces ever be repaired or replaced under warranty if the damage is water related. Even for devices advertised to be water resistant or waterproof!! Here I was with a $700 paper weight that lasted a mere 4 days. Samsung's failure to meet my products marked IP68 rating and failure to right a wrong that was clearly no fault of my own has left me flabbergasted. But it doesn't stop here. Unfortunately in this modern era I need a phone and at this point I would not being pushing more money into the pockets of Samsung. So I began a research product to see how other companies would have handled this situation. It is saddening... Nearly all smartphone manufactures would have screwed me just as hard, Apple, LG, ect... The only company I spoke with where the water damage would have be covered by the manufacturing warranty was Caterpillar (not exactly at the cutting edge of smartphone performance unfortunately) and even the Caterpillar S60, a phone rated to 5 meters in water depth has had many reported failures due to water ingress. IS THERE NO COMPANY that can hold a promise to the IP68 rating and have the decency to back that up with a manufacture warranty?? This is crazy... How many of you have had this experience? I feel until warranty policies change, if using a waterproof or water resistant smartphone in a wet environment this might as well be the cellphone equivalent of Russian Roulette... How can I/we show companies the dissatisfaction in these business practices?
  11. Yesterday my mom bought me a USB Type C cable not from apple, the original one seems missing, not sure. When i use it at some point it says "this accessory or charger is not original and may not perform well with this device". My mom says "it is fine" and i did not tell this yet to my dad because he is the owner and he gave me (i think?) this incredible phone to replace my 4.5" Android phone. also i am asking in myself what can be worse from using a non authorized accessory? What do you guys think? Any feedbacks can be helpful thank you!
  12. Sooooo, you probably have heard of Apple announcing the "iMac Pro" (If you watch the WAN Show you will definetly). The Features sound pretty darn cool (I will ignore the price), with up to 18 Cores, 128GB Ram, 4TB of Storage at 3GB/s and more stuff. The Thing is, I am not sure how Apple will do some of the stuff and would like to know the Community's oppinion. For Example the Storage: What do you think? Two M.2s in Raid 0? Or the GODDAMN MONITOR SUPPORT: Native 5K Screen PLUS Two additional ones over Thunderbolt 3!? That's almost 44 MILLION Pixels! Will Vega be that powerful to support it on one GPU at decent FPS? Or will a, for example, SLI Setup with 1080Ti's be enough (then we could predict Vega performance, right? Right?)?
  13. Google may been working to design custom SOC's for future mobile devices. A recent hire at Google indicates big changes are coming for future versions of the Pixel phone. It seems that google may have just hired the ex-apple micro-architect, Manu Gulati, who worked on the development of apples SOC's for nearly eight years. this is a completely new path for google as they what do you guys think? will google be able to utilize the knowledge of an ex-apple employee and leap-frog apple in terms of performance? Where do you think google will start, in the creation of SOC's? 16. I am going to start buying parts for my pc soon (still don't have all of the money xd) I am currently using a 2011 27" imac with a 2400, a 1GB HD 6970M and 12gb of DDR3 of 1333mhz RAM. Needless to say I need an upgrade to meet my video editing AND gaming needs. The only thing still good on this imac is the BEAUTIFUL 1440p IPS display. I mean, my uncle uses his pc for programming and watching movies and he has a $650 27" IPS monitor that this imac display that this imac display is just as good as. I was originally going to sell my current imac to pay for parts but than I heard that you can use your imac as an external monitor (Also, no one wants this outdated potato). I know you can use it with other imacs and macbooks but IDK about PC. I think you can use it with PC through displayport and maybe thunderbolt. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about this because this is an amazing 1440p display that could save me lots of money on a monitor (and would be better than a monitor I would be able to afford).
