  1. Hi all, First time poster here, long time LTT/NCIX fan. I got pointed here from a question I posted on a Facebook group, they say you're all friendly and helpful, specifically with the x99 platform. this will be a long post, so I apologise in advance. I've included a TL:DR. TL:DR - I7 5960X OC'D, 8DIMMS, 2HDD, 2SSD, RTX3080 OR 3090, modest rgb, what PSU would power it effectively with a little headroom without spending more than I need to. Also, at 1440p or 4k would the 3070/80/90 be a good match with this build if cpu is around 4.5ghz+ PC will be used for 1440p/4k gaming and content creation with price to performance being key. I use cable extentions nowadays. Is there anything to look out for with high wattage psu? Or will any set do the job if theyre extentions rather than replacements? full context and question I have been trying to get a ps5 for a while now, but as with lots of things at the moment, no dice. So I've decided to move my modern(ish) itx build to the living room as a console replacement. It's a 3700x, 32gb ram, titan xp. I do like to play games in my office, so I'm building a capable pc to do that on a budget based around a cpu I got dead cheap from local ads. If it wasn't for this cpu, I would have bought another ryzen and called it a day. I have come into possession of a 5960x (J batch) I scored for £50 as someone was literally going to throw it away if it didn't sell that day. I saw an opportunity to make a fairly decent system for a decent price and with the 5960x being my dream cpu and x99 being my dream platform back then, I got a huge hit of nostalgia and figured I'd like to build the system, even if I get a few years use out of it and it ends up being a personal show piece or repurposed in my house. I managed to score an Asus X99-S for £60 with some bent pins and very dusty, again the seller said it was old and heading to the bin if it didn't sell with a microscope, some tweezers, and a very steady hand, I fixed the pins, chucked it on a test bench with a stick of ram, my titan x pascal, a basic cooler, and a 450w psu (I know this isn't a good setup but I just wanted to verify it worked, and didnt put it through any stressing as to keep power draw and temps down). I have now cleaned the board too and it looks good as new Since then I bought 8x4gb sticks of DDR4 3000mhz for £90, an ssd, tested again that all ram was recognised and running at the correct speeds, to my delight it was. I then installed windows and used it for some YouTube and Web browsing (low power tasks just to see if I got any random crashes or blue screens, again, all fine after a few hours) Now that I know all is working and no issues have come up (famous last words) im looking to build the system properly. I understand this cpu can be a real power sucker when overclocked, and I want to make sure I'm buying a powerful enough PSU for it, without getting into the realm of over the top and overpriced for what I actually need. I'd usually go for a 450-750w bronze to gold rated PSU from a good company like EVGA or XFX, but that's usually been for mid range consumer components, my builds so far have been 1. Athlon X2 3000+ 4gb ram, 9800gt 2. Core2quad q6600, 8gb ram, gtx 285 3. FX 6300, 8gb ram, gtx 770 4. I5 4690k, 16gb ram, gtx 980 5. I7 8700k, 32gb ram, gtx 1080ti (sold due to circumstances) 6. Ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb ram, gtx titan xp (current rig) As I started writing the list, I ended up chucking all of them in, was nice to actually see the progression Anyway. Now I'm looking at the 5960x, 32gb ram (quad channel), and an rtx 3070/80/90 depending on availability and performance with the cpu, and reading about power consumption, the 3000 series and this cpu can be quite thirsty. I was eying up an 850w gold unit from evga or similar company thinking surely it would be enough, but I'm not sure, would this be enough with some cushion? Or do I need a 1000w psu? I've tried looking online and most systems with this chip have multi gpu which immediately puts the psu requirement up to 1.2kw and up, which doesn't answer my question with a single gpu set up I can get an 850w decent psu (eg evga supernova) for about £100, but the same psu in a 1kw version is about £160+, which is why I'm questioning if the extra money is worth it for this build, or if I can put the money towards the gpu instead and the 850w power the system with no concerns about house fires or killing components All in all, I've gotten the mobo, ram and CPU for £200 which is way less than another 3700x combo, I have storage drives already, Arctic Liquid Freezer 360mm is on the way £100, I'm also deciding between the Corsair 4000D or the NZXT 710 to house it all in £100 again. I just need to get some reassurance on the psu side of things. Lastly. I use psu cable extentions nowadays to keep my builds clean, link below https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08JKGGVR7/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_60B62MQ32SH809Y7JPWN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 These have worked brilliantly with a few builds so far, will these be suitable if I need a 1kw psu? Not sure about the science behind it, but 1kw is a lot more than the 650ish I use at the moment, so just being over cautious.. if I blow something, example being the motherboard, it would be expensive to replace, I got very lucky on mine. Thanks for any advice in advance Sorry again for the long post.
