buy? Laptop Build good for Gaming/Animating
BenCosmos posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hello there! I'm here again to ask a quick question. I'm thinking about buying a laptop for filming/animating. The reason I'm asking for gaming in the title is because I plan on using Unreal Engine (and some gaming) with this laptop. Additionally it would be great to use Blender and video editing software on it. I would like this to be as powerful as possible but under $3k if possibly. Thank you for your time, Ben -
Hey guys, Purpose of this thread: Build a high end Cinema4D/Octane/X-Partices animation system capable of single machine rendering/particle caching as fast as possible. Budget: Open. Range is $3000-$10,000, can go higher if price to performance is justified. Region: USA, Milwaukee Wisconsin. Airflow and Overclock: Air cooled only, no water and no overclocking due to IT department constraints. Learn about near future hardware and how I might want to wait rather than build one now. I make stuff like this (one of my projects): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMCfZL9HgSk I do these solo and they take me forever both on the "I don't know what I'm doing front," and on the rendering/caching front. My manager might be asking if I need to upgrade my system and/or software sometime in the next 12 months. The problem is, I don't know a lot about what hardware (and to some extent, software) I need, or if newer hardware is even worth it. My current hardware: OS: Windows 64bit CPU: Intel i7-6900K @ 3.2 GHz RAM: 128GB SSD: M2 EVO 970 2TB GPU1: Nvidia Quadro M5000 GPU2: Nvidia Quadro M5000 GPU3: Nvidia GTX 1080 My current software: Cinema4D R19 PolyTrans64 PolyTrans64 PTC Granite X-Particles 4 Octane Premiere Pro CC After Effects CC Photoshop CC For research, I recently watched two of LTT's videos on this topic: https://youtu.be/G-90qEJAVkU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EcMKg7awXg Key takeaways: Video 1: Granted, the focus of the first video is all about CAD software (I do not use CAD software), it looks like the Quadro's do a great job at performance over the gaming cards. Nothing modern for me to look at that I've seen though as far as comparisons go. Nvidia's website has over a dozen cards to choose from. Plus, with me likely coming into this next year and with Nvidia's 3000 lineup coming, unsure what I ultimately should be focused on. Video 1: Graphic's cards in SLI in programs such as Solidworks (as shown in first video) does not benefit. That being said, Octane in Cinema4D does use all the cards. However, I am unsure if X-Particles does and this is a very important piece of my workflow. This first video from 2018 lands @ the P6000 for best single card performance. Video 1: Linus says in the first video single core performance is king, but again, focus on that video is CAD software (eg softworks) as opposed to animation software (eg Cinema4D) and I am unsure if that is what I should be focused on. He mentions the core count is important when it comes to rendering, which is important for me because my renders sometimes take 36 hours for a 20 second animation - would really like to get that under 12. Video 2: Looks like the RTX 8000 is what I'd be looking for if I purchased one today. My current workflow is as follows: I am asked by a member of specific departmental management team to animate a particular product we have. I reach out to an engineer in the respective department to provide me the CAD file. They use a program called CREO or ProEngineer. They typically provide those to me in STP file-types. I import those STP files into a program called "PolyTrans64" using their "PTC Granite" Plugin to convert them to .C4D files with a 0.060 quality ratio. Typical assembly count can reach as high as 1800 and the converted C4D files can reach 1.8GB. I do not know if this is the best approach, because the wireframes look like a mess, but the final product often looks nice. See image: (Octane Renderer). I then spend forever organizing the 1,800 objects into null folders, then texturing those objects using textures downloaded from Polligon (because I'll never understand texture creation myself). I then have the managers write me a script, I put it into a script template, and I get to work on animating fluids/gasses/explosions first, then mechanical movements, then render drafts. Frankly as an aside if anyones good at these programs/plugins and are available for private tutoring sessions, please email me @ Smith.Brandon@basco.com. TLDR: I am looking for a high end animation system in Cinema4D/Octane/X-Particles that renders faster, caches faster, and performs better when viewing 2,000 part animation files while simultaneously running ~5,000 particles within the program, and this system will be purchased sometime in the next 12 months and could use your advice. Thanks guys.

Hi there, I don't know if this was already covered (either by Linus or on the forum) but can someone recommend a really good CPU (Intel) for 3d modelling and animating performance? Not for CAD, but for using Blender, 3dMax or Maya. Thanks Wintoons

parts Is this PC good enough for gaming and animating?
godsun posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hey guys! So I'm planning on building a PC, so I can animate and game, probably record gameplay too. My budget is not very tight, although, if I can lower the price more, it would be great. So here are the specs: Motherboard Asus z170 pro gaming Processor Intel I7 6700k Graphics card Asus 1080 Strix power supply Corsair RM850x CPU cooler CM 212 evo Ram 16gb Kingston HyperX Fury 2400mhz Storage Samsung 850 evo basic 1tb (the most popular) case Fractal Desigh Define r5 I'm not entirely sure about the processor, it's a beast, but it's only got 4 cores and 8 threads. Might be a problem for rendering. I also chose the expensive gtx1080, so it will take longer before I need to upgrade again. Tell me what you guys think, I would really appreciate help with this build! -
Hey! I thought I would ask here, since I'm kind of out of the loop on this stuff and I'm trying to do something new. I'm a digital artist so far, not professional or anything, just hobby, and after seeing people on youtube animate, I kind of want to do that too. I tried Adobe programs, however, that was really confusing and I have no basis in it, so completely lost at what anything is or how to do anything. Is there some animating programs that are a bit simpler for animating sakes? Mostly hobby and to start at something and eventually grow and get better at it. thanks for your time!

