Just last month, IDC predicted that Android would soon overtake Apple in terms of tablets shipped. If their latest numbers are correct, the tides have now officially turned! IDC reports that for the first three months of 2013, 49.2 million tablets have already shipped, with 27.8 million of those tablets running Android. In contrast, Apple shipped just 19.5 million units. Apple is still the most popular single brand in the tablet world, but Samsung isn’t too far behind with 8.8 million units. While that’s less than half of what Apple is shipping, it is still a jump forward for Samsung compared to the same timeframe last year. In Q1 2012, Apple held 58.1% of the tablet market, and Samsung held just 11.3%. The year is far from over, so what will happen next? The answer to that question hinges on what Samsung, Apple and Google are planning. At Google I/O, it’s possible we will see a new Nexus tablet, that could certainly have an impact on the market. We also can’t say for sure what Apple will do next. They've had a lot of success with the iPad Mini, and the rumoured HD version of the Mini is expected later this year. As for Samsung? They recently released the impressive (though a bit pricey) Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, in order to better compete against 8-inch tablets like the iPad Mini, and they likely have a few other tricks up their sleeves. ***This is really minor news for most people so I though this subtopic made more sense than the News and Reviews one.*** So after months of delays and frustration, it seems us Bionic users will finally get the smoothness we have been waiting for: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/04/18/motorola-droid-bionic-jelly-bean-update-starts-rolling-out/ Anyone else frustrated with how long these updates take? I know the carriers have to "validate" each release, but C'mon! This is the sort of thing that makes me gravitate towards devices like the Nexus 4 or the S3/S4, as they either have very strong official (or unofficial) support for software. Sorry for the rant guys and gals, but I had totally accepted that ICS would be the last android OS on the Bionic, and this just reminded me of how much I hate the current system.

I am on the market for a smart phone that does gaming really well. I'm talking about games like GTA Vice City, Real Racing, and Shadowgun Deadzone. The reason I am asking is because I am really trying to wrap my head around how to tell what a phone's GPU is capable of. On computers you can easily look at the specs and make sense of it all but on mobile phones it baffles me. For example the Adreno 320 on the HTC One & the PowerVR SGX 544MP3 on the Samsung Galaxy S4. TLDR: I don't know how to tell a smart phones GPU specs, also what phone has the best GPU between the HTC one and the Samsung Galaxy S4?

It's always nice to see older devices receiving updates even if the OS was released 6 months ago, this is good compared to many other manufacturers, hopefully it won't cause any battery life problems... The updates includes several features from the GS 4 but it's still missing things such as the new Camera UI as well as air gestures which will probably not make it due to lack of required hardware. However keep in mind this is an incomplete update, Sammobile says the full update should be released in June. You can follow the link below the source if you want to flash the firmware (you'll need the international i9300 Exynos-based model) but do so at your own risk. Hello All, I'm having issues connecting my dad's HTC One X to our WiFi network. This started occurring after the most recent Android Update for the HTC One X, from Ice Cream Sandwich/HTC Sense 4 to 4.1.1 Jelly Bean/HTC Sense 4+. Previously it connected fine without any issues after getting in range of the wireless, and it did its job just like any of our other wireless devices. We honestly have no idea why this started happening, but can draw the assumption that the update is to blame. Here is some information that may be helpful: Phone: HTC One X Gray Network: At&t Android Version: 4.1.1 HTC Sense Version: 4+ Software Number: 3.18.502.6 710RD HTC SDK API Level: 4.63 Kernel Version: 3.4.10-g310e8f1 root@abm030 #1 SMP PREEMPT Build Version: 3.18.502.6 CL131981 release-keys Router: D-Link DIR 615 Firmware Version: 5.10 Any help is appreciated, and I may have gone overboard on the information but when it comes to solving problems you can never know too much about it. Many thanks in advance, Exile

Hey guys! Im here to report something a little different than most news released here. Saurik, the man who invented cydia, Mobile Substrate, and Winterboard on the iPhone has now released Cydia Substrate and Winterboard for Android devices. This means that people will no longer need an iPhone in order to run and install tweaks very easily. No more putting custom roms, and going through all that trouble just to modify something simple on your Android device. Sources: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/05/14/cydia-substrate-makes-it-way-to-android/ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.saurik.substrate http://www.cydiasubstrate.com/ Have fun installing tweaks and themes on your rooted Android Devices!!

So I am looking to stream movies from my Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to my Android 4.1.3 but these prissy OS's don't like to talk to each other, what could I use to effectively stream from my living room to my bedroom?

