Hello, Was wondering which power states (S1, S2, S3, S4,) are more vulnerable to power outages in terms of data corruption, data loss and component damage. And same question but about thunderstorms and lightning. I read that during thunderstorms with lightning it is best to keep computer shut down but still wonder if there is a "safe" power state that is less vulnerable to such weather. I often have my computer in standby and with coming winter with rains and thunderstorms I think I shoukd adjust it to more "safe" power state. Thanks.

This is an issue that's been bugging me for years now and I have finally made the time to address it. However, I need some help. I have a Dell G5 5590 laptop with updated bios and drivers. I have it connected to a Focusrite 18i8 audio interface. Everything should work perfectly on paper, but in practice every once in a while (anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes) the audio will cut out and if not addressed quickly by stopping playback, everything goes extremely bad (i.e. severe glitching and popping and big latency). Playback is only one front. The really annoying part is calls in apps like Discord, where the delay takes time to be noticed and the other callers become genuinely upset. The solution is always to either stop playback and wait for 5-10 seconds or reboot my audio interface. That, combined with the fact that I use bluetooth headphones for hours without any problems, suggests that this is an ASIO related issue. Now ASIO is a rabbit hole on its own, but for those of you interested in real-time audio in Windows you can take a look at this guide. The reason this problem occurs is that Dell laptops have problems with Windows' ACPI drivers, causing severe audio buffer underruns. This has been diagnosed in many Dell laptops in forums over the years using the LatencyMon tool. It seems that the only fix for this issue is a bios update that Dell will not provide. This post is a shot in the dark to be honest, but if there's a chance that a real-time audio wizard sees this, can we do something for all of us that bought Dell laptops without realizing that they are completely unusable for real-time audio applications?

So, i have an Alienware M14x R2 with the original power supply. There is nothing wrong with it, other than the pin in the power supply that tells the laptop it is the correct power supply is broken or bent (although it does not appear to be). i understand that this is a ""safety feature"" but for someone who does not want to buy a new power supply, nor care about breaking this thing, im willing to try anything to bypass it. That being said, i came across this article which states that this fellow managed to bypass it by "Probing ACPI through a Linux Kernel" altering it so it would ignore the command that tells it to either check if the power supply is the right one; or it just ignores the whole thing as a whole. This goes beyond my knowledge as a PC goer and i would really appreciate if i could get some help on either how to do this, or an easier fix? (without buying a new power supply smh) i know they're cheap, blah blah $20 for a power supply--i don't care, im not buying a new one. -Thanks so much!!

Issues installing Ubuntu Server 19.04 onto a Q6600 system
elfensky posted a topic in Troubleshooting
I recently got my hands on an old desktop with an intel Q6600 (LGA775 socket, still has a North Bridge) that runs W7Ultimate and am now trying to get Ubuntu Server 19.04 installed onto it. Anyway, when I select the USB stick from the boot menu, it shows a purple ubuntu screen but then goes to a black screen and says: My only previous experiece booting Ubuntu was running the desktop version off a usb stick on laptops, and that worked flawlessly, so I really have no idea what I have to do to try and debug it. Some googling resulted in me trying to disable ACPI (link) using (link), but holding shift during the boot-up does nothing, and it goes to the same black error screen you see above. I've also tried disabling ACPI2.0 support in BIOS but that netted no changes. My hardware: mobo - Asus P5Q-VM cpu - Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad ram - 2x DDR2 2GB of some corsair xms2 disk - SanDisk 120gb SSD-

So, I'm pretty new here. If I put this in the wrong area sorry. But on to the main subject. I have an Asus Q550 (Yes, I know its pretty old, but I have a pretty tight budget) and it refuses to shut down properly or even at all. When I shut down in Windows or Ubuntu, it shuts down but then hangs while still powered on (Which is very unhelpful since its a laptop and I want it to have it's best battery life as well as shutdown the OS without the possibility of killing my OS.) When I restart, it works fine in Ubuntu, but won't work in Windows. I have looked for drivers to fix this issue, but the latest ones are from 2015 or whenever. The MOBO looks fine as well, so I am kinda stuck on what could cause the issue. PS. I forgot to mention that every time I closed the lid it kills the screen and hangs on both OSs. Which is way more irritating. Extra stuff that may or may not help I have Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.10 installed on it, but even before that, I had ACPI issues with it. It was used, so I don't know much about it other than it had 4 Gigs of RAM (Which I upgraded to 8 Gigs) and it had an intel core i5 (Which I upgraded to a i7) It also had one HDD in it that was 500 Gigs (which I upd to 1 TB)

Got latest iso of windows and Ubuntu. There is no acpi option in the bios either I've checked every inch of it. If you need more information please let me know.

