Before we start you need to look at yourself if you need to tell me that old processors aren't as fast as newer ones. I have 2 lenovo A70 systems they're old but have 4gb ram each, theyre towers with PCIE support so very modular, run cool and quiet, support windows 10 & 11(microsoft have issues) and have gigabit ethernet. There is enough here for a decent desktop experience but modern games, some productivity software and WEB BROWSERS will choke on this budget pentium cpu as well as windows 10 background tasks. The one thing I wont attempt is using old storage when basic SSDs are so cheap, the system supports sata 2 which is plenty for a responsive system. Theres a Kioxia 240gb ssd dangling in the below photo but it will be getting a 3d printed bracket. E5800 pentium performance in 2023 The system was really unresponsive with 90% or 100% cpu utilisation browsing the web. The geekbench score of 382 single core and 618 multicore nails the performance issue here. The mod Its possible to use old xeon 771 chips in core 2 duo/quad era motherboards often going from single/dual core 65nm chips to full blown 45m quad core chips that can overclock to 4ghz. The mod requires a bios patched with xeon microcodes, a taped sticker on the cpu pins and either the motherboard alignment pins cut out with a 18mm snap off knife or pre modded cpu from china. As I already own an x5460 I found premodded bios files for my system and flashed them via windows. This youtuber modded the bios, I tried to do patch myself but couldnt get the patcher to recognise a current Lenovo .rom file. Install As I was feeling traditional after dissaseembly I dropped my new cpu onto the socket pins. Using a microscope and steel soldering tweezers the one bent pin got mostly bent back. A cmos reset was required without it posted but wouldnt get to windows. Cmos reset by removing the CR2032, unplugging hdmi and mains cable then holding the power button. Cooling Its really obvious that this system needed new thermal paste on the cpu, northbridge, southbridge and gpu but I think we forget how bad modern cooling can be. Even though the system came with only a 65w pentium chip the system still came as standard with a bulky aluminium heatsink and thick modular fan and fully supports my 120w xeon cpu. The experience Using this system is night and day better its so much more responsive and doesnt get become unresponsive from windows update or anti virus scans. Browsing the internet is responsive and video playback works in HD. Booting the computer is much faster with 16.4 seconds to the windows login screen or 20 seconds to desktop. The new geekbench score with a 10.7% imrovement in single core performance thanks to the extra cache on the premium xeon and 90% improvement in multicore performance. The caveat The old geforce 8400 graphics card is lacking while its got some video accleration in the form of 'second generation PureVideo HD' for h264 which DOES improve playback in vlc, youtube uses vp9 and seems to be moving back to that from av1, while I can playback 4k30 content at 84% utilisation its not a zero impact thing like on a 12th gen system with vp9 acceleration. Alternatives The 3.16ghz xeon x5460 is about the best cpu you can expect to pickup at a reasonable price but other options like the intel 2.8ghz q9505, q9500 and q9550 or 2.66ghz q9400 share a similar used price and cache and if you're using a non oem mobo its not unreasonable to overclock those cpus to well beyond the 3.16ghz I achieved. Yes its easy to pickup better samples but its the used market and depends on your area. Lenovo_ThinkCentre A70_L-IG41M2_BIOS_MOD.zip

Hi everyone I don't understand why but my PC runs incredibly slowly with 8GB RAM. When I switch it to 6GbB (from 4x2 to 3x2) it works fine. I've tried different RAM configs (different slots, different brands, different speeds) but it makes no difference. This is really frustrating because I do want to be able to use at least 8GB. The board is Gigabyte P35 DS4 (lga 775) and should support 8gb of ddr2. I can't reflash the bios because the flash utility thinks I have the file on a floppy disk but the computer doesn't even have a floppy drive and i can't change it in the settings. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

So, new guy here. 11.11 is about came, so I planning to upgrade my old stock HFS on my 775. Roughly for a month(since10.10) I was thinking to get a slim and low profile HFS. after I went throu site by site and forum by forum, i found 1 that i really like it. Noctua NH-L9I. A slim and low profile HFS that mainly used by mini itx users that prefer a tiny pc desktop. As i put the item on my bucket list, i began to search tutorial of installing this guy(NHL9I) on my old pal(775). but i found out that this HFS unfit to installed on 775, even with bracket. my question is, does anyone knew some tutorial to install safely or a bit of mod so i could use em? thanks

I want to do a build with the lga 771 to 775 mod. I like the x5460 and i want to know one or a few compatible motherboards, been looking for answers.

