Hey guys, A quick question about trying to future proof my new computer. I am thinking about building a new gaming computer with the Intel Haswell CPU's coming out soon. Many videos have been made over the years about how Quad-core CPU's are fine when only being used for gaming. My question is: with the recent "revelations" about how AMD's 8-core CPU's might be better for some games. Would it be better to build a gaming rig with an i7 over an i5 because of the potential of hyper-threading.? I realize that the i7 is more expensive and so is obviously going to give a slight FPS boost. But in 2-3 years time with a new Battlefield or something, will gaming have moved on so that "8 core" CPU's give a massive boost in performance or will we see Quad-core CPU's be the most cost efficient way to play games for the next few years? Thanks.

Hi, I'm currently running a FX8350 with a HD7870 and, I recently bought a new screen : Asus PB278Q. The thing is, games won't run as easily on a 2560x1440 screen compared to my old LG 1080P monitor... So, I've decided to start planning a brand new build for myself. Here's the specs I've choosen so far : Case : Fractal Design R4 Titanium (No-Window) Motherboard : Gigabyte Socket 1150 (Z87) CPU : Intel 4770K RAM : 16GB Kingston HyperX (Grey) GPU : Sapphire HD7970 3GB Power Supply : Corsair AX750 Soundcard : Asus Xonar STX Radiator Fans : 2 x Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 (Controlled with the integrated fan controller) Case Fans : 3 x Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition Watercooling : Swiftech H220 (With AP-15s) SSD : Corsair Neutron GTX 120GB SSD for GAMES : Crucial M4 256GB Hard Drive : Western Digital Blue 1TB x2 (Raid 1) Miscellaneous : 5,25 - 3,5 Adaptor Corsair's Sleeved Cable AX750 3 Fans Power Distribution (molex) I'm planning to take the HDD cages out entirely, and install my HDD in one of the two 5.25 bay. Also, my SSD would go behing the motherboard tray. EDIT : I've just added the modifications to the list.

Gigabyte demonstrates Improved On-Board Audio with changeable op-amps - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Gigabyte-G1.Sniper-5-M5-Motherboard,22373.html Update: Found a Korean site which takes a closer look at the on board audio on the Gigabyte G1.Sniper 5.. Translated Links: P1 - http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522ASRock%2BZ87%2Bextreme%2522%26start%3D50%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1920%26bih%3D947&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ko&u=http://www.brainbox.co.kr/review/view.asp%3Fid%3D4620&usg=ALkJrhi3Q4DX2KWv-2Xb7vOrXs5e3ocXOQ P2 - http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.brainbox.co.kr%2Freview%2Fview.asp%3Fcmid%3D1%26csid%3D1%26searchcolumn%3D%26searchstring%3D%26page%3D%26id%3D4620%26detail_id%3D33877%26from%3D IMO, this is very cool.. especially the isolation strip from the main PCB which light up!! Also, If I understand the korean article correctly, you have dedicated line-in (G port) which then goes through the amp before going out to headphone/speaker out.. so you can your your mobo as a headphone/speaker amp! Please correct me if i'm wrong in my interpretation of this Gigabyte is showing off it's new Easytune Software. It seems to feature easy overclocking as well as Fan Xpert 2 type fan profiles. As of now here are the things I want to include in my build: MoBo: Asrock z77e CPU: core i5 3550k Ram: 16gb corsair vengeance GPU: 660ti MSI or Asus Cooling: swiftech h220 PSU: Seasonic 80+ platinum 600watts Boot drive: Samsung 840 Storage: 2.5 inch 1tb black drive Casing: prodigy Theme: red and black Here are some of my questions: Is it worth it to wait for HASWELL, GTX 700 series and DDR4 integration? Any improvement in terms of spec? Is there an 80+ platinum powersupply that is below 600 watts?

What's up LTT peeps firstly, wow this new forum is amazing now, props to Slick and co. Okay so onto my question :) I'm waiting for haswell so the build log will at least be 3 months away but that doesn't mean I can't plan aye? Now the case I am still undecided on, it's either going to be an corsair obsidian case ie: 900d or an silverstone tj07/11 now I already have a fair idea on how to run the loop in the obsidian's but the temjins are giving me pause for thought so can you run a loop as follows; cpu→gpu→gpu→rad→res→pump→rad I know it doesn't matter running gpu before cpu or vice versa but what about running rad after rad. The way the run would be the most aesthetically pleasing imo Apologies for the wall of text but hopefully it was a good read :) Optimus

Hey, Came across this article at HardwareHeaven.com. The folks there went to Taipei to visit Gigabyte, and were shown two Haswell motherboards, including the G1-Killer. Looks like they are really upgrading sound functionality, including allowing swappable Op-Amps. Lots of pictures and info here: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1733/pg1/gigabyte-next-generation-intel-preview-enhanced-audio-motherboards-full-article.html Cheers