  17. We could be getting Vega GPUs in late July, and if specs are to be believed, things are looking great for Team Red! The post then goes on to talk about potential pricing schemes and comparing Vega to RX 500 and GTX 1080
  18. Found this kind of interesting considering all of the Right-to-Repair issues currently going on... It appears that Apple is initiating a 'pilot program' to make some of their iPhone calibration machines available to some 'certified repair partners'. http://www.techspot.com/news/69584-apple-share-iphone-repair-tools-third-party-shops.html While I doubt that this will ever substitute for a Right-to-Repair bill that allows for independent outfits to conduct repairs, it is interesting to see that Apple may be opening the doors just a crack. Of course, on the paranoid side of things, this may also be a way for Apple to try and kill Right to Repair legislation by saying that if a company is 'fully-certified' then they will have access to their tools for a cost. I can kind of understand a company wanting only a certified partner conducting repairs to electronics, however, at the same time, I could also see a consumer who has a product that is already beyond the warranty period wanting to be able to get a repair done to keep it running without having to pay for what a 'fully-certified' shop may end up charging. UPDATE: So I'm fairly certain that this is directly related to the earlier article concerning the iPhone calibration, but now we're getting a better idea of the scale that they are planning to role out these machines to... According to a TechReport article, Apple is looking at rolling this out to around '400 authorized third-party repair centers in 25 countries' including Best Buy retailers by the end of 2017. http://techreport.com/news/32058/iphone-screen-repair-machines-coming-to-best-buy-stores Still don't buy the whole 'unrelated to right-to-repair deal', but this should be good to some consumers who would otherwise have been required to send their devices a further distance. I doubt it will drop screen repair costs any though. Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-repair-exclusive-idUSKBN18Y0BF?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FtechnologyNews+(Reuters+Technology+News)

  20. Hey guys!, I've visited http://staingate.org and was concerned for my new MacBook. I've contacted Apple support (online chat) and they told me that "Older MacBook Pro computers are susceptible to this issue, however your computer should not be.". However, after cleaning my screen with a retina wet wipe, I've noticed a straight line crossing my screen that is about the same location as the spacebar would be when the lid would be closed. I've made a picture (http://i.imgur.com/mI77zuo.jpg). The vertical lines are just lines from the recently used retina wet wipe, but I have encircled (with red) the horizontal line that won't come off. Am I suffering from #Staingate?
  21. Apple talked a bit about their added external GPU support yesterday and announced a Dev Kit would come to market immediately. I when to apples developer website and found the purchase page for the Dev Kit, and ITS A GREAT DEAL! The kit for $600 comes with: Sonnet external GPU chassis with Thunderbolt 3 and 350W power supply - ? AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics card - $260 Belkin USB-C to 4-port USB-A hub - $50 Promo code for $100 towards the purchase of HTC Vive VR headset - $100 Doing the math, this is a great deal for that means that even though we don't know how much the chassis will cost, it has to be below $190, because of the prices of the other accessories. Even if you buy with the intention of not using the $100 toward the Vive, thats still 290 for an external Thunderbolt 3 GPU dock. Thats compered to the other popular Thunderbolt 3 dock the Razor Core at $500.

  23. Hey, So i have a galaxy s7 edge, great phone but the battery is awful if i'm honest, i only get around 4 hours of SOT now i know there are people who get over 6 hours of SOT even 7 but i've never gotten that much, I've done everything i can , i've rooted and flashed custom kernels , roms etc. but it's still the same. So i recently got a chance to swap my S7 edge to an IPhone 7 ( Not the plus model but the normal smaller IPhone 7), The only reason i wanna go for an iphone is battery life, everyone keeps on saying that the battery on the iPhone 7 is wayyyyy better than the s7 edge, now that might be due to the tiny screen but a good battery is all i need right now as i use my phone like every minute of the day. So before i swap i want to know if the iphone 7 can last a day of heavy usage ? Any real life battery tests ???? How much SOT do you get? Standby Times?? Sorry for the really long explanation and everything Hope to get an answer soon Thanks
  24. So, I just want to start off by saying that I have considered buying the new macbook with touchbar. But after looking around at other options I really would want something with better specs. I have landed on the newest razer blade 14" with the updated i7-7700HQ . I would prefer to stay under 3500 €. I need this laptop to be portable and have good enough specs for programming/IT work. It wouldn't if it could handle some light gaming but it doesn't have to be a "gaming" laptop. Primarily thin, light, portable and good specs.
  25. Hello, I am in the market to buy a laptop for college next year. My university, for engineering majors, requires students to buy one of the 5 prescribed computers. Out of those 5 I have narrowed it down the two, but cannot select between them. The two are listed below. Price is a factor, but more importantly I want a laptop that can last long and perform well. Please help me out! I don’t want a computer that is only good looking on paper, but one that will actually get the job done.
