  1. So i saw this video that linus made. Blocking ads with a "server/router(?)" My question: I have a spare PC thats not doing anything. Is it possible to create something like this on windows? Or do i have to use linux? Ive never used linux so i have no clue how to set it up.
  2. Hiya everyone, I'm a noob and in need to block a couple ads on this site: https://mangaseeonline.us/read-online/Isekai-De-Skill-Wo-Kaitai-Shitara-Cheat-chapter-22-page-1.html I want to block the 4 ad img but if i used ABP or ad blocker, and attempt to 'block an ad; either the img can not be selected, or when I select the nav container, all of the container is removed, ad + nav+ chapter selection. I was trying to read APB's cheat sheets and guides to manually add filters but I don't really get this https://help.eyeo.com/en/adblockplus/how-to-write-filters https://adblockplus.org/filter-cheatsheet#blocking3 I don't know the code to either remove the nav ad, or the script that this ad is using. If anyone can help that would be great!
  3. I didn't start watching YouTube regularly until a few years ago and it took me a little bit before I realized my ad blocker was keeping me from seeing ads. I use Chrome with AdBlock as my normal browser. I will white-list sites I visit regularly if the ads aren't too obnoxious. Increasingly, sites are requiring you to white-list or disable ad blockers if you want their content. That's fair. They have a right to make their content available on whatever terms they like. There is at least one site I white-listed I hardly ever visit anymore because the ads are so intrusive. If I follow a link somewhere and am told I need to white-list, I don't. I copy the URL and paste it into Edge. I don't have an ad blocker on Edge and don't use it for anything else, though Windows likes to open it from time to time. I signed up for Floatplane because I want to support LMG. I rarely watch videos there though because I figure even without ad sense revenue because of my ad blocker, LMG benefits from the click, video watching, and thumbs up rating. I am not generally bothered by the baked in sponsorships. But I am curious. If I disabled Ad Block and let YouTube serve me ads, LMG (and other channels I watch) will earn some fractions of a cent. How does that compare to what LMG would earn if I was a YouTube premium subscriber? The one thing I am not going to do is sit through YouTube ads on a regular basis. I don't normally watch YouTube on mobile devices. But my 2 year old nephew visits and we'll put PJ Masks on the TV via the YouTube app. He throws a tantrum when we don't skip an ad fast enough (kids these days are so spoiled). I am a bit more patient than he is, but I still don't like them. But I am going to be traveling in July so I am going to sign up for premium for at least a month. My question is how much would it help LMG and other creators if I keep it after I return?
  4. Sup LTT! So I created a short video tutorial (9 minutes in runtime) covering the installation of Pi-hole in the Windows operating systems via Hyper-V & using Debian Linux. This provides network wide ad-blocking as well enhanced security via DNS redirection, completely for free. You gotta keep in mind this works across your entire network; so phones, tablets, gaming consoles, smart televisions, etc. all benefit from this. It also has a pretty sweet web based GUI that you can use for blacklisting domains, looking up queries, checking on your clients, etc. Can make network management much easier depending on what type of setup you might be using. I tried to be as straight forward as possible & also put study aids on the screen throughout the process so that you don't have to try to see the tiny text I'm typing in as it's happening. This is not a process you should fear & is extremely easy to do, it delights me to be able to show off the ease of install inside nine minutes. Though I looked up the community guidelines and they specifically say I can't post this video I've made without; "2 - The video is only to complement your complete, written post on the site. You cannot simply post a video." So I'll include a bit of a write up as well to appease the mod gods! (or just Luke, I'm doing this to appease Luke) Now my default forum of choice on the net has been ArsTechnica for the last 18 years, so yes, you're going to see this posted over there too. I'm trying to share the love. Anyways back on topic, basically what we're doing here is opening up a hyper-v environment so you can run a copy of linux on top of your windows operation system. Why? So we can install Pi-hole which blocks over 100,000 ad-serving domains through a DNS redirect on your network. This has the included benefits of improving your network performance (since ads are blocked before they are downloaded altogether) & reducing your data usage if you happen to be on a bandwidth cap. To start you'll need an operating system capable of Hyper-V. Wikipedia has a beautiful list of all the supported operating systems, so check if yours is on there. If so you can do this! If you can have it but don't have it installed, you'll need to go into your Control Panel, then to Add/Remove Programs. In modern windows versions this is called Programs and Features. From there, inside the new window that pops up, on the left side will be an option to "Turn Windows Features On or Off", this is where you need to go to install Hyper-V. Simply check the box next to it in the new window that pops up & follow the install prompts. Next on our journey you'll need the newest version of the Debian Linux distro. (make sure