  1. Hi, Looking for some advice, we've just switched from a 2010 Mac pro to a Threadripper 3970x/RTX 2080 Super build with 64GB of Memory, and the switch has been poor to say the least. We're only dealing with 1080p footage but we've seen usability drop as we've moved from the Mac across to the Threadripper with an increase in dropped frames sometimes even on single clips with no effects. The reason we switched was predominantly due to the fact that the Mac was starting to struggle with 5/6 camera multi-cam footage but the Threadripper struggles to manage it even to a level on par with the 10 year old Mac. Both systems are running the same up to date version of CC and the Threadripper has NVMe SSDs for footage, whilst the Mac is still coping with HDDs. Even on exporting we're not seeing the gains we expected. We've run a number of benchmarks to make sure the HW is not the issue and they all came back with the expected performance, even a dip into DaVinci Resolve performed as expected. I know Premiere is known for poor optimization but I'd at least expect the 3970x to do better than a 10 year old Mac. Any ideas on what we could try to get a usable experience out of our new kit? and just to note we've tried fixes such as turning CUDA on/off, messing with the Nividia control panel, transcoding all h.264 footage
  2. Hello, I bought corsair vengeance rgb pro 256gb 3200MHz along with ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha and threadripper 3970X, I know that this 256GB corsair is not listed on the QVL list for this motherboard, but I had to buy it because the other RAMs were out of stock. do you think is it an issue? if it is not on the QVL? I contacted Asus and they told me it is better to buy RAMs listed on the QVL; do you think is it really an issue? Honestly sometimes I feel like adobe after effects is a bit slow to navigate into my timeline comparing to my alienware laptop with 32gb ram 2666mhz and i9-9900K and 2080 also when I turn on the [D.O.C.P] in AiTweaker to boost it to 3200Mhz windows sometimes get BOSD please any suggestion to my issue?
  3. Hi everyone, I am wondering if someone can help me here, I currently have an Intel based system with i9 7980XE, the system is mainly used for development/gaming however it’s mostly development, I’m thinking of upgrading to AMD Threadripper 3970X with ROG Strix TRX40-XE. My main concern is that Threadripper 5000 series might be released soon and not sure if it’s worth it to wait for Zen 3 or just go with Zen 2 i.e. Threadripper 3970X? Budget (including currency): £4000 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: ML/Parallel Programming Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): The build will consist of only a new motherboard and a CPU everything else is being sourced from another HED system.
  4. I’m building a high end desktop for optical design and CAD work. Ray trace optical design is very memory intensive, so I need 256GB. My question is what is the real world difference between ECC and non-ECC RAM? I have been doing this type of work for a few years on an Intel x99 system and have only encountered BSD twice. Comments and suggestions appreciated. Basic build: MOBO: ASUS TRX40-XE CPU: Threadripper 3970X RAM: 256GB GPU: Quadra RTX 6000 Boot: Samsung 980 Pro 512GB Data: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
  5. Goodmorning, I would like to create a thread for all threadripper zen2 owners just to compare the different results each of us reached. I would like to use a simple format like this: CPU TYPE: example 3960x COOLING TYPE: example ek strx40 monoblock for zenith 2 extreme + ek d5 pump + 2x360 radiators WATT ABSORBED UNDER FULL LOAD: example 400w TEMPERATURE: example 75/80 degrees Notes: - Room temperature we could say it is 25 degrees. If it is more or less extreme please specify it. - For testing please use a software to maximize your watt usage like OCCT full power test. - For watt absorbed please use hwinfo and CPU PACKAGE POWER (SMU). Thank you
  6. Hi, everyone. I have to cool an AMD Thredripper 3970x with an AIO Water Cooler. Do you think the Corsair iCUE H150i RGB PRO XT Liquid CPU Cooler is okay? And what do you think would be the best AIO cooler for tr4? Thanks, guys.
