  1. Source: Apple's Support Page and Whitepaper (FaceID_Security_Guide.pdf) via Tech Crunch It's good that Apple released a whitepaper to clarify the issue and I encourage everyone to read their support page as well as their detailed whitepaper as to how they keep Face ID secure and how they respond to Al Franken's questions so here are some key points from Appe: Basically very similar as to how Touch ID is securing fingerprint data. Touch ID is a capacitive CMOS sensor that takes a high DPI image of the fingerprint and converts it into math representation and discards the image after. The math representation is stored locally in the Secure Enclave of the A7 chip and above. Sucks for people with identical twins then but Apple didn't say that an identical twin can unlock it, it's just a lower probability. Again, this one should be tested among identical twins as I remember, even identical twins can't fool Windows Hello. As twins grow, they actually become more and more distinct. But then if you're 13 and below, your parents should just get you the regular iPhone 8 or better yet, no phone at all and focus at school. I wonder what does Apple mean by a mathematical representation? Is it just a random string of numbers and letters that are salted and hashed? They won't tell. I think they probably shouldn't. And finally, here's Apple's response to Al Franken if Face ID data is uploaded to Apple servers or not. Now this is the part that it's a little bit sketchy. Apple says that Face ID data is stored locally and encrypted so that's a plus. But then, you have the option to submit your Face ID diagnostic data as telemetry? I always commend Apple for their commitment to privacy and standing up against inserting encryption backdoors but Face ID diagnostic data? What do they mean by diagnostic data? Because I'm pretty sure my iPhone's Touch ID doesn't have diagnostic data. I hope Apple clarifies this and maybe a non-trollish forum member could clarify it. The good is that you have the option to disable Face ID telemetry and I think anyone with an iPhone X should unless Apple can do this in a very secure and private manner. I mean, macOS's telemetry is actually way less creepy than Windows 10 because they would just take diagnostic data and personal information like email addresses, usernames and passwords are filtered out before it's being sent. In fact, you can view the actual telemetry data on an iPhone and iPad which is very transparent unlike other operating systems and you can always opt out instead of asinine options of full telemetry or telemetry lite but no telemetry off.
  2. Apple AirPods - My Experience

I've had Apples's AirPods for about two weeks now, and here's how they've treated me. Why I bought the AirPods I have the iPhone 7 and obviously, no headphone jack. I find headphones to be uncomfortable and I can only wear them for about 30 minutes before having to take them off. I also listen to a lot of music, with the LightningPods, I couldn't charge and listen at the same time. Sure, I could order Beats but Apple's Ecosystem tends to work well together. Ordering I ordered mine off of BestBuy, and it was supposed to arrive on July 11th when I ordered them on June 27th. (Apple's are supposed to ship in six weeks). To my surprise, they arrived in a week. First Impressions I put them through their paces, and I ran out of charge halfway though the day. I threw them in their charging case, made lunch, and ten minutes later, they were saved from their near battery death. I was quite surprised about how fast they charged in their case. About the case, though. It's sort of, awkward to carry? It's too small to put in my bag, and I'm afraid I'll loose it in my pocket. Two weeks later They sounded good for all I care. I'm not an audiophile, I listen to music and watch YouTube, that's about all I use them for. As I said above, the actual earbuds charge very quickly. I'm able to last 4 1/2 hours, grab a snack, and I'm ready to go again. The actual case doesn't charge as quickly, but I charge it every other day when I'm using my phone. The auto-pause feature is very nice. It's convenient and quick to pause the track or video. I don't use Siri at all. I have a playlist that doesn't really make me skip any tracks, and for YouTube, I'm watching it on my phone so it's already out in my hand. For the actual size of the buds, I always put them back in the case when I'm not using them, so they're hard to loose. I also haven't had an issue of them falling out of my ears, they fit very well but it doesn't get uncomfortable. Final word I really haven't had a bad experience with the Apple AirPods. They're a great piece of tech, although fairly pretty expensive. If you're looking for wireless earbuds, you can't really go wrong if you have an iPhone.
  3. Hi forum users. I am going to build a slot loading cd player that can stream music to my Sonos speakers. I am planning to use a Raspberry Pi, and I want to use a slot loading optical drive for aesthetic reasons. The cheapest slot loading drives (including shipping to Denmark) I have been able to find is used Apple SuperDrives. So my question is if it is possible to connect an internal Apple SuperDrive to a Raspberry Pi using a slim sata to usb adapter (or an ide to usb adapter if the drive is older than 2008)?