  2. Forgot to add my ideal price will be around $1,500 prefer 1000 dollars or less for the CPU and motherboard total as I will be reason the RAM and storage and my case which is a be quiet pure base 600 in my current PSU is the EVGA 1300 watt 80+ gold ratedthought I had to get for my r925 X2 graphics card back in 2014 LOL because they needed like 30 amp 12 volt rails LOL Considering upgrading my whole entire system from a 5960x with 16 gigs of ddr4 memory rate of speed 2133 megahertz which I can overclock 2400 megahertz and I'll be reusing the storage the nvme drive and the 3x10 terabyte hard drives I would like to keep Intel as my main choice for processor as my hard drive setup is on a raid 5 on an rst controller also next requirement I would need is to make sure it has at least 40 PCI lanes because I have a 16x graphics card that I will reuse for now in a few 1X pci-e cards I don't personally know from knowledge if onboard Wi-Fi and USB 3 count towards PCI Lanes or not but I wouldn't mind buying a cheaper motherboard does not have it but chances are if the system is going to be x299 imma have to buy a mid-range to high and motherboard that's probably going to have it but I would at least like 24 pcie Lanes at the minimum
  3. Im new to overclocking and decided after a while to try and overclock my 5960x, I know its an older CPU but im trying to get the most out of it for now. Ive enabled the XMP profile on my G.Skills Ram to push it upto 2800mhz from the stock, this changed the BLCK Frequency to 127.3 and i've set all cores to what I thought was a modest 33, so effectively 4.2ghz according to the BIOS. Occasionally it looks like my 64gb of ram does not pick up and goes down to 48gb for whatever reason, I read somewhere turning up DRAM voltage sometimes helps which is what I did but its a bit flaky (put it up to 1.3v). Ive left everything else at Auto. Ive taken a few screenshots of my BIOS and my computer in windows at idle and just using the CPUID stress test and it seems like the temperatures are very high even at idle, this is with the AIO on Extreme (it cant get any higher/louder than it is). My room tempreture generally sits at around 20 degrees celsius. Sorry for the long winded thread, any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Haswell-E 5960x Asus X99-WS G.Skills 64gb DDR4 2800mhz with Xmp profile enabled Corsair H110GT 280mm, AIO Corsair 750d Case
  4. Are Ryzen 1800x/1800 worth it over 5960x(box pack/New) and asus rampage 5 extreme combo(used) both for 570$ from a friend who is selling it? I'll be using the PC for gaming, photo/video editing.
  5. I was pleasantly surprised by winning a i7-5960x CPU. Thank you, Intel! I would like to build a gaming PC, so I believe it should cover other tasks like video editing, photo editing etc. I would be happy with a CPU frequency of about 4.4GHz. I have a modest budget, so I am looking for the best value for money. Yes, I know that is sort of an oxymoron building an X99 on the cheap. J Here is what I have: · Intel i7-5960X - WOHOO thank you Intel!! · Asus X99-A/USB3.1 · Corsair 650W PSU · 256GB Velociraptor Drive · Case · $200 Amazon gift card – Thank you mom! · Video Card from an old PC, good enough for now. · Most importantly, support from my lovely wife to buy the other pieces I need to finish the project! Here is what I need: RAM I am trying to decide between buying something that has a high clock speed, higher latency and higher cost vs lower clock speed, latency and cost. I know that 16GB is fine for my current needs but should I get 32GB to “future proof” my system? I am considering the following: · G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM 3000 CL15 (15-15-15-35) at 1.35V $123 @ Amazon · Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz CL15 (15-17-17-35) at 135v $109.99 @ Amazon · Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 DRAM 2133MHz C13 (13-15-15-28) at 1.2V $100 @ Amazon Cooling Here I am torn between buying a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and the Noctua. Will the 212 Evo do a good enough job or am I wasting my time with it? · Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO $28 @ Amazon · Noctua NH-D15 6 heatpipe with Dual NF-A15 140mm fans $66 @ Amazon Here is what I want: Gen3 M.2 drive · Haven’t done any research on this yet, but I know I want a fast OS drive. Better Case · Might move to the need column if the Noctua cooler is the winner and it won’t fit. Noctua Case fans · If I stay with the current case I would at least want better case fans. GPU · I am currently leaning to a NVidia 1060; my screen is a 1920 x 1080 TV so I don’t need SLI or anything that fancy. I do play AAA titles, so a good frame rate with some eye candy is desirable. Am I crazy, way off base or right on the money? Please let me know.
