bit of background: im trying to make a gaming laptop out of mostly desktop parts. plan to have a max power draw of 400W. only real challenge is making desktop parts run off a battery, and making that battery behave like it would in a laptop. as far as i can tell, a laptop works kinda like a UPS; if you unplug the power, it switches over to the battery without crashing the system. if you plug it back in, the battery starts to charge while the system is running. Main thing that confuses me is why even low power desktop UPS are 10x larger than even a large laptop. why do electronics that perform such a similar task have vastly different sizes? i understand they use large batteries, but from looking inside they also have monster PCBs the size of a laptop mobo. im also aware there are different types of UPS (offline/standby, online/double conversion, line interactive) and that they are suitable for different tasks dew to differences in how fast they can change to and from the batteries, and how many times they can change back and forth. apparently the cheapest version, offline, can take 100ms to change. i have no idea if thats quick enough to avoid crashing a system. i assume id need line interactive because it can change faster and it can change a larger number of times? another problem is (if ive understood correctly) a typical UPS takes AC, converts it to DC for the battery, then back to AC for the UPS output. the PSU i plan to use is DC to DC, so the conversion back to AC is unwanted in my case because id then need to add more parts to convert back to DC. is it possible to design a UPS that outputs DC? final thing is keeping it low cost and compact. im hoping i can use an external AC to DC power brick to save space inside the laptop. as for cost, im aiming for £150 at most (not including the PSU). but im hoping for more like £50. i dont know if either of those figures is realistic? TLDR: is it possible to make an AC to DC UPS for use with a 400W computer? could someone please point me in the right direction? thanks for reading. any help or advice is appreciated.

Now my personal rig : i5 6500 gtx 1060 sc evga 3gb system power 8 400w 80+ rated be quiet 8gigs ram 1 ssd 1 7.2K rpm 2 120mm fan 2 80mm my friends want to build his own and want buy my gtx 1060 3gb,also i want to move to amd rx 480. I search in reddit and other forums including manufacturers site, almost all of them recommend like 500w power supply. I also heard that rx 480 draw more power than it should.planning to get g1 gaming rx 480 8gb. but if i try to calculate using outervision's powersupply calculator it just reach 353 W which is my 400W would be enough. is it really ok if i stay at 400w because i don't want to spend more money on power supply? or should i sell my power supply to my friend also and get higher wattage ?

I recently bought a PC build, and when i try to plug in my EVGA 400w B1 to the power adapter (three pin to wall) it makes a strange ticking noise and doesn't boot up the system. The fan on the PSU doesn't even start! Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Will an fx 8320e work with a 400w power supply? other parts are: gtx 750ti 8gb ram 1tb

i recently finished building a ryzen gaming pc MOBO: MSI A320M PRO-VH PLUS CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 16gb (8gbx2) 2400mhz GPU: GIGABYTE AORUS GTX 1660 TI 6GB PSU: SMART POWER 400W 80+ BRONZE CASE: Cooler Master MB520 RGB it running just fine and no problem but i'm worried that the PSU will fry other component since in the graphic card manufacturer website they say that the recommended is 450w PSU Please Help!!

Hey all, I am starting to build in my Dan A4 SFX v3 and am really intrigued by the HDPLEX 400W due to the restrictions of the A4. Only problem is I'm a complete newbie when it comes to these types of power supplies.. Does anyone know of a good external power brick that I can use to power the 400W HDPLEX? Their website says the Dell 330W works, but won't that only supply 330W to my computer and not the full 400W? Or does that not matter? Just wondering if my PSU will be enough to run my system if I upgrade my graphics card to a GTX 1060. I would really like to not have to spend money on a new PSU but looking around various threads and sites I get the idea that I will have to do just that. Anyone? Why is it GPU clocks 0?

I am about to buy Nvidia 8800 GT and I'm concern with the power consumption of the card. I have a 400W PSU which came with my pre-build PC its named something Seasonic Electronics.

I have a stock 400W switching psu. I will be running a mid end AMD A-8, a R9 390, 2 hdds, 1 ssd, and a DVD drive. Is that enough?

I am currently using a 600W Power Supply, but I think I've gotten a way too high wattage PSU for my PC Here is my PC: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/66gWK8 Using Cooler Master's Advanced Power Supply Calculator, my PC should use around 384W. What are the negatives of having a PSU that is far past the needed wattage? I don't know if this is related, but when I first booted my PC when I built it a week ago, my AMD 860k has really high temps, even in the BIOS and at idle. It is around 70ºC at idle and close to 90ºC under load. I'm using the stock cooler and the Arctic MX-4 Thermal Paste. I plan on getting the CM Hyper 212 EVO soon.
