  1. Finnished this blog now?: Not quite, I am yet to do the Grid2 Benchmark but I can talk about the general use of the cards. Before modding, the reference card was extremely loud, as you can imagine, whereas the Tri-X cooler stayed almost silent. After this mod, I found that while the total noise for both cards has been reduced, the single 120mm fan is having to work harder that the three 80mms on the Tri-X. So it's louder post mod unfortunately. On the bright side though, the card runs at the same temperature but goes back to idle temps much faster. As for the reference, almost a 40 degree difference in max temperature. VRM: The bane of my life while working on these cards, VRM temps are still higher that I would like. At this point though, I can't amend this short of buying bigger and less stylish coolers. Which might seem like a good trade off to some of you but for me, getting this build to look right is more important that perfect temps. 65 degree average VRM in intensive games is good enough for me. Whats Next?: Well since the change from PC In A Drawer to PC On The Wall, I have made progress with the designs. These cards should be installed into the custom case next week, since its half term I can get a day off to do it in. However, I am working on another Attempts blog now. This one will feature a some packaging and an ITX Motherboard. I will not be uploading onto this blog until the cards are fitted into the final case, or until something breaks. Thank You :)
  2. Grid 2 Benchmark, Max Settings, 2560x1080: Maximum VRM temp was 64 degrees, well within acceptable limits considering the up to 105 degree guarantee. However, Tri-x Sapphire cooler VRM temps will not get beyond 50 degrees with the same settings. This is due, most likely, to the difference in heatsink size between the two cards rather than the airflow. After I ran the bench on loop for 50 minuets, the VRMs dropped down to 40 in a matter of seconds and only took five minuets to get back to the idle (34). Of course, these are the VRM1 temps on the card, which are the main VRMs. j VRM2 readings showed a max of 61 and an idle of 51 with just heatsink and no airflow at all. This is also acceptable and I plan to get some airflow over these sinks too in the final project. There are no benchmark images due to the 2mb size limit and the fact that I have no compression software at this time. Fresh install and what not. So is all I can provide at the time. FPS was an average of 56 and max of 79 (rounded) this is all at stock clock. I will be overclocking the cards once I have compared this first 290x with the second after it's modded. Thank You :) p.s. Planning to change mounting for the second 290x. Using Paste for the VRMs rather that the provided pads. I will also spread the processor paste myself to ensure it has good spread.
  3. Finally Some Results!: Geil VRM sinks came this morning, only two days late... Anyway, these sinks are pretty small and with a fan ghetted on the card pretty poorly, they still hit 103 degrees with furmark. However, in regular gaming, I am seeing 95s on average which is on par to the reference cooler that was on here. This post isn't about the core temps but I'm really happy with them. So this higher VRM temp is worth the sacrifice. Can I Make It Better?: I can certanly get rid of the thermal pads that came with the VRM sinks, replaceing it with a nice dolop of MX-4. Which could help with the temeratures. Moreover, placing a fan closer to the sinks will be much better. The original schems for the drawer build had me using the flow directly from the rads to cool the MOSFET, VRAM, RAM and VRMs but I think I am looking at adding more smaller fans into the mix. I suppose the two 200mm NZXTs I have hanging arround would suffice but they would wreck my airflow. Since this is by no means the finnished design I will not be posting in depth test results. Photos!: Whats Next?: Tomorrow moring I will be uploading some core temp readings and tomorrow evening there will be proper bench results. Using furmark and Vally most likely. In addition, I have H60 CPU temps to post on the drawer blog. As well as some mounting test images and other odds and sods. I'd apologise for the lack of content over the past few days but it's not like I've been slacking off. My main systems motherboard died, GA-990FX-UD5. Flat out broke, PC shut down mid youtube video and would not post. So I'm suing an MATX GA-78LMT-USB3 I theived out of my sisters build. Some good news though? I am going to be splurging and grabbing an Asus Formula V. So look forward to that blog. Thank You :)
  4. Whats Next?: All updates that I planned for today have been haulted due to time constraints. I have to get this build finnished before 6 this evening which is going to be tough. I simply don't feel like working on blogs today. Hoever, lots of stuff arrived today so i can start updating the Drawer Blog and The Red Mod Blog. Stay tuned. Thank You :) p.s. Here's some images of the build so far...