  6. Greetings my good friends! I have a question regarding overclocking. I do own an Intel i7 5960X and I am overclocking it. It's running great but I would like to have some advice from OC specialists. I am overclocking my processor at 4.5 GHz with the voltage being automatically regulated. I'm using AIRCOOLING (Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3) The temps are (in Celsius) - Approximately 32 when room is cold, 45 when it's warm 45 when gaming (BF1 Ultra 1080p), 55 when it's warm. 60 rendering (1080p60 FPS from fraps master file to 40 mbits bitrate) - 70 when it's warm Streaming temps are about the same (while playing a game on top of it of course). Here are the details of the processor and temps / core "live": http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2017/01/1483899429-untitled.png Here is my full PC Build: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2017/01/1483899771-2.png OS: Windows 10 Pro - 64 Bits Thank you by advance for your help! Happy new year Chibibowa
  7. Hi Guys! First of all I wish everyone reading this happy Christmas and holidays in general. After two years of just using my ThinkPad as mine and the whole family's main driver, I think that it's time for an upgrade. The PC should be future proof for at least the next 5 years. The only things I'd change would be the ssd (if there's need for more), the ram (same here) and the gpu (it's used for AAA titles in 1440p). My only worry is the mainboard. I personally would prefer a Asus X99 Deluxe/Rampage V or an MSI XPower Gaming Titanium. The reasons are the wider connectivity and the better and more attractive build quality. And excuse me for any possible orthography or grammar mistakes. 8. So, I'm kind of a rookie when it comes to ocing my rig, but it's more of a necessity because my GPU is screwed up, and I need to improve my render time on Blender and other softwares I use. I'm running the cpu at 4.5ghz 1.3v, left the uncore ratio on auto to change it later, didn't notice any instability in Aida64, but when I run any benchmark like cinebench, the results drops awfully bad. At first, on 3.0ghz it gave me 1809 points on cinebench, after OC at 4.5 I got only 800ish points. Can anyone give me a hand on it? my setup i7 5960x Gigabyte GA-X99 gaming g1 16gb ram GTX 660 ti 3gb
  9. Hi, Will using the i7 5960x with RTX 2080 bottleneck the performance? I am in the process of updating my system and planning to keep my old 5960x processor.
  10. I have a 3year old pc with i7 5960x processor, 32gb corsair vengeance ram, corsair h100i cooling, gtx980 sli. I need to replace my motherboard due to some fault. Since I will be building a new rig soon I need the cheapest but reliable mobo for this computer. Can anyone recommenda good and cheap mobo.
  11. I have been using this cooler for little over 3 years now for my i7 5960x. I am planning to change a few components in my current rig and wanted to know if I should change it or keep it?
  12. Hello I Have ASUS RAMPGAE V EXTREME Motherboard . My Processor 5960X Stop working . i need replacement and cant find it locally . can someone tell me best match from xeon processor to work directly on my motherboard . have 32 GB DDR4 2666MHX RAM . waiting for suggestion .
  13. Hi guys, I just bought an i7 5960X and overclocked it using the bios. I managed to get 4.5GHZ @ 1.20V with temps at 45c idle and 75c under full stress for 15 minutes using RealBench. The CPU is paired with 64GB of DDR4 @ 3000MHZ XMP. CPU Strap is running at 125 due to the RAM so my multiplier is 36.