  7. Hey, this won't be much of a LOG, but I just wanted to share the build I did a few weeks ago. It is my workstation at work. The whole office is Mac based so when I started working there about two years ago I had no choice but to get used to working on macs, but this time arround my boss gave me the oportunity to go with a PC (after much debate ). Because I am sometimes required to edit on set I started out by planing for a combo of a dell XPS 17 (having a lot of thunderbolt ports was a requirement because of all the thundebolt devices we use in production) and a 3700x (I knew 5000 series was coming out and would wait for it), but in the end I was told to just get a desktop for the office and we would use my old Macbook for editing on set or just get a new one. I was expecting that I would be without a GPU for a few months, but I was very lucky to find some 3080s in stock at a local shop so the GPU was one of the first things to arrive and I had to wait about 5 weeks for the rest of the system. ( + There was a whole thing with a German computer store that didn't respond to our emails and kept ignoring our request to change the shipping address and that caused a lot of frustration.) At the same time we finally recived our 10Gb/s networking equipment and storage, so I sprinkled in some photos of our new 12-bay Synology NAS and everything that goes with it. I am sorry for the bad quality of some photos, I just took some quick snaps with my phone, sometimes it was the fastest way to share it with my friends. Here are the specs for the workstation: CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970x GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra MOBO: Gigabyte TRX40 Designare RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 128GB DDR4 3000-16 K4 PSU: Super Flower Leadex 1600W 80Plus Platinum (a bit overkill I know ) SSDs: 2x GIGABYTE AORUS SSD NVMe G4 500GB PNY XLR8 SSD CS3030 M.2 NVMe 2TB (I will remove this one because I don't need it and we will use it in an external enclosure) CASE: Fractal Design Define 7 XL COOLER: Be quiet! Dark Rock PRO TR4 NIC: ASUS XG-C100C (10Gbs RJ45) Personal gear: Logitech MX Master 2S and Logitech Craft Keyboard and I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 Black Edition Headphones when I'm editing. Networking and NAS: SWITCHES: 2x Mikrotik CRS326-24S+2Q+RM Wi-Fi Router: Linksys wrt1900ac - we just moved it from our old office (before my time ) NAS: Synology RS3618xs Drives: 12 x Seagate Exos x16 16TB in RAID 6 (I know I'm takinga bit of a risk here with such a large RAID 6, but we didn't want to loose too much space) NIC: Mellanox Connectx-2 dual 10Gbs with SFP+ connectors - maybe I made a mistake here, because what I learned is, that the unsupported NIC makes the fans on the NAS run at a higher RPM "for safety" UPS: PowerWalker VFI 3000 CRM LCD The old Synology that you can see on the picture is a DS1812+ that I took offline just this week. It is filled with 8 x 3TB WD RED drives and might in the future serve as an off-site backup. (We had to get the second switch, because the NAS turned out to be too loud to have it in a closet in the office. - even though I planned the whole NAS and infrastrature in our new offices I had no input on where to put it and had to work with whatever was there. In the end we decided to relocate the NAS into our storage area in the basement - we will link the switches together with a 40Gbs fiber connection.) SO HERE IT IS: MY OFFICE WORKSTATION: I was very interasted in how would a super-ultrawide monitor fit into my workflow and I must say it is fantastic, but I am planning to put a second 27" 4k monitor above it so I can have a full-screen image of whatever I am editing on it. Do you know any good wall mounted monitor arms? It needs to to carry a Dell U2718Q, but if you know a monitor stand that can carry this massive 49" and 27" above it that would be a good solution too - even better . I have hidden the rest of the images in spoiler tabs, so that they don't open all at once
  8. Hi! I recently finished my dual-3090 Threadripper 3970x custom watercooled system. It will be mainly a workstation for simulations (mostly bioinformatics), video editing and 3D rendering. I have 3 360mm EKWB blocks for cooling. An SE, PE and an XE. My issue is, that I am worried about the temps of my CPU and coolant. I am a newbie for hardware and computers in general, but I am keen to learn. Is there a way to change the settings of the CPU to make it run cooler, consume less power but retain the performance it has? I read somewhere that undervolting is different and may not be the best solution on a Threadripper CPU. If anyone with more knowledge, or experience with the 3970x could help me, and possibly provide a step-by-step guide to change the settings to achieve lower temps it would be very much apriciated. Any background reading is welcome on this topic! Thank you very much in advance!
