Since last week my Athlon 860k build has been acting a bit weird. In the 20th of may the build was infected with a virus that caused it have constant memory errors. So i formated all of my drives and installed a brand new version of windows 10 pro, updated to creators update. In the same day i kept getting random BSODS, when i would use the peek function on full screen applications, but that stopped. I also ran 4 pases of memtest on the 25th ( came out clean).Yesterday on the 26th i was watching youtube on two tabs and then most of the browser tabs crashed along with opera itself (this also happed last week as well) and was gaming for 3 hours and it Blue Screened. So this morning i ran a combination of aida 64 and unigene valley and for some reason the cpu was not being stressed at 100% so i downloaded intel burn test and ran it simultaneously with valley. Ran fine for 20 minutes however on the aida stressed test screen the cpu was not being pinned at 100% and i checked intel burn test and a notification from the app appeared saying that there was system instability and then the system immediately crashed. Are these signs of cpu, memory or motherboard failure? P.S Temps were in the low 60's Here are the specs of the build: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: AMD - Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor (Purchased For $80.00) CPU Cooler: Corsair - H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (Purchased For $100.00) Motherboard: ASRock - FM2A88X-ITX+ Mini ITX FM2+ Motherboard Memory: Kingston - HyperX Fury Red 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (Purchased For $60.00) Storage: Transcend - SSD370 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $80.00) Storage: Hitachi - Travelstar 5K1000 1TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (Purchased For $0.00) Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 970 4GB G1 Gaming Video Card (Purchased For $369.99) Case: Phanteks - Enthoo EVOLV ITX Mini ITX Tower Case (Purchased For $80.00) Power Supply: Corsair - Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $50.00) Total: $819.99 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2017-05-27 08:16 EDT-0400

So i recently brought a H100I GTX for my amd build for a Athlon 860k and i decided to overclock. I acheived upto 4.2ghz stable but there's a problem the only two options relating to cpu frequncy are auto (which turns off my OC) or manual which pins my cpu at 4.2 ghz all the time, which i don't like. How can i set the frequency to dynamic on a ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+? Hello, I want to do an overhaul of my PC and wanted to go with the i5 2500k as a step up from my Athlon 860K, however, I am moving to Mini ITX and I can't find any mini ITX boards that support overclocking at my price point. How much better is the i5 2500K compared to my Athlon 860K? and, since I cannot find a board capable of overclocking, would I still get a good upgrade if I just went for the i5 2500 instead? Thanks, BP.

Is the 860k a good option for a budget oriented build? Or should I opt for something better?

AMD APU A8 7600 vs AMD Athlon X4 860K
Pablo_Escobar posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Which processor is better for gaming ? AMD APU A8 7600 or AMD Athlon X4 860K ? I do not need A8 7600's internal gfx. I don not have enough money to buy a high end processor right now. TIA. -
Hey so I have been wondering if my Athlon 860k is bottlenecking my GTX 1060 6gb, on CS:GO on lowered settings I can only manage 60fps, which I KNOW is less than the 1060 is capable of. My only question is I'm not sure if cooling could also be a cause because I only have 2 fans inside my computer and the cpu fan that came with the cpu. I ran tests and the temperature seemed to be okay. I want to run setup but my wireless keyboard won’t let me hit F1. I’ve tried all the other ports for USB’s including the back for the wireless adapter for my keyboard and mouse. I’ve put my a6-7400k into my computer because it has integrated graphics (I don’t have a gpu for my Athlon 860k yet) so I just wanted to see how the performance was as I’ve upgraded the power supply. Could this be be because of my wireless mouse and keyboard? I don’t have a wired keyboard spare. Thanks in advance!

I recently noticed some fps drops while playing World of Tanks. Then it got really bad with drops down to around 5fps from 60fps. After a while, my computer started crashing randomly. I would be editing a video with Vegas and boom! 30mins of work gone.... (I should prbly save more often.) Or even just opening File explorer would occasionally cause it to crash. I eventually factored out a broken PSU and began suspecting my CPU. Upon further inspection I found that my cpu was overheating like crazy. Idle temps at 80C and a record max temp at 120C. My cpu cooler is stock, but was sufficient enough to maintain smooth gameplay for over six months. Temps are great everywhere else. Is something wrong with my cpu? Or can it be something dumb like a broken heat sensor thus causing a throttle? I am a youtuber so I need my computer to work badly. I am also 15 and broke so simply buying a new computer is out of the question. Thanks in advance for the help. Yesterday I was messing around with one 8 gb stick (as opposed to my regular two 2gb sticks), and well, my chipset didn't really agree with it running at its rated speeds (1066/1333): blue screens, game crashes, webpage crashes Anyway, I clocked it all the way down to 800mhz and it seems to have stopped blue screening, however webpages and games would still easily crash, BUT that's not what I'm here for. What I AM here for, though, is that running that one stick at 800mhz seems to have heavily impacted performance: I would get half the fps in Killing Floor 2 (maxed at 30 instead of 60), and I was wondering if the Athlon x4 860k is sensitive to memory speeds similar (but not as drastic) to ryzen, OR if it was running like ass only because I was running single channel as opposed to dual channel (though that only happens with iGPUs)

