Is buying a quad-core with HT a mistake? Or a hexa-core with SMT for that matter? Since next generation of consoles will have 8, should gamers avoid quad and hexa cores or is the 8 core Zen 2s in the new console downclocked so much PC gamers should not even worry?

hey! i just got a brand new (never used) AMD FX-8370 On a msi 970 gaming motherboard along with a AMD Radeon HD 7900 series gfx card and on valley benchmark i am getting about 930. on cinebench i got 32.28 on open gl and 214 on the cpu test. this seems kinda lower than i expected can anyone recommend anything?

Most of the time, cpu's with high core counts ie 6/8 cores are not utilized properly in games, I get it, higher frequency cpu's are better for this.....on pc All the new consoles (xbox one/ps4 and later) have octa-core cpu's that run at laughably low frequencies, as far as gaming is concerned. From that I can assume that game dev's have managed to make use of each core, which would mean that 8-core game support should be here. Why does pc only still use 4 cores??? Is it the way games are made or that pc hasn't seen a mainstream cpu with more then 4 cores until this year that has stopped us getting that support?

AMD is currently on the negative end of a class action lawsuit due to their FX processors. AMD advertised their FX processor as having 8 cores, but now the courts must decide what a "core" actually is. Unlike Ryzen, AMD's FX series had a different architecture and they have even said that with this design, they have approximately 80% of the performance of "true" 8-core processors. The argument then, is that people didn't pay for the performance of a 6-core, they paid for an 8-core. This all having been said, I personally don't think there is a whole lot to this lawsuit and I think it should be dropped. That having been said, I didn't buy one of AMD's top-of-the-line processors in 2015. What do you guys think? Then again, this does kind of make sense, as now AMD only needs one die initially to work from. As well, this probably means AMD's 6 core Zen CPUs will be around 350-400 dollars as if they were priced higher AMD wouldn't have anything to compete with Intel down at the 300 dollar range. Keep in mind to take this with a grain of salt. This rumor was started by a site that cited no sources; they only stated they got this from their sources but said nothing about who or how they got the info. I wouldn't be too surprised if this is false and we will initially get 8,6, and 4 core Zen CPUs.

Hey ppl, I got a question, I'm currently running a AMD-6300 6 core CPU on my desktop I want to upgrade to an 8-core AMD (Sorry Intel peeps I just think AMD is good enough for the workload) Temperatures aren't to much a problem, I get temperatures under load of around 40C or so with my cooler (Don't remember what cooler though sorry) I'm using a MSI 970a-G43 motherboard, anyone gor a good 8 core CPU for that board, or should I get a new Motherboard all together? Opinions appreciated

So I am building myself a PC for the reasons mentioned in the title. I thought I should ask the communities opinion on the parts that I am looking to use. 1. Budget & Location I currently live in Johannesburg South Africa, thus all PC parts are WAY more expensive than in Canada or the US. My Budget is R30 000 or approximately USD$ 2600 or CAD$ 3100. 2. Aim This PC should be the solution to all my power hungry tasks. I will be doing 3D modeling, 3D and 2D animation, video/image/audio editing and creation, coding in C++/Java/HTML5 as well as gaming. This PC must be very upgradable or "future-proof". I will also be taking this rig to LAN parties thus it does need to look good and be as quiet as possible, but silence is not the most important thing in this build. 3. Monitors I currently own two LG Flatron W2453V's running a 1920x1080 resolution each in extended display mode. I might add in a 4k display in a few years. 4. Peripherals I wont be buying any peripherals, as I already own pretty decent ones, listed below. 5. Why are you upgrading? My current PC is great. But it simply does not have the power to keep up with the tasks I will be demanding of it. 6. So, what do you guys think? Any waiters like me? Here are my reasons for not upgrading last/this year: I wanted Ivy-Bridge-E, but didn't get it because.. - It is really the last CPU to be supporting DDR3 - The socket 2011 will not support the 8-core CPUs of Haswell-E - I just saw bad reviews about overclocking it - Ugly name, it's again last generation but simply a "renovation" of Sandy B-E - Nothing bad getting 2 more cores/4 more threats/more cache on top... For the Kepler 700: - Great GPU but released at a bad time - after hearing about G-Sync I did not want to upgrade until I don't get a monitor with that module. G-Sync was released kind of late... - Does not have the performance to keep 60+FPS on all games when 3D is on...as I assumed it would happen. - Not much improvement from 600 series and Fermi - the efficiency (and probably performance too) gap to Maxwell is greater... - I have lost the want for 3D 1080p monitor with G-Sync since the CES 2014. The 1440p and 4K monitors are coming to the gaming market - 1080p left to last generation... - Need a lot more power which hopefully Maxwell will offer for 3D gaming on 1440p monitors (hopefully coming sometime this year). I do not want SLI...just a single GPU, nothing more... - Maxwell will surely fulfill the performance required to power up and get the best out of Oculus Rift HD coming out this year. No thank you Kepler!

Source Sweet, a faster Athlon! I have a feeling Austin Evans will have a new favourite So they lowered the TDP but also lowered the performance. Why? Am I the only one that thinks this is pointless? Conclusion: We got a new Athlon X4, sweet for those who like gaming but are on a tight budget. I really don't think you should care about the new FX-8300 though, unless you really need 8 threads on a budget.