Hey guys, I have a micro atx case and board here (socket 775) but i absolutely hate the plastic clip mounting system on the stock coolers. I'm not sure how much room I have, i'll have to measure up, but i have about 1cm room above a fat stock cooler. What would you guys say is the best out there? p.s. It needs to be rated for at least 95W as well (Q8300) Thank You in Advance

So i remember hearing/being told Ram wasnt really a bottleneck however i saw this Video the other day right now im running a Q9400, overclocked to 3.6ghz (450FSB). my rams running at 900mhz with 8gb, i was considering upgrading to 1066mhz ram so i could overclock higher safely (ifi could get it on the cheap). i was wondering if my ram would be a big bottleneck. im running it with a gtx 970 (i know my GPU is bottlenecked to hell, my FX pc crapped out so i scrapped together a beautiful 775 rig from various sources while i wait for Zen) im basicly hopping to max out the performance out of this,as a hobby, and for performance

I have bought and installed xeon x5450 on my gigabyte motherboard that is originally 775 socket. After following a guide and putting a sticker on my processor and assembling the computer, i noticed it won't launch windows installer. I have a new ssd and only RAM and motherboard are from the old PC but it won't show me anything other than blue windows logo. BIOS detects and recognizes xeon, but i still can't install windows on my PC. Is there a way i can get past this problem and have a working machine or am I doomed to stick to my old CPU? Thanks in advance

I recently got a used evga nforce 790i and looking to put a good cpu in it, I wanted to get a core 2 quad q9650 but being $150 or up its out of my price range. the Xeon e5650 is the same processor just as a 771 socket and only cost $20-$30. So I'm curious if my mobo will support the mod and if not what's the next best cpu I can get.

A couple of months ago I put together a test bench that I could use for testing old hardware from my eBay business. It consisted of a Pentium 4@2.66Ghz, 2GB of DDR RAM and an Nvida FX 5200 graphics card. It was pretty crap, but all the parts came in a joblot so I just had to slot everything in and I was good to go. Here's a picture of it if you're interested (WinXP ftw): However last month I decided to give it an upgrade, so I bought a cheap 775 motherboard off eBay that came with a dual core CPU (It was nothing special, just a cheap foxconn board and a pentium dual core). When I bought that motherboard I remembered watching a video about a 771 to 775 mod that allowed you to use some of the older Xeon CPUs in consumer 775 motherboards, and I had the intention of replacing the pentium with a quad core Xeon later down the line. In the end though I ended up buying the Xeon (an X5450) and the converter sticker on the same day. When all the parts arrived it didn't take long to put it all together. The most nerve-racking part was cutting the tabs on the CPU socket so that the Xeon would fit. It took me a couple of tries but eventually I cut enough off (A quick tip if you plan on doing this mod is to buy a cheap 775 CPU (I just used the pentium dual core) to use as a guide, so if you do screw up all you risk losing it a cheap CPU). After putting the converter sticker on the CPU (The mod requires a sticker to short some pins on the CPU for it to work), I slotted it in the motherboard, put on the cooler and... it didn't boot. I proceeded to waste several hours wondering why (I even brought in a projector from the other room and had that set up as it was the only other portable display I had that had VGA), but eventually I found out that it was my own stupidity. I had put the sticker on upside down - *facepalm*. So after putting on a new sticker the right way round (Thank god I bought two), the system booted up! (Yay). Currently It's still just sitting on a motherboard box, but I plan to get/make a test-bench case at some point in the future. Here's the full spec list if you're interested: CPU: Intel Xeon X5450 GPU: Whatever's lying around, currently an Nvidia 6200LE RAM: 1.5GB of DDR2 (I desperately need to buy more RAM) Motherboard: Foxconn G31MXP 775 Motherboard PSU: Generic Dell 250W Power Supply HDD: 80GB IDE Maxtor Hard drive (I'm gonna get an SSD at some point, this was just the only drive I had at the time) OS: Windows 7 Other: There's a sound blaster card in there at the moment, but I was just testing that out. And here's some pictures: So yeah, that's my testbench. It's pretty bad, and the cabling is a mess (Not much I can really do about that atm, and the PSU has really short cables so it's hard to manage them at all), but it does what I need it to do. The main things I want to do to it next are: Buy an SSD Get more RAM Change the GPU Buy a new power supply Change the motherboard Anyway, if you read this far, then thanks for taking a look! I'd love hear your feedback and also to see your test-benches (I'm sure they're better than mine)

