A common cable included in modern modular PSUs are the 8-pin to 2x (6+2) pin PCI-e connector. Based on reading an 8-pin is effectively the same as a (6+2) pin. An 8 pin provides about 150W of power. If that's the case, then how can one 8-pin connector effectively supply 2x (6+2) pin connectors with 150 watt of power each? If a GPU requires about 300W of power, can I safely use an 8-pin to 2x (6+2) pin cables to connect the GPU. Ignoring the power from the PCI slot itself, this would either provide 150W of power (for the 8-pin connector facing the PSU) or 300W of power (for the 2 (6+2) pin connectors plugged into the GPU). On the surface, it appears as though it would only provide 150W of power, but why PSU makers would give an 8-pin to 2x (6+2) pin connector if it meant that each of the (6+2) pins could only provide half of the power as a normal 8-pin (150W). Since they're supposed to be functionally equivalent.

Hello, I am currently in the process of choosing parts for a new pc build. I would like to use Asus GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8 GB ROG STRIX GAMING OC for my GPU. It requires 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors. I'm also planning to vertically mount my GPU, i'm not sure if that affects anything here but just in case now you know. Now, the power supply I was originally planning to get is the Corsair RMx (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX. On the manual from the corsair website it shows that the 850w comes with 3 x 8-pin (6+2) but each of them split (is daisy-chainned the correct term?) making 6 connectors in total. Using this image that I found, it shows a setup for my scenario in which 2/3 8 pin connectors are being used. But then after doing research, people reccommend to seperate all three 8 pin cables - something to do with the wattage that each single 8 pin cable can allow needing to be enough, and splitting them just splits the wattage that the GPU can use (???). Therefore, the image is kind of contradicting the other advice if i am interpreting it right. This then lead me to look at power supplies that provide you with 3 x 8 pin PCIe (/ 6+2) in the box, but I couldn't seem to find any by the way I was looking for them. After that I started looking at replacement cables / extension cables / extra cables. People were saying don't buy cheap cables go for cablemod - but cablemod sells from one Australian store and they were sold out in most of the cables that I am trying to look for. l got even more frustrated because I then thought about if the PSU even had enough ports to fit an extra 8 pin, because if it did why wouldn't they just supply 3 x 8 pin in the first place?? Anyway, what I am looking for is a way to use the 3 x 8 pin 3070 ti that I want to get with a (preferably 850w) power supply - either that comes with the cables I need OR a solution for the cables - whether its being told that it's okay for me to stick with what they give me in the box OR cables that will work for my 3 x 8 pin situation. Thanks, Tom.

I'm building a new pc with a 3090 that requires two 8 pin connections. My gigabyte1000 psu only came with multiple 8 pin connector psu end going to 2X[6+2 pin] connectors on the output end. I've read some arguments regarding daisy chaining 8 pin connections and I'm not totally sure one way or another but I think I'd prefer to be cautious. So my question is, is it possible to use two of these cables but only use 1x 6+2 from each cable? (I realise that the aesthetic would be worse but I don't care about looks) [also I am open to being convinced to joined one side of the daisy chaining argument given sufficient evidence]

So I have a server motherboard and i need two 8 pin cpu connectors. I know that a cpu 8 pin is 4 ground 4 live. my 6 pin pcie is 3 ground 3 live, and i have 2 of them. so i was wondering that if i have it with one 6 pin is in and another 6 pin with only 2 of it connectors plugged in will it work. The wiring would be correct though with 3 ground + 3 live + 2 Ground + 2 live.

Whats the proper alternative for a PSU with no single 8 pin plug for a GPU power? (150-180~ish watts tdp) is it a 6+2 pin combo 6 pin to 8 pin adapter a molex to 8 pin adapter Others which one is safer or are they all safe? post your recommendations , Thanks

The name of this product escapes me and I cannot remember it for the life of me. It's a bracket you put on your graphics card which acts as an extender to "move" your 8 pin connector to the back of the card for cleaner cable management. I love photoshop but I've decided to illustrate the product in good ol MS Paint. Thanks in advance!

I just bought an asus strix rog 1080 ti. When I plugged it into my pc, it didn't power on. My pc works without it, but not with it. It has indicators that show if it is powered or not, and they were green. Despite them being green, I think that it is the power that is making it not work. I connected 2 8 pin connectors to it, but they both said cpu on them. Is that the correct 8 pin for it? Also, do I have the right connectors for it on my power supply? I have a corsair hx1000i.