  14. *How much life do you think this 5th gen cpu has left? *How much do you think this will be able to support the incoming new gen gpu? *How much it will cost if i sell it ? or maybe keep it (not worth to sell). Games/multitasking/SLI more than anything. Thanks.
  15. The Compunator V.2 This is pretty much my "dream pc" from few years ago, I couldn't afford all this at the time so here it is, bit late, but still here Parts i've upgraded to slowly, core parts are mostly bought used (GPU, CPU, RAM, PSU). For now i'm waiting to swap the case again, Define R6 Gunmetal TG has yet to arrive in Finland. Planning to swap the 240mm radiator for a 360/420 radiator or maybe cramming 3 rads into the R6, also thinking of switching to EK's Supermacy Evo Full Nickel at the same time to fit the "theme". Current HW configuration CPU: Intel i7-5960x 4,5Ghz 1,28vcore Motherboard: Asus X99-E WS USB/3.1 Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury 32Gb 2400Mhz DDR4 (Black) GPU: Asus Titan X Maxwell SSD's: Samsung M.2 960 Evo 250Gb & OCZ 480Gb Trion 100 HDD's: Seagate Barracuda 1Tb + 2x 500Gb Current case: Corsair 750D Airflow Edition. PSU: Silverstone Strider Gold S 850W Teh RGB: DeepCool 350 Magnetic led strips Other: Akasa M.2 PCIe x4 Adapter (problems with the MB m.2 slot), Silverstone Braided Black Cables for 24pin, 4+4pin & 2 x 6+2pin PCIe. Watercooling configuration CPU Block: EK Supermacy EVO Plexi + Nickel GPU Block: Watercool Heatkiller IV XL Acrylic Black + Backplate Res & Pump: EK-XRES D5 PWM (250mm + EK-Res X3 Multiport Top) Fittings: EK 13/10mm Silver Compression fittings, 90° adapters & T-Splitter, Alphacool Valve, Adaptors, Plugs & Pass trough Temp sensor fitting Tubing & Coolant : EK DuraClear 9,5/12,7mm & EK CryoFuel Blue. Radiators: Alphacool NexXxoS Full Copper 360mm + 240mm 30mm thick Fans: EK Vardar 120's x5, Corsair AF-140's x3 Monochromatic theme Aim of this build was to be very monochromatic themed with led illumination & coolant color differentiating the looks, PrimoChill Vue coolant would fit perfectly but it's not meant for this high wattage, almost 24/7 running build. I love the Asus X99 Worksation board looks, ofc it has other great features, like proper VRM cooling, USB 3.1 & alot of expandability/connectivity. I would have gone for the EK waterblock for GPU too but sadly I didnt find any in stock, but Watercool Heatkiller block does the job and I like the backplate on it. Alot has been copied from Corsair 750D owners club builds when it comes to stuff like mounting the reservoir. Building experience Building experience in Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow edition was quite nice, ample room for working around with the custom loop, cable management is bit lacking compared to the Define R5 I used earlier with the same loop configuration, but better than previous, Phanteks Enthoo Evolv TG that was very tight fit for the radiators & res (140 version at the time). I know it's a older design with main points being cabletie points and rubber grommets with radiator support limited by three 5.25 bays (and lots of pcie expansion slots, hence the full tower size) but I couldn't help myself missing the cable straps and full coverage dust filters found on previous cases, 750D does not have a bottom mounted dust filter, causing high amounts of dust to enter from the bottom radiator intake. PSU filter makes vibrating noises when fully mounted and pushed to it's position. Radiator mounting was easy, not much hassle excluding having to lay the case on it's side to attach the bottom radiator (really big tower for my small table), reservoir & pump combo was bit tricky to mount, It can be mounted between the 5.25 bays and motherboard with EK Res X3 mounts that fit trough some pre-drilled holes, but I ended up attaching it to the 750D's drive cages mounted to the top position right under 5.25 bays with some screw holes aligning nicely to attach the res & pump combo onto it. It still fits four regular 3.5inch drives (3 mounted now), the mounting screw and nut interfere with two of the drive caddies but thats no biggie. The EK DuraClear tubing package I bought the first time (3m per package) was a very easy fit with the fittings using hot water and slight streching w/ pliers to open them up over the barbs, and the compression ring screwed in nicely. Same cannot be said for the second batch DuraClear package I got few months later, I had some serious trouble with trying to tighten the compression