PayPal Problem - Some payments not going through   20 May 2017

PayPal appears to be experiencing problems at the moment, resulting in people being billed but the transaction showing as failed on our end. If you have signed up for a new subscription, and the transaction is showing as pending on the forum, so you haven't gained floatplane access yet, and you have waited more than 10 minutes after purchasing it in PayPal, please go to https://linustechtips.com/main/failed_transaction_fix.php and follow the instructions. If you have any issues, please send me a PM (hover over my picture or username and click "message"), including the transaction ID, and I will try and sort it out for you.

  1. Hey Linus, Try to make a proper water-cooled Macbook using water-block, pump & radiator!! Please make a video to show what is its performance. If a proper system is created we could know the accurate performance!! Please Do It!!
  2. Woman was reportedly burned by Beats headphones, Apple blames 'third-party' AAA batteries The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/19/15666082/apple-headphones-fire-flight-explosion-beats-battery Well this is horrible and yet another case of battery explosions. The technology industry better take a better stance on batteries. Battery manufacturer have got to make sure that this kind of stuff never happens. The cause for this incident by the looks of it was an old pair of Beats that used AAA batteries and the batteries that this user used malfunctioned an exploded. However this is all based of Apple's own investigation.
  3. Yeah. I know this is a weird place to be asking this but I have a question. I have a MacBook Air A1466 that was given to me by a friend, that I am trying to fix up to sell and get a GPU upgrade (yay!) but am having an issue with it. I just cannot get it to boot. I have tried everything including: SMC Reset PRAM Reset Static Reset (Remove all power hold down power button) Attempting to power on through the pads on the logic board. Contacting Apple support (they didn't know what a SSD was somehow) Heres the thing I've been wondering. there is no SSD in the system, and the system seems to have fully charged itself while its been plugged into the power adapter without me messing with it. I feel like the mac is working fine except for the boot process, and I feel it could have something to do with the missing SSD. I've never head of something like that, but since I have already ordered a 128GB M.2 SSD for use in my main rig, I am planning on testing that tomorrow. Please also note that I barley ever work on Macs and when I do it's basic things like an OS reinstall or data recovery. Thanks for any input you may have!
  4. So im going to start by saying I have little experience when working with Apple products. Okay, now to my question. So I got my hands on a Mac Pro 1,1 A1186. I Want to upgrade/update its firmware to the 2,1 so that I can upgrade the 2 Dual Core Xeons to 2 Quad core Xeons (either a pair of Xeon X5355 or a pair of Xeon E5462 which ever works better). Thats the bottom line. Ive tried looking at a few forums but end up getting lost quite fast. Here are the Specs CPU: RAM: OS HDD: 3 Extra HDDs GPU: 2 x Nvidia 7300GT (256MB VRAM) OS X: 10.7.5 I have alot of extra GPUs laying around, mostly older models but have more VRAM, Id love to get feedback on what I need hardware wise, preparation, and finally upgrading the firmware to allow the CPU upgrade. Thanks alot for all of your time!
  5. Here is my wishlist for apple's 2017 laptop lineup. Feel free to add your own ideas. Kill MacBook Air. 6. So recently I got my hands on some Mac Pro originals (Model A1186). The one I booted first was fine and got into the first time setup "Please select a language" blah de blah. So I turned it off and setup it back up on my desk. But when I tried to boot it back up it just got stuck on the white screen and didnt progress further. I looked inside and the CPU B fail LED was lit but it still continued to boot upto the white screen. After leaving it on for like 20MIN eventually it would give me the operating system not found symbol (Grey Folder with White Question mark inside). So I took out my old OS X bootable drive and even made a USB Bootable drive. When I attempt boot while holding "option" it gives me the white screen and the cursor and eventually it gives me option after 15-20min of waiting. Then when I select an option it just freezes and doesnt go any further. Any suggestions?
  7. If lets say I have a macbook pro that is connected to 2 external drive. Drive A is a 1TB HDD and it is for my own usage. (photos and videos etc) Drive B is a 2TB HDD Timemachine back up drive. Can the time machine back up my external drive A and my internal drive at the same time? Also I've heard some user on reddit said that apple's time machine does not work very well with NAS/time capsule? Is it true? People who use time machine, did you connect your mac to an external drive? Or using NAS/ time capsule to back up? How does it work out for you?
