[Context: skip if you don't care] Back in 2015 I built my first PC, at the time intended mostly for amateur music production (Cubase), rocking an i7-4790 in an Asus Z97-A motherboard, as I had no interest in overclocking but the Z97 board had good features and I/O for the price. I recently upgraded from a heavily overclocked Asus GT 1030 (story for another time... if anybody is interested) to an Nvidia T600 (basically a cut-down 40 W version of the GTX 1650). I had been feeling the CPU's age for a while now, but lifting that very hard GPU bottleneck made me really want to squeeze a bit more performance. I've been running the 4790 for as long as I can remember with 103 BCLK with a 0,025 V offset, as suggested by the "Optimization" tool in AI Suite 3. This has been perfectly stable for 6 years with stock cooling, and I recently upgraded to a Noctua NH-U12A (silent operation is pretty important when recording stuff). So after some days of reading about BCLK overclocking, I decided to see how far it would go: "Look, mom, I'm topping the charts for i7-4790 performance! You must be so proud of me!" I tested up to 107 BCLK with no change in voltage, and according to 3DMark CPU Profile (perhaps not a "real" benchmark, but certainly an indication) I saw pretty sizeable gains with still very reasonable temps. At 107.5 my computer froze up shortly after boot when trying to start a bunch of applications, so I got somewhat scared and left it there for the moment. I've been running at 105 (4.2 GHz) with perfect stability, so... I kinda upgraded to a 4790K for free . I want to keep trying to get higher OCs, but I got a bit scared from all the horror stories about broken SDDs and fried boot sectors... So, here come some newbie questions: I've read people talk of how dangerous BCLK OC is, how it can corrupt/brick your drives and thus you should stick to multiplier OC. But of course, that's not an option for me, it's either BCLK or nothing (boring!). My question is: does anybody have any evidence of BCLK overclock actually breaking things, without applying excessive voltages or heat? In all things OC it's sometimes hard to tell what's concern from fabricated scaremongering... I know Haswell BCLK will overclock also the PCIe lanes and that can make devices stop appearing or refuse to boot, but that's easily fixed by pulling back the OC: my concern is actual permanent damage to hardware or data. Would it be reasonable to, if 107.5 BCLK is indeed unstable, ramp up the voltage offset by 0.0125 V? (e.g. see if it's stable at +0.037) I haven't touched DRAM frequency yet (I know lowering it would improve the chances for a stable OC) or cache ratio or anything else, so any suggestions are welcome! That's all... If I see interest from y'all, I'll keep you updated!

Specs i7-4790 ASUS B85 PLUS G.skill 4x4 Ram ASUS STRIX 970 San disk ultra ssd 128 GB Cooler master V650 then swapped to Gigabyte P650B I’ve been having a lot of problems with my PC recently and made the mistake on the title. I did the standard process of elimination. I did everything by the book. first was PSU change. It booted fine once and I used to opportunity to save all the necessary stuff on my PC. But after awhile it just started powering up fan spin but no display or HDD LED activity. Next is boot outside the case with one ram (I tried each stick individually) stick and just cpu cooler. No Success. Then I tried using a GA-H97-HD3 motherboard but the results from that mobo was 2-3 second fan spin and it shuts off. Makes me wonder if that motherboard was bad from the start. The only thing left that I can deduce is the CPU. I tried delidding it since I don’t really have much to lose at this point and that didn’t fix the issue either. Due to my earlier mistake I’m scared if I bricked my board. But the reaction it does is exactly the same before I did the CLEAR RTC pin mistake. My plan now it to probably buy a 4690 to replace the 4790 if it really was the problem. I find it very unlikely that all 4 of my ram sticks are bad. Any advice you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated. I feel like this PC took a good portion of my life just from me trying to fix it.

I currently have an i7-4790 paired with an EVGA GTX 1060 SC and 8GB of RAM. I am considering upgrading to the Ryzen 5 1600 soon. Will there be a performance drop in upgrading from an i7 to an R5? I mostly play games (GTA V, Flight Sim, Truck Sim etc.), do light video and photoediting work and Revit.

