Hi all, need help with a monitor setup i'm trying to get working. we have an unwelcome guest at the party, as usual, and the name, as usual, is........apple basics: i'm trying to hook up an LG Ultrafine 5K thunderbolt display on windows 10 and have it run at 5k resolution. there's this guy who claims he was able to do it, and he wrote a full article about it here. the cat seems to have gotten his tongue when he's asked about any particulars though, so that's why i'm here. the premise is, to run 5k resolution, apple combines the streams of 2 display ports internally on its devices that are running this monitor, and then shoots the signal out the thunderbolt port and into this monitor getting...voila...5k resolution. according to this guy's article, that's what the titan ridge 2.0 card is supposed to do. but, alas, i am getting no such stream combining when i hook up the exact setup he's describing. I've tried this with two different video cards: one of them a quadro P4000, and the other a GTX 1060; no joy with either case. could you guys look into this? i've got a hefty investment sitting here that i'm just not able to get working. your guys' help would be much appreciated. Jared

has anyone bought an LG ultrafine and had issues with it? i bought mine about 2-3 years ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. I called LG today and they said there is nothing they can do about it but the issue im having is a know issue where the single display thunderbolt stops working. it will not turn on the display but it will charge my macbook.

Hi, can i am asking for advice. Because i am having LG Ultrafine 4K almost 1 year, but i found today 1 dead pixel and I am refunding that unit back to Apple. I really liked this monitor but, it has some disadvantages like glossy surface and no HDMI inputs. What i like is just plug macbook pro in and i am ready to go without power bricks and etc. But maybe there is some better option than this monitor, i need something similar with Thunderbolt 3 which can also charge my macbook. I also want resolution 4K or 5K and maximum size for me is 27 inches. I am using it only for programming iOS apps, nothing more. I looked on options and i found alternative like BenQ PD2720U but not sure of it's quality, also i am thinking about LG Ultrafine 5K, but it has same disadvantages like their 4K and even 1 thunderbolt less :(. Do you have some experience with monitors for macbooks over Thunderbolt 3 or can you give me some advice. Thank you.

I see posts on the forums and around on reddit etc with mixed info on the LG Ultrafine 5k and thunderbolt 3 and windows support etc etc etc.... so first of all it CAN be done but I did this thought I'd dispel a few common myths I find online: You can't: -Run a thunderbolt to dual display port cable adapter to power this guy they aren't bidirectional -Use DisplayPort to usb c cables all over on amazon and stuff because they again only convert one way from thunderbolt 3-->DisplayPort and not the other way -Use the thunderbolt or USBc headers on most motherboards because often times they DON'T support TB3 or they aren't able to send the display signal correctly using iGPU As I was desperately attempting to get my monitor to work I discovered the following AIC from ASRock: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815548003 I found an Asus card claiming similar spec but reviews and lack of supporting info on their website led me to believe it wouldn't work at all... After researching the specifications on the ASRock website I found this line in the manual (manual pdf): So at this point I'm thinking whaaaasaaaaaaaa after watching the LTT video on the 5k Ultrafine display techquickie Linus noted that apple does funky proprietary stuff to pass through two DisplayPort signals through the single cable.... BUT ASRock out here claiming they can do the same thing??? I HAD TO TEST THIS... So after looking through the manual for compatible z270 motherboards that had a thunderbolt header I went ahead and picked up the AsRock Z270 Extreme4 and ASRock AIC from newegg. I threw in my 960 pro, a titan XP, single dim, and a 6700k on the board. Plugged in the AIC with the special cable that plugs the AIC into the thunderbolt header on the mono. Booted into windows and installed the thunderbolt 3 driver from the ASRock website. I shutdown the computer, plugged in the TWO included DP and DP-mDP cables into the GPU and then back into the AIC... booted and plugged in the LG 5k AND BOOM FULL RESOLUTION 60HZ NO TINKERING It just worked seamlessly and I've had no issues. Unfortunately the speakers aren't working correctly (which is weird because my macbook running bootcamp can drive the monitor at 4k with speakers etc...) but it works! I've got a hefty OC on the titan XP and was able to run GTA V at 5k with an average 65 frames very high to ultra settings. The colors look fantastic and the screens way better than the dell 5k IMO. TL;DR You can drive the 5k ultrafine with an ASRock AIC and a Compatible asrock board its got 10bit color and looks gorgeous

So the new LG UltraFine 27 uses Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C port) as an input, is there a way to drive this display using a graphic card like the GTX 1080 which uses DisplayPort as an output, maybe some kind of adapter? I know that displayport can handle 5k@60 Hz so in theory it should work.