  4. Im a HS student, and im in need of an iPad or Tablet. I normally like more Android/Windows products more than Apple`s, however there are certain apps only available on iPad (or iPad Pro), and I need them for school. Also I think that Ill go iPad Pro because it really doesnt have competitors in specs (unlike iPhones, long live Google and Samsung). However before buying the 10.5 inch iPad Pro (the 12.9 inch is huge, if I need something that big, ill probably need a Mouse, keyboard and desktop/laptop grade programs) I have some questions. The 10.5 inch iPad Pro and its 12.9 counterpart both claim to have a 120Hz Refresh Rate, but quoting Linus in his refresh rate Techquickie, most panels are really 60Hz Panels with Backlight Strobing or other trickeries. So is the iPad Pros 120Hz refresh rate real or is it BS? Also since it has a resolution superior to 1080p (FHD) but inferior to 1440p (QHD) can you select in YouTube 1440p for a slightly better resolution in Video and some Interpolation (AA)?

  6. Simply said, I was always in a believe that differences between i3 - i5 - i7 series is mainly based on number of threads and cache. But down below, there are two options of Macbook Pro CPUs one i5 the other i7, but according to information I found the difference is only in clock speed. It comes to me that i5 is quite a bargain then and very good option (considering it is $300 cheaper) and only lacking 0.2 GHz base clock speed and 0.4 GHz Turbo, while maintaining same cache, threads, cores count and hyper-threading. What do you think guys? Am I correct? A.) i5 - 2.3 GHz / Turbo 3.6 GHz (should be Intel Core i5-7360U) B.) i7 - 2.5 GHz / Turbo 4 GHz (should be Intel Core i7-7660U) + $300 Both options should feature the same features: 2 cores, 4 threads, hyper-threading, 4mb cache.
  7. At least on my system (2016 256GB nTB MBP) if you drag any file from the downloads shortcut in the Dock into a folder in iCloud Drive in Finder that folder will glitch out and cause graphical artifacts in that folder specifically. If you leave the folder Finder will behave normally or at least appear to. The solution seems to be to cmd+z to undo the file movement (does not always work) but restoring the folder from TimeMachine always works. Just something I noticed. Otherwise High Sierra seems mostly pretty stable. The issue does not appear to be present when using list view, only thumbnail view. The issue also does not appear to be present outside of iCloud Drive folders. Would be interested to see if this happens to anyone else.
  8. Hello people, I have done the unthinkable. Talk about a MacBook on a pc website! Anyways, so I was watch the new WAN show and my laptop was charging on my desk, then my dog trips over the cable, pulling my mac off of my desk while I was enjoying content . I pick up the laptop from it's like 3 foot drop onto carpet, only to see that the LCD was cracked, and the aluminum on the display was heavily bent. So my question for people is, where can I find some good replacement screens so I can DIY, and what should I get, oem (probably used on eBay) or 3rd party, and if I get the 3rd party, what quality things do I lose out on and other things? anyways, I will love anyone who can tell me this information. Thank you!

  10. So if anyone was following the stock market, especially Apple or Google Stocks today, they may have noticed a brief bit of interest between 9:30 and 9:40 (at least on the Apple stock). Apparently someone at Dow Jones Newswire may have accidentally hit the publish button on an article that was a test bit for their internal system. This test article was that Google was going to buy Apple for $9 billion as a part of Steve Jobs will. The interesting question that comes out from this is whether the brief jump and subsequent drop of Apple stock by (admittedly fraction of a percent) between 9:30 and 10:20 before it normalized is in relation to this and computer stock trading. CNBC Article: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/10/dow-jones-posts-fake-headlines-claiming-google-to-buy-apple.html Ars Tech Article: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/10/dow-jones-posts-fake-story-claiming-google-was-buying-apple/ This makes for a really fun read, however it does bring up whether computer stock traders can be sophisticated enough to tell a fake news article from a real one as well as what the economic implications of these kind of issues... Apple's stock appears to have normalized within a half hour yet that may not always be the case. Any economists in the crowd want to take a stab? Note: If mods don't feel this is news-worthy, they can move it. Just thought it was an interesting bit of Tech SNAFU with potential implications...
  11. Source: Futuremark via ZDNet Tests are based from 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme Graphics test for both iOS and Android. So what causes the alleged performance degradation? Futuremark says that: I would say that my iPad Air from 2013 doesn't run as smooth as before with iOS 7. But it only shows that it's more of a hardware issue rather than the common conspiracy theory that Apple is throttling performance. I attest though that iOS 11 is perhaps the buggiest iOS release just yet and I hated it more than iOS 7 when it was released. A lot of these older devices especially the iPhone 5s and the iPad Air only have a paltry 1 GB of RAM and it only shows that iOS has became more and more beefier as years go by not to mention a lot of these older devices start at 16 GB as base model. But then Apple is known for keeping devices updated, something that a lot of Android OEMs can't touch. But most of the performance penalties on older iPhones is because of iOS bugs especially iOS 11.0.2.