  5. Cooling 'n' stuffs: Just cooling the processor isn't enough, VRM and to a lesser extent, VRAM need some attention too. These heat sinks were pretty cheap and came with a terrible thermal pad that wouldn't stick at all. So I took these off and used the smallest amount of MX2 paste as possible. I also had to spread the paste by hand because the heat sinks are under any kind of retention. Didn't take long after I got the hang of spreading the paste. I have some photos but I've been having phone camera issues so this is all I got. The rest were ether corrupted or severely blurred. Whats Next? Very long day today, more posts coming tomorrow on a gaming build. These will be on the main blog channel Smokey's Chronicles. Other than this I plan to dribble bits on the Drawer blog until Wednesday where I will have major updates. Benchmarks for this 290x will be up Wednesday, delivery's permitting.
  6. What?: I've attached a Corsair H60 AIO to a 290x reference from MSI. Insane... Yes... Dangerous?... Yes... Cool?... You tell me people. To see more on this, go to my other blog Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod. Whats Next?: Regular update to each blog, and some cool stuff on this blog by tonight hopefully. I should be able to make a start on another build late this evening and I will by uploading entries with images today and tomorrow. Thank You :)
  7. Oh My Jesus...: First step in modding the 290x is to actually mount the CPU AIO to the card. I have no VRM or VRAM cooling yet, so expect no overclocking or even bench marking beyond idle temps today. Check out my other blog, Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod, for more detail. Here are some images of the card to wet your appetite. Whats Next?: For this blog, not allot I'm afraid. I have some RAM coolers coming Friday and until then I will be posting schematics for the internals of the case. Please, any ideas on mounting positions and solutions would be great. I'm happy that at this time 75 people have looked at this blog, I'm sure many just popped in and out but if you are following this then thank you, make sure to check out my other blogs, Smokey's Chronicles and Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod. Any thoughts on this mod? Thank You :)
  8. Progress! My thermal paste arrived this morning so I can re-mount the H60. I have done two things differently this time around, one was to fit the cable ties like this... and the other was to add more paste. Moreover, I checked the coverage of the paste and if covers the die which is great. I did this by pressing the cooler by hand before tightening the cable ties. Now, I didn't press down super hard, in fact there were still some blogs of paste that needed to be pushed down a little more. I'm currently running the pump and fan on molex adapters to get an idea for noise. Very loud I have to say, some Noctuas wouldn't go a miss but they are a little over budget. Mind you, it is my birthday soon... perhaps I will add them to the list along with a fan controller. Anyway, everything seems to be running okay, I plan to re-attach the PCIe bracket and make sure that idle temps are insane. I will post another entry once I get some results. No stress testing today, I haven't got anything on the VRMs or the VRAM. Haven't cut the last of the ties down yet, just in case I need to ratchet them down more but I don't expect to. I can pick the card up by the H60 and it doesn't come away. Probably not good for it but nether the less, a good test to check the levelness of the mount. It was really hard to tighten the ties at the same rate. I had a huge issue with this in my previous attempts. However, the new cable tie arrangement has worked out brilliant. Here are some images of the card so far. I ill update this blog with regular info on my cards. Whats Next?: Monday next week is the due date for my VRM and VRAM sinks to arrive, once they are here I will get a couple of entrys out on this blog for the fitting and then testing. I will also add a summative entry on the main blog and on the Drawer build blog. Other than that, I may have so stuff on another build up for tonight or tomorrow depending on work scheduling. Anyway, this went pretty well, it was tense but I'm glad I didn't chicken out. Stay tuned fore more cool modding and overclocking. Thank You :)
  9. How Much Longer?: eBay claims my VRM and VRAM coolers will arrive next this friday. I know this is an estimate so I might be looking at a delivery next week which will mean no big updates this weekend. Possibly next week I will get the time to mod the test card but I am working on a couple of other builds which are taking up some time. I may do a short blog entry on them on my main blog: Smokey's Chronicles :. Keep up to date with my personal build at my other blog: Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer :. Whats Next?: Well I'm limited by dilivary dates and spare time arround my college work, job and the builds I am working on but I will try and get little updates like this out every day for each of my blogs. Thank You :)