  8. source: https://www.khronos.org/opencl/ despite it's name, OpenCL is not an open source standard OpenCL was created by Apple in 2009 and handed to the Khronos Group to maintain it - the standard is open, it means that licenced HW and SW manufacturers can forward proposals to add to the existing standard or propose features for a new version the Khronos Group, for the 1st time, has also released the source code on GitHub to allow manufacturers to fully test their implementation https://github.com/KhronosGroup
  9. In what was a high profile move earlier this year, Apple sued Qualcomm after Qualcomm held $1b in rebates back when Apple joined South Korea's lawsuit to testify against Qualcomm's patent abuse. Well now Samsung and Intel have joined the fray with Samsung claiming that Qualcomm is killing their ability to sell their own Exynos chips, and Intel is claiming that their licensing practices prohibit competitors to Qualcomm being cost effective. Souce: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/15/15640498/samsung-intel-back-ftc-lawsuit-qualcomm My take - good riddance. Yes, they own the patent, but they've been abusing the power associated with it and instead of charging royalties on the value of the license contribution, they have been charging royalties on the final value of the product sold... Even Intel's modems used in the iPhone earn Qualcomm royalties on the value of the iPhone when sold.
  10. Hello community I have never been fond of forums and simply have not posted much, I'll make this short. I haven't introduced myself but I suppose a teaser to my upcoming build log might work. I am a repair shop owner from Bullhead Arizona. We tend to have a lot of older people coming in recycling their old computers at our shop, so for a while I have been collecting and planning out sleeper builds. I figured it's about time to show people the 90% finished product now that it is functioning under it's own power fully sealed. I will complete a formal Build-Log once I finish making the I/O passthrough panel to be placed where the stock I/O used to be. Build Name: iMac R5x CPU: AMD Ryzen R5 1500X GPU: Asus Nvidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB Memory: 8GB DDR4 (2400) Storage: 1Tb Western Digital Black Oh yeah, I will also try to dual boot or VM a Mac OS into her. Most likely gonna be a VM however.

  12. Holy crap! I searched the internet high and low for an ios 9.3.5 jailbreak, and nothing! Does anyone have a full jailbreak for ios 9.3.5?
  13. According to an article on Tweakers, Apple tried to prevent the judge from giving a verdict by arguing that the woman in question was already offered everything that she demanded by Apple, but the objection was rejected by the judge. This verdict could be used for other lawsuits or even a class action lawsuit. I believe Apple should have provided the woman with a brand new product or a repair. A refurbished or remanufactured product isn't new, it could contain parts that are very worn-out. If a manufacturer can't repair your product, you should always get a brand new one, otherwise you could get a worse product. What do you think? Source
  14. In the continuing legal saga between Apple and Qualcomm, Qualcomm is planning to petition the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban imports of iPhones into the US. http://www.techspot.com/news/69187-qualcomm-reportedly-asks-itc-ban-us-iphone-imports.html https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-03/qualcomm-said-to-seek-u-s-import-ban-for-iphones I severely doubt that the ITC will grant this, but if so, that could put a dent into potential iPhone sales for Apple as the US supposedly counts for something around 40% of their sales market. Seems more like a strong arm tactic by Qualcomm to get Apple to strike some kind of court settlement or deal.