In the moment of a sale I bought a GTX STRIX 1060 without checking if I can even run it, I found out I need an 8 Pin connector and I only have a 6 pin... I checked around to see what I could do and some recommended adapters but other said there was a risk involved and usually you are better off getting a new PSU... I was wondering if you guys could help me out because I'm not sure if I need a new PSU or I can stick with an adapter for my current power supply. This is my power supply. ~ Thanks guys!

Hi, I'm planning to build my new pc using Intel i5 7500 processor. I'm aiming to use either ASRock b250 pro4 or Asus Prime b250m A motherboard One thing that baffles me is the CPU power connector, the Asus one has 4 pins, the ASRock has 8 pins Is there a big difference between these two? Must I take this into account? Which is better, 4 or 8? And by the way I will not be over clocking Thank You

Hey, I'm upgrading my living room PC and allowing it to play games on it, previously it was a C2D E7500, pretty crap. So, i plan on upgrading it with under 100USD, (live in SG so under 150SGD). The X5450 is a Core 2 Quad Q9650 equivalent but it is better binned with the highest quality silicon and thus better overclocks and it's cheap as well. LGA 771 to 775 mod. Nice that the GTX 670 would come with a pre installed Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo! Also is it possible to use the 6/8 pin connectors from my 24/7 mining rig (which is why there is such a overkill PSU). My mining rig is currently only using ~650W or so. My main PSU only has one 6 pin. Will anything detrimental to the parts happen if the mining rig suddenly shuts off while i am gaming, must i plug out the 6/8 pin connectors to the mining PSU every time i am done using this PC. Thanks for your time. TL;DR can i use a power supply from a mining 24/7 rig to power my graphics card in this rig?

Today I bought a dell poweredge 2950 II rackmount server from a surplus store. I'm considering trying to put a graphics card in it, for which there are many hurtles. My main concern at the moment is getting power to the card though pice 6 and/or 8 pin power connectors. The front of the unit has hot swap bays for SAS hard drives, which I do not intend to use. powering the back plane for these tray is a 20 pin ATX power connector. Has anyone seen a conversion from ATX 20 pin to PCIe 6 or 8 pin power? if not seen, theoretically possible?

Hey all; Im not able to upgrade my PSU (Don't ask) I was wondering what is the most powerful GPU that has a 6 or 8 pin power connector? Thanks!

Hi Everyone, It's becoming more apparent that I'll be getting myself the i9-9900K processor and I'm planning to overclock it to as much as it can handle. I'll be getting the Gigabyte Aorus Master motherboard which is said to have 8+8 EPS 12V connectors. I was going for the following PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 850W but then I noticed it has only one 8-pin connector and another 4+4 connector, so I concluded I should get a different PSU and this seems like the only good (Tier 1) option I could find: Seasonic Prime Ultra 850W Titanium - Is this indeed the one I should go for?

Hi! I’ve got a Corsair RM850x PSU and ASUS Radeon 5700 XT GPU. Mentioned GPU have 8 pins and 6 pins power sockets. i currently have 8 to 8 pin cable + {6+2 pin} cables connected. Second one is connected to PCIe (8pin) port on PSU and just a 6 pins to GPU (the +2 pins are dangling near the GPU) and it don’t looks good ? I have plenty of 6 pins ports free on my PSU, but these are named “Peripheral & SATA”. I would want to get a 6 pin cable to power up my GPU without that “dangling +2”. Can I simply plug a 6 pin cable into one of those “Peripheral & SATA” ports on PSU? Or maybe I could buy a PCIe 8-pin to 6-pin cable (I don’t know if something like that exist)? OR maybe there is a different way of dealing with it, that I am not aware of? Any help greatly appreciated!

I have a GPU that requires an 8-pin PCIE connector. My PSU only has 2x 6pin power connectors. So I took my 8 pin PCIE power cable, took two pins off one side and plugged it into the PSU, and then plugged the 8 pin end into the GPU. Is this the correct way? edit: This is my GPU

Hello. I’m having trouble installing my graphics card. I am using this PSU and my card requires 8-pin PCIE power connection. I’m not sure if my PSU has the right connections for this. I have a 6–8 pin adapter, but it requires a 6-pin PCIE cable which I can’t seem to find on Amazon. Any ideas on how to go about this?