  12. I got Juiced Systems BizHUB dongle. If I remove the pass through charging cable, connected devices are disconnected and reconnected with a warning 'Device not ejected properly'. Why is that ?
  13. @LinusTechshould make a review of the Apple Watch S3 with LTE. I know Linus has been using the original apple watch since its release and i would love to see a comparison between the S0 and S3. The apple watch S3 is probably the most substantial upgrade since the original. Please make our dreams come true by making a review!
  14. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/technology/uber-app-can-silently-record-iphone-screens-security-researcher-finds/news-story/03b82b166173735d9491ef67f9fd7c05 This is very concerning for all users, and why do they need for connecting to an Apple Watch. Scary stuff Apple. I wouldn't want any app to be able to data dump the contents of my screen and that's what it seems to be able to do. I don't want UBER to know everything that I do on a phone they only need to know where you are, where you want to go or in the case of a driver where to pick up someone. It shouldn't have access to phone lists call times messages facebook and every other app on your phone but it seems they have that now.
  15. Hello everyone, Though I've been following Techquickie & LinusTechTips for a long time, this is actually my first post in LTT forum. I received the Juiced Systems BizHUB 2 days ago and I've been testing things. I checked things like data transfer speed, ethernet speed, HDMI connection quality etc. These are fine but something else is wrong. I was charging my macbook pro 2017 entry TB 13" via the pass-through charging port just to check if it works. And it does. Then I plugged in some UBS devices - a thumb drive and an 500G external hdd(no external power) - it also worked. But when I removed the pass through charging, all the connected devices disconnected and re-connected after couple of seconds and macOS warned me that 'Device not ejected properly'. Just to be sure I checked it about dozen time and every time this happens. Also when I'm not using the pass-through charging cable and a 3TB external hdd(with external power) is connected - if I connect the 500G external hdd(no external power) it disconnects the 3TB HDD and other devices if connected. I've concluded that if the hub goes through sudden changes in the amount of available distributing power(?), it disconnects all attached devices. I've made a purchase decision based on this video: In the video there is no mention of problems of this sort. If anyone can inform if this is an intended behaviour or if this is a fault in the unit it would be appreciated. It cost 135$ to purchase and get it shipped to India. I need to know whether I should keep it or return for refund. Thanks.
  16. Source : https://www.notebookcheck.com/Apple-iPhone-8-hat-Probleme-mit-kabellosem-Laden.257490.0.html Source English : https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.notebookcheck.com%2FApple-iPhone-8-hat-Probleme-mit-kabellosem-Laden.257490.0.html&edit-text=&act=url Note : Google Translate was used so grammar may not be up to par. Apple's latest iPhone launched a few weeks ago with a variety of new features, including wireless charging. Wireless charging was supposed to make charging your new iPhone 8 more convenient by removing the need to plug the phone in. Although Apple uses the Qi standard which has been in existance since 2008 the iPhone 8 models seem to have multiple issues while charging wirelessly. To begin with the convinience of wireless charging comes from the ability to simply place the phone on the charging pad without thought, however multiple users have reported that wireless charging will stop functioning correctly if moved even slightly. This movement sensibility seems to be so great that the vibration of a notification can cause charging to cease. Apple has responded with the recommendation to disable the vibration alarm when placing the phone on the charging pad: Additionally the phones seem to generate an excessive amount of heat when charging wirelessly, so much that charging is halted until the phone cools down again. This may be a feature to prolong the lifetime of the battery , however I haven't heard of reports from other companies with similar issues. A new iPhone, a new set of issues. This isn't anything groundbreaking, any product which sells tens of millions of units in less than a month will have problems which slip through QA. As far as I know Samsung has been able to develop a wireless charging method which functions even if notifications arrive, given that Apple took a technology which has been developed for almost 10 years I would have expected them to at least have this working.
  17. Hi All I have discovered recently that iTunes is storing all of my iPhone backups to AppData and as a result it is taking up 200GB of my hard drive. Is there a way that I can move the location where iTunes saves these backups? Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day!