to download the appropriate version for the machine you're running on, for example, a modern computer will require the amd64 iso) Why do we need this? Because Pi-hole was originally meant to be booted on top a Raspberry-Pi and it's grown from there. Here we don't require a Raspberry-Pi, anything that requires money, or even physical objects beyond what we already own. So now that we have Hyper-V installed & a fresh copy of Debian we begin. As shown in the video, you'll need to create a virtual switch first. This is very simple, just click the switch manager on the right & create a new one. Make sure to select your adapter that is currently supplying your internet connection. With that done we can simply create a new virtual machine, you really do not need beef settings to make this happen. It can be done on 1GB of ram & a single processor though like anything, it will benefit the more you open it up. In the video I gave the virtual machine 4GB of ram & 10GB of hard drive space, THIS WAS PLENTY. Make sure to select the Debian iso to be inside your virtual dvd drive when the machine is turned on. It's just like any other operating system install just much easier & faster. Once this is done we need to install Curl so that we can then install Pi-hole, we also need to make sure the machine is now on a static IP so that the other devices on the network always know where their DNS server is. I've actually put this on the screen in the video but if you're interested in reading it, the basic command process to this is: su root apt-get install curl nano /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.10.95 (your pi-hole static ip) netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.10.1 (your gateway) reboot su root curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash pihole -a -p newpassword set router manual DNS settings primary = 192.168.10.95 (your pi-hole static ip) secondary = 8.8.8.8 (emergency google backup) apply & push router changes across network connect to 192.168.10.95/admin (use pi-hole ip) As discussed in the video you're going to want to comment out the last two lines of "/etc/network/interfaces" before writing in your new static address. You're also going to want to select a static address that is outside of your DHCP lease range so that it doesn't accidentally get leased to another device if your Hyper-V happens to go down. Next as seen in the instructions above, we need to go into your actual router & change your DNS settings to point to the new Pi-hole installation. This will be your Primary DNS for your Secondary DNS we're going to use Google's primary server. Why? This is for emergency backup! If your hyper-v goes offline, you forget about it, or say, the machine it's running on is shut off altogether then your network will default to google instead of just going offline. Unfortunately there won't be any ad-blocking going on at that point but that's far better then everybody on your network being upset that there's no internet access. After this all we have to do is connect to the Pi-hole web interface via any browser. Just point your address bar at the static IP your Pi-hole is running on, drop a /admin after it & login. You don't really need to do this, there's not many reasons to come over and manage the software. Mainly it's where you can investigate all the clients on your network, see problem areas, blacklist them, or even whitelist domains if you need to. You can see device temps here, charts, graphs, hella logs, you name it. It's a very simple but powerful interface that works extremely well. At the end of the video, after recording live, you can see it's running on only 700mb of memory. It really takes absolutely nothing to run Pi-hole an it has massive benefits for everything inside your network. That's why I wanted to share it with everybody! Anyways if you have any questions feel free to post though I am not associated with the project at all. I've posted this same video on their subreddit though if you happen to want to drop an upboat for me. (it would be appreciated!) I'm sure they would be much more qualified at answering in-depth technical questions then myself, though I will try my best to help out where I can. If still interested you can view the video tutorial on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgUZ9fccBCU Much love, 'Gobby PS: Here you go Luke, that'll keep things interesting.
  5. I hardly ever post on the forum, but I wanted to share this: I was watching some YouTube today in Chrome on my PC and noticed that the YouTube player broke when I tried to watch a Saturday Night Live clip. Audio would play, but no video would play, and I couldn't click on the player to start/stop like normal. I tried refreshing, but that didn't help. I tried opening another SNL video, but it still didn't play. I opened a video from another YouTuber and it played just fine. Back to SNL videos, and it broke again. I opened Firefox and tried to watch an SNL video and it worked! I was confused, but shrugged and went on watching. Then a pre-roll ad showed on the next SNL video and I realized that I had AdBlock turned off for YouTube in Firefox. I re-enabled AdBlock, and what do you know, the SNL video YouTube player broke in Firefox in the same way as it did in Chrome. Brainblast. I had figured it out. I went to Chrome and disabled AdBlock, and poof, the video worked again. TL;DR: SNL YouTube videos only display on my PC when AdBlock is disabled in Chrome/Firefox. Does anybody know what's going on? Does this happen the same way for everyone else? This seems super shady.
