Summary Apple plans to allow some developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from websites in EU countries. However, developers must follow Apple's strict rules and meet notarization requirements to protect the integrity of the platform. Users must approve the developer in the settings of their iPhone and a system window will display information that the developer has submitted to Apple for review. Only major developers who meet specific criteria, including one million first annual installations in the EU, will be able to use this distribution method. Quotes My thoughts The fact that this is limited to only big major developers is such a shame, since this means that the ability to distribute iOS apps via websites will not available for 99% of all developers. Also, it's worth discussing if most users will even care to go trough the hoops of approving developers from websites just to avoid the App Store. Once again, Apple has made the option of distributing and downloading from outside of the App Store such a painful process for both developers and consumers that I doubt that the DMA (Digital Markets Act) from the European Unionen will have much effect at all in the end. Summary Epic Games says Apple has taken down its newly reinstated developer account in the EU. In a blog post, Epic partially blames a tweet where they criticized Apple's reason for doing so. Epic says this hinders its plans to launch a competing app marketplace in the EU. The game maker also says that Apple has called them a "threat to their ecosystem." The tweet(s) in question: Quotes My thoughts I really like Apple's products, but they are a very toxic company and very hostile to their developers and users. As a iOS/macOS developer myself, I can say that Apple has made the EU's Digital Markets Acts as horrible for developers as possible by making it an unattractive, expensive, and frustrating experience when trying to use anything other than the App Store to distribute apps. Hello, I searched the forums and the broader internet but couldn't find a good comparison of an M3 Max vs an equivalent Intel or AMD processor. A lot of the comparison sites just don't have comparative fields for Apple vs Intel processors. (Aka price to performance calcs). Can anyone point me to a good Intel or AMD processor that would be on-par with an M3 Max chip? I certainly don't need an Intel Core i9-14900k, but I am looking forward to using a proper Desktop class processor. I have not built a computer for about a decade. I currently have a 16" m1 Pro MBP, and an m2 MBA for work. Looking to build a gaming, 3D modeling, and 4k video editing windows PC. I plan to game at 1440p and don't care about ray tracing. I won't be playing many AAA games like Cyberpunk or Tomb Raider, more indy titles. So 1440p at 120hz will be my target monitor. Perhaps a second monitor at 4k with great color accuracy but a low refresh rate. Thank you!

Tips for limiting smartphone screen time and addiction?
creat0r posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
I have a really hard time controlling how much time I spend on my iPhone. Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Subway Surfers etc. they just suck me right in every time I grab my iPhone. I have tried and considered multiple different alternatives, and so far nothing has really helped: Limit Screen Time in iOS Settings for these apps: didn't help because you can continuously just click on the button to get more screen time. Delete addicting apps: made it super annoying to communicate with my friends since we communicate in group chats on Snapchat and a lot of features (like video messages) doesn't work on the Snapchat web app for desktops. Also, it was very easy to just re-download these apps. Buy an old "dumb" phone: since I have my own business I need to always have quick access to email, which is impossible on an old phone. Also, being able to get notifications if one of my stock investments suddenly would drop is really important. I might try to always have my iPhone's battery charged <20% so I can only use it for important SMS, email, and pay for food/travel with Apple Pay. Feels a little bit scary if the battery would die, though... I also though I could enable Down Time in iOS settings and have an advanced long passcode for it that I keep in my drawer at home (so I can't access it at work), but apparently you can only enable this for kids (if I'm not mistaken). Yes I know I should just stop, but that's not how addiction works. What's your guys experience with this? -
Summary Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) is the first big YouTuber to unbox the Apple Vision Pro, Apple's first "spatial computing" product. Brownlee published a video on his channel this Tuesday unboxing the Vision Pro, and giving some spontaneous reactions to it. Quotes My thoughts Very luxurious unboxing experience, just as you would expect from Apple. The product seems to scream quality and technical innovation in some areas. Arguably, this will be the best AR headset on the market. However, I think there are significantly better VR headsets out there. The weight and the short battery life will probably result in you not being able to spend too much time in this headset. However, one question still remains: who is this product for? Summary For EU users, iOS 17.4 removes the ability to install PWA (Progressive Web Apps) on Apple devices. This change rolls out among a long list of other changes to comply with the EU’s recent rulings, forcing Apple to open up their platforms to third-party stores for apps, web browsers etc. Apple is therefore making these changes in accordance with this the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Quotes My thoughts It sucks that they do this since I use it. Probably a tactic to make using anything but a real native app a horrible experience. And since using third-party app stores seems like it’ll be a major headache for the average user, this will just force even more users to use Apple’s App Store. I won't lie, I love my Apple Studio Display, it's the best peripheral investment I've made even beating out my Logitech MX Master and Mechanical for Mac series peripherals. Impeccable visual fidelity Built in charging via USB C Built in speakers that sound really good (relative to monitor and laptop speakers) Built in camera and mic that just work While not a specification item, I truly do love that its made of glass and metal on the exterior for the most part giving it an incredibly durable look and feel But as much as I love it, I can't help but think Apple could've changed a few annoyances and made it truly the best display on the market (not best bang for buck, just best in general for the general consumer market). Removable power plug, like really, I shouldn't need a special tool to remove it Better quality camera, there should be plenty of space for it Increased compatibility with Windows (a lot of us Apple users still use Windows, I personally keep an Intel MacBook Pro around just for Windows and playing games, even when the Intel Mac was my main machine I still duel booted it so I could play the occasional PC only game) 60Hz refresh rate for the price feels a bit low, like make it 120Hz I honestly feel if Apple were to make these adjustments in an Apple Studio Display 2 they could have potentially the best consumer computer display, especially when it comes to being a simple two cable plug and play operation.

