My cousin had an issue with the his computer locking up while streaming on some sites, also occurred on sites with auto playing video adds. He tried to reinstall windows, and then he asked me to fix it up. He also complained the system was very hot and it did thermal shut down on him a couple times I also set him up with kodi I've narrowed it down to the GPU Saphire Radeon 6870 I can reliably recreate the freeze up, but I can't figure out why it is happening or what could be doing it. The issue I have scene: The computer will freeze up. The image on the screen remains, the system is still powered up, numlock does not respond mouse does not move and so on. Kodi 17.1 there is no picture or audio when the video loads but the counter is moving, Relevant Specs: AMD 965BE Asus M5A88V-EVO corsair vengeance DDR3 2x4gb Saphire Radeon 6870 Corsair TX850 PSU For trouble shooting purposes: The system was full of dust, it was bad. I was surprised he didn't fry the cpu or gpu. FIrst thing I did was blow out the dust I put new thermal paste on the CPU I reinstalled windows updates and most recent drivers for everything on the system, issue still occurring I replaced the power supply issue still occurring reinstalled windows again this with the bare minimum updates to get Kodi 17.1 working and a latest gpu drivers, issue still occurring Tried older drivers still occurs I put R7 370 in the system, ran Kodi 17.1 it worked perfect, ran some furmark, prime 95, for over an hour system is perfectly stable I put the 6870 back in run furmark and prime 95s all around test for 2 hours system is fine no issues. Start up Kodi 17.1 system freezes or there is no picture or audio when the video loads but the counter is moving, When you try to move forward you get a frame with video then the system locks up. Kodi 16.1 works perfect no freezing, I let youtube play videos for a hour no freezing. He has it back and will let me know if it continues to happen and what sites it is happening on. What I would like to know is this. Is there something in the gpu or on the pcb that relates specifically to video pay back that may have been damaged by over heating that may be related to how some video codecs or programs interact with the hardware decoding of the video??? That the only thing I can think of. Since it appears to work perfect with version 16.1 of kodi I'm wondering if its a new standard or something.

Ok so I have: - Phenom II x4 955 at 3.8GHz - AMD HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 - Gigabyte GA-770T-D3L (which is in horrendous shape) - PSU 500w which is not a no-name (can't remember the name right now, but it's decent) - 8GB HyperX 1866 MHz RAM I wanted to buy RX 470 and was wondering how much of an improvement would I see if I plug it in into this system. I want to upgrade to Intel platform but doing so would cost me 300+ euros which I don't think I'm willing to do right now. Not to mention that I have Thermaltake V3 or V4 with Noctua NH-D14, I don't even know how this PC survived this long. My mobo survived 2 lightning strikes do to me having ADSL and not unpluging my phone jack during storms, it fried my onboard ethernet and audio so I am using 2 PCI-E slots and my BIOS is bugged and I cannot access it I mainly play WoW, CS:GO, H1Z1, Overwatch and stuff like that. Currently in WoW I cannot play in a raid setting with a preset of 1 without my FPS going lower than 30, and in Overwatch i feel my mouse floaty probably because of FPS drops, all settings low render scale 100%. Hey guys, this is my first time posting here, but I am not new to linustechtips... To start off, I am using an intel i7 3770, with a xfx radeon 6870 (ik lol) , and 8Gb of 1333 Mhz Ram (2x4gb) I currently am using one 1680x1050 monitor, and in the future I am wanting to play racing games like dirt 3, grid, the crew, etc with 3 monitors. I am most likely picking up a logitech g27... I am just wondering if I should stay with a single card solution (gtx 970 or r9 290) if I want to play with 3 monitors, or do something else like two gtx 670's or even 6870's in sli/xfire? I know it would be a better option to go with a 980 ti, or 980 or something, but I just dont have the money for those types of cards. I will want to play 60 fps on high, if possible, maximum details. NOTE: I am using 1 Samsung Syncmaster 226BW 2MS monitor currently. Which only has D-Sub and DVI-D... Does only having these types of connections limit my ability to have a 3 monitor surround option for games? Thanks