  18. So apparently there is a slight bug in the Disk Utility app in High Sierra that if the proper steps are taken, can result in your password to be shown as a plain text file if you had the "hint" option enabled on your Mac. Apparently as long as your don't have that hint feature enabled you are fine. I guess this is affects people who leave their machines out for a while for people to try to get into them and It could also affect alone who simply gets their machine stolen and have not disabled the password hint at the login screen. It would seem that while I have had good experiences so far with macOS High Sierra that some users are reporting some bugs and now with this I guess there are some legitimate issues with the OS (just like any software release ever) I feel like Apple loosened the reins on its developers for this season of software releases. iOS 11 is a mess and a small number of older Mac users are having issues with High Sierra. I don't like it when macOS isn't "just working" since thats why I got a 2016 MacBook Pro. I need that reliability. Now there is this that needs to be patched. Luckily its a bug in this app and not something deeper that would require a while to fix. A patch should be out soon (probably a few days) if I know Apple. 19. https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/5/16428570/google-pixel-2-no-headphone-jack-apple-wireless-future "We might not like it, but Apple’s prediction that we could live without headphone jacks is proving correct" I am going ahead and saying it right now, I love my headphone jack but I think that this article brings up a few good points, and the future will probably be wireless. Having a headphone is a great feature but companies are providing really good wireless headphones and dongles as well. The simple fact is that technology advances, and during stages of transition there may be minor inconveniences. It happened with floppy disks, and parallel printer ports, and optical drives… but when people decide to stop being upset about it, they actually realize that things are better because we went through the transition, and they are happy again. It’s a cycle that has repeated over and over, which is why it amazes me that people get so outraged over it. That doesn't meant there aren't problems with removing the jack completely, bluetooth can not at this time provide as superior audio quality. Dongles are ofter of crappy quality and can be lost easily. But these companies believe that this is the future. What is the future? What do you guys think? "At first blush, this seems like a flimsy excuse when you look at the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG V30, both gorgeous, almost bezel-less phones with headphone jacks present. But extend the timeline beyond this year or the next, think about it in the context of a world where even more internal phone components are integrated or obviated. As phones have been shrinking, the proportion of internal space that the headphone jack commands inside them (and not just the jack itself, there’s also the audio amplifier and digital-to-analog converter circuitry to consider) has been growing. If we’re just talking about the near term, I’m unconvinced by Apple and Google’s arguments that the jack had to go to make room for better, more integrated design. However, over the long run, these companies are probably right."
  20. Pros Made in 2007, but has aged extremely well (looks modern) Available for $25-35 on eBay (great bargain) Dense metal body, but also very lightweight for portability. Smooth white matte-like bottom makes it comfortable to carry. Beautiful clean silver and white aesthetic. Keys are firm, easy to press and offer tactile feedback. Keys are not a dust or fingerprint magnet. Very thin, with the 2x AA batteries slot to elevate it. Has the lowest possible width and length a functional keyboard can have. Connects to Windows via Bluetooth very easily. Looks as good in real life as in the picture (unlike many keyboards). Cons No USB ports (can't access BIOS with it) Don't pay full retail price. No backlighting (which is not a big deal) Took me a while to figure out I needed a coin to open the batteries slot. Overall Obviously, this is not for people who want a mechanical or full-sized keyboard (for competitive gaming or certain professional applications), but it wouldn't be fair to judge this product by that standard. For consumers who want a very small form factor and portable keyboard with excellent build quality all around at an affordable price, this is an excellent product and strongly recommended. Rating: 9/10
  21. Imac for fun

I want to get a relatively recent Apple computer to try out the Operating system(and im a sucker for there design). I was thinking of either getting a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini, IMac, or Macbook that can run El Captian or Siera. Can anyone who uses these machines tell me if these older machines can still use the newer OSes relatively smoothly, not looking to render or edit so power isnt really my aim.
  22. So apparently what Apple is doing with FaceID is actually very promising. I feel the demo that had a rough showing due to the iPhone X coming out of a fresh reboot but the later demos showed that it worked pretty reliably. Apple puts a lot of time and effort into their R&D and it really shows, regardless of how you view the company. In this year alone the A11 and FaceID are shaking things up quite a bit. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the industry picks up on what Apple is doing. TouchID popularized fingerprint passcodes and now we all have that on our phones....well....not the iPhone X . Source: http://pocketnow.com/2017/10/02/samsung-face-id-apple-kgi-why
  23. https://opensource.apple.com/ https://news.hitb.org/content/macos-and-ios-kernel-source-code-now-available-github As seen here Apple has released all the kernels of iOS and macOS. This is probably only a good thing, especially for the jailbreak community (although I guess that is bad for Apple). A recent jailbreak has not been out for a long time. Having easier access may influence more teams to find vulnerabilities in the code. This also has the capacity to turn in the favor of Apple if more security firms try to take a stab at iOS and report or "expose" any exploits or vulnerabilities. As stated, this could or could not affect the company in any meaningful way, only time will tell!