  9. Hi! I finished my build, and I might have shot myself in the leg. Note, that I am not an expert on the topic by any means, I just wanted to build a system which is futureproof, reliable workstation for modeling and bioinformatics, as well as a good gamestation. Here is my setup: -ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha -AMD Threadripper 3970x -2xMSI RTX 3090 Suprim X -G.Skill 256GB (8x32GB) kit 3600 Now, I just realised that the Threadripper 3970x officially maxes out at 3200Mhz memory speed, and only the 3990x supports 3600Mhz. Since I purchased the 3600Mhz kit, I am affraid I might have lost performance, since the CL numbers are as follows: 3200 kit: CL16-18-18-38 3600 kit: CL18-22-22-42 After doing the math, I realized that even after I set the RAM to 3200Mhz, I'll have longer latency due to the larger CL numbers, compared to if I have gone with the 3200Mhz kit. My question is: is there any way to maximize my performance, decreasing latency? Either by setting the CL numbers lower, or running the RAM at 3600Mhz? Is it possible to tune these sticks to get the same performance or better, as if I have gone with the 3200 kit? Anything like the infinity fabric or using the DRAM calculator? Thank you very much in advance!

  11. Hi guys, looking for a good cooler for the Ryzen 3960X/3970X. I like the look of the Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM but worry that it won't quite cool the CPU enough - is that the case, or will it work fine? I won't be doing any overclocking and don't run any long CPU intensive tasks like rendering. If that's not a good match, could someone recommend something? I'd prefer a white cooler but I know that's not always possible.
  12. hey peeps, i was browsing ebay recently and saw 3970x and 4960x CPUs around the same price. I currently have a 3930k and was wondering if I shoud bother upgrading at all. I kindda wanted the PCI-E 3.0 support. Don't want a 4930k as it is almost the same price as the 4960x without the X rating Please provide your 2 cents 3930k vs 3960x vs 3970x vs 4960x
  13. Hello, I recently encountered a streamer who runs this setup: 3970x, 16gb ram and gtx 760. He was complaining about low fps in Starcraft 2 on low settings while streaming. Could the 3970x be a bottleneck in this situation or is there any chance that it's the graphics card?
  14. So I've been rocking on my i7 3820 from the summer of 2012 (my god, has it been 4.5 years?). I chose the X79 platform for my first build, because I thought it would bring the best performance (quad channel memory and all the pcie lines ). Well it's certainly been very solid, but if I knew what I know now, I would probably have just gone with a mainstream system and saved some bucks. Back then the new Sandy Bridge Extreme edition 6 core chips were pretty expensive, so I settled for the 3820. I have done few "suicide runs" at 4.9 GHz, but for the 24/7 use the 3820 has been running cool and happy at 4,3 GHz (~1.29 V). It's still a very good chip, as there haven't really been any significant ipc gains since Sandy Bridge... So I thought heck, instead of building a totally new expensive system for some unimportant performance gains, I'll just update my partially locked (could be oc'ed past 4.3 GHz, but it was still kinda a pain in the ass) 4 core to an unlocked 6 core. Not really an upgrade that would bring everyday desktop performance to the next level (I think such doesn't exist atm...), but something nice for a couple of heavier workloads (okay, it's just for fun ). These days even the highest end SB-E parts can be found second hand for relatively cheap (at least when you compare to what they were going for even few years ago). I thought I'd check what I could find on ebay, and in the end I ended up winning some random auction on an i7 3970X of all things This cpu was stupidly expensive in 2012, but now It's possible to obtain it for a fraction of the original price. I would have been good with either 3930K or 3960X, but the 3970X is what I ended up with (the bragging rights... a little too late though ). Btw, if you are curious what the H100 AIO cooler pre applied tim looks after 4.5 years, here: Well I guess it looks just normal, and it's been good for all this time. Also, I've been wondering how long the H100 will still keep going until either the liquid has evaporated too much or the pump breaks... Anyway, while I was cleaning the parts with an old "credit card", I noticed the i7 3970X I got had a tiny bump around the edge of the hole in the heat spreader. I carefully chambered it away (lol), but I was surprised it was there. As a side note, looks like acetone can clean the markings off of the socket's cpu retention plate, along with any grease