Hello, I am a 2nd year university student who is approaching the 3rd year this September. I am required to create a major project which will be worth nearly 50% of my final mark. I am thinking along the lines of creating a mobile application for the Android platform but it can be desktop software. However, i'm not sure what to create for this app. Please can you help me think of ideas to do for this upcoming project. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks in advance

Earlier today a few photos were posted on XDA and a video showing a Nexus 4 at a mobile expo in Thailand. The interesting part is that it was running a completely new build number and kernel version which was built in May and Android version 4.3. As one would expect for such a minor update, there doesn't seem to be much new at first glance, other then a few differences in the camera app UI (check video below). There several other build numbers, all of them featuring the letter J and the Jelly bean Easter Egg, which all but confirm that this new version of Android will still be called Jelly bean. So far all rumours and leaks point at an Android update being released soon, possibly June 10 which is the rumoured release date for the White Nexus 4. via: http://www.droid-life.com/2013/05/24/android-4-3-possibly-spotted-running-on-nexus-4-build-number-jwr45b/ (Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41782938&postcount=255, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41786214&postcount=258)

This is the rumoured HTC M4 (codename) you may have seen on this forum several weeks ago. (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/12262-htc-m4-leaked-suggests-flagship-style-with-middleweight-specs/) Actual design is quite a bit different but it still keeps features from the HTC One such as Boomsound and Blinkfeed but it has a 4.5" qHD display (which is not very good), is powered by a Qualcomm 200 quad-core processor @1.2 GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal Storage (with microSD card slot, finally), 8MP shooter (no Ultrapixel here :( ), 1860mAh battery and all the usual specs you'd expect for a phone released this year. Weirdly enough it also supports dual-SIM and will only be available in Russia Ukraine and EMEA starting from June. There is no news of a US/international variant, although I'd expect there to be one perhaps with different hardware but similar design. All in all not the hardware is not impressive at all, it seems like they pulled off something similar to a SGS3 mini, but the design looks very nice. What is your most recent phone that you've purchased/ acquired e.g via Contract upgrade? Compare that to previous devices that you have owned. I'm curious to know as I was messed around by my carrier/ service provider when trying to get an upgrade so I didn't bother and now I kind of want to get a new one.

I had an offer to trade my Galaxy SIII for a Samsung Ativ S..What are your thoughts on windows phone 8? Should I go for it; try a new platform, or should I keep my SIII? I use basic news services, social media, dropbox google drive and instagram...The apps ain't the problem..The problem is the basic things that windows phone is missing...I've heard that the screen rotation doesn't lock...the notification sucks, multitasking sucks..music app sucks.. Are all of these things true? Are there any other WP8 bugs or bad pieces of code? Thanks

Within the last few months Android has passed the number of sales than ios(Apple). I was wondering what you guys thought about it. Some people might look at this and think that currently Android is more successful, but I think that Apple is. The main goal of a public corporation (not private owned/non-profit) is to make money. While Android has more sales now that Apple, Google(the maker of Android) is still making less money. Apple gets almost all the money that the phone makes because the ios is made by Apple, and so is the phone itself. While Android has to split the profit between the maker of the phone(Samsung/LG/Etc.), and the phone company(T-Mobile,Verizon,Etc.), so Android would be making less money per phone. Apple also sells expensive phones so each sale makes a lot of profit compared to a cheaper Android phone. Apple is also leading in the App Market with more app and all the apps that are checked by Apple(even if not approved and put on the App Store) will cost the maker $100, while on Android there are less apps and it's free to make. Apple is also leading in music sales while Android is lacking in music. I know I put this together really sloppy like but here's a simple version of what I said. Just for a quick recap... -Apple makes most of the money from each phone -Apple phones cost more compared to most Android phones -Apple has more apps, and gets $100 per app even if not put on the App Store, while it's free on Android -Apple is leading in music sales Now tell me what you think! Who is more successful? Who do you prefer? Why do you think it's better than the other? I'll be reading all of them!

Another one of ASUS' Computex 2013 Announcements involved a very unique product, the Transformer Book Trio which actually consists of two pieces: and operates in three modes: Source: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/06/03/asus-unveils-dual-cpu-i7-haswellatom-dual-os-windows-8android-dual-storage-1tb64gb-11-6-transformer-book-trio/ Sounds very interesting on paper but I would rather see some reviews and experiences with this product before jodging. Are you interested in this type of product?

The latest version of Gmail for Andorid with the new UI is slowly rolling out (at last) but if you're impatient (like me) and want to sideload it before you get it automatically, clock on any of the mirrors below or go to the source. It makes use of a slide out menu for navigation and you can drag down to refresh similar to iOS. I must say it looks very clean and efficient in terms of screen space. Ah well, I didn't really expect a major change anyway. I really like the stock Android design language. Clean and simple. Still, excited about what Google I/O will bring! http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/04/26/google-is-working-on-and-testing-android-4-3-its-still-jelly-bean/

I am looking to get a new smart phone and i am stuck between the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One. I know the build of the One is superior to the GS4, but looking at the specs i see the GS4 has a faster CPU and the android skin looks more user friendly (and looks more light an airy compared to Sense 5). i am really leaning to the Galaxy S4, i would love to here you guys opinion on this topic. Please Help! I'm really stuck!

I was wondering whether people would actually want an app for the forum. I know and iOS developer and I am sure some of you guys know some so I was wondering whether you guys wanted it. Also the app could be charged at a small sum say 1 $ so that the app developer can at least cover his costs and the forum can make a small amount of money as well. The app could also link to Linus's videos as well as maybe general tech new submitted by users of the forum.