So awhile back I asked for input on my parts list, after going through multiple people's suggestions I settled on one that would cost around $2700. Fast forward a few months. The PC that I've been using for over a year has died from what I believe to be an overheating power supply caused from my dying fans. Rather than putting more money into a lost cause I was wanting to speed up the purchasing process of this build by going for cheaper parts. This is the current part list that I have Keep in mind I've already purchased the case and the motherboard I'm not purchasing the monitor right away so that takes off about another $400. Everything else like the GPU, HDD, SSD, etc I was looking to make cheaper but still good enough for my usage purposes I would be using this computer for -Gaming -Animating -Graphic Design -Content Creation -Streaming -Overall work (school documents, essays, etc) Let me know if anything is unclear or you have questions, thanks for taking the time to even look at this.

Hey so I recently did a post on what graphics card is the best for animating with SFM with higher than 60fps and gaming on high or ultra60 fps (tf2 cs:go battlefield witcher 3 gta5 and thanks for the responses people have told be to get this power supply and this ram so here is my questain people have told me a 2gb r9 380 is better than a 4g r9 280and a 750ti would be bad since the r9s. Have twice the shading cores so I did that and I got a 6core 3.5ghz AMD FX might overclock and. A couple other things must can people hel me out on this I'm getting part today I'm on a budget of $850 AUd so eBay could happen but I would prefer pcpartpicker so here is the list so far:http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/Pkzg99 AUD please cu I'm an Aussie gamer Thanks

Challenge:- How cheap can you pick up these parts?
xvantok posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
My challenge: how cheap can you find all the below parts? (2nd Hand/refurb/sale/etc accepted) More rules and details below Soooo I don't have a huge amount of money to pick up my planned PC and the situation just turned critical as my laptop just died after 5 years of loyal service and I'm am reduced to my iPad... This was my planned build when buying new parts as I figured I had some more. Time to save up me moneys, but I don't so here we are: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£180.99 @ Amazon UK) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£41.99) Memory: Avexir Core series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£49.99) Storage: Sandisk Solid State Drive 64GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£33.54 @ Aria PC) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£37.99 @ Aria PC) Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280 3GB TWIN FROZR Video Card (£146.99 @ Novatech) Case: Corsair Graphite Series 230T Orange ATX Mid Tower Case (£57.50 @ Aria PC) Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£38.87 @ Scan.co.uk) Total: £587.86 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-03-02 00:11 GMT+0000 The motherboard is sourced from here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-347-GI&groupid=595&catid=689 And the RAM is sourced from here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-078-AR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517 And I also have a buddy with a windows 7 disk and if that fails I'll grab the windows 10 technical release. Soooo, I need a relatively good CPU for 3D work/animating/rendering, video editing and Photoshop, etc. I need a relatively good, wallet-friendly, graphics card so to play most games at 1080p high settings. 8 Gigs of RAM is standard but doesn't have to be avexir, but must not just be a PCB. I would ideally have an SSD but that is not extremely nessascary and I need 1TB of storage for general work etc. I want a relatively reliable PSU cause it pays off in the long run and the efficiency rating will hopefully keep some components last slightly longer. However this is a wee bit (significantly) over what I have at the moment, so.... I live in the UK which has less 2nd tech shops, etc but I was wondering what discount/refurbed/2nd parts you can to drop the budget that are equivalent or better than the ones listed, without a good reason. Also has anyone else bought a b grade overclockers UK item? Are they reliable? And what do you think of the parts? Good luck -

Designing, video editing, modelling, animating, the lot. No gaming. EDIT: OK enough of the fuss with the GPU. This is a compromise. I use AE and Illustrator above Maya, and therefore got a build more specialised for that purpose. This is to be upgraded. GPU first. Maybe to a K2200. I'm sorry for being stubborn and not listening to what is still a valid point. I really apologise. Alright? All good?

Budget & Location: $1500 (give or take around $50); Dubai (However any US retailer is fine) Aim: 3D Modelling/Animation in various 3D software. Will also use AE and Premiere. Some Photoshop and Illustrator. Will not be gaming at all. Monitors: Not needed. Peripherals: Only the G502 mouse is required. No OS required. Why am I upgrading? Because my laptop is failing to render my hard work. Help would be much very appreciated.