on the cpu So got the new cpu installed, booted successfully in the bios, i7 3970X recognized in the bios, yay! Tried to boot a couple of times in the windows: bsod "machine check exception" After heavily underclocking I made it into windows. I decided to reseat the cpu just in case. In the process I noticed I should have put a little more tim than just a "rice", so I put a healthy X. Eventually I got the cpu running fine, after tinkering with the settings in the bios. In the end it seemed to boil down to the fact that this 3970X just plain old required more vcore to run than what I was expecting. After adding some more juice it runs and overclocks quite nicely. The problem is that my H100 with push/pull can't keep up with this thing running at 4,8 GHz on 6 cores. First of all, the cores will hit 91 C in high stress test (throttling). And second, there is secondary kind of heavier throttling even if the cores are under 91 C, but high load is sustained for longer periods of time. After changing all power/current settings to max in bios, I thought it might be due to the motherboard VRMs overheating. So, I changed the rear fan from exhaust to intake and ghetto mounted it in an angle to blow on to the socket area: It might have improved things a bit, but the throttling still persisted. I noticed it starts to happen soon when the "cpu" temp gets around 67 C, so I guess it's the cpu throttling after all when it hits the Tcase limit of 66.8 C. So for now I'll settle for 4.6 GHz (+0.05 V offset mode gives ~1.37 V max, seems pretty stable so far). I guess I might ditch the H100 and add the cpu in the custom loop and also get an additional radiator. It would also improve the noise levels somewhat, but if I do that I guess it would be time to upgrade the case to something nicer as well, unless I do some (more) ridiculous mods You might think this is kind of pointless (which it kind of is), but I thought it might be interesting to actually try a cpu (only) upgrade which brings 1.5x performance increase (+ some from higher oc) in multi threaded scenarios. So far I'm happy with the results and I think it's still probably going to be good for years to come (I'm going to test out how long can I keep on going with this system, until I feel like I really need more performance)
  15. Hi all, I am wanting to try out PBO and AutoOC on my 3970x using the Aorus Master TRX40 to see how much faster it is, but if I don't see any noticeable improvements I will disable it. Will enabling it for 5 minutes void my warranty forever, or is it only void if I damage my processor WHILE having PBO enabled? I would hate to use it for 5 minutes and disable it, only to find out my warranty is gone even though I don't use it at all afterwards!
  16. Hey everyone, I will be doing an upgrade and I want to get a few questions out and asked before I proceed with it. My idea is to get 2 x RTX 2080 Super cards for my PC upgrade. The reason is that I want to increase the amount of monitors I can use and at the same time when I want to relax and play to have otpimal performance. Firstly I am currently using 4 monitors. Monitor 1 - LG 35 inch 144 hz 3440x1440 Monitor 2 - LG 27 inch 240 hz 1920x1080 Monitor 3 - LG 27 inch 240 hz 1920x1080 Monitor 4 - Acer Predator 27 inch 240 hz 1920x1080 My question is if I get a second GPU will I be able to increase the amount of monitors I have? I need to add two more monitors to the setup. Some of you might say it is enough with four and it is dumb or useless but my workflow will definitely benefit the extra monitors especially if one of them is a second ultrawide monitor. Secondly from what I read performance wise for when I game I will not see any benefit if I have two RTX super cards? I do not plan to game on all monitors at the same time I will game on one of the ultrawides. Here is the planned setup for the rest of the PC if you need it for reference: Ryzen Threadripper 3970X Asus Zenith II Extreme Trident Z Neo (for AMD Ryzen) Series 64GB Corsair AX1500i power supply I am still debating on what cooler to get for the system. I will be using my C700P case for the whole build in which I currently have a system with 1950X in it. Awaiting the feedback and help and sorry for the long post!
  17. exactly as the title says, were there any TR units that were actually available to buy? all i've seen were pre orders. i was on newegg the moment they launched and all i saw was a pre order button. i have pre-orders in 3 different places. i have looked on message boards and discords far and wide, and have yet to find a single person who got a unit or who's unit were shipped. microcenters didn't get any threadrippers, B&H did not either. i don't know about amazon or newegg. any ideas?
