I have: Late 2009 iMac 10,1 OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz Socket 775 4GB RAM 500GB HDD Obviously I’d max out the memory to 16GB. Thinking about swapping in an SSD for my boot drive. This takes a Socket 775 CPU. The fastest one in that form factor is a Xeon X3380. Does anyone know if I could swap the Xeon CPU into an iMac, or does Apple lock it down, only allowing the CPUs they initially offered? If it is possible would the performance increase be worth it? Would I run into issues with thermals? Is the overall upgrade worth it? This is my old, casual use computer. Browsing the web (lots of tabs open at once), watching videos, etc. I have an M1 Mac Mini for my creative endeavors.

Hello Community, I have an old MacBook Pro 15', early 2009 or late 2008 to be exact, and i have the problem that my Bluetooth module is either not working or not installed. I have asked multiple times on the official Apple Website, a Chat with a supporter and a 'Forum Question', or however its called. Both times they mentioned that my Mac was in the category 'obsolete', wich means i can't get support for it anymore from Apple. So i thought that you, the Community, had some ideas on wich adapter i should use. I did some research, but i didn't find anything suitable.

Hello, this is my first time on the LTT forums and i was looking around for solutions on trying to push my old machine back up to speed after 7 years. It's been running pretty slow as of this point, and there are also a few very noticeable problems such as: - Power loss to USB cables when more than 3 USB ports are utilised from the rear port (motherboard) - PC slows down on 30 minute intervals, with the machine taking a long time to load on startup and after the interval starts, the pc locks up a few of the windows for around 3-5 minutes, e.g. chrome tabs stop responding, file explorer windows stops responding - These intervals also either freezes up the app or take a long time to load the files (e.g. moving to different region of the game's map and it has to load that part) PC specs are as follows (note: all the components are 7+ years old, and no OCs were done): Intel Core i7 920 MSI X58 Pro-E Kingston HyperX 1333MHz triple channelling kit (3x 2GB) and Kingston value ram (3x 2GB) Corsair 750W PSU XFX nVidia GeForce GTX260 (896MB, 448-bit, 999MHz clock speed) 2x 1.5TB Western Digital Green, 3.0TB Western Digital Green (boot up partition is on one of the 1.5TB WD Green HDD) Coolermaster CM690 Casing I've done the following steps that i thought of that could possibly improve its performance: - Defragmented all the HDDs - Disassembled the whole PC to clean out dust and replace the thermal compound (which includes disassembling the GPU cooler and replacing the thermal compound there) - Bent back a few of the pins on the motherboard (there were 3 small pins which looked out of place) Cleaning out the dust and replacing the thermal compound solved the crashing issue i had, which i'm gonna assume that the issue was caused by overheating. As of now, i don't know which of the components are failing. I've tested the all the drives, and did diagnostic tests on the RAM sticks and they all seem to be working fine. So far what i've concluded is that either the PSU or the motherboard could be failing. I would gladly try any solution (with explanation and reasons, of course) presented on this thread

Hi Everyone! I have a 2009 PC that makes me don't want Ryzen. not because the specs, but because of how it feels to "play" with a PC. 1.Budget and Location Actually i am not focusing on budget, just finding old parts that is great and cheap. I am currently in Indonesia but i don't mind using $ and £. 2. Aim Just for Fun, but thinking if i can use it for YouTube editing and fast rendering also Racing games and FPS games 3. Monitor Having a TV currently, i can sit my PC there for a while. TV Specs: 12ms Response Time 120Hz Refresh Rate 40" Curved FHD I can ask for a monitor, LG 24GM77 If that's really needed to be competitive in PUBG and Racing Games? 4. Peripherals I have 3 mouses and keyboards, not sure where they come from... Maybe when i was in 2009. Logitech G402 is good and there's a deal for only the mouse at $20 ish For the OS, i am thinking if my PC can "revive" my Windows 7 again. 5. Why are you upgrading? Obviously because of fun that i am searching, the old specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo (unknown) Asus P5G41TM-LX (DDR3 Dual Channel) Pixelview GF9400GT Samsung 160GB HDD Included PSU from Simbadda V-Gen 1GB DDR3 And the main upgrade would be: Core 2 Duo---->Core 2 Quad Q9650 $80 ish (used) GF9400GT----> Zotac GTX 970 $202.40 (used) Kingston HyperX Fury HX318C10FBK2/8 $65 (new) RMx 650W PSU What do you think everyone? Tell me if there's something that you want me to change. Thank you!