I have been enjoying my XFX Radeon HD 6870 for about 3.5 years now. It works very well but it is getting around time to upgrade. I'd like to have 4GB or more of GDDR5. I'm planning on spending $300-$350 (yay Tax Returns!) on a new card. I have used mostly AMD (usually XFX branded) GPUs and have been very happy. I have had friends and family that have had problems with their NVidia GPUs before. (granted those were mostly pretty cheap cards) I am leaning towards an AMD (XFX branded) but am not completely against the idea of going with a NVidia card if there will be better performance. I only have DVI-D and VGA inputs. I tend to only use the middle once for gaming. I would like the card to have enough horsepower to be able to run all three cards in eyeFinity (and whatever NVidia's equivalent technology is). I usually use softTH (http://softth.net/) because I can choose to use it on a per game basis. I've attached a picture of the inside of my case for size reference. I moved my PC to do some cleaning. I took the GPU out for some dusting, dusted the CPU cooler. I cleaned the dust filters and more or less made some difference. When I went to boot my PC it would POST, then flash entering Windows, then immediately lose signal to monitor. It happens over HDMI and DVI. When speakers are plugged in you can hear that the PC is making it to desktop. The fans on the GPU are humming with both 6-Pin power connectors attached, reset the GPU in the PCI-Express slot, nothing changed. If I hit delete to enter the UEFI BIOS during the POST screen, the BIOS screen flashes, then goes black from no signal. After physically removing the GPU from the PCI-E slot and running the monitor through the motherboard I/O off Intel HD graphics I didn't lose signal, everything was working. I even updated the Intel HD 3000 drivers while I was there. I don't have another GPU to test out. I've been looking forward to an upgrade for around a year, I've had the 6870 for nearly 3 1/2 years since March 2012; originally was released Q4 2010. My GPU had been making some annoying coil whine vibration noise the last few months commonly whether I was gaming or just at idle from having the PC on for 4-5 hours. The temps weren't what they used to be with idle temps now being around 45-50°C and while gaming it got close to 90°C on load. The GPU may have been on it's last legs. Maybe when I took it out to dust it I broken it. IDK. While using the Intel graphics to work on the PC, I went ahead and uninstalled all AMD drivers I could through the control panel. When I try to install the latest AMD drivers with catalyst 15.7.1 it won't let me. I believe I can't install any AMD video drivers because the GPU has been removed from the PCI-Express slot. The predicament is that while my AMD GPU is connected to the PC there's no signal and if I work in Windows under Intel HD I can't add any new AMD drivers. Is my GPU broken, is this a driver issue that's losing the signal? I have an idea to enter the BIOS and set the motherboard I/O to have priority over PCI-Express, shutdown, reinstall the AMD GPU, then reinstall all the AMD drivers from there because the hardware would be recognized by the CCC driver package. Got any ideas? The GPU fans spin, the PC makes it past POST, then flashes a picture momentarily before losing signal.

Hi everyone, n00b asking for some recommendations here, I live in Indonesia, and one of my buddy is giving me a brand new MSI r9 280 3g. I have encountered some questions regarding the PSU, should i upgrade to a better one? or use the current one, i dont mind spending cash for a new PSU as long as my pc will work fine, because i heard some people say 500w is enough but some say they dont. So I don't have any money so buying a 2nd GPU ISN'T an option. I have a sapphire r9 280 vapor x. I was offered a trade for two sapphire 6870s. Thoughts? I've asked several places and have been getting mixed answers. Some people say that the dual GPU's would be better. Some say otherwise. Okay so my budget has become tight on changing my GPU from XFX 6870 1GB, and I am unsure on what to get. The games I play are stuff like Witcher 2, Diablo 3, Borderlands series etc, for this I was looking at 750Ti (EVGA or MSI). I have a 720p monitor (Got it for nothing so ) so I dont think ultra settings should be an issue more so on these games. Is the 750Ti a good card to upgrade from? If so my budget is £150 what should I get, although the lower the cost the better Thank you very much!

I'm going to build a pc soon and i was going to buy a hd 7770 but someone is selling a used sapphire 6870 which is 10-20 euros cheaper than a new hd 7770.The card does not have any warranty but he is offering me to test it first.What are the basic things i should test?Should i go for it?I know that the 6870 has more tdp than the 7770,so will a corsair 430w be enough for the hd 6870 and a phenom ii x4 965?