Hi, I have a question. My i7 4790ks temps are really highOn idle, it stays around 57-58C which is totally insane. While gaming in Watch dogs 2 my cpu temp creeped up to go the mid 80s(85-87 C), while in GTA it stayed around 81-83C. The question is, WHY?I have a stock cooler, the cpu isn't overclocked or under clocked. My setup is:i7 4790k(4.0ghz), sapphire nitro+oc rx 480 4 gb.16 gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, Ocz 500W psu, Corsair force cm 500 casingAsus z97 pro mobo.Ive also just reapplied The thermal paste, and the fan is properly installed. Replacing the paste didn't improve temps by that much. The side panel is open, and have one fan installed at the back of the case for blowing hot air out.Also. My ambient temps around 28C, humidity around 83% ,precipitation around 34%.Can anyone PLEASE guide me as to what IS wrong. Any help would be appreciated. I don't suppose I can give to back to where I purchased it from since my father bought it 3 years ago, he never noticed the temps. Please, any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

Best silent cooler for i7 4790 (non-k) and not a large size
Guest posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So i will be upgrading to a i7 4790(non-k), and i don't want to use stock cooler since on my old cpu it was damn loud and annoying. What's a good Cooler that will keep it quiet and cool without being super large. I was looking at the Noctua NH-U12S is it a good choice? -
I had an i7-4790(Non K) I'm Planning To Buy an RTX 2060, but will the proccesor bottleneck the RTX 2060? If Yes how badly is it going to bottleneck?

Hi, I have the below specs i7 4790 Sapphire rx580 8gb special edition @1430mhz 16GB Ram 1600mhz Thermaltake smart se 730w My gpu usage drops to zero very frequantly, and is extremely volatile, rarely stays @ 100%, im having sluggish gaming as well, the screen doesnt seem smooth, i have let say minor fps drops, for example i might be gettings 80fps on far cry 5 and then when i turn my mouse the other frams drops to 50! I know that frams drops but not 25 30 fps in just a scene!! All set to high performance, no thermal throttle, temps are fine, all up to date, benchmark results are good as well. When i overclock my gpu to lets say 1470 or more i get zero performance increase, and i get even more sluggish gaming, lower frams!! Can this due to my psu which i know its bad?

Hello there, i currently have a i5 4670, r9 290x and 16GB 1600 Mhz and i was wanting an upgrade to a GTX 1070, but ive seen in many places that my i5 will bottleneck the GPU, so i was searching and here in Brasil i can find a i7 4790 OEM new for around 351$ while a brand new i5 8600k or ryzen 2700x here costs 405$ and i would still have to up the MOBO and memory(DDR4 is very expensive here), so i was wondering if the i7 4790+gtx 1070 i would be ok for the next 3-4 years of 1080p 60 FPS gaming

I have the following rig,, i7 4790 RX 580 @1460core 16GB Ram 1600mhz Display 2560x1080 @80hz While running games like shadow of war, BO4, Far Cry 5, SOTTR, i noticed that CPU usage is very low max 50% and sometimes average of 35% in game. Temps are also low no exceeding 45c using slient mode on a cheap xigmatek whiz cooler with 2 fans, even if i stop both fans temps will remain the same and low. Im affraid that my CPU is having a problem and not delivering full power. I ran cinbench r15 and firestrike and scores are normal (765 on R15 and 10500 on firestrike). Cpu voltage is set to auto (0.965v), all cores are locked at 3.8ghz. Even when i reach full 80FPS while gaming thr cpu seems to be idle, im affraid that my cpu is not delivering full capability on other games that why i have low fps on other games. Power saving options are disabled.

