Hello, I want to use my Dell Optiplex 3020 Micro (4GB RAM; i3 4160; Samsung SSD) to idle steam games (Steam idle master) (for card drops). The pc is running Windows 10 home. Is there any better OS for this purpose. And is the pc made for this kind of application. Should i restart it sometimes? Thanks for your help

Hey all, I am going to be building a 24/7 unRAID Server for the following: Critical file storage; Computer Backups; Plex; VMs; Home Assistant; Ubuntu; Debian; Dockers; Nextcloud; File cloud and email server; Grafana; Portainer; Zabbix; A few others. I'm looking to spend less than a thousand USD on just the CPU and motherboard. Just for the record, I do have a Quadro P2200 and am planning to use this. I have heard about the benefits of ECC RAM, but I know nothing about Xeons, and don't know how much to spend for my current needs as well as a little headroom. I have looked at the 3900x, but have heard some things about AMD Ryzen and unRAID being less stable than Intel, which led me to a 9900k with an ASUS WS Z390 Pro, but then I have 4 less cores, but really don't want to grab a 10900k because I can't find a motherboard that I like as much. So, I'm stuck: would I be better off with ECC memory because this would be a critical machine? If so, what CPU, MoBo, and RAM would you recommend? Thanks. EDIT: I forgot to mention, I will need enough PCiE slots for 10 gigabit network card, HBA, and GPU

I have an asus notebook powered by an 8th gen i5-8265U I am trying to do a deepfake using deepface lab....And after watching a lot of tutorials I figured out that the iter should be more than 100000 in order to get a decent deepfake while training the model I ran the training session overnight (8 hours) and I have managed to get an iter of 10000....(GPU based training seems to have a lot of issues...like the training stopping randomly and is slower than the training done by the CPU) The issue is my laptop is running at 95C the whole time....So is it safe to run this laptop continuously at 100% CPU for 5 days straight? I tried my best to keep it cool....but it does not seem to reduce the temps

Okay, so I am fairly new to F@H and I only have 2.5m points. I have an rx 470 that I did a slight overclock on for the purpose of F@H (1230->1275MHz) and an i5 6500. I also recently built my pc to note. I have heard a lot of people saying that it should be ok to leave my computer folding on this overclock 24/7 without any problems (my CPU never goes above 61C, my GPU never goes above 56C). Although, how bad would it really be to leave my computer folding 20-22 hours a day? I can get 315k PPD if I have my system on full 24/7, and I only average 170k daily. How much would this reduce the life of my components? Will it cause wear and tear? And, the overarching question, is it worth it? I know that LTT is slipping in F@H, and I want to help, but I don't know if it is worth the risk.

Looking for a PSU for my server. So, obviously, it's on 24/7 - I do shut it down occasionally but mostly just for maintenance. Been looking at the EVGA Supernova 550 G3 - would this work well? http://www.evga.com/products/Product.aspx?pn=220-G3-0550-Y1

I have recently stopped paying monthly for server hosting as I lost my job and couldn't afford it. My minecraft server went down because of this and I want to bring it back up. I thought maybe I could turn my laptop into a 24/7 running server as its basically unused and I could assign most of the ram to the minecraft server. However I want to know what steps do I need to take to make it 24/7. I've written a script to restart my server if it stops or crashes but I want to limit the amount of time it stops or crashes. How do I keep my forever changing ip the same? I just need advice as to if its even possible Thanks!

Hi everyone I was wondering what happens when multiple users on the same network access a file from the same HDD at the same time. Does it effect performance when users stream data from that particular HDD and damages the HDD in the long run?

