Hey all, I recently received a bought Gigabyte RX 460 Windforce 2GB for my HTPC. I wanted it to handle some gaming loads, but also to handle 4K 60FPS for watching movies and web browsing. I have a Vizio 4K home theater display that has 1 HDMI 2.0 port. However, when I set my screen resolution to 1440p or 4K and set refresh rate to 60FPS and do what I want to do, after about 10 minutes the screen will go full screen black, then full screen green, then full screen gray-ish bars for a total of about 5 seconds, then resume to whatever it was displaying before. It doesn't matter if I'm gaming at 4K on a lighter title like Pro Evolution Soccer or just sitting idly on desktop. I'll be playing a game or just browsing the web, that the display issue hits. I don't get any notifications from Windows that the driver crashed. The GPU fans are spinning and GPU temps are hovering around 30c, according to MSI Afterburner. These screen issues don't happen at all on 1080p. I've changed out the HDMI cable and re-seated the GPU. I've removed and reinstalled the drivers a few times, switching between letting Windows get the drivers and just going to the AMD site itself. I'd swap the graphics card, but I don't have another convenient card to drop into it. I'd put my GTX 970 in there, but the power supply doesn't have enough 6-pin connectors to make it work. When looking through the AMD software information, I found an intriguing piece of information that, I'm thinking, is related to the source of my problems. The current PCIe bus settings are currently, "PCI Express 2.0 x4", even though the motherboard is rated at PCIe 2.0 x16. The system was originally put together out of pure curiosity and the fact MicroCenter had the motherboards on sale for $0.01 if I bought a compatible CPU. I couldn't find any options in the BIOS that affect the speed of the PCIe lane. The only thing I found was setting PCIe or Onboard display as the primary display, which is currently set to PCIe Could the PCIe lane be my issue? What do you guys think is the best processor for the AM1 platform?

Hi all! I have been planning to build a JBOD NAS or file server for me and my dorm mates. It will mostly contain media files and we have this really old LGA 1366 based rig, but I am not sure I would want to fire that thing up 24/7. The alternative, though, is that I would buy a new CPU/MOBO, the AMD Kabini-based Sempron 3850, and an ASrock AM1B-ITX motherboard. I would likely be buying parts tonight, as I want the build to be here on friday. And if its something to consider, Electricity is not really expensive here, so my concern is more of a heat/safety issue on running an old machine 24/7. Also, I would start with one new 3TB HDD first, and add some more later on. Long story short, should I buy a new, cheap build and have a low power, cool system? Or reuse what I have now and save about 80usd on parts?

I've heard a rumor that some AM1 boards support registered ECC. I've also read statements that say it only supports unregistered and one article that says am1 is incapable of ECC even if the processor is. I've been unable to confirm anything with a secondary source so I was hoping someone here definitively knew one way or the other. I've also been looking at avoton and atom SOC options and I'm generally looking for relatively small and cheap options that might support registered ECC. I understand the details and that I can function just as well without it, and if it comes down to it and there are no such options that's likely what I'll do. I do however happen to have 32gb just laying around and I thought I might put it to good use. my original budget was 650$ before drives and I'm hoping to bring that under 400$ before drives. I was thinking maybe a 400w fanless seasonic platinum psu at first now I'm thinking that's overkill at the price point so I'm open to suggestions and alternatives. I know that I can probably build a super cheap am1 at around 150$ (contingent on ECC) but while I'd like to keep this cheap as possible I'd also like it to be in a case. I estimate I'll be using 6 x 5tb drives, 2 of which would be for backup, and I probably have a SAS card or raid card in with my spare parts if I need it. I don't expect any build guides or logs, I can do the leg work and due dilligence on everything, though I hope the extra details pre-emptively answer expected questions. I really just need clarification on cheap motherboards that support ECC if any, or if I'd save money avoiding it considering the price of compatability. edit: Wanted to add purpose is mostly for transcoding, non-time sensitive and not particularly data sensitive but who ever wants to lose data right?

I am looking into the lowest power consumption and low cost , just for some java, .net development, currently on a 9850BE generates too much heat and drinks power and doesnt perform as well. looking into the comparisions it would be 80 % the performance I get at 20% of the power. just would there be any upgradability ? I am looking at an AMD athlon 5350 with a ECS KAM1-I with a single 8GB ram stick 25+15?+3W instead of 250+ W when with the 9850BE

i've been looking around for a while now, and i haven't found anything third party. perhaps a ghetto rig solution? would a am2/am3(+) cooler work? i have and evga hadron air, so i'd need something like a noctua nhl19a.

Hey! I have huge difficulties when installing the AM1 Athlon cpu cooler, it just wont work. I've aligned the two little "buttons" with the holes, but I cant get them through the holes. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

everybody seems to be hating on the relatively new am1 cpu's saying that they are terribly bad etc.. MW Technology has videos proving that they can be good for certain gaming rigs. Whats your thoughts? Videos here:

i got build few computers for a customer and i was buying fm2 asus always but the provider does not have more of those and they offer me asus AM1 . computers are going to use ssd 120gb kingston and 4gb ram, for excel , word, email usage. what is the best of those plataforms and what are the difference?

Is the new AMD Athlon 5350 with a SSD good enough for steam in home streaming at 1080p 40fps+? AMD is introducing its AM1 platform anchored around its socketed "Kabini" APU architecture. AM1 comes to life in the form of the quad-core Athlon and Sempron APUs. AMD is targeting the low-cost, PC-like device sector in regions like Latin America, South East Asia and EMEA, at least to start. The tagline here is "everyday PC use at extremely low costs," and in an upgradable platform to boot. Hi guys, I'm new to this so if you could bare with me it would be appreciated! I'm planning to do a HTPC build on a tight budget. I'm not intending to play any games on it, have all my films ripped to external HDD and wanted to build a media centre build which I can leave attached to my tv rather than having to swap HDMI inputs from my Macbook, my main rig and Xbox and blu-ray player. I'm also keen to use the new AM1 platform largely due to its low price and 25w TDP meaning I can leave it on without the guilt. My proposed parts list consists of: Processor : Athlon 5350 2.05ghzI figured due to the low price difference of these chips I might as well aim for the top. Motherboard : ASROCK AM1H-ITXI want this motherboard for a number of reasons.First, I wanted the m-itx form-factor in order to make sure there was room for a 120mm fan inside the case. I was also drawn to this board due to its superior connectivity, with mini-pcie which would allow me to keep my wireless on the board, and also the extra controllers allocated to USB3 (not really vital for me) but more importantly the Sata options, which allows me to reuse this board for a server purpose in the future. The power supply option was probably the biggest selling point for this board as I wanted to keep the system as quiet as possible, and the lack of an ATX power supply will certainly help! It also still gives the option for an ATX power supply so that's still a possibility in the future. Also important was the audio capabilities, with the optical audio-out being important in my media cabinet. The same goes for the video out options with HDMI being an obvious necessity. PSU : 19v DC Power Supply [Not Yet Found] Case : Novatech Media CaseI chose this case because it was relatively cheap, enabled a full size optical drive and would look good under my tv, quite important right?