Hi, I have Thermaltake Smart SE 730w PSU which is i know its not good psu, but can it power my rig? am having black screens momentary when trying to overclock the gpu. I dont understant required Amps needed, or single or double rail.. The guide says that the 12v rail will provide 57amps, is this enough? My cpu i7 4790 draws around 50watts, my gpu draws around 200 watts and sometimes reaching 230 watts. Is the psu enough.? I dont want to damage any components. Thanks,

I have I7 4790 @3.8ghz RX580 8G @1470mhz 16GB DDR3 1600mhz Lg 29uc88 2560x1080@75 I noticed while gaming that GPU utilization or usage is constantly droping or fluctuates al9ts while heavy gaming like in black ops 4 which is cuasing annoying micro stutter. Frames are still within freesync range. I tried multiple drivers using DDU after each install. Currently using version 10.5.1. The stutter even happen in small games like two point hospital but less annoying as its not fast paced! How can i resolve this? Note: first ever AMD GPU and definitely the last, you get what you pay for.

Alright, so I have an i7-4790 with a MSI GTX 1080 8gb and it produces about a 10% bottleneck. I upgraded to the 1080 from a MSI GTX 1060 6gb. I have been playing Bo4, Overwatch, and Siege and getting about 110-130fps on medium settings at 1080p (Only played Bo4 since I got a 1080p 144Hz monitor). I had a 1440p 144hz monitor before and I got around 60-80fps on medium-high settings. I was wondering if I put the 1060 back in to reduce the bottleneck, would my framerates improve at 1080p or even with the bottleneck am I getting more than the 1060 can produce?

Hi, Lately i noticed some weird things on rig I7 4790 RX580 8G sapphire nitro+ special edition 16GB Ram LG 29uc88 2560x1080@75 All drivers are updated. I noticed that i gain minimal FPS and sometimes not when drastically lowering graphics from ultra to hight till low. Like in AC odyssey i lowered everything, including field of view it looks like crap now and barley getting 40FPS. Same goes to warhammer 2, literally zero gain between ultra and medium. Other games as well, whether i play on high or low i grt the same performance... GPU usage is almost all the time @100%, where CPU usage is around 50% -70%. Im also not gertings the same FPS in game compared to the benchmarks on youtube for the same games and settings! What could be the issue,? Noting that i recently installed fresh copynof windows. Temps are within range, no throttling

Hi,. Recently i installed fresh copy of windows and changed my cpu cooler to xigmatek whiz double fan and using arctic mx paste. My temps were usually around 60s when gaming, after the new changes my cpu temps are in 40s, i even ran prime95 and still in 40s! Barley reaching 50s!! CPU fans are set to silent mode, When i stopped cpu fans with my hand cpu temps reached 74 only!! These temps are way low, could it be my cpu not running as it suppose to!! Could this be the reason for games not gaining any FPS increase when lowering settings!! Like AC odyssey i get around 40 FPS and sometimes lower whether high or low settings. CPU usuage are around 50s %, when i played BO4 beta the usage were around 90s but now in 50s? I can still run it smoothly with some stuttering . I7 4790 RX580 8GB 16GB RAM Tried multiple bios versions as well, all drivers are up to date.

Hi, I recently bought rx580 OC to 1480mhz, with i7 4790 and 16GB DDR3 1600MHZ.. I noticed on couple of games that i play mostly on high to ultra that gaming becomes slow and sluggish in certain scenes. I downgraded few settings to medium and i got smoother gaming although i got the same frames capped at 73 on a 75hz monitor. No FPS changes, no framtime spikes, just smoother gaming, what could have caused this? Games affected. BO4 R6S SOTTR

Ever since Upgrading to 8086k from 4790k a week ago, I've been getting a very bizarre form of stuttering. The PC will stick, but the audio will screw up like it's crashing (the jittery buzz that a BSOD usually makes). However, the PC does this for a split second, then will usually go back to normal. Sometimes, however, the framerate takes a couple seconds to get out of the twenties. Things it is definitely not: - a bottleneck. The CPU is better than before, and I have the same graphics card. - temps. My CPU is around 65 after a 30 minute aida stress test.