hello, recently i had made a really funny(and a bit masochistic) xeon+775 build with an old gigabyte board and a x5470 xeon, evrything worked fine execpt the fact that we had an 8gb limit,so just recently i got hold of an p5q-vm mobo and some 4x4gb killsre ram ,the mobo was tested in front of our eyes as well as the ram ,so non working parts are out of the question. the problem is that now with evrything put toghether (mobo +ram+x5470+gpu) the pc doesnt post...cmos clearing didnt help..even got to the point that it would power on/off by it selve ..please help! also after a bit of tinkiring even an old 2 duo wont give post(cant check the bios version).. so im all out of ideas specs:p5q-vm killsre 4x4gb x5470 xeon thermaltake 550 watt psu gtx 1060 6gb(asus)

Hey, Thanks for visiting! So, let me set the scene for everybody to make this as clear as possible because im stuck for ideas. I have just finished building my Q6600 system with a HD 6850 and because i hated it, bought a GTX 970 Windforce Edition. Motherboard spat out either error codde 56 or 5b, no idea what it was because it could go either way, when my 970 was in so i recently ordered an XFX eForce 680i Mobo to hopefully diagnose this issue and let me have my 970 to make even CS:GO on my 900p moniter playable (slightly overkill upgrade for this game but hey, i got a nice deal). Assuming my new Mobo works great i might keep t for a while but if it doesn't I need a CPU upgrade path as im sure the 970 works as the windforce logo lights up but it freezes on the Abit BIOS screen (Forgot to mention my Current mobo im upgrading from is a Abit AW9D). Quite frankly my cpu is a huge bottleneck and i have no idea what is the best way to upgrade on a budget. As im 13 I hope to get alot of money from both Christmas and my Birthday (Who doesn't?) and i might be able to pull everything together to make a full CPU+RAM+Mobo upgrade on a fair budget. Pretty much all I want to know is what Intel and AMD upgrade paths are worth it over a Q6600 and what could work on a moderate budget but I really dont know what that budget could be. Thanks for reading this far and I would love a reply as im lost in what to do in my current situation.

So I have an older Pentium 4 HT PC I got from someone, and I got to wondering if it's possible to use it as a 771 Xeon build instead? It's a prebuilt computer so I don't know the motherboard type or anything off the top of my head, but with a Pentium 4 HT and a Windows Vista original OS, I wondered if it's possible to use a quad core Xeon, or how I would go about finding one that would work? I'm not too worried about the actual mod (I can use the P4 to protect the pins while I use an art knife to cut the guides, and get the sticker needed) but I just don't know how the compatibility works out with this stuff. Never really modded anything like this before and I figured this was a good, CHEAP way to do so. Thanks in advance

Hi, I have a old pc with 775 chipset yea ik why the F*#% would i put a 1070 in a old pc yes yes ik bottleneck all that stuff i just want to know if it will actually work without breaking the gpu , mobo the gpu will either be Msi 1070 or Asus thanks in advanced and once again ik its stupid and dumb but please just answer the question

Hi guys, So... I bought a really crappy old PC earlier this weekend, not to use really just as a project more than anything else. The basic specs are: * MSI MS-7301 Motherboard - Also known as MSI Cuba? (Running modded BIOS V3.16 which I flashed myself in an attempt to fix this issue). * ATI X1650 SE 256MB Graphics Card (I'm trying to upgrade to an MSI GTX 660, I've checked the BIOS version of the card and it is non-uefi so should run fine on this legacy motherboard?). * 4GB of some random RAM (2*2GB). * 600W PSU (I upgraded). * Intel Core 2 Duo 6800 Extreme (Upgraded myself from an Intel Core 2 Duo 6200, works perfectly!). * 500GB HDD (Boot drive running Windows 10 Home). The issue I'm having when I try to install the new graphics card is the PC powers on but won't display anything and I get the beep code 1 long 2 short typical of a GPU problem... I've tried the same PC with a GTX 750Ti I borrowed from my brother and same result... But as soon as I put the old X1650 back in the PC boots perfectly fine. Here are the steps I've taken so far: * Flashed latest modded BIOS I could find. * Tried multiple (newer) GPUs. Both with and without external power. * Checked for UEFI BIOS on GTX 660 (It doesn't have one). Any insight would be great I'm a bit lost now as surely this should work?, many people online are saying the GTX 660 is the best GPU available for legacy motherboards. Thank you for your time! Shane.