  10. Where Am I Getting It From?: I'm sure there are many more places over seas where you an get modding supplies but in the UK we are limited to websites like Kustompcs.co.uk and Overclockers.co.uk. These sites offer great ready built mods and a wide selection of coolers, heat sinks and fans but lack things like velcro reels, screws, nuts and wood glue. So I'm getting all of the stuff for this build, barring the MDF, from eBay. I have finished the list of items I need and added some that I want, like the NZXT Sentry. Here is a link to my eBay collection: http://www.ebay.co.uk/cln/luk_bris/Smokey-Attempts-PC-In-A-Drawer/165712357013:. Whats Next? Planing to do more of these little updates leading up to this weekend when I will post the results of the red mod. Follow my other blog, Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod, for more updates on the GPU modding. Thank you :)
  11. What Did I Do?: To prep the 290x for VRAM, VRM and Processor cooling, I stripped it down. This is an MSI reference PCB card. It came with a stock cooler but unfortunately I cannot show you the removal of the cooler as it's already done but OC3D have a Corsair HG10 review where you can see it step by step. So, moving on, Here are some images of the nude card. Note I have also removed the PCIe cover because this card is being used in my current custom case. You can see the progress of this build in my other blog "Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer". I am also storing this card in it's original anti-static packaging, so don't worry to much about that one. Thank You :)
  12. What Is The Red Mod?: The Corsair HG10 and NZXT's Kraken G10 are two examples of Mounting solutions for GPUs that don't require you to cable tie it together. Another important thing to note is that these solutions have built in VRM and VRAM cooling. Whereas the red mod is much more "bodged". It basically lets you fix an AIO to a GPU with cable ties as tension screws. Geil make VRM coolers for the 290 and 290x but I can't say for other cards as I've not looked into it. VRAM coolers are so easy to find it's not worth listing them. Why Even Bother?: Because I can really, I would like to think it's to; reduce noise, reduce temperature, allow for aggressive overclocking or to look bad ass but really... I just want to try it. Which is why I am open about my lack of experience. I'd like anyone with some experience to add input. Whats Next?: I am working on a sister blog to this one, "Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer" in case you are interested, so updates may not be daily. Though I will pop in and look at comments each day I can. Next, I will be going through some, pre-VRM cooling, mounting tests that failed and succeeded. Thank You :)
  13. So basically I've been scouting the internets for the fix to my black screen problem but nothing works for me. I tried underclocking and undervolting. NOPE. Flashed a new bios. NOPE. Flashed a bios from another "compatible card". BRICKED CARD. Flashed 290x bios. NOPE.... So to the problem: When I play games like Overwatch, GTA V, Warface I get a black screen and the computer freezes. Sometimes it happens after 30 minutes and sometimes 3 hours. I never get a black screen when the card is idle. Any Ideas? Thanks!!! P.S.: The PSU is strong enough!
  14. Is 80 degrees normal? Especially during Overwatch? I would have imagined it would run a bit cooler. Frames are capped at 70 as well. I'm running the Sapphire Vapor-X if that matters to anyone.
  15. Hey everyone, I think it's time to sell the old watercooled 290 and I need your help. I currently have a 6500 and 16gb 2133 ram, along with a aio watercooled 290. As of late, I have been heavily into player unknowns battleground, just like everyone else, and it runs alright, until I'm near explosions or am in a pretty heated firefight then I will get massive frame drop. I have been sort of out of the loop for awhile about new GPUs, but I have been looking into the new 580s. Now I know they'r basically a 480 refresh, but I was wondering if that would be a good upgrade? I did look at some benchmarkets of the 480 vs the 290 and it seems like they'r about the same fps wise.
  16. So my pc is bottlenecking pretty hard. I recently upgraded to an Intel 6500 and I still have my r9 290 ?. It is watercooled via G10 and a corsair 120m aio. I was wondering everyone's opinions on a price I could sell the whole GPU set up for? I wouldn't be putting the stock cooler back on, but I will be including it.