Okay so this is my first time using a forum but here goes.. i have 2 Radeon 6870s in crossfire in 16x/4x config The problem is that the card in the 4x slot is recognised as gpu-1 or the master and the one in the 16x slot is the slave. the card in the 16x slot is also running much hotter even though it has more room. My question is does this strange configuration affect performance and can I fix it ? also why is the gpu-2 running hotter ? thanks for any replies in advance

Im running an Asus HD6870 alongside with a p77 board, 3570k and 4gb of ram, i have to upgrade the ram in a near future, what isnt a concern at all, but my gpu...well lets just say i would like to play battlefield 4 , at least at high, will i be able? (ohh im running a resolution of 1920x1200)

Well, this isn't really much of a 'build' log, as this rig has been finished for sometime. But I had it apart and made a couple changes to it today. I rotated the PSU to its current orientation and redid all of the cable management (didn't have much of a choice, I had to cut all the zipties when I flipped the PSU). I also tried to tidy things up inside, Not sure I was successful or not. I'm rather displeased with the appearence of the cables for the power supply. When I installed it, I had to cut off a portion of the heat shrink used to hold on the sleeving because it made the ends of the cables really stiff. I was afraid I was going to put too much strain over time on the connectors. As a result more of the wires then I would like are exposed. Everything else is wired about as good as i can get it with the current case and layout. So I've been offered some good deals on some HD 6000 series cards by some friends, and I was curious what you guys thought. How do these cards stack up against newer cards in some current games like Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, and Planetside 2 at 1080p. HD 6990 - $250 Crossfire 6870s - $140 HD 6970 - $85 Soooo... Thoughts? Should I take any of these? (My current card is a GTX 550ti, So anything is really an upgrade.)

Do you guys think I should rip off the shroud and put some case fans on it? Will it give my better temperatures? Edit: Like directly on the heatsink.

I have a 6870 and I was wonderign I could somehow set a temperature target so that my graphics card doesn't exceed that. Is it possible to do it on a 6870 or is this a 700 series exclusive thing?

I'm running this 6870. I am currently using the HDMI connection to connect to my monitor (which I do not like, it keeps falling off ). I have a couple really old monitors in my house but they all use VGA. So my question is can I use a DVI to VGA adapter or something and run a secondary/dual monitor set up?

Hi LTT. I was just browsing secondhand graphics cards, as I for a long time have considered to upgrade my current AMD Radeon HD 6870, and I found one who is selling 2 Sparkle GTX 580. It's from a Danish website and he is selling both of these cards for 1950 DKK ~ 355 USD. To give you something to compare it to, the price he is selling both of his 580s for (355 USD) could buy you a single GTX 670 or R9 280X, if you wanted a GTX 770 you would have to add another 20 USD. The reason I'm asking whether this is something I should consider or not is, that I fell my computer is starting to lack in power. From my profile you can see the specs of my system, but in short I run a i5 2500K @stock (planning on overclocking in the next week or two) and a single Radeon 6870. As it is right now I wont be able to run both cards without replacing my PSU, which is something to consider as well. I want make a completely new build at some point, with custom water loop, the lot. That's obviously going to be expensive, so I don't want to waste a bunch of money right now on something I'm going to replace within the next year or two. I've had the 6870 for a couple of years now and it served me well and I haven't really felt like I wasn't able to play the games out there, until know. BF4 is running with low FPS, so I need an upgrade. Lets say I'm able to get one GTX 580 for 175 USD, would that be worth the money, or should I try find a PSU I could use for my future build as well and just go for both cards? Could a GTX 580 last me for a year or two. I don't have demands on running everything in ultra and 80+ FPS. I prefer FPS over details, so I rather run at medium settings and getting a higher FPS to take some advantage of my 120Hz monitor. Right now I run BF4 with all on low and everything disabled, so I'd be happy just to take this up a notch. Cheers Shaqalac.