HELP ME!!! I just got a SECOND AMD Athlon X4 860K QUAD Core CPU and it only shows 2 cores! I bought one about a month ago and it did the same so I sent it back thinking it was defective. AMD Overdrive, CPU-Z, and Task Manager all show 2 cores! I have no clue why this is! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So, I built a pretty bad PC. I nabbed a used GTX 780 for 180 usd, about 20 bucks less than the current gen RX 480 4g, and way less than the GTX 1060 6g. For the CPU...I got an Athlon 860k and a crap mobo with no voltage control. Max stable OC on the CPU is 4.3 GHz. Ram is ddr3 at 1866 MHz. Since about a week after the pc was built, I've been running this pc off of a loaner monitor from a friend that's 1920x1080, 60hz. I would like to upgrade the monitor to a 1440p display, but I understand that at certain points, my CPU just cannot handle the GPU load, even at 1080p. However at 1440p (via NVIDIA control panel) I see nearly the same GPU load (plus a bit more) but the CPU is still maxed What I'd like to know is: Should I upgrade my cpu/mobo this black friday and nab a 1080p monitor for keeps? or... Buy a nice 1440p monitor, as the same bottlenecks exist in the same fashion at that res, or Just wait for zen/kaby lake in 2017 and make a monitor choice then? For the budget, I've got about 370 dollars I'd be absolutely willing to spend. While zen may be advertised as super cheap and offer (potentially) i7 performance at i5ish prices, the current skylake i5's/i3's, either ghetto OC'd (via downgraded bios) or just stock (65/6600) are enticing. If black friday comes, I may just be able to upgrade the CPU/mobo/ram, but be left with a terrible budget for a monitor, considering even the base skylake prices. All that said, I feel like most of my games are still somewhat playable. By downgrading GTAV to 50hz (or gasp...30) I see very few prominent stutters that take me out of the experience. Any other games that are not CPU intensive run damn smooth at 1080p 60hz. Reallistically, my budget may allow for a 1080p monitor and an i3/z170 combo (if the price is right) but I'm not sure if that's how I want to play games for the next year and a half or more.

Hello, I have been thinking lately my processor choice, AMD Athlon X4 860K or AMD A10-7870K Black Edition. So I'm now asking from you which is better for my budget gaming computer? Some stats for you: AMD ATHLON X4 860K Cores: Quad-Core Threads: 4 Clockspeed: 3.7GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) L2 Cache: 4MB Technology: 28nm Socket: FM2+ TDP: 95W AMD A10-7870K BLACK EDITION: Cores: Quad-Core Threads: 4 Clockspeed: 3.9GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) L2 Cache: 4MB Technology: 28nm Socket: FM2+ TDP: 95W --------- Which one is better and is it really worth it to spend double money for 7870K? Thanks already for help! -N4vySc4n-

IM going to be buying the AMD 860K for a budget build using the stock heatsink, as of very recently AMD released a new boxed version of this CPU that now comes with an "AMD quiet cooler" so the choice is between the two, what is the AMD quiet cooler i cant seem to find much info about it anywhere. i want to know if its a better heatsink fan design or if its a passive solution the latter which i have no desire to buy. I'm continuing to search but any info would be helpful. if anyone knows about it. just incase its asked where i saw this: It was on newegg. and of course I just found the info,,, I search for hours with no results i post my question here and then look and wham, found it right off the bat. AMD releases new coolers for their processors

Hello LTT Community, I recently went on vacation to the Caribbean islands and brought my pc with me, but it has not been smooth sailing however. Firstly the computer is very loud now due to the fans ramping up to compensate for the heat. So i tried to remedy that by by putting the fans into silent mode but all that caused is that my system thermal throttles and then crashes, then after that i try to turn it on and the system refuses to power up until the temperature goes down. My system looks like this at the moment. What are my options to remedy this problem. Here's the system specs just in case. So I have an 860K in my current machine and was wondering if it will bottleneck a RX 470. If so, by how much? PS: I will upgrade to zen about my next year, but I want to upgrade my GPU from a 950 now.

Hello everyone! I currently own a FM2-A55M-E33 with an a8 7600 processor and a MSI r9 270x GPU. Additionally, I have a Hyper TX3 EVO cooler for my CPU. My simple question is; would it be wise to upgrade to a Amd athlon x4 860k? The performance increase is about 10% for €75,-, which sounds great. Additionally, I could also save this money and invest it in my next build. However, I don't know when I'll build the next one. Please help me decide.

