I've come to the conclusion that the i9s, with their thermal-pasted heat-spreaders are just not worth the headache they would be to cool. I need every bit of performance that the i9 7980XE appears to offer on paper, but living in a hot climate with no air conditioning, I likely couldn't even get stock performance under sustained multi-threaded workloads due to thermal-induced throttling. Unless, just maybe, Intel learns from the fiasco that is the i9 7900X (IMO) and solders the newer 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-core CPUs to their heat-spreaders. Does anyone have an informed opinion on how likely that is? Is it a complete pipe dream that those CPUs will be useful to anyone outside of Greenland and Antarctica? -
Since today's the day of the news embargo lift, another der8auer video appeared on YouTube, showing the German professional overclocker managed to oc the Intel i9-7980XE to over 6.1 GHz on all 18 cores, of course only possible through liquid nitrogen cooling on an ASUS Rampage 6 Apex. He and the other overclockers came together for a meet-up in Taiwan at ASUS ROG headquarters and reached some new world records, once again. https://youtu.be/rEdXayoA1Es

I have the tower 900. I am getting a 7980xe, I want to go nuts with this build, and lots of rgb. I know threadripper exists. I am using x299 because of work reasons. I have a 1080 artic storm. I don't really need gpu horsepower. But, I want to know about fittings, cables, fans, led strips, pump/res. Ect... I currently have a soft tube build that i can use 2 sata 240gb ssds, a 3tb hdd, an ax1200, and some rad. I am going to grab a rampage vi extreme snd tge ek monoblock What i need help with I need fittings Led strips Fans rgb maybe A 540mm rad Coolant Pcie m.2 ssd, not sure on size. Need to have vms Cables that are long enough Rgb res/pump(I have 2 ddc pumps curently but the res wont work with what i want. I want a tube res) Second gpu maybe Rgb ram 64gb I live in us, my budget for the above excluding cpu, mb, ek block, case is $3800usd. It is not fixed. Oh I also will probably delid. I do very cpu bound things and I do not need ecc.

As the Hot things get hot saga continues, WCCF gets word of the 7980XE's first overclock on water. So, the 7980XE, which many doubt would hold its boost clock without resorting to extremes as far as water loops are concerned, hit 4.8GHz in WCCF's article, and while staying at a chilly 90c. Nothing short of incredible, and unbelievable by literal definition should Intel still be using Dow Corning paste as the 7980XE's TIM. Of course, expecting this on even a triple 120mm is something worthy of the loonie bin. With the vCore peaking at 1.25v, it's looking to be a fairly typical per core power draw. But those 18 cores have got to suck up the juice, so we're still talking scary large amounts of amps and watts, and likely, toasty VRMs in a hopeful scenario. Dual PSU systems, anyone? The FireStrike score is impressive at first glance. But without running the stock preset, the end results are likely to hide performance scaling or to keep the 7980XE cooler for the duration of the bench run. Interesting if true. But I sincerely doubt that this is real, or anywhere near what we can expect from some of our more involved enthusiasts. And naturally, it's hot. I really want to ditch my oversized computer case ( The tower 900 ) I currently have a dual loop connected for the cpu / gpu. My next build must be smal. Quick connect hoses, etc... Alphacool his chiller 2000, anyone have one and can give me some advice? My hardware for now: 7980xe 2080ti Rampage 6 apex x299 32gb 3600 cl15 ..

Hi, I've been trying hard to find the 7980XE, but it seems out of stock everywhere. I'm in Netherlands / EU and importing it from USA costs about 400 on import taxes, so that's not really a good option. Does anyone know where I can still buy it?