I have got a UP2715K display from Dell and a PNY Quadro M2000. Unluckily I'm not able to achieve a 5K resolution on Windows 10 Pro, even if all the drivers are installed (and both the DP cables are connected). I've already checked both the cables and both works fine. Surfing the menus, I saw that in the NVidia control panel only one cable is detected, in the first DP connector (or port number 1, see the attached image). So I did try to unplug the 2nd cable, and the computer didn't even notice it. I did try to install other drivers version too but without success. (I hope the section is right... In case I'm wrong, excuse me)

First I'll preface saying that, as far as I can tell, I'm posting this in the correct place. If this belongs in the "reviews" sub-forum, I apologize; I figured this information is most relevant to this community. So over the past few years I've had the pleasure of experiencing all sorts of monitors and TVs and I wanted to share my insights to give some perspective to potential buyers, or those curious. The "reviews" will be in chronological order of when I first owned the display, but feel free to skip around or only look at what interests you. I imagine the last few are going to by far the most interesting, but I felt it useful to include everything for use of comparison. Displays I still own will be Italicized and reviews I find will be particularly interesting will be bolded. Acer V233H (23" 1080p TN LCD) Acer GD235HZbid (23.6" 1080p 120hz TN LCD) ASUS PB238Q (23" 1080p e-IPS LCD) Samsung U28D590D (28" 4k TN LCD) Samsung Syncmaster 1200NF (22" CRT 1600x1200@85hz) LG 34UM95 (34" 3440x1440 (Non-curved) IPS LCD) Acer K242HQKbmjdp (24" 4k IPS LCD) AMH A399U (40" 4k VA LCD) Dell D2015H (20" 1080p TN LCD) Dell 2007FP (~20" 1600x1200 TN(?) Hi everyone, So I recently acquired a Dell UP2715k from my work, since it was damaged it was going to be thrown out so I brought it home. As you can see in the pictures, it works totally fine, with the only issues being the crack and the bubble formed in the top left corner. I'd like to salvage it if I can, does anyone know if it would be possible to replace the glass somehow, or repair it some other way? It would be a shame for it to not get used, it's a gorgeous 5k 10 bit display. Thanks in advance! Monitor: https://www.dell.com/ae/business/p/dell-up2715k-monitor/pd

So I have a late 2015 iMac that will not turn on at all. No fans, backlight, charms, lights, clicks, just completely dead. This happened overnight. Could it be a bad power supply? The computer was in an office environment where the building looses power somewhat often. Any ideas? I've got it tore down with the screen off and now I just want to know if its fixable. Thanks

So i have 2x 4K displays (24Inch LG Displayts) and i love them. When i write programs and software development, watch videos and all the resolution is amazing. However I do sit quite close to the computer, so much so that i can still manage to see pixels when i "try" (yes not even that hard on a 24Inch 4K displays, but then again when i look at a FHD display at 1080p it's like going back to the "old days"). If there where 8K displays og 5K displays on a 24inch size I'd probably save up for them. However, i saw that Linus reviewed a 5K display by LG (27inch). Now it probably has the same pixel density -ish, compared to my 4k 24 inch displays, so i thought as a third monitor in a triangle setup (2x 4k's at the bottom and one 27" 5K in the center on top) to be a nice setup. However, he goes into detail stating you can't get 5K on windows giving thunderbolt limitations due to displayport 1.2 etc. However newer graphics card ahve displayport 1.4 and i believe the RTX cards have USB-C. Does the limitation still apply? Specifically the LG Ultrafine is a really cheap monitor when bought manufacturing refurbished https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LG-UltraFine-5K-Display-Monitor-5120x2880-Resolution-Display-27MD5KA-RRP-1179-/132807054082 "Cheap" being relative of course. And if USB-C/Thunderbolt is out of the question, are there alternative 27Inch 5K displays? Thanks in advance for your input