  6. My website (https://www.jdk319.com) is a site made with blogger and after a few weeks, I noticed people had to completely disable adblock to even view my website. Is there any way I can fix this? Let me know if you need some code.
  7. sources http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/03/big-name-sites-hit-by-rash-of-malicious-ads-spreading-crypto-ransomware/ http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malvertising-campaign-in-us-leads-to-angler-exploit-kitbedep/ https://www.trustwave.com/Resources/SpiderLabs-Blog/Angler-Takes-Malvertising-to-New-Heights/ https://blog.malwarebytes.org/malvertising-2/2016/03/large-angler-malvertising-campaign-hits-top-publishers/ --- I have no words ... just last week Adobe released a security update for Flash that included 32 critical vulnerabilities: I have ADBlock Plus and Element Blocker installed since "forever" and I won't disable them for anything if and when it becomes obsolete, I will jump to another one, uBlock Origin seems like a valid alternative update your Java, or remove it update your Flash player, or remove it update your Silverlight, or remove it update your fucking browsers, or you risk losing it all
  8. The Co-Founder of Mozilla, Brendan Eich, has announced a new browser based on blocking advertising content and ad tracking. Named, Brave. What sounds really interesting, is that it still has advertisements, but instead of targeted ads based on ad tracking, the ads will be anonymous. That actually sounds kind of crazy. Some of the advertising revenue, will be shared with the users. I'm not even sure how such a thing would be possible.

  10. post a screen capture of Adblock disabled on linustechtips.com edit: by the way no Adblock is considered disabled
  11. Just a quick question. I don't run adblock because I don't mind advertisements so much and I actually want to support the YouTube channels I follow. When I skip advertisements, do they still get paid?? I know I remember Linus saying a while back that he doesn't depend on the "adsends" that YouTube gets so I know it doesn't affect him too much. I would like to support other smaller channels though.
  12. Report: Microsoft will build ad blocking into a future version of Microsoft Edge Begun, the ad wars have. By; Source: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3049998/browsers/report-microsoft-will-build-ad-blocking-into-a-future-version-of-microsoft-edge.html Yay! This is good, and I am glad, now hopefully it will be decent and well made (hopefully). This along with the addition of extensions being added to the next Edge update, it looks as if Edge may be a worthy competitor after all. Thoughts?
  13. Is there any way to block ads without adblock because adblock slows the heck down of chrome and i hate ads so much but i also like my speedy internet
  14. I think it's a great idea because i mostly use Adblock to protect me from epilepsy inducing malware filled ads on download sites. I want to support Content Creators like LMG. I just get lazy and forget to turn off Adblock lol.

    YouTube ads

Hello all I've been reading issues from you people that AdBlock is causing some weird issues in Google Chrome and others. I also wonder why use AdBlock? Is it because most ads you see are irrelevant to the content YouTube channels make (Like seeing a movie ad on LinusTechTips when it should be a tech-related ad). I'm not against using AdBlock, nor am I in favor of using it. This is just my thought and I want to know why you use AdBlock and are most ads you see on your favorite YouTube channels irrelevant to the content.