Okay I tried to OC on this weird MSI board and it did not do anything, okay that is weird. Then I realized the CPUs does not turbo and decided, why not try to change the stock clocks to turbo speed? And guess what it worked. I tried to push it to 4.3GHz and it failed... Well shocker! But it works now properly at 4.2GHz instead of 4.0GHz... So is this the board being terrible or is it the CPUs? I had a 860K before this and it had same issue it only went to 3.8GHz... (never tried to increase that CPUs speed tough)

Just a quick question. Is a 400 watt psu enough for an athlon 860k and a gtx950? I wass looking at this psu: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/be-quiet-power-supply-bn266

so a quick question: what are the differences between a 860K and a 880K besides the clock speed? And if thats the only difference then there is really no use for the 880K because you can just overclock the 860K, i can understand it if you are not into computers, but if you like overclocking and want to save money the 860K is the best choice right? Plus heat should not be a problem because they have exactly the same stock cooler... -Pc Noob

First off my build. CPU = Athlon x4 860k 3.7GHz - 4.0GHz Mobo = MSI A88x-G43 GPU = MSI Titanium Edition GTX 970 4GB ( Actually 3.5GB ) RAM = 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws 2400MHz (underclocked to 2133MHz due to mobo and cpu incompatibility) Cooler = Corsair H100i Liquid Cooler PSU = Corsair HX1050 Semi Modular HDD = 120GB Kingston SSD / 2TB WD / 1TB WD / 250GB WD Case = Thermaltake Core V51 Monitor = 60" LG Plasma TV ( So only 1920x1080) Ok so my CPU seems to be a crazy power hog. I have searched the net high and low for max voltages for this chip and have seen ppl say max is 1.475v while others have said 1.55v is safe. Right now I'm overclocked to 4.2GHz but I'm pushing 1.5v through this thing to keep it stable. I can drop that voltage to 1.48v and be stable but not in Battlefield 3 or 4. All other games are fine , everything stable, its only Battlefield that crashes to BSOD. Anything past 4.2GHz is unstable as hell. I have actually OCed to 4.5GHz and seemed stable for 5 hours of prime95, but the second i stopped the stress it freezes. So it seems stable under load , but once its at idle it will freeze needing a reboot. I have gone as far as trying 4.3GHz at 1.536v but crashed after 3 hours of prime95. All power saving options are OFF, turbo is OFF, vdroop offset control for CPU and NB are set to 80%, CPU overclocked to 4.2GHz at 1.5v, NB overclocked to 2000MHz. RAM is underclocked from 2400MHz to 2133MHz because of mobo and cpu incompatibility. Timings are set to 10-12-12-31 and 1.65v. With the H100i my temps never have went above 49C gaming or running Prime95. But voltage is already at 1.5v. Can I go higher with low temps? Is it safe to run 1.5v or a bit over for 24/7 use on kaveri steamroller? Did I maybe get a dud CPU? Anyone else have this CPU and see similar results? Another question is, they just released the 880k 4.0GHz with turbo to 4.2GHz. Would it be worth upgrading my 860k to an 880k? I do know that my CPU is bottlenecking my GTX 970 and I will be upgrading my mobo/cpu/ram soon but until then is the 880k a good option? or will it be pretty much the same as my 860k? Any response to this post is welcome as I have barely found any info on the 860k and what I have found all seems different than mine. Thx

Is it safe to go over 1.5v if my temps are down? Running prime95 my max temp on the CPU was 51C using the H100i liquid cooler. I know that voltage and heat both play a part in killing the CPU, but, I have heard some say the max voltage for the 860k is like 1.475v and others say 1.55v is OK. That seems crazy high. I am overclocked right now to 4.4GHz and sitting at 1.52v. Is this OK for 24/7 ? My temp at idle is around 30C and under load like I said it has never gone over 51C. All power saving options = OFF Spread Spectrum = OFF Software P-State Limit = OFF Vdroop Control for CPU and NB = 100% CPU Multi = 44 NB = 2200 CPU Voltage = 1.520v NB Voltage = 1.300v RAM = 2133MHz/1.65v 1-10-12-12-31 It has been pretty hard to find info on this CPU. Any help is very appreciated. Thank You.

So I've been looking to upgrade my old FM-1 based CPU. And numer 1 contender at the moment is AMD's 860k. As it's more than affordable price point is exactly what a very budget minded buyer is looking for. For now I intend to pair the CPU with a Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-DS2 motherboard, 8 gigabytes of Kingston's HyperX Fury Ram at 1866mhz and an MSI Gaming branded Radeon R9 270 with slight overclocks. However. Being rather tech savvy I've been keeping an eye on benchmarks and reviews and figured out the 860k has a competitor. The Intel Pentium G3258. Now I'm well aware that in terms of CPU performance Intel is the better option for high end stuff. But what I'm looking for is a middle of the pack kind of build. That'll run most games at 1080p with 30FPS or higher. What has me question my choise with the 860k is that most comparisons actually rate the G3258 being the more powerful CPU (Albeit the difference isint massive, and in many cases it seems neglectible). So I wonder is it worth trading the convenience of a quad core (As most modern games dont really launch properly with dual cores) for a CPU that... In many cases provides and improvement of only three or four frames per second. And yes, I'm perfectly aware that the LGA 1150 offers a clear upgrade path, while the FM2+ does not. But being a realist there's no way I'll ever be able to afford even an entry level i5 hence why upgradeability isint anywhere near the top of my priority list.

hey all, i was wondering which cpu should i use? im building a gaming computer and i plan on using the r9 380 4gb gpu. my friend is saying the athlon is better and that the i3 is not worth it. what is your take on this? thanks ahead of time