  15. Hi! so recently I was browsing craigslist trying to find a cheap macbook pro for school and I came across this computer. The seller says that it can't get past the system restore point so he removed the HDD and is selling for parts. I was wondering if the issue was just his hard drive and if i were to put a new one in and try to reinstall the OS that would fix the problem. Or is this not worth the trouble. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/sop/6114795396.html
  16. So as my title says im hoping to upgrade an old mac pro, the exact model is the A1186 (MA35LL/A). As of now it has the X5150s but I bought a pair of E5462 (Quad Core @ 2.8ghz 80Watts) and a pair of X5355 (Quad Core @ 2.66ghz 120Watts). It has 18GB of Crucial ECC Ram (4 x 2GB, 2 x 1GB , 2 x 4GB). I have a 500GB Seagate drive installed but I wanted to know if it supports SAS drives as I have a 3tb Seagate one lying around. Lastly I wanted to get a better GPU for it and cant find an exact list of compatible GPUs. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  17. Following the appearance of Apple's self-driving car tech in California, it is now being reported that Samsung has gained permission to test it's own version in South Korea. They will apparently be using a kitted out Hyundai, making it an all-Korean project. Still not fully sure if I trust this kind of thing or not - had a few near misses just using Ford's self parking system. http://www.kitguru.net/channel/generaltech/matthew-wilson/samsung-is-also-testing-its-own-self-driving-car-tech/
  18. Hey LTTF, I posted this similar question on Reddit but never got a helpful response apart from the fact that people told me I was wrong. I need to retire my Macbook Pro Mid 2010. It's getting slow, clunky, apps don't work as good as they used to once do and I don't particularly want to blow any more money into this machine. I was given it by my girlfriend 2 years ago when she got her iMac and I've basically replaced my desktop PC with it as I use it 24/7. But now, I feel as if I need an upgrade as I want more speed, performance and a much nicer screen (not like the horrible 720p-ish screen my MBP has, ew) I don't have a set price point but preferably something under £1000. I want speed, enough to deal with at least Photoshop CC but aside from that I need to be able to do college work, website development etc. I was thinking a 2013-2014 MBP with the i5, 8/16GB of RAM and the 256GB SSD but am not sure. Any by all means, if you have a windows-equivalent laptop suggestion please suggest it below as I love both OSs equally!
  19. I am going to start buying parts for my pc soon (still don't have all of the money xd) I am currently using a 2011 27" imac with a 2400, a 1GB HD 6970M and 12gb of DDR3 of 1333mhz RAM. Needless to say I need an upgrade to meet my video editing AND gaming needs. The only thing still good on this imac is the BEAUTIFUL 1440p IPS display. I mean, my uncle uses his pc for programming and watching movies and he has a $650 27" IPS monitor that this imac display that this imac display is just as good as. I was originally going to sell my current imac to pay for parts but than I heard that you can use your imac as an external monitor (Also, no one wants this outdated potato). I know you can use it with other imacs and macbooks but IDK about PC. I think you can use it with PC through displayport and maybe thunderbolt. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about this because this is an amazing 1440p display that could save me lots of money on a monitor (and would be better than a monitor I would be able to afford).
  20. Hi! I am looking to buy a used 13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro either modified or bone stock (unmodified). I would prefer to buy one bone stock since I'd like to modify it myself, but what would you guys think is a fair price for a bone stock or modified 13 Inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro? The specs for a bone stock model are 4GB of DDR3 RAM, i5 3210m @2.5GHz, 500GB 5,400 RPM HDD, and a optical drive. I see bone stock models going for around $500 to $550 on Craigslist in my area, but I think that's a bit nuts and overpriced... What are your guys thoughts and inputs? Please vote in the polls and if the option isn't in the polls then please drop a comment down bellow on what you think is a fair price for a 13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro that is either bone stock or modified.
  21. This is a rumor that's mostly likely to be true in my opinion. Source: CNET This might be an issue to a few wireless carriers who have now deployed gigabit LTE but for many, it's not. My wireless carrier claims 42 mbps down but in my area, it maxes out to around 15-35 depending on congestion. The reason I'm seeing why Apple is sourcing LTE modems from two different companies is that Qualcomm can't keep up with the demand but as it turns out, AT&T/T-Mobile iPhone 7/7+ is using an Intel modem that performs not as good as the Qualcomm modem equipped Verizon/Sprint iPhone 7/7+. So yeah, not that much of an issue for me and hopefully I'm getting the next iPhone.
  22. Had to post this for the laugh factor of it although it might be moved to off-topic... The people over at Merriam Webster may not actually be Apple fans judging by one of the quotes they use in the definition for 'Sheeple'. In an article at the Verge, it's been noticed that one of the quotes on the use of the word Sheeple is from a 2015 news roundup from CNN as follows: http://www.theverge.com/tldr/2017/4/28/15473858/apple-merriam-webster-sheeple-definition-iphone-ipad Here is a link to the Merriam Webster site: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sheeple As I said, it is kind of funny, although there may be some people who take this a bit too seriously... On a serious note though to all the sheeple out there, any person can be a sheeple for any tech company, not just Apple.