My PSU has 4 6+2 pin PCIe cables and my gpu requires both 8 pin and 6 pin. Can I just use the 6 pin part of the 6+2 cable for the 6 pin and use the 6+2 pin for the 8 pin?

Hello, I recently bought an MSI - Radeon RX 580 8 GB ARMOR MK2 OC GPU (certified refurbished only 140 :D). However, my PSU 8 pin connector is does not fit with it. Are there any adapters that I could buy to connect it? I couldn't find one. My PSU is an OCZ - ModXStream Pro 700 W 80+ Certified Semi-Modular ATX PSU, however, I am missing the red cables from it, since a refurbish. I tried looking up an adapter to change it, but couldn't find one. Trying to keep it cheap, I have amazon prime so if you find something on amazon, thankyou. Just need help either people telling me that im stupid and there is no such thing, there is a thing and i cant find one, or that just go buy this psu that has it. The PSU pins are https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/437807061930082314/516385710735884348/image0.jpg The GPU pins arehttps://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/437807061930082314/516385861579964436/image0.jpg Are there any sort of 8 pin adapters or should i just buy a new PSU? Thanks

I was looking to upgrade my computer and looking at some motherboards and saw that some motherboards have two 8 pin connectors for the cpu however my power supply only has one 8 pin connector. I was wondering does the motherboard need both of the 8 pin connectors to fully power the cpu? Or am I good with just one 8 pin connector?

Hey everyone! I hope you are all doing well! I am new to both PC building as well as the forums so please forgive any mistakes in terminology and any rookie errors I may make! I recently decided to upgrade my pre-built PC that I've had for a long time. The first stop on my upgrade journey was the graphics card. I upgraded from an ASUS GT740 2GB to an MSI RX570 GAMING X 4GB. In this, I made the mistake of not first checking my PSU for the correct connectors. The Gaming X needs a single 8-pin connector and my PSU (Cooler Master RS-500-PCAR-I3) only has a 6 pin and a 4 pin. I then noticed that I had two molex female connectors open. Herein lies the first part of my question. As a temporary solution, could I use a molex to 8-pin adapter to power my GPU? Will this be safe for a temporary fix? I’ve heard of these adapters melting before and I just want to hear a more experienced builder’s advice on the given situation. I plan to order a new PSU this weekend anyway, but I want to use my PC while I wait for delivery (should only take a week). Therefore, my second question concerns PSUs as I previously stated, I intend to upgrade. According to the most notorious PSU wattage calculators online, my current usage is around 380W. From my research I have found that a 550W PSU would be a safe bet. I am aiming for a Corsair CX550M as I’ve found a good deal for it locally (the more local business I can provide, the better in the current state of the world). I am also planning on upgrading the other components of my PC throughout the rest of this year and the predicted usage is apparently around 450W. My current and prospective builds will be below. I also find it necessary to state that I do not plan on ever trying 4K gaming, 144 FPS, or any such extremities. All I want, is to casually play games at Med-High settings at 1080P 60FPS, as well as be able to occasionally render videos in Adobe Premiere and use Pro Tools daily for hours on end. I also do not plan on upgrading the prospective rig any further as I doubt I will need to (in the next few years that is). One last note, I am currently a Law student and I work part-time as a session musician. I am also spending a multitude of resources on improving my physical health. Thus, money is relatively tight and I would thoroughly appreciate the avoidance of advice containing unattainable extremes (i.e. please refrain from telling me I should buy a 9900K and a 1200W PSU, as this would not fit my situation in any way, shape or form). Current Build: I5 3470 @ 3.2 GHz MSI RX570 GAMING X 4GB Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV Kingston DDR3 RAM 8GB @ 1600 MHz Cooler Master RS-500-PCAR-I3 2 WD Blue 1TB HDD @ 7200RPM Prospective Build: AMD Ryzen 2700X @ 4.3 GHz MSI RX570 GAMING X 4GB MSI A320M-A Pro MAX ATX AMD Wraith Cooler Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM 2x8GB @ 3200 MHz Corsair CX550M PSU 2 WD Blue 1 TB HDD @ 7200RPM Kingston SSD 512GB (This build was recommended by a friend and trusted technician at a gaming PC store for my needs and long-term budget). Thank you so much for reading this Ken Follet novel of a question and I appreciate any advice at all! Stay safe!