So at last I'm getting close to getting a 7980XE... but now I'm starting to become really, really afraid with shivers and all. There's no way to get it delidded without attempting it myself, which is absolutely insane... consider I've never even built a pc before. and how exactly is the cpu without it? if it's completely useless I shouldn't buy it, but before that the only thing I could think of worth getting would be those speculated 16-core 3850X Ryzen,, which nothing is known of, no benchmarks or anything just a rumor. It may be 2020 before the new workstation platforms are out ...right? So what options are left then besides 7980XE... The 9980XE has been a failure for all i know and what's left is TR 2950X, 2990WX those are both outperformed by this intel And getting a cpu + motherboard only to replace it with Ryzen? That was my plan for a while, until realizing how ridiculous it may be, especially if I would get the 9900K that with 8 cores and 64GB ram doesn't really serve as a good workstation... so if I'm planning to buy something and sell/replace it later, what options are there in that case? Yes I'm in a rush, I'm stuck sitting with an old laptop and it feels like it won't last for that long either... on top of that I got several pc parts already including 2080Ti graphics card, 2 M.2 SSDs and the corsair 570X crystal case.. these items i bought last year will just be sitting here. So I feel like I'm doing really stupid things ongoing. Maybe it's true that I want a delidded 7980XE but how am I expecting to get that done.. magic? I can buy the tools but I can't buy experience, skills and courage I need wisdom

Also: It seems like the AXi Pro Mesh Cablemod kit doesn't work with the AX1600i, it seems like u have to buy the RMi/RMx set, what a bummer.

Alright so I’m wanting to get the 7980xe and I don’t plan on overclocking so could I just use an asrock taichi with it because that’s the cheapest board for x299 that I saw with good reviews so I was wondering if it would be ok to use with the 7980xe.

Hey guys, my first post here and I hoped that you would be willing to help me assebmle this beauty I am building I have been following builds for quite a long time but this is the first time I would love to assemble this myself - and would love to make it right! Computer is aimed for 3D Rendering - and high speeds of everything. So here it is so far: Intel 7980XE /Highest possible OC/ Alphacool Eisbaer 280 Asus Rampage VI Apex G.Skill 64GB 3200MHz (4x16GB, F4-3200C14Q-64GTZ) /Highest possible OC/ 4x Intel 760p NVME SSD 1TB RAID0 in VROC NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti 11GB Corsair HX1000i NZXT S340 Elite /with removed cable shroud bar to fit EATX/ So I would love to ask and verify if this build is going to work all together. I checked and verified what I could - but would love to double check. Is 4TB VROC going to work? Is each M.2 NVME going to have 4 PCIE lines? So overall performance is going to be over 10GB/s? Is case going to work okay with all parts? Any suggestion welcome. Thanks! :)) UPDATE1: By reading Rampage VI Apex information - I guess its not possible to get 4 NVMEs to RAID0. Also there is only 4 PCIe lines for each DIMM.2 - right? I may need to buy Asus Hyper M.2 Expansion card. So then - I may buy less expensive Asus X299 Card - but there are these VRM problems - what is the current state of VRM temperatures? Is it fixed in lower Asus Mobos? Liquid cooling with EK block is too expensive.

Hi Folks, I'm new here but a computer tinker for my whole life, except the overclocking part, reason why I came to this forum. I was looking at the 7980xe and found a great deal of $1200 for it so I started planning; Ordered a x299 R VI Apex and looking over RAM and on the QVL list found a few "cheap" 4x8 DIMMs at 3-3200Mhz, particularly from corsair, like the dominator platinum or the RGB ones. The only problem is my lack of overclocking knowledge, where I would like the forum's help: If I go for, let's say 3000Mhz, will I be able to overclock this RAM over it's XMP profile, to 3800 or above? I know overclocking shouldn't be done if you're not experienced, but I have the PC know-how and did some OC (but couldn't pass 2999) on my ryzent 1700x + trident Z RGB 3200Ram (attached pictures that I found) - mainly because I liked the ram but didn't use the QVL though I didn't find it listed there. I recently replaced my 3930k rig with a 7980xe build. Also replaced the triple HD monitors with triple 4K. They all work together over the local network to render 3d stuff. Added a few pics of the gradual 5-year process of me building these so you don't assume I bought this all at once.