Summary According to research firm Omdia, the Apple Vision Pro's bill of materials is $1,542. The most expensive part is the 1.25-inch Sony Semiconductor display, which enhances the virtual experience with high pixel density and lifelike colors. Apple pays approximately $228 for each Micro OLED display used in their Vision Pro headset. The second most expensive part in the Vision Pro is the main processor, the Apple M2 chip. Quotes My thoughts The high price of some components doesn't surprise me since there's some very high-end hardware in this product. It would be interesting to know what Apple's profit margin for the Vision Pro is, after things like R&D becomes part of the calculation. What's Microsoft's/Window's modern day equivalent to Apple's free* macOS creative apps like iMovie & GarageBand? For example, from my understanding, software like Windows Movie Maker is no longer a thing in Windows 11? My sister recently switched from macOS to Windows and is looking for a free and easy-to-learn iMovie-replacement. (*Yes I know they're technically not free since you're paying for them with the Apple tax for hardware and services).

I recently bought my mom for her birthday an Apple Watch SE Gen 2 that she's been asking for a long time when I gave it to her and started the set up I found out that my mom's iPhone 8 plus which runs ios 16.2 CAN'T PAIR WITH THE DARN WATCH!!!!!!!! It turns out that Apple decided that you need the IOS 17 you like it or not to use the watch and even though watch OS 9 worked perfectly with iOS 16 this new update doesn't. And I know is my fault for not checking the compatibility versions so this didn't happen the thing is that this is not user-friendly at all, many people who don't understand technology and compatibility stuff will see this thing on Amazon and think that they can just buy it and use it daily and believe it or not there is a lot of ios 16 iPhone users out there, and the worst part is that most of us don't live in countries where apple stores are a thing.

Summary The EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) will bring huge changes to iOS 17.4 - but only for European customers. These include alternative app stores, third party payments and a browser selection prompt to name a few. Apple's news release focuses heavily on how this will negatively impact user experience. Quotes My thoughts Overall I like the direction this is moving in and this could turn iPhones into a more capable and flexible platform. I'm very concerned about parts which seem to fall in the "malicious compliance" category. The notarization of all apps could be abused. The reported experiences with the Floatplane app do not fill me with confidence this will be a transparent and fast process. Even more concerning is the core technology fee. Any app developer with more than 1 million annual installs would have to pay at least $500,000 - apparently without accounting for the developers revenue of the app. Sources https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/01/apple-announces-changes-to-ios-safari-and-the-app-store-in-the-european-union/ https://www.xda-developers.com/apple-eu-dma-changes/

I scored (or so I think) a base model M3 Pro 14" MBP for $1800 on a recent sale at Best Buy. I would prefer to find something cheaper. I'm considering a refurbished M2 Pro instead that I've found for $1600 on Apple's website. I don't know if I'd be missing out on features though. I tried so many different Windows laptops, but none fit the bill with build quality, speakers, screen, and overall non-gameriness. I prefer glossy screens over matte screens ideally OLED or Mini LED, and of course 120hz+ is a preferred option. I can find plenty of performant options from the Windows side but most fall short especially with speakers. In an ideal world, I'd love to occasionally pick up an eSports title like Rocket League and play on my 3440x1440 175hz OLED, but it seems thats wishful thinking. I've kind of given up the idea of gaming just because the MacBook Pro M2/M3 Pro are such compelling options. Also, why does no one offer a haptic trackpad in 2024? Diveboard trackpads are so BAD. I would really love some recommendations of video editing laptops around the $1600 mark that might be able to game. The feel of the latop is very important to me. Windows is fine I'm just very in the Apple ecosystem. Thanks!

So unless there is a bug on the FOLDING.LAR.SYSTEMS site, I guess someone is GPU folding on an Apple silicon chip? If anyone knows what they are doing, I own an M3 Max Macbook Pro. Would be curious to try it on that.