fittings to the same point which they fitted nicely in with the first batch of tubing. Airflow, Radiator Placement & Draining System Compared to the previous cases I have used with this build, it's far ahead in terms of airflow (yes not really comparable, all have different target groups) with perforated front panel and no closed off top panels (Looking at you Evolv TG ). Two front 140mm fans provide plenty airflow and the EK Vardar 120's are plenty enough to push/pull air trough the radiators, albeit being greyish and plain I like the look of these fans and they perform well for their intended purposes. I have currently mounted the 240mm radiator on the bottom 240/280 spot taking in unflitered fresh air with the Alphacool Valve & EK T-Splitter handling draining, also Alphacool Temp sensor passtrough fitting somewhere there, front 140mm fans are sucking in air trough front filter, 360mm radiator on top radiator position exhausting (fits 360mm effortlessly but requires 5.25 bay removal to fit proper 420mm rads), and single Corsair AF-140 in the back exhausting. (TL;DR : 4 intaking, 4 exhausting) Development Over time It has been pretty rough and problematic over time while building & upgrading this pc, some big ones to mention; Titan X(m) shuntmod failure, simple liquid metal over the shunt had corroded the solder off, causing the shunt to almost completely fall off = black screen when drivers load Fixed by resoldering the shunt back, result for my first soldering job was only 5-6% "smaller" power target, slight misreading from the shunt that is. Motherboard & CPU fried, had a Asus X99-Pro/3.1 that either had a capacitor or VRM failure, resulting into a dead motherboard & CPU (at that time it was 5820K) There was no way I could fix that, I dont have the equipment nor skill to fix such things. CPU was covered by insurance and the motherboard is still to date in Asus warranty service (2-3 months?) All in all it's been rough Pictures (Currently too lazy to clean up the dust and table + repositioning the led strips. Will add as soon as I get my ass off the chair get some proper lighting to help my op5) Edit 1: Just to illustrate the loop until I can get decent looking photos of it Excuse my English, it's not my first language, feel free to tell your opinion about the build & what you would change about it.
  16. I have a 5820k six core Haswell-E CPU that I want to push to the limits while allowing it to be stable enough to be practical in everyday use and gaming. I use an ASRock X99 Professional Gaming i7 motherboard, which I consider to be a pretty good mid tier board for overclocking. As of now, I am running a somewhat unorthodox overclock setting where I use per core as opposed to all core overclocking with adaptive voltage as opposed to override voltage with L1 LLC at 1.42v core, 1.3v cache, and 2.15v input. I have it set up so that only one active core can go up to 4.7 GHz while 5 active cores can go up to 4.6 GHz and 6 active cores to 4.5 GHz, as I discovered that pushing all cores to its limits is somewhat impractical for the use case I have. System agent offset is also around +0.3, any lower and some of my RAM will disappear from my system. My CPU is currently being cooled by a 360mm all in one and the fans are set to max out at 80C, which is actually a fail safe that ASRock put in my particular board that can be adjusted but not disabled, so overheating is not really a concern. However, I still don’t want to go ham on the voltages and potentially fry my CPU just from turning it on, so what is a borderline suicide overclock voltage that you would recommend before it is considered kissing my silicon goodbye? I definitely don’t want to go above 1.45v on core or 2.2v on input unless I know it is safe. At 3.5 GHz cache, what is a reasonable voltage to run it at? I think 1.3v is a tad overkill and I can potentially make more headroom by turning cache voltage down. It was what ASRock set it to in its overclock presets. >inb4 people say 1.35v is max safe voltage also I am increasing voltage as opposed to lowering clock speeds because I’m too stubborn to settle for less speed. my system spat out a clock watchdog timeout when I played rainbow six siege so maybe I should lower clocks... afaik when you get whea uncorrectable error is when you have too low voltages for a particular clock speed, but I only got that once, before I bumped up voltages. is this a lost cause? also mods, where do I post for overclocking tips?