  18. Hi all, I am really struggling to find an EATX case for my upcoming 3970x build which will include the Aorus Master and a 160mm high Wraith Ripper. Every single case I look at seems to have no airflow with either glass or a flat plastic front with no grill, RGB and glass windows adding to the cost. I would just love a plain case with enough room, good airflow for intake, and no extras adding to the cost like RGB and glass side panels. I have looked up many cases and the Antec P101 has no frills but unfortunately I have heard the airflow is quite poor. My current case is the BeQuiet SIlent Base 800, which I have measured would probably fit an EATX motherboard in but it would be extremely tight at the bottom near the power supply and it would overhang all the cable management holes. Are there any cases that fit my criteria of a simple box with no frills and good airflow that don't break the bank? Thanks in advance
  19. Hi all, I will be building a new PC after Christmas with the 3970x, 8x8GB 3000 DDR4 and an Aorus Master. I have seen online in many places that air coolers like the Cooler Master Wraith Ripper (and I'm guessing the Arctic Freezer 50 TR) are completely inadequate in cooling the 3970x and that I need to get at least a 240 rad. Is this true? I would prefer to pay less than £150 for the cooler but if I need to spend more I will do. I just have no idea which sTRX40 water cooler to get!!
  20. Hi all! I am new to the forums and come here looking for help. I have very limited experience with building systems, but just got done building a.3970x rig on Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme. There are two AMD RX580 installed also. I have very modest cooling. The three fans which came with the Fractal Design XL R2 configured as two front intake, one rear exhaust. The PSU is configured at the bottom upside down to exhaust through the bottom of the case. Those case fans are all three pin, so connected directly to a molex and not the mb. The CPU has a noctua (I think the only model available for Threadripper 3), heatsink and fan. Hi (Edit: NH-U14S TR4-SP3) I am seeing idle temps at 65C-68C, and raising quickly to 85C, and slowly up from there under load. I am told the amd website lists safe temps up to 95, but this all just feels a little too toasty to me, and I do plan to stress this CPU. So my questions: 1) What actually are reasonable CPU temps? 2) Is this to be expected with such modest cooling? I.E. could I have done something wrong during installation of the cooler, or have I heavily under-estimated the cooling requirements? 3) Are better quality case fans likely to make a significant difference, or should I be looking at water? (I don't care about noise, but wanted to avoid the maintenance of water cooling, which is all new to me) Help me L.T.T forums, please!
  21. Hi all, Newbie to the forum here (although I've been a reader/lurker for years). I would like to ask some help with a build I'm putting together for work (freelance). I have a sufficient PSU laying around somewhere and an old titan black (a gpu is not really important for my work). The system will be used for work 9hours a day 5 days a week, however also be rendering or simulating on full load for 3-12 hours a day 5 days a week. I expect to be playing some casual games on the weekends. Here's what I put together thus far. The 3970x is a no-brainer and 64gb ram is the minimum if not 128gb. I'm still insecure about the cooling solution (air won't be sufficient due to the long periods or render and simulation time, custom looping is kinda iffy, so it would be awesome if an AiO works). Any other recommendations such as a case (I have no clue what case to pick, other than that it needs to fit a big radiator) is super welcome! CPU: AMD Threadripper 3970X 3.7 GHz 32-Core Processor CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X72 Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix TRX40-E Gaming ATX sTRX4 Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 64 GB (4 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX Titan Black 6 GB Video Card Note: I'm in EU so local prices are different from the big webstores