Hello lovely LTT-Community, I´m currently figuring out a way to run a variety tasks 24/7 cheap, small and power efficient. The tasks are ranging from: Downloading (via shell, torrent, steam or other things) Running low-performance Windows applications (A Teamspeak Server, maybe running some Idle-Games on it or something else) Streaming Backups and maybe even running a RAID Powershell scripts Using it as a "Gateway" into my network The thing is that I don´t want to use my custom gaming rig. And it probably wouldn´t be a good idea running a water-cooled PC 24/7 without supervision. Neither would it make sense in terms of the power consumption or the health of the components. I would love to use something like the Intel NUC-series or some Mini-PC, but I couldn´t find something that suits my needs fully. And if possible I would love to have the option to just swap out parts. The PC must be 64 bit or at least x86-32 and run with windows 7 or higher since some of the tasks need that. So sadly no Raspberry or something like that for me. ._. Some Info to start with: I´m currently living in Germany so EUR-prices would be nice, but entirely not needed. Since I can easily look through all components and try to find a good offer for them here in Germany. I would also buy used components for that PC. I already looked through some of the threads addressing the same type of idea. Here is a build I found: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2710572/build-cheap-leave.html The components would probably be an overkill for the tasks and I would love some cheaper option. Running by that basic idea, I looked into some other options and compared them though cpuboss. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-G3258-vs-Intel-Pentium-G3220 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-G3258-vs-Intel-Core-i3-4370 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-6700-vs-AMD-Phenom-II-X6-Black-1090T I would love some input from you guys. I haven´t really decided which form-factor I will use or even what case I would use for the PC. Maybe there is a complete product. So I am open for your suggestions. It would be nice if I got some ideas timely, so I can maybe shop some of the items while there is the Black-Friday-Weekend. (Will keep updating this post along the line) With friendly Regards Jan aka. Sonorpearl

Hello I am going to build a new PC. For the CPU I am going for a AMD Threadripper 1950X. For the cooling I am thinking of using a peltier stack and to cool the hot side of the peltier with a phase change (LittleDevil LD Phase Change) I don't really care about power usage at all. The things I would like to know is. Is this even possible? Will a phase change be able to cool a peltier stack (ranging to get around -100/-150) how bad is it for the CPU when having the PC on for 24/7 even with really good isolation.

Hello everyone! I'm currently running 4 24/7 youtube live streams on OVH.com VPN's, they work perfectly for my needs but the streams always "crash" and the streams are continuously interrupted. So I was thinking that instead of renting servers for $100 a month, why not spend some extra money and build a server at home in which I can do the same thing with which are more reliable? Now I'm not at all educated in this regard, I've only built two PC's for myself and never a server so I have no idea what's good for what. What I would like to do is to have OBS installed and running 24/7 with and MP3 on loop and an image/video shown on loop as well doesn't have to be HD quality. I've tried to search for this information but I don't understand it. Can I do this with a NAS? Or do I have to build a server? If I can do it with a NAS then I'd love to if I could get some instructions on what to buy for this purpose. If I have to build a server myself and like a server rack, I'd not mind that either but what do I need for parts? I'd love instructions here as well if possible. Also, could it be possible to run 4 streams from 1 server or would I have to have 4 separate NAS/servers? I wouldn't mind if it was possible to have a server rack with 4 servers in which have one stream each on them, I'd just need to access them and manage OBS. TL;DR Can I run a 24/7 youtube music stream on a NAS or do I need a server and what do I need to build either of them for this purpose? I'm grateful for any help with this as you'd do me a hell of a service!

Hi guys. I have a gaming PC, can I shorten its lifespan if I leave it turned on 24/7? Is there a difference to its longevity if it is turned off vs turned on all the time? I am doing this because I frequently use my pc even at midnight. By the way electric consumption is not a problem here. Kindly help me with your insights guys. Thank you.