  17. Hello! I have a quick question about the hexa-core and up i7s intel offers. I'm a new content creator and gamer trying to get into a youtube "carrer". It's just something i've always wanted to do because I find it fun, but I don't really plan on making MONEY off of it as it's not a necessity for me. I game, record my gameplay, use a browser at the same time, so I decided to look into an enthusiast grade CPU because I know that the 6700k isin't really for that. My question is, is it worth it to go for the 5960X, 6900k, or 6950X for what I'm trying to do? So far I have bought: 2 x GTX 1080s 64GB 3200 MHz RAM 1000W Corsair PSU (I have lots of fittings and hardline tubing, you know where I am going with this) Thanks!
  18. Current Build CPU: Intel i7 5960x CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H115i Motherboard: Asus X99-A Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB 2400mhz Graphics Card: Asus GTX 980 Ti - Reference Card SSD: Intel 750 series 400GB PCIe NVMe HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200rpm PSU: Seasonic X-series 750W Accessories: D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCIe adapter This is my current setup, and I solely use it for work - AutoDesk 3ds Max. Last Thursday, I put the windows on Sleep; wakeup in the morning to find the motherboard died - Code00. I checked in a local hardware store/repair shop, and they confirmed that the motherboard is died. I had this build for a Year and 4 months now; the motherboard had some minor hiccups* along the way, that I always overlooked. I've been a Loyal Customer to Asus for the last 10 years, and never had any problems with any of their previous motherboards, but this one has just got me going ................ Now, I'm in search for a new motherboard. I have my mind between Asus X99-E WS and ASRock X99 WS but I'm open to other suggestions. So, please help me pick a new motherboard. The hiccups along the way: - Whenever I unplug the computer from the wall outlet, if I'm leaving the house for a couple of days; It never boots again successfully resulting in crashing the windows, and me having to reinstall the windows again. - On Thursday morning ( The day the motherboard died ) I checked randomly my RAM usage while rendering, and I've found that it's only reading 24GB of RAM for some unknown reason. P.S. I never OC any of the hardware. I have now idea if the CPU is died or not, since neither I nor the hardware store have another X99 motherboard to test it.

  20. Greetings! I'm thinking of building a video editing computer, in which I'm still not sure of what CPU to use. I've looked into several benchmarks and there's a bit of a difference between the 5820k and the 5960X but I'm not sure if the 5960X would actually be worth the extra money. I'm not going to record or upload anything in 4K. My videos are usually around 15-20 minutes long at 1080p and in my current laptop, using Sony Vegas, it takes around 3 to 4 hours to render one video alone. With this new build I'm planning on getting, I'll be using Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop. I'd like to know which CPU would be the best choice in this case, considering I'll keep on rendering 15-20 minutes long videos at 1080p, and how long it'd take for each processor to render one video. Something around the 30 minutes would be perfect already, if it'd take less, even better. Also, considering I won't be rendering anything at 4K, which would be the best choice for a Graphics Card? Should I go for a 980, Titan X or 1080 anyway, or would a 970 be enough? I'd also like to know if it is recommended to overclock any of these CPUs and if so, up to how many GHz? I've never done overclocking before. This brings another question: Is it a good idea to have two separate computers, one for gaming and recording and the other for video editing (using the aforementioned software) alone? Because I'm also torn between having two separate computers or only one where I'd do everything in. This is mainly because of another question about CPUs: i7-5820k vs i7-5960X vs i7-6700k. Since apparently the latter is the best one for gaming but the two first ones are best for editing and rendering, I don't know which one I'd choose if I were to build a single computer for all these tasks. I feel like in one hand it'd be good to have separate computers, it'd mean more storage exclusively for raw files and rendered videos (Ill be using 2 SSDs and 1 HDD) and it'd also have more free space which wouldn't slow it down. Plus, while it rendered, I could keep using my other computer. If I have everything in one, I'd probably need more space, rendering could take more time, it could slow down a bit more the computer and it might not allow me to do alot while it renders the video. Then again, I could be speaking utter garbage, as I never owned a powerful computer and I don't know its true limits. I'll also be using 16GB DDR4-2400 (4x4GB on the 5820k/2960X and 2x8GB on the 6700k). As for a motherboard, should I go for a Asus X99-A? TL;DR - Rendering 15-20 minutes long 1080p videos, how long would it take using a 5820k and a 5960X? Is the latter worth the extra money? Should I OC any of them? And should I have two separate PCs, one for gaming and one for editing? Which CPU should I choose in that case? Should I use a Asus X99-A Motherboard? Thanks in advance!