  17. I started to get these black screen crashes with sound looping after getting a new GPU, Msi reference R9 290 (bios ver. xxx 39 xxx) resulting in to forced hard reset. It crashes somewhat randomly, sometimes right after for example, loading a game and it crashes almost instantly (sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes 5 mins) and sometimes I can game for hours upon hours until a crash, it seems random but at least one crash a day. (I don't play much anymore because of this) Things I have tried: -Switching up PSU cables and spots -Placing some fans on the back of card & PSU for extra cooling, and adding up the fan speed on the card itself & on the case fans -Using DDU and using two of the latest drivers -Running stock on CPU -Adding up some voltages on MB bios, system agent voltage & vcore for CPU -Upping powerlimit up to 25% -Vsync (60) on War Thunder, helps a little but still crashes after a while. This isn't much of use since I run 144hz -Running with and without Afterburner installed/running custom fan curve Things I'm planning on trying over the weekend: -Downclock the memory/core -Using the card second PCI-E slot -Try some older drivers (not much expectations for this) -Up the voltage on the GPU itself -Updating a newer bios to the card (xxx 42 xxx) War Thunder, BF4, Witcher 3 are the games I have recently been playing, but other games crash too Other things to note: -Usually after a crash and reset, I can game for a longer period of time without crashes -Does not crash on 3DMark / Furmark / Heaven -Does not crash on regular desktop use -Adding up memory clocks in benchmarks results in artifacts but no crashes, happens with moderately low memory OC (stock 1250 -> 1300) (Also, happens only in 3DMark) -Uses Elpida memory -Hoping to get this fixed soon, next month moving to a custom loop with the GPU included. -Temps are "normal" 94°C and vrm's go up to 85°C (No way of seeing the vram temps tho)
  18. hi everyone, Just wondering if someone would be able to lend me any knowledge on this issue as it's quite frustrating and I really have no idea where to even begin to try and fix it. I'm running an asus amd radeon 290 and I just recently reinstalled windows 10 (this is like a secondary computer) and I noticed that before windows installs the gpu driver the text looks fine. But once the driver is installed, the text immeadiately becomes grainy, out of focus and hard to read. This occurs on any monitor (all hdmi) and at any resolution (typically 1080p, but it even happens on 4k). I've attached two pictures below of the before and after. If I then disable the driver and restart, the text looks fine again. So clearly this has to be something to do with the driver, or amd in general (my other pc is rocking a 1080ti with no issue) Thanks in advance for any help after: before:
  19. Hi All i have A Problem As Were I can Overclock my R9 290 Tri-X Any Amount With Out It Dropping And Staying At 300MHZ I have Disabled ULPS The Pic I have Put Up I Only Run them For Like 10sec In Valley bench Mark Factory I Get 40-50FPS On ultra With The OC no Matter What It Is I get 10-30FPS My Specs -X4 640 -6GB Ram -750watt PSU -AMD R9 290 Tri-X
  20. Hi! When I had my 290 and I was overclocking, I was having artifacts when pushing the clock too hard. With the 980ti i have rn, the driver crashes. Thing is I know people with 980tis who get artifacts when oc and people with 290(x) who get driver crashes and no artifacts. What makes a gpu to artifact when ocing and what makes another one crash the driver? (I personally liked the artifact type of gpus more as they are much more easier to spot. Crashing drivers are much harder to properly stabilize clocks) Also if you know an nvidia driver which is more stable than the others when overclocking (preferably one from 2019 if it exists).
  21. Guys, in 2018, which of this GPUs would you buy? I can get the 290 for $187 and the 970 for $225 (I'm from Argentina). Which of this two do you think will last longer in time to play 1080p@60fps?
  22. So recently i posted about my cracked R9 290 (as seen below) and am looking for a new gpu. Preferably from the R9 series (390, 290 and the x variants) anyone want to sell me one? If not, any recommendations for what to buy?
  23. So.... i bought this R9 290 for $160 on ebay which isnt that bad a deal. The card worked great, but I was thermal throttling while gaming so i wanted to replace the thermal paste (i know the card runs hot but it was getting bad) i replace the thermal compound with no issues, but then my pc wont post. I try everything that i know. After multiple hours i give up and reopen the card...... damn.... that is unfortunate... any of you have an r9 290s for sale?
  24. Hello i have a graphics card, i bought from ebay as used but i'm not sure if it's r9 290 or r9 290x. I hope these GPU-Z screenshots help..? http://prntscr.com/cjez7c http://prntscr.com/cjezay
  25. Looking at my R9 290 reference i brought 3 years ago now.. and cant afford to get anything better. what should i do. try and get some better cooling for it? get a RX 480? for the %11 improvement in games? Im stuck unable to figure out what to do, with gtx 1070 being the best atm performance/price people say to get.. but at $530 USD ?? = $699 AUD atm who has $700 for a gpu not including $50 for shipping... ?? im saving my money waiting for prices to go down. but they seem to just stay up there. ive been more of a AMD fan. for GPU for pricing.. but with the only gpu being a 480. makes me have no choice but to look for nvidia GPUs. Let me know what you guys think. i should do. i dont make much money if any atm. and most of my pc is 3+ years old. i7 4790k 16gb ram R9 290 Reference 128gb ssd 2tb hdd thermaltake bronze 750 watt PSU nanoxia deep silent 2 case nzxt x61 cpu cooler AIO asus z97 pro wifi MOBO noise levels . cant here my self think.