HI, I sold my Macbook and dual 5k displays to get something newer and going back to PC again. I'm curious what monitor you recommend that is as good or better than the LG 5k displays I previously used. I prefer 4k-5k and over 100hz refresh rate. The system will be used mainly for my daily finance and trading work and occasional weekend gaming. Thank you,

Here's something I've been working on during lockdown. I recently figured out how to build my own DIY Apple 5K display to be used with any device over HDMI or USBC let me know what you think! < removed by moderation >

Hey guys and gals, So, I currently use a 40" 4k TV which i use as a monitor (Sacrilege I know) but it was a cheap way of getting screen real estate for a low price as a student. I also have two rubbish 4:3 22" monitors as periphals which i despise. Now i have a bit of money i plan for a change. I was stuck between a 34" ultrawide and two 27" monitors stuck on the side, or three 32" 4k monitors. Being a big fan of the ultrawide but finding the step down from 4k to 1440p hard my solution is to keep my 40" 4k as a central display and then just get two 32" 4k monitors but have them in portrait on either side allowing for a resolution of 5040 X 2160 (5K/4k Ultrawide). An example of this is here However in my setup i would be using larger side monitors and with higher resolution. My question is basically if this would work? Are there any problems i haven't seen? The 40" has a ppi of 110, and the 32" of 137. I know i would have black bars on the 32, that doesn't bother me, but is there a problem running the 32" actually at a lower resolution than intended so that the picture lines up across the screen? i.e i only want it to fill 2160 pixels in the space it has 2700? I've heard having lower resolutions that don't divide equally into the native can cause blurriness? How bad would this be? Before you yell, i game as a hobby but want 3 X 4k screens (bigger than 27") for workflow so i will rotate the two side monitors down to normal orientation most of the time. And yes my graphcis card should be ok for the games i run - i just like the cinema experience (I can sacrifice some texture detail). Thanks guys, CJ!

HI Everyone, I currently use a 2016 MacBook Pro (2.9 i7, 16 gig ram maxed out) and 2 LG 5k Displays. I primarily use the system for trading, and using platforms like Etrade and TD. I noticed the system slows down running both platforms and both monitors running, there is some lag. I'm curious to see if anyone here has a system running dual 5K monitors on thunderbolt 3. I had an SSD drive and just need to plan what system I build with an I7 and over 32 gig ram to handle the load. Appreciate any input and suggestions.

Hi there, I have a MacBook Pro 13'' from 2016 with Touch Bar and maxed out. (Ouch! I know, but I was a gift...). The screen is too small for the work I do (VM's and multiple coding software open at the same time). So I'm looking for a monitor. I would prefer to take advantage of the Thunderbolt 3 port in my Mac, so USB-C connectivity would be nice. I'm also looking at something that would not cause strain in the eyes, so I higher resolution would be nice - 4K or 5K, if you suggest a 21:9 please do it with a high res. Besides the USB-C port: -> IPS Panel -> Size is not an issue -> Aspect ratio I would prefer 16:9, I've been told that some 21:9 are not very good in sharpness (but I really don't know). -> Matte or Glossy is no issue either. -> Curved or flat is also not an issue. --> Having the MacBook Pro I've already looked at the LG UltraFine 4K and 5K ($$$ - and I doubt that my Mac, even maxed out, would be capable of running a 5K display and do some heavy work). So the Ultrafine are an option, an expensive option. That's why I came here. Can you please suggest some monitors that meet the criteria above and follow the following order of important requisites: Perfomance (A good display above everything, I will be in front of this my entire day, so it must be good). Build Quality (A sturdy display will be good, one that would last me 5 to 10 years). Design (It comes last but is also an important thing to add). -> It will be expensive, but if the ultrafine are an option you already know my price point: 750€ - 1400€ (yes, I do live in Portugal but I can easily order from Amazon). Thanks in advance.