For a couple of years I've fantasized about building a Media Server/NAS hybrid and I've been looking around for cheap ways to do it. I've considered using an old laptop and just run a Plex server, since they're super easy an simple but the only laptop I have laying around to spare is a Netbook with 1 GB RAM and a single core Intel Atom CPU. So I'm kinda planning out what I should do for a proper lightweight media server. This is what I have so far: Cooler Master Elite 110 ASRock H81M-ITX Pentium G3258 3 MB Corsair SF Series SF600 (80 PLUS Gold) Crucial Ballistix Sport 2 x 8 GB WD Red WD30EFRX 3 TB Total: 500$ I'm not very experienced when it comes to server builds so I'd like to know if I'm doing anything wrong here. I've kinda followed the FreeNAS recommended specs, and put in a 80 PLUS Gold PSU for 24/7 operation. I build my brothers and father PC's with Crucial Ballistix Sport (8GB in their builds) and I haven't had any problems with them. In fact I've had more problems with my Corsair sticks than any Crucial ones. The Pentium G3258 is running in my dads PC and it performs super well for the price. I'm wondering if there are any other viable alternatives? Could a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B be a cheaper alternative? For OS I might install FreeNAS+miniDLNA, or simply go Ubuntu or even Windows 8.1. I'd like to keep the project at around 500$ - 550$

The question is quite simple. Is it bad or good if you run your pc 24/7.I had some trust issues with my pc after some incidents because of my stupidity.I pushed it a little too far and i had to pull back the OC.Now, as a test and precaution my pc has been running for 3 weeks straight.I will hit one month and give it some rest.Yes, i know it's consumer grade stuff and might have a negative impact, but i need to hear from you guys. Thanks

Hey Guys, Not sure if this is the right sub-directory, and I know this must've been asked dozens of times but i'm thinking of building a game-server that can preferably be up 24/7 with low energy use. I'd be planning on running a Minecraft, CS:GO, DayZ or any other server all the time, with at least 1 running 24/7, depending on the need. The server would be ~5 slot capacity. I'm asking because i'm usually the guy that hosts servers as I have the know-how when I play with my friends and I have requests with having them run more often than when my PC is on. My Internet is consumer grade, home internet which is 65Mbps down and <30Mbps up. I don't want to rent servers as I don't like monthly costs - i'd rather have a one-off payment that can always be re-purposed into a NAS at home (optional) when not used for servers. Not to mention, running a server while playing the same game doesn't help in terms of fps, even though I have a good PC. Any ideas?

Hello, I am in the process of moving all of my Private TF2, Minecraft UnModded and Minecraft Modded servers from a hosting company onto a Server computer that I will be running at home so I will be able to turn those Private servers into Public ones without having to spends a lot of money. I have a budget of just under £600 (excluding peripherals such as Monitors), I have a list of hardware I think will fit the needs of a network that will be growing in the future. WIll it run 7+ Minecraft servers and a TF2 server with ease? Thanks, Cpt. Kalabraxo

first off: i posted this in troubleshooting because i didnt really know where else to put it, please tell me if its in the wrong section. to the topic: i have two computers that run 24/7 which i'm really not sure of how much power they are *actually* pulling from the wall. i have enough knowledge of computers to know that an exact number cant be calculated but has to be measured, but i cant find any device to measure that anywhere near me. both computers mostly run somewhere between idle and 20% load, with following specs: home server: (4-ish year old custom rig) - i3 540 - 4GB generic RAM (2x2) - generic intel motherboard - 80+ bronze 650watt power supply - no dedicated graphics card - DVD burner - 3 hard drives "steambox": (2-ish year old acer TC-603) - i7 4770 (no K) - 10GB generic RAM (2x4 & 1x2) - generic acer motherboard - generic 350watt acer power supply, doesnt mention anything about reliability or wall power usage. - GT640 4GB DDR3 - DVD burner - 1 hard drive a rough estimate would make me more than happy. if you know an online calculator that can calculate power usage, feel free to suggest it.

I have a laptop running as server (Not a minecraft server!!!!) 24/7. But the problem is, it gets very hot. How do I keep it cool? (If you want me to buy a laptop cooler, what do you think of the Cooler Master NotePal U2?)

The parts takes about 450w on a 600w power supply, I live in England (Oxford) I've been looking around but have no idea how to work this out, if anyone can answer this that would be amazing! But yeah, just want to figure this out. Also does running hardware 24/7 damage it in anyway (say if the fans are at about 65-85%) Sorry for the some what nooby question! (if you need any further information just ask!) -Thanks! Edit: Oh yeah, how much 24/7 a month! ty
