So I have an ASUS H170 Pro Gaming board with I5-6600K. As you know I can't OC on this board but I saw an CPU_OV jumper on the board and I was wondering what is it for? I mean it is for overclocking but I can't overclock or can I? If I can't then what is it for? I don't get it.

Since I bought my i5-6600k, I knew my chip wasn't the best at overclocking. It could never handle an 'average' OC, like other people could achieve with this CPU (for example 4.5GHz at 1.3V). The odd thing about this is that unstable overclocks always hard-freeze my whole PC, instead of BSODing. So I just settled for 4GHz 1.2V, which was perfectly fine - ran at these settings for like 2 years without problems. I've recently decided to overclock it more, but the damn thing can't even handle 4.2GHz at 1.36V, with LLC being either at Standard or High. Temperatures were fine and voltages corresponding to what I set them to. Again, people would reach 4.2GHz at almost stock voltages (1.2V). What can be the problem here? I can't be THIS unlucky with my chip, there has to be something more to it... My BIOS is up to date, I even reinstalled Windows but the results are the same, so anything software related has nothing to do with it. I've read several guides on overclocking and even tried to OC based on a YouTube video where they had the same MOBO and CPU, so I don't think I'm doing it wrong. To make matters worse, it now started freezing even at my previously fine settings (4GHz 1.2V). Note: I have replaced my GPU, PSU and all storages, but the same problem still persists, so these parts can't be the problem. So, to conclude my questions: Why are unstable overclocks hard-freezing my PC, instead of giving me a BSOD, as it usually does to other people? Why could this be happening, or what can I do? Here are my specs: CPU: i5-6600k MOBO: Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3 (rev 1.1) RAM: DDR4 HyperX Fury 2x8GB 2133MHz CL14 GPU: MSI GTX 1060 6GB PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 650W Storage: Samsung 960 Evo Any help is appreciated.

If you did, was it worth it? Did it significantly increase your performance? I am thinking of buying a 3600 but I am still unsure. Intel is no option because it's not worth it in the EU. I would greatly appreciate any and all answers to my questions. Thank you in advance!

Howdy. So I have had my first bash at overclocking my i5, managed to get 4.6ghz at 1.32v. I have seen so many different things online about vcore and what is acceptable, I have seen figures going up to 1.45. I want to run this as a everyday OC with reasonable temps that my h110i AIO can handle so I am looking for a bit of advice with max clock speed and vcore limits. Just looking to see if I can push my chip a bit further without setting a fire.

Hello everyone! I really really hope that some of you guys is able to help me i am getting really desperated. First of all this is my Full build https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/567xqw/last_... . My Monitor is an Acer XB270HU and my SSD Is a Samsung evo m.2 850. I will explain you now my Problems and please stay with me, i own this PC now for 4 Months and no one could ever help me since then. I do own Windows 10 Education version 64 Bit. Okey so lets go. All Drivers are up-to date, if necessary tell me some programs, which will show you all my current driver informations and I will let you know ! So for example lets come to gaming: I play CsGo and I know that this game is more CPU based, than GPU, but still with an Intel core i5 6600k I should get some good Fps right? So I can tell you that i maxed out the graphics at Wqhd (2k) and I am playing with 80-130 or sometimes 110-150 fps. Now the thing is, even if I lower the graphics to the LOWEST settings, it won't change anything in my fps numbers. Also ALL the times, when i press ESC and try to open the menu, the whole game stutters and the sound laggs for a second and then I am able to go to the menu. I did not lock any FPS and vertical Sync is disabled because i have a g-sync monitor which can deal with that. So I do have low FPS in that game, in Benchmarking of Graphic cards, i tested my rate with a friend and we got almost the same numbers so my graphic card is okey (Gtx 1080 MSI). Secondly, when I tab out of games which are played in Fullscreen mode (for Example Rocket League, CsGo or even Black ops1) I am getting most of the times a black screen where I can't do anything expect hearing sounds. When I re-tab in the game and close the game afterwards, i get a black screen and can't do anything so I have to force a reboot. Now comes the most annoying part and I hope there will be some people who can understand this. Like I said I do own an 144 HZ Acer Monitor, which is awesome, dont get me wrong. I tested the monitor at a friend and everything was working fine! By that i am talking about the "SMOOTHNESS". If you guys ever used an 144 HZ Screen you will know what I am talking about. When you move your mouse it just looks amazingly smooth and for example if you drag a folder (right in your windows desktop) around, you see how amazingly smooth the animation is and that you are even able to read the content of the folder. BUT !! When I was using the properly working Screen at my PC, it definately was not running as smooth as it was before. I have enabled 144 HZ obviously and G-Sync in Window and Fullscreen mode, and it does run smoother than a regular 60 HZ screen, but it just does not work as it should be ! And it can not be the Graphics card, because I even tested the graphics card from my friend where everything was working fine, but in my PC connected, it didn't change anything ! I can not explain what is causing this micro lags all the time and why it is happening. I also can not find any kind of solution in the Internet and this is why I am praying that someone of you guys is able to help me I would be so incredible glad ! Let me add one MSINFO with that topic so you can already see what kind of components and drivers I have. I already installed windows 3 times new, with a completely clean install but it did not change anything. Please let me know if you need any kind of Information else ! Thank you so much guys! I just paid $57 on ebay for an i5 6600k that is brand new (kinda, he said he opened it to test if it worked). Do you think this is a scam? His account was created today, so I'm not sure if it's a scam or if he just never sold anything on ebay before. He claims he received it as a gift but does not need it as he already has an i7. I will get it by next week. Hopefully not a scam.

