Hi all! I am having this weird issue, well what I think is an issue with some brand new hard drives. I recently bought 2x Seagate Barracuda 6TB hard drives (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/47556/seagate-barracuda-6tb-st6000dm003-3-5in-hard-drive) They seem to make this weird sound I have tried to catch in the video. It seems to happen every 5 seconds or so, even at idle, then it will stop for a bit and then happen again. It might be hard to hear in the video so you will need to turn it way up but in person it is definitely quite loud. I am not sure if this is cause for concern in terms of them actually being faulty or just me being paranoid. I recently had 2x 4TB Seagate Barracuda's, one of which died and I sold the other to my friend, and they didn't seem to have this weird sound. These 4TB drives lasted a few years. Even if this isn't cause for concern, is there a reason for the noise? And can I somehow stop it? Because it's not like its happening when it is being accessed. Even completely idle it does it. Hi everyone, SOLVED: Turns out it was a dodgy SATAT cable. Strange that it only seemed to be one drive and not both, and only in one specific directory but nevertheless I am happy the problem has been found. I am having a very weird issue that I just can't seem to find a fix for. So I bought a couple of 6 TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives (brand new), and one of them seems to be possibly dying, but no software seems to show any indicator of it dying. I do have all the data backed up so data recovery isn't an issue. I went to clip a video on my PC and it was saved to my main SSD boot drive, and the file can be opened and viewed just fine. I then moved it to the drive in question in a specific folder. From then on whenever I even tried to open the folder, it would take FOREVER to load all the files in, and all the thumbnails and the file I just created would not open. It didn't error out or anything, it would just open in VLC media player and be a black screen. I thought that the file was broken, but I then moved the exact file to an external hard drive and that file works perfectly and the directory doesn't take long at all to load. It did however freeze the Windows explorer everytime I tried to open any file within that directory, so I deleted the folder and copy pasted it from my backup to the drive that does work back onto that drive and same thing. It would freeze Windows Explorer and then my screen would go black for a second and then come back and Windows Explorer would crash. I tried unplugging and replugging in the drive, and doing a quick format but I can't even format it as it just won't complete the format at all, and I checked the Task Manager for activity (see attached picture) and it constantly like this whether it is idle or being 'formatted'. So now I have a drive that has no partition on it as the format has failed. I also used Crystal Disk Info to see if it can detect anything bad (see screenshot) and as far as I can tell it seems ok? I don't really know how to interpret all the numbers and such but it says it is 'Good'. Please let me know if there is something within CDI I am missing. I have not dropped or caused any physical damage to the drive in any way and as you can tell from the CDI screenshot it is quite new. I am not too concerned about data loss as I have back ups but I would love to find out if there is something I can do to fix it. I did have a question about the drives making a clicking sound which they still do every now and then which has happened since I got them which I made a forum post about. See below for more details. Hello, I am building a web server for deployment at my own house, I have a line run specifically for this purpose which was cheaper than a datacenter's rental fee and shared speed. I've decided to go with the following list of part's: (Prices are Newegg, I can only use my line of credit.) ASRock Tachi x370 (170$) AMD 1800x (239$) -- The 1700x was 10$ more! NXZT H440 Midtower Case (110$) DDR4-3000 16GB Memory from a QVL (i'll overclock the RAM) EVGA 500w Power Supply (Modular) **IF Required RX 570 Video Card 1TB Crucial SSD for OS (Will Run CentOS 7) Now when it comes to hard drives, I have a choice, 4x4TB Toshiba Enterprise Hard Drives, or wait for a deal on 6TB HGSTs and up. I won't use Seagate I've just had to much bad luck with them even their new Ironwolf Pro's I've had to send 3 back after a week of use because drives started disappearing and re-appearing in the BIOS on reboot's I ran Seatools and they failed SMART and had bad sectors so I'm not going to even deal with them. I'll stick with what I know works and what I like and can afford Now I got 3 HGSTs 6TB's on sale about six weeks ago and I plan to add 4 more if they do go on sale, however, I have six of these 4TB Toshiba Enterprises which are 94$ a lot better than the 6TB's price wise and warranty wise. What RAID card would you recommend for drives 6TB+ because for all I know I might put nothing but 12TB's in it and expand it out as time goes buy. I don't plan to put all the drives in at once. When it comes to RAID level's I want to do a RAID 5. 5E, I'll be running ffmpeg a lot due to video compression/conversion for mobile to 260p/360p/480p/640p/720p/1080p and 2160p. I do so many of these because not everyone can yet fully watch a video in as fast speeds. What would be the best card, and affordable I'm looking to spend no more than 150-200$ on it. I'm on a limited budget for this site so i'm taking drives from computers are replacing them with other older drives I had. Also I can only get this card through Newegg. I'm sorry but that's where my line of credit is. Thank you for any help you may provide. Please do not ask me why I chose the CPU/Board/RAM/Case/PSU I have my reasons.

Hey guys, Should I pick WD Black or Gold for my new build? They both cost the same here.

As the title says. How are the Ironwolf disks? I've always went with WD myself mostly because of brand loyalty, but my main HDD has been a 2TB Seagate drive for a while now and I've never had problems with it. The Ironwolfs are a little cheaper compared to the WD Reds (only ~15 euros however though). I've come across some stories about Seagate drives and failures, but I'm not sure how much of that to believe. Which one would you get?

Hi Guys. ive been running Unraid for a couple of years on my Zotac motherboard, with a mix of 1.5 and 2TB disks, ofcause with a lovely 2TB disk as parity. Anyhow, im in the unfortunate situation that a 2TB ST2000DM001 has died, and im now on the lookout for a replacement. Since the prices of 2TB disks dont really make sense, ive been considering starting to grow my array over time with 4 or 6TB disks (im at 10TB used and growing... video Library... yaaay), but i am unsure if my motherboard supports disks larger than 2 TB. Anyone have any insights to the wierdness that is an Atom Based NM10 chipset running on a DTX board :-)

Currently, a X300 5TB hard drive costs $151 at Micro Center and I'm totally tempted to get it, plus I can reach a MC store via transit. Based on experience, the 1TB Toshiba laptop hard drive inside my PS3 is still alive and reliable after a year, but when it comes to desktop hard drives, people like it and don't. Currently, my PC just needs an archive HD, nothing too fancy. Anyone have input with this series of internal hard drives??

Hi I need abit of help. Im planning my freenas build... I think im going to use 3x6TB WD REDs in RaidZ1 would this be ok considering there 6TB in RaidZ1? I dont know how well RaidZ1 works with 6TB Drives? Also Would i be able to use 4x6TB RaidZ1? I dont see the point in using 4x6TB RaidZ2 so i thought 3x6TB RaidZ1 made more sense.

Japanese Media Akiba PC reported, Hitachi's 6TB helium-filled harddrive is now available in Japan, with limited supply (as parallel import goods), for around 60000-64000 yen, which is around $USD528-625. This drive is an enterprise-class 3.5" hard drive, has both SATA and SAS version, 7200 rpm and 64MB cache. Since this drive is now be available in Japan, it should be available in other countries soon.