Here's the FIRST EVER PCIe SSD used for gaming (Circa 2009)
Lindol posted a topic in Storage Devices
This is my IO Drive Duo. I had this in my PC back in 2009. I'm good friends with David Flynn the inventor of NVME, and the CEO back then of Fusion IO who pioneered Flash Storage over PCIE. Yes, it still works. Funny to think this tech is now making its way into next gen. More info about the SSD -
Budget (including currency): el cheapo Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: any games that I can manage to run, will see if it can handle solid works better than my laptop Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Current components on my old Gateway DX4200-09 that I found in the attic, was wondering if I should just throw it away/sell, or if I should make it into a fun side project to see how much power I can push out of it. CPU: 1.8GHz AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core Memory: 4GB 8000MHz DDR2 Motherboard: 400627R Any advice would be greatly appreciated

This is a 2009 Dell inspiron 537s. It has a Pentium CPU, which I could not find for the life of me, a motherboard that I have no clue about, no graphics card, and DDR2 memory. It is about the dustiest thing I have ever seen. When I opened it, I got a pain in the lungs and started coughing uncontrollably. It runs XP, and it can barely boot Firefox. The power supply has a bunch of Chinese lettering on it, so I am worried about the quality and weather my family will die in a fire when it eventually explodes. Bask in the glory of the 2009 537s.

Inspiron 1545 upgrade options? Worth it?
kdawwgg1221 posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hey there! I have recently acquired my step-mom's Dell Inspiron 1545. She hasn't touched the thing in a few years. It has had battery problems for some reason (despite buying a replacement). I would like some suggestions or comments on how to maybe "fix" this issue. Also, This laptop is surprisingly pretty speedy for it's age. It has a 160gb hard drive that has only been used a handful of times when the last one took a crap. The processor is Intel's Pentium T3400 dual core, 32 bit, and honestly does well despite the lack of cores and age. Is a Core2 Quad an option (P socket)? I do plan on slapping an SSD which should speed up Windows 10 dramatically. It has the stock DDR2 Sodimm (800 mHz) 3gb of ram. This RAM is replaceable but honestly I don't think it would be worth grabbing the supposed "4gb max" according to dell. Crucial claims that 8gb is compatible. Anyone know? Personally, I wouldn't mind using this computer for a second screen (maybe), and/or for twitter and youtube while I game on my desktop. I would appreciate any suggestions. -
Hello nerds! I'm here to show off a build that is mostly complete but will be subject to some upgrades in the near future. I called it the resurrection build(yay cliche) because I am using a bunch of parts that I had lying around, some for 4-5 years, and rebuilding them into The 2009 AMD Beast. Our story starts with me lying in bed, for some reason thinking of computer parts(essentially porn for me) and I thought, "Well I have that motherboard. I have that 965be, ddr2 memory(which turned out to be dead), and that computer he has is just sitting there doing nothing." So the next day I asked my dad if I could pull out that pentium 4 and give him something that won't flip out on windows 7 simply browsing the web. Of course he said yes, and so I took a look inside to see what I had to work with. Picture form: -The case is probably an early 2000 model, my dad said he got it from where he used to work. Remember when they used to make everything inside sharp as F#$%? No rubberised coating here! These are after I cleaned it. I really wish I had photos from before, you can see some of that in the videos below but a before and after is always awesome to see. Imagine years of cigarette smoke, dust, hair from cats, etc. because those poor filters were brown. Live and learn I guess. -It was a pleasant surprise to see a recent Corsair GS600, apparently my dad had gone through some bad power supplies and bought a nice one finally. -There was a sound card in there because the on-board audio was "F@%$ing garbage" not very good. -This is an old AGP Ati Radeon 4650 1gb DDR3 video card that I originally got with the computer I bought from Ibuypower many many years ago. Won't ever buy a pre-built again although the NZXT Tempest case is still in use -Here is this old Motherboard and processor, didn't bother to separate them. -Oh yeah and a crappy old HDD and dvd drive that I'm reusing Those 4 pin molex connectors were like fused into the devices, I forgot how hard it is to not pull out your damn graphics card while trying to unwedge those things. Anyways, I took it all out, cleaned it with alcohol while drinking other alcohol, washed the filters and let it all dry overnight. Here is everything I'm putting in as one pic and list: Motherboard: Asus m3a78-cm Processor: AMD Phenom II 965BE Memory: 8gb Hynix DDR2 800mhz Power Supply: REUSING Corsair GS600 Storage Drives: REUSING 250gb WD and DVD Drive Sound Card: Onboard Motherboard Video Card: AMD/ATI XFX 4870 512mb GDDR5 PCI-E Misc: REUSING 2 Fans back in. And after several hours that included: fighting with that garbage AMD stock cooler, cutting myself on the case, trying to find a way to not have a mess of cables with a non-modular PSU, remembering the io shield at the last second, and having to look up the manual for ASUS weird placement of front hookups... its still a damn mess, but its way better than it was before! And I installed that back fan wrong, but its crap anyways and barely spins. First power on resulted in going WTF to discover the RAM was bad, the ram spots on this mobo are picky as hell, its all around weird because it supports ECC, so anyways, got 2 more sticks to fill it to it's max of 8gb. Got through the bios and windows 7 64 bit installed, ran what benchmarks I could (this is like DX10.1 ish hardware so no DX11)! Crazy seeing it produce near playable framerates in Tomb Raider 2013(1920*1080 high, no vsync/AA, 25.6MIN,31.2AVG,35.8MAX) Dirt 3 was a breeze never dipping below 50 on high, CS:GO was around 80-120 average at med-high settings but I didn't play any huge servers. There are some problems however: These two damn things sound like vacuum cleaners when the going gets rough, and here in 2016 it gets rough real quick. Plus that damn 4870 maxes out at 87 degrees C which I know is fine for the card but near 90 has always made me uncomfortable. Soooo I took that heatsink off and replaced the thermal paste with MX-4 and it dropped down to 83-84 C max, although to be clear when I say max tamp I haven't run any full torture tests on the hardware because I don't want to blow it up (today at least). The cpu cooler kept it a cool 59 C max(enough that I don't think this cpu is fully powered on this mobo however with one cpu power connector?!) in a quick cinebench, with score 338 which seems maybe a little low but it works. Again, still sounds like a vacuum cleaner. On to future plans for this build. I want to get a motherboard on the cheap that has some USB3.0 ports and doesn't worry me with just the 1 4-pinned cpu power connector, so probably a cheap 990fx. I need to put a different cpu cooler in there, its seriously unbearable, worse than the graphics card blower fan for sure, very whiney. Looking at a cheap one there to, not trying to spend a bunch on this but I do want it to STFU sometimes. Finally some new fans would help the air flow in this case a ton, and make me worry a lot less about the long term future of this build. He could probably use a cheap 1tb hard drive or small ssd boot drive to replace the cackling joker thats in there now. My dad mainly plays Rome:Total War (actually he founded the mod Roma Surrectum 1 and 2 and is working on "3" or whatever they call it) so the hardware is easily powerful enough to run that, I just want this build to last a decent amount of time. Will update next week because I will probably order those fans and cpu cooler soon, and if i see a cheap 990 board well... which of us can resist taking it all apart just to put it back together again Let me know what you guys think, how is the post formatting, is the content interesting, etc. For those who TL:DR there are 3 videos (which will take you longer to watch than read lol), my awkward first filming and editing experience. They actually get better from one to the other I think!