CPU: i5 6600k MOBO: MSI Z270 Mortar Micro GPU: gtx 1060 PSU: Corsair 500w RAM: 2400mhz ddr4 I overclocked to 4.6ghz with 1.21v (which should be an instant crash but it isn't crashing). afterward, I stress tested through aida 64 and my cpu clock keeps changing from 3600-4600 MHz (even though I have my cpu clock set to FIXED). and the voltage is also changing up and down anywhere from 1.21v-1.26v (even though I have it on OVERRIDE). I also disabled intel's speed step tech and EIST and I also disabled the C-state. but it looks like my computer doesn't want me to do anything manually and I'm trying to find a stable overclock but all my values keep changing!!

Hey guys! Lately I was doing some benchmarks with Cinebench R15 and I noticed that when on idle the CPU runs at normal clocks but if I put some heavy workload on it it starts to throttle. I tried disabling c-states and speedstep. Tried increasing the volts enabling/disabling XMP increase cache ratio and tried what I could in AIsuite 3 My specs are the following: Intel i5-6600k CPU Corsair cs-650 PSU 16 GB DDR4 2133Mhz RAM Asus B150 Mobo(had no idea that I wont be able to oc on a B series Mobo) Thanks in advance!

Hey I wanted to upgrade to an i7 and I was wondering if putting a 7700k in a z170a motherboard would be a bad thing. Do the new z270 motherboards matter much? My current build is an i5 6600k, msi z170a m5, evga 1070 acx sc, 16gb corsair vengence lpx, and an evga 650w 80+ gold psu.

Hello All, I put this comp together from parts from trial and error builds, and troubleshooting parts for other machines. Intel Core i5 6600K 3.50 GHz Quad Core Skylake Desktop Processor, Socket LGA 1151, 6MB Cache Lepa AquaChanger 120MM Liquid CPU Cooler, LPWAC120-HF Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-UD5 Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz (PC4-24000) C15 Memory Kit - Black EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, 8GB GDDR5X, LED, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 08G-P4-6180-KR Kingston Digital 120GB SSDNow UV400 SATA 3 2.5" Solid State Drive SUV400S37/120G EVGA Supernova G2 750W 220-G2-0750-XR Fully Modular Power Supply NZXT S340 Mid Tower Computer Case, Glossy Black (CA-S340W-B1) Corsair Air Series SP 120 LED Green High Static Pressure Fan Cooling Corsair Air Series SP 140 LED Green High Static Pressure Fan Cooling Windows 10 Pro, Kaspersky AV, Abode Creative Cloud, DOOM, etc... A few issues with the NZXT S340 case but not too bad. I couldn't quite fit a 240 Corsair H105 CPU cooler in the front. While I did sort of JAM it in the case the tubing was blocking everything, and the tubing was straining its connections because of the tight bending. And so I ordered an air cooler (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO) but that didn't fit as well, too tall (but was very close). So the Lepa took over and is performing quite well. What is also cool about the Lepa is it can fit Socket 775 CPU's, so i might use it again on one of my older gaming rigs. Also the MOBO backplate had problems fitting which is causing the MOBO backplate display to bow out a little. Not a huge issue [see pic]. The cables fit with no problem and it is not really visible since its the back of the PC. I didn't feel like grinding it down a little to get the exact fit because the finish kind of flakes off. The paint sort of chip away when securing the screws for the PSU and side panels. Lastly no where to put a DVD ROM, but not a necessity for me. The MOBO has some cool gold lighting running up the left side along the back of the PC. I ran DOOM at max setting at 4K, but had some issues and by dropping the AA by half it worked with no problems.