  23. I am planning to buy a mobile workstation for my daily workflows, occasional 4K editing and a lot of Illustrator / Photoshop / InDesign.. I do not have a lot of money to spend on a laptop (~1500$). I looked over the internet and I found the mid 2014 model with the NVIDIA card and a 512GB SSD... This should be the best choice for me, I think. What's your opinion guys, is it worth it nowadays, should I opt for something else? Another great choice for me would be the 2015 Dell XPS 15 with the 1080p panel - is it okay for print ready work? I've searched online and it covers 95% of sRGB, but I couldn't find how much it covers from the Adobe color spectrum. Which panel is better? The 4K display would be a far better alternative, but my pocket is really crying at this moment. Thanks!
  24. Hey there, i have already posted this on instructables.com, but i thought it would also be noteworthy to share with you. Because i always loved the Apple design and in particular their logo, i always thought of an way to express this. After i bought a new Laptop at the end of 2013, i had a spare laptop. I used the old 2009 MacBookPro as an hub for some of my bitcoinminers, until it completely broke down last year. So the time had come to build an awesome MacBook-Backpanel-Lamp. (and its RGB) After you gathered all the parts (well just the broken laptop and some tools and RGB LEDs) you can start removing unnecessary parts from the laptop back. If your laptop back is dirty as mine you can clean it with a little bit of acetone, so that it looks nice. Some of the unnecessary parts could be: sponge, some plastic parts, screws, and a lot more. So if everything unnecessary is removed, you can also clean the inside of the laptop back with acetone, incase there is any thing left. If there is a stamp with the date on it when the laptop back was assembled you can exchange the date with the date when you have built the lamp, to remember when you have built it. When every thing is cleaned you can draw guiding lines where you put the spacer blocks . Also mark the place where you have to place the power supply and the receiver for the remote control. Unfortunately, in my case i had to place the receiver visible on the upper left corner, because the signal was to weak. And do not forget to think about where you want to put the LED stripes, so that you have enough space to glue in the stripes. First you have to cut the spacer blocks. In my case, i had to cut six of them: four 10cm long ones and two other ones, for those the size doesn't matter because there only for hanging the lamp to the wall. When you have cut all the pieces you can, if you want, paint them white. Now while the paint is drying we move over to the electronics. First you glue in the power supply and decide where the LED strip will start, look at one of the pictures to know how i did it. Than you can also glue in the receiver for the remote control, but first test the signal strength of you remote so that you can decide where you have to stick the receiver. When thats done you can cut the LED stripes to length, measure out, that the strip goes all around the laptop case as shown in the picture. In my case i had to cut: two 3 section strips, two 2 section strips and five one section strips (four of these are for the apple logo). Then you can dry fit them, if the fit nicely and cover the area you want to fill with light, you can solder them together. If there is a silicone protection layer over the contact points remove it and than solder the contact points together. Always make sure you solder the correct pins together or that the solder joints do not touch each other. You can alway test the connections by plugging in the power and turning the LED stripes on. When you have soldered the contact points together make sure that no wire is sticking up, to make sure that doesn't happen glue everything in place. You can also isolate the contact points with hot glue. The more glue the better! Now we can move back to the spacers and glue them on. That done you can start soldering the remaining strips together and then glue them on to the spacer blocks as shown in a picture. Please note that you must leave a little bit of space for the cable management. One TIP: First make sure the last four strips work before sticking them on. Now the electrics are done. Remember the two spacer blocks ? Hope so, because now you have to add to them frame holders and glue the blocks on the same level on the laptop back as shown in the picture. Now you can hang it on the wall where ever you want it to hang. The last thing you want to do is, to glue some light defusing material over the logo, because it simply looks better than a normal plexi glas logo. In addition to that you can add some light reflecting material, like a CD or aluminium foil over the spacer blocks, so that the LEDs in that compartment only light up the logo. I hope you had fun building it and that it looks as cool as mine or maybe even better.
  25. Spoiler: Apple is addressing issues that mainstream users have been plagued with for awhile now: poor performance from excessive runtime and always running software, and their solution isn't the simple answer of more ram. This new development is pushing Windows-based manufacturers to innovate, such as a food-proof desktop from HP Field, J. G. (2017, April 24). Apple invents new laptop designed to be turned off once in a while. The Beaverton. Retrieved from https://www.thebeaverton.com/2017/04/apple-invents-new-laptop-designed-turned-off/