  22. Hi everybody, my first post here, so I hope this finds you well. I'm currently building a new workstation for 3D (A. Maya, Houdini), Edit (Davinci Resolve), Comp (Nuke) work. I already bought the new Ryzen Thredripper 3970x and now looking into all other components. I'm looking for tipps and improvements. My biggest current questions are RAM, Thunderbold 3 and custom CPU Watercooling. I first start with what I collected so far. CPU: AMD Thredripper 3970X CPU Cooler: ? (Cusom Watercooling or AiO?) Motherboard: Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS Extreme or Asos Zenith II Extreme (depending on your recommendations) Memory: 128GB DDR4 RAM (I'm not sure if I should choose "4x32GB" or "8x16GB" more to that below) Storage M.2: 2x Samsung 870 EVO Plus 2TB M.2 Storage HDD: 3x Seagate IronWolf Pro 10TB (already in use) Storage SSD: 4x Samsung 860 Pro 4TB (already in use as RAID but don't necessarily need to be in the build) GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080Ti 11GB AORUS XTREME Waterforce (I want to insert a second 2080Ti later on) Power Supply: ? (I think I need around 1300 W so I'm currently looking into the "SeaSonic Prime Modular 1300W Platinum") PCIe-Card 01: Blackmagic Mini Monitor (already in use) PCIe-Card 02: Intel SPF+ 10Gbe Network Card (already in use) OS: Win10Pro Case: Nanoxia Deep Silence 6 (already in use) What RAM would you recommend for a Ryzen Threadripper 3970X with a Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Xtreme? I'm looking for 128GB of RAM. Just to have it more future proof and upgradeable in the future I think I would prefer 4 Slots á 32GB than 8 Slots á 16GB. Is it an advantage to use 4 Slots because the processor doesn't have to work as hard or do you think 8 is the better choice even if it's not that future proof? Also most of the new G.Skill Ram is still not available so there are not a lot of 32GB RAM Sticks out there. For sure I would love to use the highest Mhz frequency the Systems allows (3200Mhz?). I heard there are limitations depending on how much slots you use bud didn't find informations about it online). Working in film and commercial always means MacBookPros on set and a lot of TB3 devices around. What are my best options to implement Thunderbold 3 with my Threadripper 3970X? (I usually wanted to buy the Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS XTREME or the ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme) I haven't started looking into custom Watercooling for this CPU yet. I don't want to spend more than 650 for cooling. Thank you for all your help. All tipps and tricks are welcome as I'm only on a basic knowledge level! So thankful for everything.
  23. Hi All, Pawel from SiCr speaking here (www.siliconcr.com). I'm mentioning this to be treated seriously and because I'm new to the forum. I'm not another internet troll posting about some ridiculous build that will never happen. We are about to upgrade couple of our workhorses in company, so I will be happy to discuss proposed build: Info: -our software utilizes very, very expensive licenses that are limited to some certain number of threads and their cost is humongous compared to hardware cost so basically there is no cost limit for hardware, and we can even afford bricking CPU/GPU monthly. Let's put some example, not far from reality number: 50k USD/year/16thread license ? -some of the software can utilize GPU cores for computing acceleration but scaling is weak so preferable is less, more overclocked cards, therefore sweet spot for us will be dual watercooled and overclocked 2080ti's. These will be faster than Titan's RTX, and just a bit slower than V100s but for a 10x lower price... cards unfortunately have to be overclocked by vendor cause this will operate under linux where there is no nice way of OC other than flashing card BIOS -server grade components are out of discussion, as I mentioned before harware cost ~nothing in compare to software so I prefer 16cores@5GHz than gazillion cores@3GHz like in server grade CPU's -memory: it does not need to be ECC, it has to be fast and at least 256GB so looks like we are limited to 32GB dimms and TRX40 platform -this has to work with 24/7 loads, and we successfully did that with other top tier 'consumer grade' components so no worry ? -does not need to be quiet or pretty -we will build initially one or two of those machine with maybe doubling them in next quarter Config so far then: motherboard: Asus Zenith II Extreme or Aorus TRX40 Extreme, based on internet Asus has better colling solution for VRM and lower VRM temps, Aorus has higher current output and more stable VRM and CPU heats up less but VRM temps are much higher. On the other hand World Record has been made with MSI board.... cpu: AMD 3970x to be overclocked > 4.8GHz all cores so we are talking about ~600W and it will be pushed to the limits memory: 4 kits of Corsair Vengeance 2x32GB 3600MHz CL18 or ??? looks there is no other kits for now to my knowledge that can reach 3600MHz with 256GB case: ??? gpu: 2 x Aorus 2080ti Waterforce or .... Kingpin 2080ti?? cooling: custom WC with... 480mm/60mm(1200W heat dissipation) or more?.... maybe some 1kW aquarium water chiller can be added into the loop. Waterblock is ofc EK-Velocity sTR4 or maybe there is something other existing? supply: 2 x Seasonic Prime Ultra 1200W? we have 1200W to dissipate/lets say 0.9 efficiency then supplies peak efficiency is in 40-60% load range so 1200W/0.9/0.6=~2220W needed for 24/7 operation hdd/ssd: don't care mostly Cheers -Pawel