Hi, I'm a Computer Science student, my painful journey begins when a friend told me that he had an old iMac (iMac 21.5, Mid 2010 [11,2]) that wasn't turning on and because I study this he thought I can fix it. I have to clarify that this is my first time really fixing a Mac, I used one for around a month at work, but I then changed it for a Windows one because I'm more conformable with it, so I know the bare minimum about macOs. When I just plug it in my house the PC just turned on but it was showing just a blank screen, my friend told me that he took it to a repair shop and they told him that it was a hard drive issue and that it would cost a lot. I started trying to open recovery (Command+R) but it just wouldn't open, like it was corrupted, so I opened it and take the hard drive out for testing. The guy was correct, the drive was dead, so I installed it an SSD, took a USB with High Sierra installer (last supported OS for this mac) and install it. I taught it was an easy job, spoiler, this was almost a month ago, I'm still dealing with this F iMac. When I started the OS everything looked ok, but when I test everything the PC was getting REALLY slow, it was unusable. So I checked the temps and they seem a bit high, so I thought it was a thermal issue, because this mac has more that 10 years and has never been cleaned. So I opened it again, cleaned everything, changed the thermal paste, remove the dirt of the fans, and everything. After all of this the Mac was as slow as it was before. It had no sense, the temps were ok, no CPU usage, RAM ok, an upgrade from the HDD to SSD, no dirt, fresh OS, but it was still unusable slow. After all that, I thought macOs was the problem, so I took an Ubuntu USB and installed Ubuntu. The installer was all ok, but when it booted to Ubuntu the screen was completely black, the backlight of the display was also off, it was super strange. Tried turning it on and off but nothing worked. When booting it makes the "mac sound", white screen, then completely black until you shut it down. I tough it was an Ubuntu problem, so I tried with windows 10, but exactly the same happened. After a bit of research I found that it was a problem with the dedicated AMD GPU and the drivers, so I installed macOS again (because I erased it thinking Ubuntu or Windows would work perfect), then opened the bootcamp app -> Action -> Download Drivers. I thought it was it, but no, this iMac wanted to continue ruining my life. When I selected where the drivers to download, click OK, but then an error popped up, "Can't download the software because of a network problem". The Mac is connected to ethernet and also to wifi. My internet connection is great, it also worked great on the Mac for browsing (when you could, because it keep freezing) and things downloaded fast. I couldn't find any answers on internet. The only guide I found for installing Windows on older Macs was to modify the macOS bootcamp app to enable a 3rd option that helps installing windows. I created an USB with the Windows 7 iso using bootcamp but without the "Download drivers" option, because apparently Apple servers are not working or something and it can't download them, and also created the partition. So when the process finished I rebooted, hold Alt, but the USB was not showing. I tried the same process with Windows 8.1 (I know is a horrible OS, but it was supposed to be the last officially supported Windows). To my surprise, it booted the usb and I installed it correctly (almost). Obviously, it needed drivers because audio was not working etc. So I launched Brigadier (also searched on the apple website but this was easier), and found out, after having the drivers downloaded, that the latest Bootcamp drivers for windows on this mac where for Windows 7 (BootCamp-041-84868). Tried installing them anyway but all windows crashed. Now, I'm back on macOS, it's still VERY slow, idk what to do next, because for some reason Windows 7 installer doesn't want to show up, and the UEFI version of Windows 7 needs secure boot disabled and it can't be done on this iMac. At this point I just want to throw a brick to this F machine, nothing works, and EVERY TIME i taught i found the right path it just keeps failing or having some apple things that make thing even harder (Apple being Apple). Someone, please help, I don't know what to do next, I can say that I LITERALLY TRIED EVERYTHING, and don't know what to do now. I don't want to give back to my friend his PC that's more usable as a door stoper than as an actual PC. Makes me feel like an awful technician, I brought back to life laptops with Intel Core 2 Duo that are actually working great, and this PC with an i5 can't even open facebook. Thanks.

Quotes My thoughts It’s good that Apple has been held accountable hopefully this trend continues. Concerning the payouts, I wonder how much paperwork will be necessary to receive the cash. Will a receipt of having bought the phone be needed or will Apple be asked to provide their selling data. Realistically, I think it’ll be a long form and process to actually receive the cash. Summary The Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project have announced the release of Fedora Asahi Remix 39, the new flagship Linux distribution for Apple Silicon Macs, supporting the majority of M1 and M2 Macs. Quotes My thoughts In three short years, the vast majority of Apple Silicon Macs have gone from being completely unable to run Linux to having a distribution with a polished experience that many x86 machines would love to have. It's likely to be a game-changer in the sense of raising the bar for what is expected for a high quality desktop Linux experience on every platform, and much of the work done for Fedora Asahi Remix paves the way for a much more useful desktop Linux experience on ARM with other machines in the future (such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s).