Thought everybody whos thinking about the new haswell cpus should read this... .If you get your freak on by an extreme low power state you may need to get a new power supply if you want to use the new C6/C7 low power states of Intel's upcoming Haswell processors. These new power states require a power supply that can maintain a minimum current load of 0.05A on the CPU exclusive 12V2 rail. The previous ATX12V v2.3 design guidelines called for a minimum load of 0.5A on the CPU power rail, so a lot of older and budget power supplies will likely not meet the new specification, resulting in stability or shutdown issues once the system enters the C6/C7 power state. Unfortunately, there's no way to know which power supplies are fully Haswell compliant as PSU manufacturers do not usually report the minimum load on their specification sheets. Older or bargain basement power supply units may be unable to achieve this, and might become unstable or trigger a UVP/OVP shutdown once the system enters the C6/C7 power states. This is because the previous ATX12V v2.3 design guidelines for Ivy Bridge and its predecessors only called for a minimum load of 0.5 Amps on the CPU power rail, hence a less sophisticated internal feedback loop/protection could be used in older or cost-reduced offerings, which will not support the new standards. Most worryingly, PSU manufacturers (even the enthusiast grade ones) do not usually report the minimum load on their spec sheets, so it is virtually impossible for us to come up with a list of supported units at this time. To ensure a smooth transition, mainboard designers and system integrators have been told to implement a BIOS-level toggle to enable/disable the new C6/C7 power states. http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_haswell_low_power_states_could_require_a_new_psu.html

I currently have a i7 3770 and a rubbish little mATX Gigabyte board. Should I upgrade my board or should I wait for the next generation and get an unlocked CPU and a good ATX board?

http://nl.hardware.info/nieuws/35183/cooler-master-haswell-voedingenprobleem-een-mythe-alle-voedingen-geschikt Since Haswell is going to be so power efficient and uses so little power at idle the discussion in some other places has been that some power supplies aren't able to run a Haswell CPU because they cant deliver clean power at such low power. If you are planning on a new Haswell PSU is that something you need to check before purchace of a PSU? Does it need to have a certification "Haswell Ready" or something?! I saw this (link above) on a hardware site in my country that CM in this one claimes that theirs are ready for it. In the item it also mentioned Corsair and other brands... What are your thoughts on this? All (not dino age PSUs) from a decent brand will be good for a Haswell system and no need to check for a Haswell Ready thingy? Maybe some specs important? Singlerail? Or anything above 80+ xxxx certification?

Hi again :) I am soon going to build a new PC for myself this summer and I was wondering on what size PSU I should get. I will be using a 3770k and dual 7970's on a V Gene. According to TDP Calculator, I won't need anything higher than ~600W but i seriously doubt it. My current option is the AX760 due to it's great stock sleeving, fully modular and 80+ platinum. I was wondering whether I should notch it up to an 860, because at full load (after OC), I don't want it dying on me. Also, if my patience holds out, I'll be getting the 4770k with the VI Gene. Please can you also recommend your estimate on what wattage I should use. Looking forward to your responses.

Razer is a company known for its gaming peripherals and for its ‘cult of Razer’ Branding. It is slightly less well known as a manufacturer of tablets and pc’s. They tested the waters by teasing a new line of product called the switchblade which was a netbook sized ‘gaming’ pc in early 2011. That never actually hit the market but what did was Razer’s Blade notebook that hit shelves in early 2012 and was refreshed in late 2012. Well another refresh was just announced and I am thoroughly impressed. Packed with the latest gen Intel CPU’s and high end 700 series GPU’S from Nvidia it’s sure to be a great performer. That’s all fine and dandy, but why am I so impressed? Well it’s the fact that it’s thinner than Apples MacBook Air. I actually didn't think anything like this was achievable but Razer has engineered a special cooling system to keep the monster well ventilated, after all a laptop is useless if it scalds you when you use it on your lap. It’s 14’’ with a 1600X900 display and weighs 4.1 Lbs. As expected with a notebook this small the storage is completely flash based with the base storage set to be a 128GB Msata ssd which should make windows 8 even snappier. The starting price comes at a premium $1,799 and it is set to be released later in Q2. Here are a full list of system specs taken from Razer, try not to drool too much. Processor Future 4th gen Intel® Core™ processor (formerly codename Haswell) Memory 8GB onboard memory (DDR3L-1600MHz) Graphics and Video NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M (2GB GDDR5 VRAM, Optimus™ Technology) Display 14.0" HD+ 16:9 Ratio, 1600x900, with LED backlight Storage 256GB SATA III SSD Power Compact 150W Power Adapter Built-in 70Wh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery Communications Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 (802.11a/b/g/n + Bluetooth® 4.0) Size and Weight Width: 13.6” / 345mm Depth: 9.3" / 235mm Height: 0.66"/ 16.8mm Weight: 4.1 lbs / 1.88kg Operating System Windows® 8 (64-Bit)

Hey guys was wondering what FMB mean't on processors. I noticed that the 4930K has a 2011P FMB and the 4770K has a 2013D FMB. What does this mean? What does it mean for performance, and which one would you pick?

WCCFTech reports that images of MSI's Z87-G45 Gaming Motherboard popped up on chinese websites along with benchmarks and images of retail sample 4770k and 4570k. They were taken down shortly but the website managed to grab some before that. The post also contains some benchmarks of the retail samples of 4770k and 4570k Have a read at the source - http://wccftech.com/msi-z87-g45-gaming-motherboard-spotted-tested-core-i74770k/ Z87-G45 Gaming One of MSI's focuses also seems to be high-ish end on-board audio, though, no details as to what all methods they've employed to improve it apart from using a Sound Blaster Core chip.