  24. Hello Everyone, So I very recently build a Thredripper 3970X workstation and, I am observing very high idle temperatures, usually bouncing back and forth between 56 to 62 degrees C. Under a 60 second Cinebench R20 run, the max temperature reached 88-89 degrees C. These seem to be very high numbers but the idle temps is what concerns me. I am using a Noctua U14S TR4 cooler in single fan mode. Motherboard - MSI Creator TRX40. I am not sure but it seems like I might have got a bad chip or am just over analyzing... Any thoughts ? Regards, Hardik
  25. Hi everyone I am currently on an i7-4770 based build and I have been steadily pushing my system to the max these days especially given the age. I have an i7-2600 based old machine still around, and the last one year I have been using this one also as a secondary build machine to give me some headroom but my workflows have become complex for my needs managing two machines. Hence considering a new build and I am looking at Ryzen 3rd gen Threadripper, specifically one of 3960X vs 3970X. I am planning to purchase the parts over the next 3-4 months slowly based on deals that show up. I am going to be using air cooling (NH-U14S TR4 SP3) for my build. I am primarily looking to make an informed decision between 3960X vs 3970X for my use case (described below). 3970X has more cores/threads but a slightly lower base clock. I am trying to better understand if 3960X allows me to push the CPU much closer to its max as opposed to 3970X, before I get capped by the CPU/cooling TDP limits? Or is it the other way around. where 3970X is more efficient in allowing more parallelization for the same CPU/cooling TDP limits, thoughts? Basically, I don't want to get a 3970X if I am going to get the same CPU performance as I would have with the 3960X because of the Thermal limits, and this is where I would like inputs primarily. I also understand cooling is going to make a whole lot of difference. I researched cooling options, and I prefer sticking with air cooling approach that I am more comfortable with. AIOs would be acceptable, but I have found none that has a large enough baseplate that provides 3rd gen Threadripper coverage and have proven to be be reliable. Just to give an overview of my current workloads and future extensions: - My workstation is turned on and running 24x7, and running primarily Debian Linux. - It is my primary machine for code development and has development/continuous-integration builds running a good portion of the time (4-6 hours a day minimum). A lot of these are clean builds, and hence the time to finish turns out to be CPU and parallelism dependent. - A few different docker containers running for development, testing, CI, etc. and a few Virtual machines as well for deployment. A few times a month, I also use Windows on VM to run few programs that I can run only on Windows. - A decent amount of IO, but I am already using a NVMe SSD which I will be carrying over to this new build. The numbers I have pulled so far seems to indicate that I am not bottlenecked on the IO with the SSD. - I also use 4 hard drives in mdadm RAID-6 for cold storage. Again not bottlenecked on IO here as well so far since most of the heavily used data remains on the SSD, with only backup/long-term storage moving to this cold storage and also less frequently compared to the reads from the SSD. However I plan to be vastly (4 - 8x) scaling/expanding my development scenarios, and based on the calculations I did, I am most likely to start hitting bottlenecks here. This is where I am thinking that the TRX40 platform and available PCIe lanes might help. I might throw in one or two 4xM.2 PCIe adapter cards to add more NVMe storage. If that is overkill, I might take the route of adding few SATA SSDs to keep the costs down and extend my runway instead. - No gaming per-se on this machine, however I do need three 4k outputs. I already have a Radeon Pro WX 2100 GPU (comparable to an RX550) that is very much up to this task today and is quite energy efficient (Max TDP of 35W). - I also run Plex on the same server that streams/transcodes 4k content a few hours each day within my local home network while running the above workloads. - I am also planning to throw in additional new workloads like 4k/8k video editing (while my PC is handling few CI runs) for some of my hobby projects, but not currently. This is also one of the other reasons I am looking at high core count CPUs. - I also tend to keep these machines for 7-10 years, before going for the next upgrade. Thanks for the help.