Greetings. I've recently been considering buying a new laptop for video editing on the go, but as of now, I don't have enough to afford anything decent, and I might as well make do with what I do have until I can afford something better, like the Dell Inspiron 7559. For the last six years, I've been working with a 2009 MacBook Pro. Its specs are as follows- CPU: Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz) RAM: 4GB Hynix DDR3 1067 MHz (can be upgraded to 8) GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9400M (256MB VRAM, has weakened over the years) Storage: Seagate 500GB SSHD (has failed multiple times and takes a few minutes to boot to finder. OS: OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Now, this computer absolutely crawls. It can't edit 1080p video and I usually have to downscale all the way to 960x540 for a smooth edit, render times are obscenely long, and while it used to be able to play Skyrim at 480p at its lowest settings through Bootcamp, it can barely manage 7FPS now, indicating that the GPU isn't doing too well. However, oddly enough, despite the CPU area heating up considerably and reporting very high usage even while web browsing, I don't think I've ever seen it hit 100%, and I know the SSHD is a piece of junk. This got me thinking- the OS upgrade is free, and the 8GB RAM upgrade is cheap enough, and since SSD prices have been dropping lately, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to get a new 240GB SSD for the boot drive and use my current HDD for mass storage. This question is for those of you who have replaced HDDs in their ageing laptop with SSDs- how can such an upgrade do for a piece of junk like mine? And, using tricks like proxy video editing (downsampling to 480/360p low-bitrate to edit) and performing all of the aforementioned upgrades, will I ever be able to use this thing for any video editing? At least for the brief duration where I'll be travelling? Regards, Aereldor.

Good Afternoon, For my current build i am planning using a 3770k and overclocked to probably 4.0 to 4.2 relatively. I have an old Corsair H50 (i believe) and it's form 2009. Can it still cool the 3770k and if you can, what would be a relative frequency i should have it run on if i keep the H50?