  21. Well Hello everyone, I would like to ask you guys first of all your opinion of my system, than would you recommend overclocking (if yes than how much and either or both CPU and GPU) ??? System info: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/4RR4qk
  22. First post, but you gotta start somewhere. Hoping you can help me with two specific issues. Overclocking failed No keyboard detected Back in January 2015 I purchased the following rig: CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X Extreme Unlocked, S 2011-3, Haswell-E, 8 Core, 3.0GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo, 40PCI-E Lane, 20MB Cache, Retail (Link) GPU: 2 x 4GB EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0, 7010MHz GDDR5, GPU 1266MHz, Boost 1367MHz, 2048 Cores, 3x DP, 1x DVI-I, 1x HDMI (Link) RAM: 64GB (8x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black PC4-19200 (2400), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 14-16-16-31, XMP 2.0, 1.2V (Link) Storage: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO Basic SSD SATA III 6Gb/s 7mm Slim 3-core MEX Controller Read 540MB/s Write 520MB/s 512MB 97K IOPS (Link) 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 3 6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Cache 8ms OEM NCQ (Link) Case: Silverstone SST-FT01S USB 3.0, Silver Fortress Tower ATX Mid Case w/o PSU (Link) Motherboard: OEM X99-A ASUS (Link) Monitor: 27" Asus PG278Q ROG Swift G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Monitor WHQD DisplayPort 2560x1440 350cd/m2 80M:1 1ms 2xUSB 3.0 Ports (Link) PSU: Only RM750W Modular Gold Silent PSU (Link) Cooling: Entry level water cooling block for CPU Apologies if some of the links aren't working now. They are 18 months old. The purchase was from a reputable company in the UK (which is where I'm based), who also did the build for me. In hindsight I wish I'd built it myself. This was a very high-end rig due to the requirements for high-end gaming but mainly the mathematical computational modelling work I do (neural networks, etc.). As far as I could manage this was a balanced machine that provided the best of both worlds. The provider did all the initial overclocking (non-GPU), including RAM. However, on first boot the machine went into overclocking failed and long story short I eventually turned all overclocking off. I later understood that with this particular Asus X99-A motherboard, overclocking the RAM with all slots occupied doesn't work very well. Despite this, I still struggle with two issues. Firstly, although the post is reasonably long probably due to the graphics cards and RAM, 1 in 4 times my post takes best part of a minute and eventually comes back with 'no keyboard detected'. Other times, I get 'overclocking failed' despite no overclocking. I have updated the bios to the latest version. I am keen to provide more information if necessary but curious to learn if anyone else has experienced related issues with this mobo and/or CPU set-up? Has anyone else maxed out the 8 RAM slots? I am keen to re-overclock this machine but I can barely get it 100% stable on factory settings. *Edit* I have tried the keyboard in different USB 2.0 and different 3.0 ports. No change. Overclocking failed issues are intermittent and around 25% of the time. Thanks for any help in advance.
  23. Everyone, this thread was created for anyone concerned about potential bottlenecks between components. Post any processor, ram, motherboard, video card combo and let's discuss optimal, NOT compatible! For instance, I don't care what motherboards my processor, ram, gpu is compatible with if the full potential of these components are not available through this motherboard. Why drop serious coin on one component if this component is fractionalized or bottlenecked by another component. The inspiration for this thread is inspired by the below...which i still don't have good any motherboard choices. Any other bottleneck concerns are welcome in this thread. Original question: best motherboard for 5930k? I was looking at pulling the trigger on MSI x99 sli Krait board. to match up with i7 5930k processor. Now this got me thinking that I don't want to create a bottleneck. Just because a board is compatible doesn't mean it's optimal...correct? I don't need a lot of extras I just want to maximize the 5930k processor and also want to be compatible if i decide to upgrade to 5960x later...but i'm on a budget now. Are there any more affordable boards that won't create the bottleneck your referring to above and are still excellent boards?. Thanks!!!!!