So as a example, if I have the computer idle for 20-30 min it will NOT sleep but instead blue screen and reboot. Here is a list of things that I KNOW it does: It WILL blue screen even if I don't log into Windows. If I change the sleep timer to something like 5 minutes, it will go to sleep, and resume from sleep no blue screen. It will boot, blue screen, reboot indefinitely. The monitor CAN be turned off (via power saving options not physically of course) and not blue screen. it only takes the move of the mouse to not blue screen. If a game is running in background it WILL blue screen. If a movie is running in background it WILL NOT blue screen. It only does it with Windows 8.1 not Windows 8 Things I have tried: Doing a clean install of Windows via a 8.1 install media. The install of Windows goes great, but I CAN NOT install the "Windows 8" version of the Chipset driver, it hangs indefinitely and seems to be tied in with the RAID driver. If I try installing the chipset driver using the advanced option and do not select the RAID portion of it, it goes off without a hitch. But blue screens still occur. I have done this 2 different ways. I installed the "Windows 8" chipset driver, then installed the 8.1 Audio, LAN, and the 2 Utilities that ASUS has provided. I have also not installed anything other than the 8.1 approved drivers, leaving anything the chipset driver does as pure stock. Doing a clean install of Windows 8, then upgrading to 8.1. This method seems to "buy me some time". I will install Windows 8, install the Windows 8 chipset driver (using the express install method which goes great), then install the video driver and then Windows Updates. Then let it upgrade to Windows 8.1. Then install the 8.1 audio, LAN, and Utilities from before. This method seems to give me about a week of use before it starts doing the blue screening again. (I have tried this method 2 times and both times are about the same) With both methods I install all my drivers needed for peripherals, like my webcam, keyboard and mouse, and wireless adapter. I do not think these have anything to do with bluescreens. I also install the video drivers usually after the chipset, but before everything else. I do not believe it is the video card either. What I do think it is... I have narrowed it down to 2 different things, I think. I think it is, over the course of that week, updating the drivers for some device and I am not able to locate which device it is (the Windows update log doesn't have anything like that at all but we all know how non-informative that can be). Another thing I think it could be is the "synced PC settings" and it is finally syncing my settings and constantly loading a setting that I have maybe changed that isn't jiving so well. This is also what I know is happening: According to the Event Viewer I am getting a few errors repetitively... This could also explain why it isn't doing it for about a week or so because maybe that first week Windows is like "wait, I got to get all this new shit sorted out first before I go trying to take care of myself"... The computer that I originally bought had: PSU - FSP 450W (80+ Bronze) Motherboard - Foxconn P55M01 CPU - Intel Core i5 650 RAM - 3x2Gb Samsung 1333Mhz (DDR3) GPU - GT330 -_- HDD - WD Caviar Green 1TB My actual PC specs: Case - Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 PSU - Corsair GS600 Motherboard - Foxconn P55M01 CPU - Intel Core i5 650 RAM - 3x2Gb Samsung 1333Mhz (DDR3) GPU - Sapphire 6870 Dirt3 Edition (Dual Fans) SSD - 120GB Samsung 840 HDD - 1TB WD Green Headset - Steelseries Siberia V2 In the summer of 2012 I bought a 6870 used , for 120€ and bough a GS600. It probably wasn't the best combination but at the time I was mind blown by the performance of this card. Here's a photo of my PC at that time : In January of this I bought myself a Samsung 840 180GB SSD. My 3 minutes boot turned into a 30 second boot :D And here are some more photos : About a month ago I finally bought what I wanted for a long time : a Fractal Design Midi R2 :) So that's it ! For now. Give me your opinions on my build and what I should change.

So every once in a while (about 2 or 3 times in 6 months) my graphics card will make a grinding noise. Sometimes it's through start up. Sometimes it's fine and I'm idling, so I go get food or something and I come back to hear this grinding sound. It's more of a gnarling/grinding sound. I think it may be the fan. Does any one know what the problem is? I'm running this card by the way.

As I said in the title, for this build I tried to make a gaming pc to play videogame in my short freetime, spending only a few money overall because I currently am not financially well off :wacko: I started from an Acer M3970 given to me by my parents in October 2011 for my birthday. From this Pc I preserved: Cpu: Intel Core i5-2300 Motherboard: A Foxconn H67 Hd: Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 500Gb Afterwards i bought from an user in an italian hardware forum an used Asus 6870 and a pair of Kingstom Value Series 4Gb DDr3 Ram. Finally from a friend i obtained a power supply 450w bronze certified and an Antec Kuhler 620 :D Last but not least... I chose as case a Fractal Design Core 1000. It's so cheap but very well builded... and I love its sober and minimalistic looking Soon i will link here some pictures of the final build :)