Hello Guys. I have a big problem with a PC and desperately need your help, as I can't seem to get this working again. I built a computer for a friend which worked for some time but then just started getting bluescreens and was not able able to boot anymore. After trying several things I decided I just wanted to reinstall Windows. BUT Starting from a USB Stick which has a fresh download of Windows 10 on it from Microsofts MediaCreationTool gets me a bluescreen, too. I then unplugged all drives, the graphics card, and everything else but a wired Microsoft Keyboard, a USB 2.0 Stick with Windows on it (both in USB 2.0 Port) and a Monitor. I also updated the Bios to the latest version and and did a full reset (CMOS Battery) Bluescreens still appear when trying to start the Windows Installation from the USB drive. The Error messages range from ACPI BIOS ERROR over CRITICAL PROCESS DIED to NTFS FILE SYSTEM Components of the Computer MSI Z270 PC Mate i7 7700k GTX 1080 Ti Samsung 850 Evo Single 8GB DDR4 2133 RAM Stick (Tried with XMP Off and On) Seasonic Focus Plus 650W Other interesting things Sometimes the PC just lights up for a very short time after I switch the PSU Off and then does not turn on again with the power switch, even after plugging in and out the PSU and putting the switch on and off. It has to rest some time without the power cable connected to it and without the CMOS Battery Even though Windows is completely done on this computer I can easily boot a live Linux OS (but Gparted did only work in failsafe mode) I am now at the end of my thoughts and don't know how to continue. If anyone of you has another Idea, please let me know. Thanks a lot in advance!

Trying to install windows 7 on my M6700 because windows 10 is being ass (there's a whole thread on that here), if I leave the eGPU connected windows will bluescreen on boot or during installation with the error 'BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant'. Now it should be ACPI compliant but because of the eGPU and BIOS mods I am not surprised. I tried both UEFI and CSM (Legacy) boot modes and both have the same error. Any help would be appreciated, if I disconnect the eGPU between POST and booting windows 7 it works fine and Windows 10 works "fine".

Hello all! I recently got one of the new Dell XPS 15s the 9550 version. The first thing I did was reinstall windows and I have been experiencing a random blue screen issue. I've tried reinstalling windows several times. The error is as viewed in the windows event viewer is: I originally did not bother to install any dell drivers other than the wireless since this was required to connect to wi-fi. Windows update seemed to fined the rest. I have since installed all dell drivers from their support page. I saw a reference in another post here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/460787-maximus-viii-hero-freezeing-acpi-error/ to a very similar issue and this is really the most information I have been able to find. I updated the BIOS after seeing this and am still experiencing the issue. The only thing I can think of is that I might need to reinstall windows 10 after updating the BIOS but to me that seems like a bit of a long stretch. I tried contacting Dell Support and their suggestion was that I had too many programs installed in windows (all 15 of them). They have sent some dell recovery media my way which has not arrived yet and I'd really rather not have to deal with their bloatware. They told me that the windows media creation tool only makes a partial installation of windows and that I would not be able to activate windows 10 so I don't have high hopes for them actually helping at any point. Had anyone else had issues with this laptop? I'm wondering if it might be a hardware issue with my laptop. Everywhere I look online I find nothing but praise for this laptop and I would say it is prefect minus the bsod issue I'm getting.

Hey forum! So, let me get straight to the problem. When i load up a linux based OS the loading screen spits out ACPI errors left and right and when i disable ACPI my screen is forced into a 4:3 aspect ratio with a resolution of 640x480 (or something similar, i forgot ) which makes whatever distro i'm using at the moment a hassle to work with. I also don't have full kernel logs to work with since i am using live usb's. So what do i do? Your suggestions are appreciated --FTPCraft List of what i could capture nocrs" and report a bug [ 0.224657] ACPI: Power resource [PG00] (on) [ 0.225312] ACPI: Power resource [PG01] (on) [ 0.225960] ACPI: Power resource [PG02] (on) [ 0.239086] ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (domain 0000 [bus 00-fe]) [ 0.239161] acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC: OS supports [ExtendedConfig ASPM ClockPM Segments MSI] [ 0.240143] acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC: OS now controls [PCIeHotplug PME AER PCIeCapability] [ 0.241129] PCI host bridge to bus 0000;00 [ 0.241196] pci_bus 0000:00 root bus resource [bus 00-fe] [ 0.241264] pci_bus 0000:00 root bus resource [io 0x0000-0x0cf7 window] [ 0.241333] pci_bus 0000:00 root bus resource [io 0x0d00-0xffff window] [ 0.242322] pci_bus 0000:00 root bus resource [mem 0xa0000000-0xfeafffff window] [ 0.243734] pci 0000:00:14.0: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 0.244855] pci 0000:00:1c.0: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 0.245263] pci 0000:00:1c.1: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 0.245680] pci 0000:00:1c.2: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 0.246105] pci 0000:00:1c.3: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 0.247315] pci 0000:00:1c:0: PCI bridge to [bus 01] [ 0.247700] pci 0000:02:00.0: System wakeup disabled by ACPI At this point, loading comes to a complete halt.

Hi, my system blue screens every now and then. I was getting quite a bit of "unexpected power loss" due to Asus AI Suit III using "DipAwayMode.exe". I uninstalled AI suit. Same errors continued. I changed the PSU with brand new EVGA NEX650 Gold. Several hours later new error occurred: "The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly." Any clue what's going on. My windows 8.1 is fresh, and all drivers are up to date downloaded from ASUS website. I am running: i7 4790K stock clock Z97 Maximus Gene VII 2x8GB Gskill TridentX at 2400MHz (XMP enabled) Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for boot drive GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 EVGA NEX650 Gold Every single thing is water cooled. I stressed the system with Prime95, Aida64, Valley, Cinebench, Firestrike..... the maximum temp I could get is 50deg C when stressed beyond any typical gaming/rendering/processing intensive load. More interestingly it does not seem to be stress related issue, just happens randomly. All stress test so far successful Any suggestions? Thanks!