So, I'm planning on doing a 5k NZD build soon... Was curious what people would recommend. Will be used mainly for gaming, with a decent amount of programming and other work and possibly some content creation... Few Important things: - Not go over 5000 NZD - Parts need to be available on this site: nz.pcpartpicker.com - Must Include a Monitor (Min 2k Preferably) - CPU Must Be 6700k - Be Ready for SLI, But please don't have 2 GPU's - I only need and want 16GB of ram, but having expandability to 32 is a must. - Only needs a 256/512GB High Speed SSD and nothing else (Preferably a 256 high speed m.2, and not PCI as that uses lanes from the cpu) - For case if you can be bothered recommend something sexy ;P Interested in seeing what ppl come up with xD... Also forgot to mention that using this is super useful aswell... http://pricespy.co.nz/ <= Probably even better... Just noted PCPartpicker as its generally requested here

Was looking at some HP laptops the other day, and stumble across this offer of a free HP 27" 5K IPS display, when you buy their HP Elitebook Folio G1 laptop. The catch is, only the most expensive $2K+ model, gives you that free monitor, which is worth $2K+ by itself. Is it a deal? it might be for some of you. The monitor will not show up, until you add the laptop to cart. http://store.hp.com/us/en/ConfigureView?catalogId=10051&urlLangId=&langId=-1&storeId=10151&catEntryId=1257651&quantity=1 Top Link not working? I've been a voyeur lurking over the forums for a while, but decided to break down and finally make an account just so I could pose this inquiry relating a recent benchmark. Guru3d recently posted some impressive 5K results. With a single 1080, they were able to get Shadow of Mordor to reach 42 FPS average without any sort of overclock. While it is a slightly less taxing game compared to games like The Witcher and Far Cry Primal, do you think it could be possible to finally see 5k 60 fps gaming becoming a reality in this generation? It seems like we could potentially see a sort of resolution singularity very soon, where pixel density is no longer an issue. This could eliminate the need for Anti Aliasing, giving us even further fps gains comparatively. I'd be interested in your opinions on the issue.

Hi Everyone, So I'm selling my macbook pro before the new one launches next month. I use my laptop for photoshop, xcode, web, email, nothing really intense here. The system needs SSD. I'm pondering getting a Apple Imac 5k or a Dell XPS 13, Intel Nuc 2016 (i have and ssd already, just need ram) or open to suggestions? The computer I buy will be only be temporary until the new macbook is launched, then I'll sell it on ebay most likely. Right now I use my macbook with El Capitan and Windows 10. Does anyone know which NVIDIA and/or AMD graphics card support a 5K resolution? I have been trying to find them, but the GeForce website has not been very helpful. I have been looking for a 5K graphics card to see if there is such a thing, since I have the monitors. I am leaning towards NVIDIA, but if AMD is the only one that is supported, so be it.

Hi everyone, I am looking for a Graphics Card that supports a 5K resolution while using 256GB of Memory or higher. I do a lot of RAM-Extensive PC Gaming, while rendering 4K videos and animations. Does anyone have a 5K Display (Or 3)? I am looking to see if all 3 of my 5K displays will work with any Graphics Card. I would prefer an NVIDIA, but AMD seems to be the only 5K possibility. Can someone give a thought? P.S. This topic was removed for some reason.

Hi Guys, This is my first official post on here and didn't know which category this would fall into, seen as it will be new to me I guess it's kind of planning. Anyway I'm looking at buying a iMac 5K but debating whether or not they will be releasing a new updated version in September (current model has m295x) would it be worth waiting and see if they update the model too a m390x or would there be no difference if they did? Before you guys go all "oh Apple fanboy here", "Apple sucks". I'm just asking whether it would be worth the wait or just to get the current one. Thanks.