I've been using a Toshiba laptop with a Pentium 2020m CPU clocked at 2.4GHz with no discrete GPU so i've been rocking hard with those integrated framerates. Now while i must admit this little Pentium has done more than its fair share of work when it comes to light gaming and even (very sluggish) photo editing, it's time to move on to bigger and better things. I set myself a 1000 to 1100 EURO budget and am looking to build myself my first (done by me) desktop. It will be used mostly for gaming (1080p/1440p, i already own a 1080p monitor and all the peripherals), school work and photo editing, altough nothing too serious. This is the PCPP list: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/g9LmWX I went with the german PCPP link but i am open to buying components from all over europe (read: amazon and other reputable websites) and am always looking for a good deal while trying to keep the same parts list or equivalent parts for less money. I am from Portugal if it makes any difference. My questions to the nice folk over here are: 1- Is this a 'balanced' build? I know this is pretty much a buzzword but basically does the CPU bottleneck the GPU or am i good with the build as is? 2- Should i go with the K unlocked skylake CPU or opt for a locked newer gen kaby lake (7500/7600)? 3- I couldn't really decide between the ASUS Z170-P and the MSI Z170-A PRO motherboards, which one do you guys think is better? 4- Should i get a single 8GB stick of ram and at a later time buy another one or buy the 2x4GB kit on the PCPP list and later on buy another 2x4GB kit to fill the four RAM slots? 5- Is the PSU i chose good enough for this build in terms of watts and just plain quality? I saw it is on the third tier of the PSU tier list on here but i'm not sure how that stacks up against the rest of the build, even with it being 80+ gold certified. 6- And finally, is the case adequate? I like the way it looks and it seems to have adequate air flow but since this is my first build i still have no real idea and am not looking to slowcook my components. Those are all the things that, off the top of my head, i can think to ask. I'd greatly appreciate any help or feedback! Also, before anyone asks, i will eventually slap an SSD on that thing to use as a boot drive.

Hello Forum! I might not have the need to do this, but i want to change out my 980ti with a 1080ti once the custom cooling configs hits the market for it! But my main concern is if my CPU is strong enaugh to not bottleneck the system, at this time i have a i5 6600k overclocked to 4.6gHz, using a corsair h100i v2. My question then is this, will my overclocked CPU be a bottleneck for the mighty 1080ti or will it be fine? Ohh and i almost forgot, this is my monitor --> http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/272G5DYEB_00/brilliance-lcd-monitor-with-nvidia-g-synctm

Hello everyone, I've overclocked my i5 6600k to 4,5GHz by applying 1,25V static to the VCore. This runs for 2 months now without any crashes and is tested stable by using AIDA64 stress test for over an hour, and prime95 test for 20 minutes. Temperatures are 20-25 degrees Celsius idle, 35-45 while gaming, up to 65 in prime95's maximum heat test. The clock will always run at 4,5GHz with 1,25V. Last week I've tried to set the VCore dynamicly; by setting +0,12V as offset in my bios. This way the CPU runs at 4,5GHz with 1,25V under load, and throttles down to 1,0GHz with 0,9V applied. This mode also seems to work stable; no crashes this week and stable according to AIDA64 and prime95. This seems to have no influence on temperatures; idle temps are still between 20-25 degrees Celsius, load temperatures also remained the same. I've added a screenshot which includes voltage regulation while using this method. Which of these methods is best (for a gaming pc)? The static one? (less load on the voltage regulators maybe?) The dynamic one? (better for the cpu itself maybe?) Bios settings: CPU Voltage mode: offset CPU Voltage offset mode: + CPU Voltage offset voltage: 0,12V Intel Enhanced SpeedStep technology: enabled System specs: Motherboard: MSI Z170 A SLI PLUS (MS-7998) CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K OS: Windows 10 64bit: energy profile 'balanced' (min: 5% cpu, max: 100% cpu)

quick question. I have a 6600k oc to 4.6ghz and playing games like Stellaris and hearts of iron 4 in the mid to late game is incredibly slow with cpu maxing to 100%. would a 6700k help me with this or would say a ryzen 1700x upgrade be worthwhile, with its more actual cores?. im on a 240mm AIO so cooling isn't an issue and my main use case is these sorts of games, iv looked around on the internet and cannot find anything definitive about what these games can utilise so not sure which route to go whether or not to upgrade.