  16. I just added ublock origin to chrome and was wondering if ublock origin or ublock (chris version) had malware lists like ABP
  17. https://www.reddit.com/r/nerdcubed/comments/25h9ma/you_can_now_whitelist_specific_youtube_channels/ Chrome users who use AdBlock can enable a feature that lets them whitelist specific YouTube channels. This feature will allow certain YouTube channels that you whitelist to show ads, white other YouTube channels will still be blocked. There are many AdBlock variants floating around the chrome web store, so make sure you have this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adblock/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom After confirming that you have the right AdBlock installed, go to the AdBlock options and enable "Allow whitelisting of specific YouTube channels" Now go to the YouTube channel you'd like to whitelist, for example: www.youtube.com/user/linustechtips (Make sure the url of the channel you are viewing is in the "www.youtube.come/user/channelnamehere" format, or in my experience, this feature will not work) Left click the AdBlock icon and select "Whitelist this YouTube channel" DONE! Now, when watching videos from the whitelisted YouTube channel, the AdBlock icon should show a green thumbs up, instead of the red hand, and ads should appear as they usually would. All non whitelisted YouTube channels will still be blocked. If at any point you want to re-enable ads on the channel, go to the channel, left click on the AdBlock icon, and select "Enable AdBlock on this page" Hope this helps those of you that believe certain channels deserve the money they get from ads, but don't want to disable your AdBlock for all of youtube just becuase of the couple channels that actually does. This is my first post so feedback is well appreciated.
  18. something along the lines of "the new update requires permissions to read and change all your data" anyone else see this? I have removed it and switched to uBlock now
  19. Properly many of you hate advertisement as much as i do. But would watch it to support Linus. @Sharif on the forum posted back in august about how you could whitelist youtube channels, but still use adblock on other sites. I'm not sure many people saw the post or are active in the guide section on the forum. So i figured that posting it in off topic would be a great way to let people know. 20. So, today i decided to quit using Adblock for a moments to see if I can give up on it only to end getting overwhelmed with adverts like ''singles are your own area'' ''try this weird tip'' ''work on home and earn xx'' ''do this survey and earn money''. And I had a moment to ask myself why these adverts still exist? Haven't they gotten too obvious and mainstream for people with IQ above 70 to believe them anymore (the survey scam wants you to pay to do a survey to get paid, what the heck?). Maybe I underestimated the stupidity of humans, but seriously this is the only thing that stops me from axing out Adblock , as I cannot bear the thought that people still believe such pathetic scams or to have to see them in every website I visit. I guess ill try to hang on without Adblock, but why is the internet advertisement business still stuck with scams and can't get legitimate for once?
  21. For those of us who use adblock and don't want to remove it because,it makes life much easier but also want to help people like LinusTechTips by at least supporting them through Ads There is a way for you to do both Starting with- Go to options 2. Tick "Allow whitelisting of specific YouTube channels" 3. Then go to the channels you want to support and click "white list this youtube channel " from the extension Thats it,you might come across this bug with double reload but that only happens to me maybe..... and i know this is something very easy/common and many people already know about it but few people like me,never noticed this before and this was in beta last time i checked (month ago)
  22. Hi all I'd like to ask for some information on the 2nd generation chromecast. When watching any content with my chromecast I don't see any adverts on YouTube or Twitch. The reason I ask is because I don't mind watching adverts if I can support the channels I enjoy. Seeing as the chromecast doesn't show the add does this mean that the videos I watch are not receiving ad revenue? Thank you for your time
  23. What a galactic move! As of today, Korean consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung has started to pay AdBlock Plus (ABP) for blocking Microsoft ads. This is an answer to Microsoft themselves paying ABP to have their ads unblocked, which was the reason for Microsoft ads surfacing even when your AdBlock was active. No word has been received from Microsoft. Rumor has it though that they are considering additional payments to ABP as well as integrated Microsoft ads in their new Spartan browser. Samsung is well known for their unusual methods when it comes to advertising. Besides producing video ads that are so bad that you basically must watch them, the Koreans are apparently trying to subliminally redefine what a standard smartphone actually is. Recent photos of Samsung advertising one-hand-operation as a feature for a smartphone (the Galaxy S3 Mini, precisely) support this theory.
  24. I've recently began to use AdBlock mainly for YouTube, obviously whitelisting some of my favorites. I don't know if it's just me or Chrome itself, but does anyone else happen to find that AdBlock takes a noticeable hit on browser speeds? Again, literally may be my eyes but whenever I don't use AdBlock, everything just seems quicker to load.
  25. Hi! Youtube is showing me ads, when adblock plus is active. It only occures if i singed in to my account. It is really annoying because i get 90 sec ads that i cant skip. What i tried so far: resinstall adblock reinstall chreom run ccleaner on web browsers It happens in chrome and firefox as well, but only when i'm singed in, on my pc and on my laptop as well. The 'allow some ads' option is diabled in adblock. Any suggestions?