Sorry for simplified English. Now it is time, I need to build my personal NAS server. But I do not wanted spend any rubles on this build, because I have enough scrap parts. So there is tree ways to approach my goal. The fast and simple solution. Raspberry Pi B3+ (not exactly a scrap) Advantages: good software, fast build, power efficient, rational. Disadvantages: USB 2.0 Power limitations to HDD, in best scenario you can connect maximum 1 HDD, other HDD needs power supply The fast and simple solution 2. Old netbook ASUS 1015BX Advantages: more good software fo x86 architecture, fast build, almost power efficient, almost rational. Disadvantages: 2GB of ram, USB 2.0, only 2 HDD maximum, One in direct SATA connection to motherboard, and another via USB, need to build case, I only have single motherboard. Not fast, not rational way. Build NAS from 775 socket parts. Advantages: no limitations in software, 4 SATA HDD. I can use quad core CPU or simple Celeron. Disadvantages: Not power efficient, not silent, not cool. I will try all of these. And will tell about them in this post. Which one build you wanna see first, or maybe you have some advices for me? teaser photo: "the scrap parts" silent 1015bx notebook.

So I'm repairing my grandparents PC and though I'd upgrade the drives to a faster SSD. I've installed Win 10 using other PC (It would take ages on the old 775 PC) and now I'm trying to figure out how to boot. Bios detects SSD, tried IDE/SCSI modes, native/legacy modes nothing worked. Should I rather reinstall the Windows using the 755 socket PC? Also maybe installing MOBO drivers using the other PC could help? (Dont really know if the system has to have installed SATA drivers or not to boot..)

Hi guys, I need your advise on this one. I was using a msi x58 Pro e with a e5640 until yesterday, when the board stopped working for no reason. I tried pretty much everything but regardless of what I do I’m not able to get a signal. I still have an Asus dsv-d with 2 l5420s but the performance in games isn’t that great to be honest, and now I’m asking myself whether I should buy 2 x5460s (and some more ram as i only have 4gb atm) as an upgrade or a new x58 board. (Which are pretty expensive here in Germany although I saw a deal for 90€ for the exact same board) Thanks for your advice guys.

Hi. Before I've bought a new GPU I was using the Quadro 600 and I've had an overclock on the Xeon processor from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz and it was running pretty much good. About a week ago I bought a new GT 1030 OC 2GB from Gigabyte (https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1030OC-2GI#kf) and after replacing it, the computer posted, but there was no display output. I've resetted the CMOS and I've had an output, but every time I try to overclock the CPU, there is no output, even when I just do from 2.66GHz to 2.7GHz. This also happens even when I put my old Core 2 Duo E7300 and trying to overclock it. When plugging the cable to VGA I have an output. So the main problem: When the overclock is enabled, I have no display output, but pc posts, when disabled or plugged in to integrated gpu, I have an output. Any help? Specs: Processor: Intel Xeon E5430 @ 2.66GHz Board: Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L with Xeon Microcode RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury DDR2 2x2GB 1066MHz Graphics Card: Gigabyte GT 1030 OC 2G PSU: Powerman 300W SFX

Hello! I tried to mod my motherboard (HP Ipiel-la3 https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01746799) so it could take a faster LGA 771 Xeon, even though it is LGA 775. This did not work out, but that is mostlikely because I did not install the microcode for the Xeon. Before I waste all of my thermal paste, has anybody ever owned this motherboard and modded it? I highly doubt it, but it is worth the ask.

So I have an old machine that I want to know more about upgrading, and if it's even worth it. The computer is an HP Compaq 500b MT. I know there are different variations, so I'll just include what it has in it (from stock or by upgrading). It has a Foxconn 2A8Ch with a G41 Chipset, 4GB of Dual Channel "400MHz" DDR3 RAM (so I'm guessing it's 800MHz DDR3, and 2x2GB is the most the Mobo allows). A 160GB WD Drive and a 320GB Samsung Drive (both HDD). And a GPU I had from an old Sony Vaio, which has 128MB of DDR (the name is strange, according to Speccy it's an ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050) which I'm mainly using for the DVI port. As for the CPU it's packing a Pentium E5400 Dual Core at 2.7GHz. This is where my question lies, I want to upgrade from a dual core to a quad core, but I want to know how much of a difference it will make, if it's worthwhile (and if so, what C2Q to get), and if it's even compatible. I have looked around and found very little information on this PC or this motherboard so anything helps. Thanks in advance!