Hi there. I recently built my new rig (minus the case and graphics card) and out of boredom decided to see if I could get it to post. I plugged in my PSU and attached the 24 pin and 8 pin power cables and to my delight the CPU fan spun up and all the LEDs turned on. Unfortunately, my display remained blank so I turned the system off and back on. This time no fan spin up and I have only had a solid green power switch led on. I have heard no beeps and I am sure there is no short. I have tried with one stick and 2 sticks of ram in different positions and that made no difference (I never got a memory error led so I never expected any difference). I have taken off the CPU cooler and taken out and replaced the CPU (side note I got a very small drop of thermal compound on the contact pads of the CPU while cleaning it, should I be concerned). And still no luck. I have tried various other things like clearing CMOS and still the same solid green led. I am using: -Intel i5 6600k -asus z170-a -Ripjaw V 2133 dd4 2x4g -corsair cx650m psu My power supply is brand new (literally bought it today) and none of my other components are previously used. I don't know if it matters but I have been using a tv rather than a monitor for post because I don't have my monitor yet. This is my first build so it could be some stupid mistake but I was quite thorough. Sorry if this post is in the wrong place, I am new to this forum. Thanks.

I have an i5-6600K and an Asus Z170-A Motherboard. I have a GTX 970 and a M.2 SSD (configured as eSATA). Can I add another GTX 970? According to this image below I should be able to add a second GTX 970 since the M.2 SSD is using PCIe lanes from the motherboard while the 2 GFX cards will be handled by the CPU. Am I right?

Hi I have a pc with these parts asus z170-e 6600k evga 500w samsung 750 120gb evga 1060 3gb corsair vengeane 1x8 gb ddr4 2666 MHz hyper evo 212 cooler I've had problems keeping it stable, atm I have it on 3,5 Ghz with 1,250 Voltage, but under load it only gets about 1,178 Voltages according to both Hwmonitor and cpuz. I've checked all the cables twice and they're good so my question is if this is normal or if it's any bad hardware and if just can turn up the voltage extra much without hurting the cpu.

My pc crashes everytime i put it to under load, for example prime 95 in-place large FFTs Test. Sometimes I can play Games for maybe an hour without a crash but sometimes it crashes every 5 minutes and it's really annoying. When it crashes my chroma peripherals stop their lights and the screen turns black, it don't show any error code and the fans are still running but I can't do anything execpt turning it off on start button on my case. Thankful for help, i'll be here to answer questions.

Considering selling my 6600k, as for whole 18 months i've had it, it's constantly locked up, and even RMA'd every single component in my build to see what was causing it, and still happening. so i'm just wondering if kaby lake is any more stable, than skylake, as I've just absolutely had enough and sick of it, just wish intel would recall both skylake K SKUs, as i've even read through intel's own forum, tom's, here, and reddit, for any solution, and nothing other than the prime number bug. if anyone from intel see's this, sort your sh*t out.

Hey there, I've been trying to overclock my 6600K to 4.4GHz. My Settings are: XMP: Enabled (2400MHz Ram) Multiplier: 44 BCLK: 100 Vcore: Manual at 1.3V (Started at 1.28). Asus Z170-E Bios version 3307 It will pass Cinebench, and RealBench on stress for 3 hours. But when I run IntelBurnTest, it will consistently fail at 1000 seconds on maximum. I have moved the voltage from 1.28 to 1.3, but same result. Also, I have the LLC set to Auto, and it spikes my voltage up to 1.344V, and I have tried setting it to Level 1 (15%) and same result. Also, it crashed playing GTA 5, but is fine in every other game. Max temps reached was 78-80-77-78. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm planning on building the part list listed here whenever prices are extra low or just Black Friday. The only problem is the fact that I have no monitor so I'm wondering what type of monitor would work well. Preferable lower than 150$. Also just looking for general opinions about the list. normal link for the list listed here also https://pcpartpicker.com/user/PolishedKarma13/saved/gpjMpg