Hi, so im having some latency issues with my i7 4790k https://imgur.com/dV1qxyl . I suspect the issue has to do with the intergrated graphics, as when I try to bench test my i7 4790k, it shows a much lower latency (using cpuz to benchmark/intel extreme tuning ulitity). However when I try to benchmark the integrated graphics card (intel HD graphics 4600) using Intel's extreme tuning utility, all I get is a "The Graphics Stress Test Failed". https://imgur.com/ZdnwLWX. Any chance does anyone know of any ways to get this back to working condition? Or do I simply have to live with it till I can purchase a new cpu/mobo/ram? (I've already tried multiple os's, drivers, etc)

Hi there, I recently got a set of 2 x 8gb Corsair Vengence 2400MHz RAM for my Z97 based system, (i7 4790K and Gigabyte Z97 D3H) I enabled XMP and realised a great performance boost in my Flight Simulator (P3D) by about 20FPS, seems hard to believe I know. All was going well for 20 minutes until I had a BSOD. So I decided to dial back the XMP profile back to 1333MHz. Launched again and everything is fine. I then tried a manual overclock of 2000MHz, which was more stable and for longer, say around 40 minutes. I'm pretty new to overclocking RAM so I would like some help. Even to gain stability at 2000MHz would be fantastic as there was no real difference between 2000MHz and 2400MHz on my machine. Many Thanks!, Jamie

Hello everyone I am planning on upgrade. I have chosen the Predator x34 as my monitor and I wanna pair it with a nice GPU so I can push those 100 FPS. But there is a problem with this upgrade I will blow all my money on the monitor and GPU and I dont have the money for a cpu too. So my question is: Is the bottleneck from my cpu gonna be big or it can wait another year. Also one more question is the x35 VA and is it worth waiting to buy it instead of the x34? Thanks

Planning an upgrade from my FX-4300 finally. Going to a i7-4790K and I think I have settled on the MB's in the title to stay within budget. Reading all the specs and comparisons I dont see a lot of difference. I have a GTX 970 and may do some mild CPU OC'ing but nothing extreme. Is there anything that makes one of these boards a better choice, or is it down to color preference?

Hey all, I have a 4790 (Non-K) with a Cryorig H7 CPU cooler (only one fan) and was wondering whether these temperatures were acceptable. Idle: 30-40 degrees Celcius Under load: has gone up to 65 degrees while playing CS:GO I was just wanting to know if these temps were ok. Thanks All

Hey guys, I just swapped out my H97-Gaming 3 mobo to Z97-Gaming 5 mobo (both Gigabtye) and now my CPU is running at full speed 3999MHz even on idling. It also produce tonnes of heat while playing Skyrim on SLI (Highest core temp reaches 91 C) which is significantly higher than both of my GTX970 G1 Gaming. (77 c & 72 c respectively) And the clock speed went up to ranging 4009~4063MHz which I think it's supposed to be capped at 3999MHz for 4790 non-k CPU May I know is there anything wrong with my bios or is it normal? Thanks in advance

I'm wondering whether it'd be worth spending the extra $30 for the unlocked core. I have an ASUS Z97-A motherboard, and a Hyper 212 cooler(I'm upgrading from a Pentium G3258). It'll mainly be used for things like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and some gaming if I have the time. I'm a bit on the fence as to whether or not I'd even want to overclock it when I first get it. Now, I've seen Linus's video comparing the overclocking power of the Pentium and the 4970K, but I just don't have the money to replace it if it gets fried in the process. Still, I plan on having this CPU for a long time - assuming it doesn't die on me for no reason - and it only makes sense that I'd want to overclock it eventually to give myself more power before I inevitably have to upgrade to Skyake or whatever architecture is out when I upgrade again.

Hey guys, I really need quick advice on this. Is it possible to let say force all cores to run at 3.9 on a 4790(non k) all the time instead of turbo-ing up and down as it likes? Was hoping i could turn off the turbo boost and set its max multiplier. im using a z97 gigabyte board. thanks.
